RPG Thread For This Story (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=259460#post259460)

We are told that the Elves pass into the West after the Ring is destroyed - but what if some had stayed? What if there were small lingering groups of Elves throughout Middle-Earth, even long after the Ring was destroyed - even after the King Aragorn was dead? This RP is based around such a speculation...

This is an open RPG. Any players are welcome; however please keep OOC discussions to THIS thread and PM me before joining (just to keep it clean). People are needed to play all sorts of roles, most that they can invent themselves.

My character is Nuryávië, an Elf of the Southern lands (profile in a minute). A new, unknown evil is arising in the South, and Nuryávië has been sent to warn the Elves of the Northern reaches. I have some general ideas for plot, but it's very open to suggestions, etc. ;-) A few rules:

1. Please PM with character ideas before joining.
2. Absolutely NO profanity.
3. Keep true to the spirit of Tolkien - no superhuman powers, video games, etc...
4. Keep OOC posts to this thread, please.
5. Post your character's profile in THIS thread.

Anyway, here's the profile...
Name: Nuryávië

Gender: Female

Age: roughly 9,000 yrs. (grr, I kept t yping the wrong number!!!)

Home: in the South...near Gondor, and the borders of Mordor.

Hair color: dark brown, long

Eye color: hazel/brown, flecked with green at times

Other: There is a small, two-inch scar across her right cheek.

Clothing: A long, light-green gown and a dove-grey riding coat. A girdle-belt made of delicate silver links.

Weapons: A silver sword, Alkárin, which means "Glorious"

Character: Quiet, withdrawn. Very strong, but suddenly vulnerable at times. There is an air of grief about her, and she confides in few.

Hopefully this will be enough to go on. The story will open as Nuryávië arrives at her destination - the largest remaining grouping of Elves, near where Imladris once was - it will go on from there. Basically, a delegation of Elves is to be sent back South with Nuryávië, to warn the Elves lingering in ME of this new evil as well as the King of Gondor. Speculations...perhaps the evil is growing in Gondor?? We'll see...Please, PM and join!!!

Weapons: Sword from Gondolin named Nárkal, which means Fireshine, a bow made from the Mallorn tree
Character: Very proud, mysterious (not a lot is known of him as he is so old), dwelt in Valinor when the trees were there, a superb warrior and has respect for all the races of Arda (even the Orc) for of its history, only hate are trolls as they were never blessed by Ilúvatar

I am intrigued by your plot LadyDernhelm, and would there be any room for Dwarves in this RP of yours? You seem able to write well, so I may just join you. I need to check up on my other commitments first.

Likewise, my RP character is also a dwarf, and I'd like to join if possible.

If you can think of a reason why Dwarves would be on a quest with a group of Elves and at least one Man, then by all means, please PM me your ideas. ;) I see no problem, besides the fact that Elves and Dwarves are markedly not on great terms. . .

HEEEEY. Okay, what about this? It is yours to yes or no as you will...it only makes sense that if a new shadow is arising, it would affect the Dwarves as well. What if...*thinks*...what if the two of you were to represent Dwarves at the Council, and after persuasion agree to return South?

Or whatever you want...

Here's my secondary character, mostly so that I can manipulate things in the North before I actually reach there...

Name: Morilinde
Gender: Female
Home: In the North, near where Imladris used to be, among the remaining Northern Elves
Hair color: Flaxen, long
Eye color: Clear blue
Other: N/A
Weapons: A mallorn bow, very ornate
Age: 800 yrs., approximately
Character: The daughter of the councillor to the Lady of the Northern Elves, she is treated as a lady but yearns to join the Southern expedition when it is formed. . .impetuous and proud.

OK that sounds good, but can have two seperate story lines for now?

As in, you and Celeb in one, heading north, and Falim (my character) and Chokang (forgot his name, its Pippins char) are heading to the city as well, for they have been summoned to a council. They can tell of their adventures on the way, and meet up at the council, and then go from there? What do you think?

I am proposing this just because Dwarves and Elves would not travel together without good reason.

Name: Falim Stealthspear

Age: 223

Gender: Male

Race: Dwarf of Moria

Family: Burin and Heleana Stonehelm

Personality: Despises civilization, and prefers to be alone. Very apprehensive and suspicious to anyone he meets. Makes alliances with no one, and is known to leave companions when he feels the time is necessary or when his personal quest has been fulfilled. Works as a mercenary for a price.

Abilities: Fights in the dark with cunning precision and finesse. Able to see in the dark and hear in the dark as well as any Orc, and can walk as stealthily as any Hobbit.

Appearance: 4' 10", heavily armored in black plate mail, white beard and hair kept in extraordinary fashion. Cold blue eyes, and wears a thin mithril chain fastened with a single gem of sapphire around his head in place of a helm. A small buckler with his rune inscribe on it is fastened on his back.

Weapon: Narag-zigil, a stout spear of obsidian and mithril.

History: Falim was raised in Moria during the end of the third age, when Balin and other Dwarves attempted to retake Moria. After the Dwarves were assailed once again, he remained in the Mines by himself after his parents and kin were killed, living in the hidden passages for nearly a hundred years. It was in Moria where he made his legendary spear (Narag-zigil) and armor, and he lived there in secret, killing Orcs stealthily and clearing the hidden passages. Rumor grew of a Dwarf-ghost wreaking havoc in the Mines, and many Orcs were slaughtered silently by his stealthy hand. After the War of the Ring, the outside Dwarves eventually reclaimed their realm and Falim made himself known by aiding them. He is called "Stealthspear" by many, and is known for his expertise in stealth fighting. In the deep places of the earth, Falim has felt the reawakening of evil, and hastens to the city of Imaldris to seek further council. He has left silently and travels without a trace.

Celebthol- please try to use grammar and capitilization and spelling in your posts! They have good content, but they are written in poor form. Also, I dont know how your Elf could know that Falim left Moria... in my profile it says he left silently and without a trace.

I know it sounds picky, but if we start paying attention to detail now, it will be a better RP in the long run.

I agree. One thing I've found helpful --

Paragraphs get smashed if you don't double space

like

this to keep things separate.

Paragraphs are very helpful in keeping it clean and nice-looking, which is much easier to read . . .

Here ya go, lady. Looks like fun!

Name: Trahald the Tainted

Race/Gender: human/male

Appearance: black, roving eyes that don't miss very much, black hair, black skin, pantaloons, slashed vest, bandana covering the top of his head and missing left ear, a belt holding his weapons and various potions and poisons, average height and build

Personality: smart, only thinks about himself, if he's nice to anybody, it's only because he thinks he has something to gain from it, he can be very flattering, harsh, condescending, or aloof, depending on the situation, usually pretty cheerful, though, has no morals whatsoever

Weapons: usually uses a bludgeon and scimitar, but has plenty of other weapons in his wagon

History: a Southron, kidnapped by corsairs of Umbar at a superly young age, since he was too weak then to row, he was the captain's personal servant, the dude wasn't very nice, he mostly got to work in the kitchen with a very talented chef, he learned to be a great chef himself, he also learned how to make potions and poisons from this guy, I guess he was good friends with one of those healer dudes from Minas Tirith, he tried to poison the captain, but he kind of made the poison wrong, the captain just got sick, he killed Trahald's mentor, chopped his left ear off, gave him his crazy title, he was able to escape after making supper for everybody, putting them to sleep with crazy potions, he killed the captain with his own scimitar, he ran away, begged for a while in small towns in Gondor, became a pickpocket, hung out in bars, learned how to be a successful gambler, went north, ran into Boffin and Tolir, after a while, he acquired enough merchandise in games of chance that he started his own traveling business, Trahald's Itinerant Armoury (and apothecary, and toyshop), travels Middle Earth all the time, looking for profits

Name: Boffin, son of Bofur

Race/Gender: Dwarf/male

Appearance: not very smart looking, blue eyes always looking off into space, blond hair, long, not very neat beard, colorful clothes that might look good at a formal dinner, under a not very well made coat of mail, has an outrageous looking helm that was only used by his ancestors in ceremonies

Personality: absent minded, forgetful, loyal, friendly to anyone, sickeningly innocent sometimes, admires elves, is embarrassed around most Dwarves

Weapons: just a mace and dagger, sorry

History: born to a rich family in the Lonely Mountain, he was given the finest tutors, but he wasn't a very fast learner, he couldn't make weapons, he couldn't remember history, he barely remembers any of the secret Dwarf language, he can barely see in dark caves, he tires easily, he's always hungry, he was able to make a few toys every now and then, he was cast out of the mountain to learn some common sense, ran into an adventuring group of elves and humans, helped them out, learned to appreciate elven type stuffs, unlike most Dwarves, learned a few of their languages, hung out with them for a while, left to have adventures with Tolir in the north, ran into Trahald the Tainted and makes toys for him

Other: gots a white and gold pony named Pooftop

Name: Tolir

Race/Gender: human/male

Appearance: one of those huge, scary, but harmless looking type dudes, bright red skin from working with Dwarves and not having skin as resistant as their's, brown hair, brown eyes, very Dwarvish looking clothes, pretty good armour he made himself while hanging out with Dwarves

Personality: definitely a follower, if he was left alone, he wouldn't know what to do with himself, he'd have to find some place to work for someone, not very smart, not much of a personality, is usually quiet and thinking to himself, doesn't like to talk to most people, but is superly loyal

Weapons: a huge battle axe, a dirk in his boot

History: born in a small town north of the Shire, went to some Dwarves in the Grey mountains to become a blacksmith, when he was coming back to his hometown, he found that his family had been killed by trolls, he joined a group of elves and humans on some quest, ran into Boffin, they ran into Trahald the Tainted later, he is happily working for him as a bodyguard

Other: gots a horse named Fred, but he's boring, too

Mablung
03-03-2003, 11:09 PM
Name: Caradun Silverhands

Gender: Male

Home: Gondor

Race: Dunedain

Hair color: Not quite shoulder length brown hair.

Eye color: Green

Weapons: An oaken bow, An iron sword, An iron shield.

Character: A very affable and friendly person. He has been protecting the lands of the North for most of his life from any lingering forces. Convinced that the threat has abated however he has returned south to try and find a normal life.

Hey, people - mainly YayGollum and Celebthôl (and Dáin) - how long should it take us to reach Rivendell? I mean, I don't think it should take TOO long because there's still a lot to go afterwards. ;) If you guys have any input/preference, please speak up or forever hold your peace...

YayGollum
03-04-2003, 03:01 AM
Well, I don't have any bookses with me, but don't they all have little scales telling you how many miles equal how many inches or whatever? oh well. If nobody else has one of those on their little mapses, I can get the number of days the next time I'm here. oh well.

LadyDernhelm

I have a book right here, let me check it out...

Where EXACTLY were we starting from? I had thought when I originally started that it was on the banks of the Anduin, somewhere between Gondor and Lorien, but that's pretty vague. ;-) Let me check the book now...

LadyDernhelm
03-04-2003, 03:07 AM
Looks like if we were to have met near Lorien, it would be very roughly 400 miles to Rivendell. Before that, it would've been longer, obviously ;)

Dáin Ironfoot I
03-04-2003, 03:25 AM
Notice: the Dwarf Falim encountered is Chokang. He is also way ahead of the other travelers, as he left earlier, and from Moria. Falim will reach Imaldris before you all.

LadyDernhelm
03-04-2003, 03:28 AM
Oh, thanks, Dáin. I was just thinking we needed an alternate POV!!!!! Chokang is your character, correct?

That's good that they get to Imladris first . . . it makes sense, seeing as the starting places are so different. Question - from which end of Moria did Falim emerge? The entrance to Moria, with the doors of Durin, or the exit, near Lorien?

YayGollum
03-04-2003, 03:37 AM
Chokang is that Pippin_Took person's character. Anyways, Yikes! Too bad you elf people love to brag about how fast your horses are! Unless he steps in a gopher hole, I'll be talking to myself the whole way to Rivendell. oh well.

I left through Durin's doors.

But if you did, how come you had to cross Caradhras? Seeing as Durin's doors are on the RIGHT side of Caradhras to head to Rivendell?

Or maybe you DIDN'T pass Caradhras, just saw it. I don't know, I'm just confused . . .:(

Hey, we still need MORE PEOPLE!!! We are going to need people to step in when we reach Rivendell. We need someone to be the Queen, the Lady of Rivendell, and then we need others to be in the council and return South. If you're interested in any of these or another role, please PM me! ! Thank you. . .

The-Elf-Herself
03-10-2003, 03:09 AM
Okay, I'm not sure if I'm the right person to play the Queen of Rivendell, but I can contribute a couple of elves for the council and perhaps the trip back to the southern regions.

The first character is Earmaiwen. If this seems more complete than the profile I put up on the "Great Quest to Pillage Barad-dur RPG" discussion thread, it's because I edit her full profile depending on what is absolutely necessary to know about her for an RPG.

Name: Earmaiwen

Race: Sindarin elf

Gender: female

Age at the time of this RPG: roughly 1700 years(give or take a few decades)

Appearance: Brown hair, brownish eyes, average height. Not as fair as most of her kindred, can(and usually is) mistaken for a human when she is garbed as one of them. Dresses in plain brown traveling clothes.

Place of Birth: Mithlond

Occupation: an information trader who co-owns a business in that field

Weapons: wields a rapier, long knife, and a pair of slender silver
daggers. All is plainly made, without the usual elvish inscriptions, and she gives names to none of them.

Skills: many and varied, often in surprising areas

Personality: Normally very blunt, although can be quite polished when she wishes, very calculating. Has a fine appreciation for the ironic and is not easily roused; when angry is deadly to the source of her anger. Can accept allies quickly and detect enemies nearly as quickly. Is independent of her kin, sundered from their ways of thinking, in part due to an impairment she was born with.

History: suffered from a rare childhood disease that she battles daily with the aid of a white herb. Basically when she was born her spirit was already aged to the point of devouring her physical body. This normally only occurs to elves who have lived tens of thousands of years or to elves that have faded after denying the call to Valinor during the Fourth Age; eventually they are only visible to the naked eyes if their spirit wills it. When the disease takes hold, it is due to a loss of self-control, when she becomes angry or in pain; at these times she glows with a bright light, emanating from her burning spirit and her physical form begins to fade away. Decided to stay behind when her siblings and parents took ship to Valinor. After a near-fatal relapse she began to revert into invisibilty, a side effect she can now control to her will. Only other elves can sense her when she reverts. After becoming visible she also glows briefly and during those first brief moments she is very hostile and tense. An insatiable desire for knowledge and understanding of the people and places around her first prompted Ear to start her information business.

Other: due to her disease she rarely needs to eat or sleep for the fading of her hroa, while stilled by the herb, does not require the same sustanence as healthy elves. Also, her illness is only contagious to other elves and that through any direct contact with her. Therefore her kind tend to steer clear of her.

________________

Here's perhaps a councilor for that council at Rivendell, will probably join Ear in traveling to back down South.

Name: Lirraum

race: Telerin elf(sea-elf)

Gender: male

Age at time of this RPG: 5,000

Place of Birth: Tol Eressea

Appearance: silver hair, dark grey eyes, tall. Goes around garbed and cloaked in grey.

Weapons: when traveling is armed with a bow of silvery wood and matching arrows.

Personality: friendly around other elves, although he is very aloof at times, even secretive. Interested in the happenings of other lands. Does not get angry easily and always thinks things through carefully before doing anything. Pretty honest and true to those that he has pledged his loyalty.

Skills: as with Ear they are diverse, though not as numerous

Job: esteemed advisor to the counsels of the High elves. Has a separate life in which he is the co-owner of Ear's information trading business.

Background: born in Tol Eressea, became learned and respected among the elves there. Is a distant cousin of the house of Olwë, explaining the rare silver hair. Spent long periods of time on the Isle of Numenor, left for Middle Earth when unrest grew among the Numenoreans. Fought in the battle of the last Alliance and resided in Rivendell afterwards. He became good friends with Ear's older brother Ohtar. Before he left for Valinor he asked Lirraum to keep an eye on his sister, just to ensure her safety. After realizing she couldn't rid herself of him, Ear included him in her fledgling information trade and they have been allies for a long time. When traveling he steals away to the locations of her contacts, checking on them and helps her with the logistics of payment and retribution.

Other: is assidious in carrying out his oath to her brother, as well as being her closest friend and so is very protective of Ear. Very wary of elves finding out his other profession and equally wary of others finding out about his position among the elves.

I have been ordered to toss this suggestion into this thread for everyone to agree with. Since I noticed that this LadyDernhelm's little signature is asking for more help, I tried to come up with something. You people know how Beorn wanted to go back to the Misty Mountains? Well, I'm saying that some of these people could run into a little Beorning settlement. I gots me a superly cool Beorning character. But then, this LadyDernhelm person said that she doesn't need any more characters just yet. I don't know. Maybe you people could run into the place later? Ack! Gots to go!

LadyDernhelm
03-19-2003, 08:26 PM
Which quickest solution would be. . .

I was actually stalling, waiting until we had more people in Rivendell. But let's push ahead; we have at least three! LOL. Plesae, current players, recruit people! We need:

Elves in Imladris to sit on the council (minor)
Elves in Imladris to journey South (major)
Dwarves in Imladris to sit on the council (minor)
Two Dwarves in Imladris to journey South (major - possibly taken by Dain and P_T???)
Men in Imladris to sit on the council (minor)
Men in Imladris (like, two) to journey South (major)

And, if possible, a QUEEN OF THE ELVES!!!! AAARGH!!!

Yes, hurry it up, Celeb. We don't want to keep all the others waiting.

Mablung
03-19-2003, 08:27 PM
LD, right now we can have you be the Queen or we can have The Elf Herself be the Queen. Unless someone know's where we can get a new RPr on short notice. I can also do the second man if you want me too and we can find no one else. Then the ones that sit on the council can be the same that Journey same with the Dwarves and the Elves unless you have something else plotting in your mind.

LadyDernhelm
03-19-2003, 08:31 PM
Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking we'd have to do for the moment.

I had wanted more people on the Council than the journey, but oh well - this will do fine.

Thanks, Mablung. Your taking the second Man would be greatly appreciated.

Also, Yay - are you planning on returning South? Just wondering. Feel free to do so!

OK, LD- could you PM Dain and ask him why he isn't posting?
He's on the forum, but must have forgotten about this.

I can certainly PM Dain.

Okay, so now we're just waiting for Dain. . .and Mablung.

Yay, I wanted more people ont he council than the Journey. It makes more sense.

Fine fine don't let me hold everyone up. Not very good characters now I'll admit, but they'll come into their own in the actual RPG.

Name: Naris Skysight

Gender: Male

Home: Minas Tirith

Race: Dunedain

Hair color: Not quite shoulder length blonde hair.

Eye color: Brown

Weapons: An oaken bow, An iron sword, An iron shield.

Character: A very affable and friendly person. He has been protecting the lands of the North for most of his life from any lingering forces. Now that all traces of extremely dangerous evil have been erased from those lands he returns home to Minas Tirith.

Okay, this is actually going to be on hold for a week.

Mablung is going to be on spring break. We'll do it when he gets back.

Sorry about the false alarm! but we really do need to have everyone present if this council thing is to work.

As of tonight, I am going to make a few opening posts in Rivendell.

This will include describing things, little things. NOT the Council, which will probably begin on Sunday, when Mablung is back.

If anyone else would like to post arrival in Rivendell / reaction / etc. feel free to do so. If you'd like to interact with the yet-nameless Elven Queen, PM me or post here and we'll fix it up.

Thanks everyone for your cooperation!!!

LadyDernhelm- In regards to Thorin's letter, make up what you want. I only made a mention of it because delivering letters for the King is Chokang's job.

What I had in mind was that Chokang was not originally planned to be in the Council, but you somehow talk him into being a part of it.

Celebthôl, would you mind deleting your OOC post on the RPG Thread? Thanks, that would be very helpful.

Yes, that would be much appreciated ;-)

By the way, I hope you're not offended or anything by having had to delete that post. It DID help to speed things up though. We had several people waiting at Rivendell who were getting impatient. . .

Okay, um do you have anything in particular in mind for the time and place of this council LD or can I just make up an answer?

LadyDernhelm

Make up an answer, I have nothing in mind. However, in real life Planet-Earth time, the council is (hopefully) going to start Sunday. We have to wait till Mablung is back. But in Middle-Earthian time, other t han the place being somewhere within Rivendell ~ no, nothing.

Hey, Dáin, who's the Elven woman Falim met? Is it a character of yours, or one of mine?

Thanks. . .

The woman is the Queen of Rivendell. I hope it fits in, because I thought it was a really good post myself. So the Queen and Falim are coming to the meeting together... would that be alright?

Okay, that works out great!!! It WAS a beautiful post, Dain.

As of Sunday, March 30:

I'm off to start the Council! I'm writing hte part of Lady Erinwen as well as Nuryavie, so it'll start off immediately. I'm going to have Nuryavie present her message, and then it'll be open to discussion.
