FoolOfATook

I've been thinking about ways to improve the Guild, and it occured to me that it might be worthwile to sort of formally introduce ourselves to each other. Most of us know one another, but this could be useful to new members, and who knows- maybe we can all learn something. Anyway, I don't think it can hurt. ;)

03-15-2003, 01:01 PM
Name: Eledhwen - a descriptive name given to Morwen.
Age: 47
A Christian. My Church website: www.sfc-uk.org
Occupation: I'm the secretary of the local Chamber of Commerce.
Family: Husband (Maths and chess!), grown-up son (computers) and daughter (music and art), and three young daughters age 10, 8 and 6.
Interests: Reading, writing (just completed a screenwriting course), walking - preferably on mountains, but the Downs will do, singing and playing violin (not both at the same time - the violin wobbles), drawing and painting (when I get the chance).
Guild Rank: None. I may get round to being tested... maybe.
Favourite Tolkien literature? It's all good, I like the FotR at Crickhollow, where Frodo learns his secret isn't so secret after all; and I like the story of Beren and Luthien (incl BolT version). For big drama, the Fall of Gondolin as described in BolT2.
I like the films Beleg_Strongbow listed - they're pacey and well-timed. I like the LotR films too, as films. No all-time favourite though.
Taste in music - anything dynamic and good. Also some quiet stuff. So - Tchaikowsky, Hildegard von Bingen, Status Quo, Enya...
My aims for this year are: 1. to get my screenplay portfolio sorted; 2. to get plans for an arts centre underway in my town; 3. to go somewhere interesting this summer.
My aim for this week: To go for a pub lunch in the Eagle and Child, Oxford EDIT: (achieved - even though the car broke down!)
(I had to delete and remake this post as it wouldn't let me change the photo!)

Mrs. Maggott
03-23-2003, 03:00 AM
Mrs. Maggott
Age: 62 (on May 30th)
Religion: I am an Orthodox Christian; my husband is a Deacon in the Orthodox Church in America and I sing in the choir (and haven't been shot at yet!).
Position or Rank in the Guild: None at the moment. I want to take some test, but I keep forgetting to do it - and that does not bode well for my eventual placement.
Occupation: Artist/Craftsman/Iconographer (paint, fabric, stained glass); also run a legal typing service.
Married with 2 children (daughter 37, son 33)
Ethnic background: Celtic, English, Hobbit (and maybe a little troll...)
Favorites Composers: Ralph Vaughn Williams, Alan Hovanhess, Jean Sibelius, Celtic music, soundtracks.
Favorite Books: Tolkien, medieval history, mysteries (Robert Van Gulik) the Harry Potter books, lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of books......
Animals: favorite: cats but I have a Peke; I love all animals but I can live far away from spiders and other creepy crawlies (except ladybugs, lightening bugs and butterflies). However, I do love reptiles (the non-poisonous variety).
Films: I love all the old, B sci-fi B&W films from the 50s. I like monstor movies, but I hate these "splatter films". A good scary film (the original Psycho) is fine, but many of these films are just disgusting. Some of their directors have Mr. Jackson's problem: they have never learned that less is often more.
What do I hope to do this year? Probably reach 63 without falling apart - but winning the lottery would be nice!

I'm very glad you do! :)
Can we see a photo when your hair's pink (not very medieval/Anglo Saxon!).
If I'm brave enough, sure! Well, who knows what those Anglo Saxons REALLY did for fun...
I have a friend who does Medieval re-enactments - he travels around the country going to the actual sites of battles etc. Cool, I'd love to see that. What culture/time period does he portray? Is he a knight? In our group, we have real knights with shiny silver armor and everything and they really wack each other up-side the head, but the "swords" are rattan, not sharp metal, so nobody gets killed! ;)

03-27-2003, 03:43 PM
Well, the early "English" - Angles, Anglo-Saxons, Picts and Celts - all painted themselves blue with woad if I remember correctly. Mel Gibson did it for Braveheart although certainly by the time of Wallace it was centuries after such decorative 'war paint' was being used. I think it is more about the time of the Romans and before that the custom was used.
But, who knows? If Queen Boadicea (sp?) had dyed her hair pink, maybe she would have driven the Romans from the British Isles! :p

This will give me the chance of study Tolkien's works deeply, cause I'm going to write an MA diploma project closely related with HIM, Elves and Middle-earth;)

Favorite Tolkien work: LOTR, I guess. That and the Hobbit are all I've read so far.
Favorite Middle Earth moment: In the movies, I think it's the times when Golum is talking to himself. That or the Council of Elrond. In the books...wow that's hard...I think it's the point when Sam thinks Frodo dies.
LOTR moment that makes you say "what did you do that for?!":
I would say the part when Borimer tries to take the ring from Frodo, but I hate dumb Borimer so it's not that one. I guess it would have to be in the second movie at the battle of Helms Deep when that elf(what was his name?) Gets shot with an orc arrow and dies. I hate watching people that can't die, die. My opinion might change however, when ROTK come out this Christmas.

It's not always the same .Many people like Tolkien but they have totally different tastes. For example many people who like Tolkien listen to black metal and all sorts of metal and hard rock thinking that's the music which fits best to Tolkien's works and world. But I do not listen to such kind of music. You know I listen house,techno,jazz,trip-hop,ambient,dub,chill out,dark-hop,new age etc.
As you can see totally different tastes.

Well, yes and I like pop-folk too...and you don't...;)
But anyway, books at least are not like music, books are different. If a book sucks nobody will like it...
What I mean actually, is that if a person likes a book there's a much bigger possibility for another person to like it too then if this similarities were connected with music.

How introduced to Tolkien: As a small child, around 7 or 8. I was already an avid reader then, and my father kept boxes and boxes of old books (mostly classics) stored in our basement. We children were not supposed to touch these books, but I would sneak in and read them anyway. Among the many jewels stored in those boxes was The Hobbit. I read it, and loved it! I checked my school library to see if they had any more books by Tolkien, but they didn't, so I persuaded my parents to take me to the public library, and there, we found LOTR. My parents read the book with me the first time, but over the years, I've read it, and other Tolkien books many times.

Tolkien book you'd like to read next: The Adventures of Tom Bombadil

I think we can use the Photo Gallery in the Members announcements for these pictures.
And we can post the link here, casue it this place doesn't seem the best for pictures. That's why we have Photo Gallery.
Please post your pictures there and the link.
I think that is the better ,than just fulfilling the Guild with pictures.

No, G-G. I'm afraid I can't agree with you on this!
Why would I place my photo in that other place? I have posted my pics HERE because I am happy to meet my friends and them - meeting me - HERE! What would be the reason to post them THERE?
Besides, this place is all right for pics of us. After all it is called "Meet the Guild" :)
So, my friend, I still hold to that if somebody shares my opinion can post her/his photos here and if she/he wishes so, post them (or link them) in that other thread.
Don't you think it's fair? :)

Once upon a time........Lantarion asked me not to speak about my alcoholic experience and deeds, because young people are reading the posts.
Now I have to ask you not to post any comments related with alcohol. It can be harmful for some young members.
I don't like this fact but I've gotta have it in mind.I wish everything was like in Bulgaria and the laws there, but I am afraid it is not.

You'll be fine. I'd suggest you take a look at a few debates, past and present, in TTF. Some are team debates, and some are one-on-one. Then if you still fancy having a go, make sure you only agree to debate a subject you feel confident you can make good arguments about.
You're American, right? (We here in England don't say "gotten"). How did you get interested in rugby?
celebdraug
11-26-2003, 04:55 PM

And i am from England actually! :D:D, i dunno why i say gotten- just a habbit?
I got into Rugby when i watched the England and Australien match! it was awesome (awesone is kinda a england word!)

Thanks Eledhwen, but this is something that often puzzles me.
I am a dutchman, living in France, yet finding myself correcting english native speakers on their language. Now I know my english is certainly not the worst around, so I have been told on many occasion, but it still strikes me as odd. Does this entail that the level of the english language taught in the netherlands is quiite high, or that the teaching/use of it in the country of origin is fading?
I'll leave you with a quote I read recently:
England and America are two countries, divided by the same language. ;)

I think it's simply the case (as with all languages) that people who are not native speakers of a language will take more care when using it as they often need to think more carefully about what they're going to say, the upshoot of which being that they are more likely to have correct grammer, vocab and whatnot.
From my own experience it seems that a native speaker is more interested in simply getting his point across, whereas a foreigner is often overly concerned with his/her manner of speaking.

Alright Govener! :D But i think Marvellous is kind of a posh term for me!:D. Okay, so now i see why you think im american! lol!
I need to inprove my English vocab.

You may have a point there, gil. But is it not also a fact, that a foreigner (even when he is not so concerned with his grammar) is more likely to use less slang?
Celeb, you're doing fine, but you now know why people would think so. Tally Ho. ;)

Well... I'm grond. I used to be quite popular here but the real world has intruded and forced me out of Middle-earth. It was with the effort of many that this guild has become a force to be reckoned with and I am very proud of that... and very proud of everyone who had a part in that... especially Lhun and all the other GM and Deputy GM's who made this happen.
I wish all of you the best and hope that you will think of me with fondness and know that I still love Tolkien and I still think of you all.
Cheers,
grond
