View Full Version : The New Heren Istarion Timeline: ALL READ

Alright, the new timeline is finally here! I will outline how things will work and will try to give you all a basic feel for things. If you have any questions, by all means feel free to post!

The Heren Istarion Timeline

- One Heren Istarion day is comprised of four real days.

The purpose of this "HI day" is to create a completely realistic world which runs in actual days and weeks. This will make the trainers start their classes and have all classes ready when it is their allotted class time.

- Use your time wisely.

During each HI day it is recommended that you use your time wisely. Have your character wake up in the morning at the dorms (though you may not want to do this every new day), have your character attend his/her required classes for that day, meet your friends, make meetings for "tomorrow", eat meals, etc. Be realistic and have fun!

- There will be a calendar.

Each class (Archery, Geography of Arda, Healing, etc.) will NOT happen every single day. A calendar will be laid out so that there will be only one or two Archery classes per week, only one or two Healing classes a week, etc.

- A class can only last one HI day and absolutely no more.

This will force teachers to actually train in their classes. All teachers will have four real days (our days) to make one decent class. Then, the class will be finished.

- Do not miss your classes!

Be watching the calendar closely so that you do not miss your classes! If you miss a class you will be marked tardy, and this will show up on your record.

- Teachers, you MUST start your classes on time and end them on time!

This means you have four days maximum to complete one class. HI must keep rolling on, and four days is more than enough time to complete one class.

- A HI day does not have to happen in chronological order.

We cannot allot time by the hour. That would get far too complicated, so the best we can do is allot it by the day. This means that you do not have to start at the beginning of the four days by posting the stuff that happens in the morning. You can begin the four days by posting something that happens in the evening if you wish. This will enable you to make the most out of your day. For example: It is Monday and the beginning of the four real day period which makes up one HI day. I have to make a geography class at 10:00 a.m., an archery class at 3:00 p.m., and I have a party in the dorms at 6:00 p.m. I can post all these things at one time on the VERY FIRST real day of a HI day if I want. I do not have to chronologically order the hours of my day so that the party at 6:00 happens only on the last real day of a HI day. No, I can start the party on the first real day of a HI day.

- You have four real days to accomplish all your classes, your parties, your meetings with friends, your studies, etc., that happen in one HI day.

Four days is all you have. If you miss a class then you will have missed that class. When the four days are over, a new HI day will start with new classes and new fun.

- Try not to have your character at more than one place at once!

It is your responsibility to make sure that your character does not have two engagements at once. You can't have your character eating dinner at 5:00 p.m. and having a class at 5:00 p.m. Teachers cannot regulate this, so you must be responsible of your own time! Try to be realistic and try not to let your commitments happen at the same time. Remember, you have engagements now... I'd recommend a day-planner. ;)

- I have not created the calendar yet but will have it ready by Monday (hopefully).

- This new timeline will begin on the nearest Monday as soon as I have the calendar prepared (hopefully this Monday).

- I have not yet figured out what year we are in... I will let everyone know that when I figure it out.

- Pretty soon we should be able to celebrate months, years, days, etc.! This will be amazing once things start running smoothly.

- Yes, there may be many mess-ups and a few confusing things. I am in charge of making sure that everything runs smoothly, and I'm expecting a bumpy few weeks to start this off. If you have any questions at all, please let me know!

- One of the biggest benefits of this timeline will be that it will force the teachers to actually teach. ;) I hope all the students will enjoy this. :D

I must say, Nenya, I have a problem with this right now. A rather large problem. You say classes both end and start on time and are not every day. Well what if a trainer gives a test. He has to wait for EVERY SINGLE STUDENT to pm him with the answers before he can move on. It has been 2 weeks since I gave my people of arda quiz and I am STILL getting them back. Do you have an answer?

Nenya Evenstar
03-13-2003, 09:52 PM
All you'd have to do would be to give a test and give the students, say, a Heren Istarion week (28 real days) to return it to you. Just have deadlines. If the students miss the deadlines, they fail.

Also, this already passed the Grand Council, and we decided to try it. If it doesn't work, we will can the idea. However, you can never know if something works until you try it.

I see problems with this as well.

When someone does not have much time to attend, he thus misses classes (and I do mean miss). When a trainer is short on time, he could fail to end a class on time, whether or not it is due to himself or to the students.

Not all people post this frequent, that they can focus for four days in a row, upon a single thread. Much less to several of them.

As for Anamatar's test, for those who read Tolkiens work in english, this test might be easy. Unfortunately, I have only been able to get a dutch copy so far.... thus have to search for translations as well. (Mind you, I didn't read the entire thread yet.)

I dont see a thing wrong with it. If people cannot do a test in 28 days then they deserve to fail.

CelebrianTiwele

The test thing may be ok. 28 days is a long time. But I'm sure there are many people who are not allowed on the internet during the week. I, personally, can only post every 2 weeks, give or take a few days. This probably won't work for me, but its a wonderful idea.

Dain, I don't disagree with that part of it, even though this is not as easy for everyone.

The point I am trying to make is that a lot of people cannot be online for four days in a row, thus will fail classes and will make them lose interest. This will cost the guild members, when they cannot really participate or complete classes, which is precisely the opposite of what we are trying to achieve.

Nenya Evenstar
03-14-2003, 08:20 PM
One thing that you are failing to see is that you do not necessarily HAVE to participate in a class unless your trainer gives you an assignment. All you have to do is post that you are there, watching. This means that you only have to visit the forum every four days, if need be. You can read up on the classes whenever. As long as you know the information, good, you'll be fine. For those of you who are worried about participation, this is all you'll need to do. Trainers can change what they do to accommodate you. We do not want to lost students.

I am sure we can work something out for those of you with very limited time. As long as you read the classes and pass the tests, you'll be fine.

It seems like a good idea.... but... when are we/did we begin this timeline? If I can get my classes started correctly I THINK I can keep up alright. :p

I'm glad you made that a little clearer, Nenya.

By all means proceed then. :)

You are very welcome! Thank you for voicing your concerns, Scatha.

The new timeline will be beginning on Monday. I will be making the calendar and will have it to everyone before then.

Here is the timeline. Please look at the classes that you are teaching (I have put in parenthesis who I think is teaching them) and see if that time will work for you. I have tried to spread out the classes so as to give each trainer the most efficient amount of time to prepare for each class. However, you may want your classes moved. Let me know where you'd like them and I'll move them. Also, please check to see if the amount of time I have allotted for your classes is realistic. I have put fifteen minutes between each class to give the students the time to walk from class to class. :p

Building?
War strategizing?

Group fighting and troop formations should be an integral part of war strategy. This since the latter cannot function without the first two.

I hope this makes sense to those that have never been in the military forces.

Pippin's suggested 'building', would also fall under that category, but could be best described as 'fortification'. This large class should be given by someone with at least a little experience in actual warfare.

One little problem Nenya- Elessar now has me teaching mounted archery, but I have decided to work it into my normal archery class. Is this a big problem? :(
Also, perhaps I missed something, but I don't quite understand how the times work out. I know there are four days to a HI day, but... hmmm, am I just not good in math? :P
I'm sorry to bother you with dumb questions like this

I do not know, but Nenya, I am NOT teaching group fighting and troop formations. I simply started the threads (of which I am regreting at the moment). I know this but had no other name to put beside those classes. It would be nice to know who is teaching them... we need to know within a few days, if possible. Same with Building and War Strategizing.

Scatha, that's a good point about War Strategizing. Could you do me a favor and post your concerns in the Teacher's Discussion thread where teachers can discuss it? Thanks! :)

I do not know how we have decided to classify Building. Is it a class that teaches people to build dwellings and magnificent architecture (i.e. a class that would interest Dwarves), or is it a class teaches the building of fortifications as Scatha suggested? Is it both?

ILLOTRTM, if you have any more questions let me know. I'll try to make sense. :D I've combined the two archery classes into one.

nope... will the time line also be use n hi rps. the lengh of an day than I mean or will we just keep on going as usual? The timeline will be used in everything that happens with your characters during their actual training, i.e. everything that goes on within this guild (The Dorms, all classes, The Teacher's Complex, etc.). Any RP that is started to better the students does not have to follow the timeline UNLESS you want the things that happen there to really happen to your characters. If it's just for learning and does not impact your character, then it doesn't have to follow the timeline.

Nenya, PLEASE hold this off for a few days. I want the campus activities to me incorporated into it. I only have these preferences in that:

Campus activities can be before or after class

There should not be more than 1 going on at any given time

They can be on days off like weekends

They would only be half an hour HI time.

Nenya Evenstar
03-17-2003, 09:54 PM
Don't worry, we have eight days until this actually starts. I don't think we can afford to wait any more than that. That's a whole week to get stuff like this sorted out.

I'll get the campus activities into the schedule ASAP.

Ok, I've added all the extra-curricular activities into the calendar. I made the Drama Club and the Stage Crew meet at the same time because I figured that they would kind of go along together. If this is ever a problem, let me know.

Any activities that the clubs want to host can be put on the weekends. I'm thinking that we could have tournaments and stuff on Saturday . . . but that's just a thought from me.

I've updated the student list as well. Please let me know if I need to change anything concerning the list or the calendar!

You've been added, Phenix.

elfgirl, I would suggest that you just try to make all your classes the first couple weeks. All you'll have to do is post once in each class and read whatever your teachers say so that you know what is going on. If you are still struggling with time, then you could drop classes. I really don't think that this system will be much more crazy than the current one . . . but if you're taking too many classes it might. We'll just have to see. So, try fitting your classes first but if that doesn't work, cut some out.

I know that some of my fellow students of Heren Istarion might be or might have been confused by this calander/timeline thingy at first. I was confused at first too, but I've worked out something that might help. What I did was made a schedule for my individual character. For example, this is Lita's (my character's) schedule:

Monday
-------
8:45-9:45=Nothing
10:00-11:00=History of Arda
11:15-3:45=Nothing
4:00-6:00=Archery
6:15-8:15=Nothing

Tuesday
--------
10:00-11:00=Races of Arda
11:15-12:15=Nothing
12:30-2:00=Knife Play
2:15-6:15=Nothing
6:30-7:30=Drama Club

Wednesday
----------
8:45-9:45=Nothing
10:00-11:00=People of Arda
11:15-8:45=Nothing

Thursday
---------
8:45-9:45=Tournament Team
10:00-11:00=Geography of Arda
11:15-1:15=Nothing
1:30-3:30=Stealth Fighting
3:45-7:00=Nothing

Friday
-------
8:45-12:00=Nothing
12:15-2:15=Hand-to-Hand Combat
2:30-8:15=Nothing

I feel that if you take just a little time to work out your own schedule in a similar manner, it will save a lot of time and confusion. If you're thinking "Buzz off you crazy hobbit, I've no time for this foolishness" then that's fine by me. :D

Well, you can post in those classes (if the threads have been started) and officially chew out the trainers . . . that is option number one. Then I will top it off by chewing them out as well. ;)

I am kicking Azog out of teaching Concussion Weapons. I will get a new teacher for that class as soon as possible. EDIT: Azog is very busy right now at home. I am having teachers take over his classes temporarily.

As for History of Arda . . . I have absolutely no idea why Galdor has not posted. If he continues to do this I will take over the class for him. EDIT: Galdor did post . . . he just edited his last post so no one got prompted.

All you can really do now is skip those classes and move on to the next day. Hopefully this will never happen again. I am sorry to all students who have not been able to attend their classes!

Students, most of your new classes have started. I will be teaching Races of Arda until Azog gets back into the swing of things on the forum. I have not yet found a teacher for Concussion Weapons (to replace Azog for a while) but hopefully should soon. :)

Keep looking at the calendar on the first page for a completely updated timeline.

Nenya have you found a teacher yet to replace Azog. Because I belive he teaches axe throwing.

Nenya Evenstar
04-02-2003, 09:42 PM
No, I haven't yet. If I can't find someone who knows more about axe throwing than I do by tomorrow, I'll start it. :)

The_Swordmaster
04-02-2003, 09:46 PM
Not to put him on the spot. But would Dain be a good teacher for a while since that classes is mostly about dwarves and he is a teacher now. Hope you don't mind I recomended you Dain.

Nenya Evenstar
04-02-2003, 10:35 PM
Not at all . . . maybe he'll listen to a student's recommendation over mine. ;)

Dain, do you want to take Axe Throwing on over into the Dwarf Darrow? Maybe you could combine a few classes?

Here is another that you might be able to combine somehow:

Concussion Weapons
Axe Throwing

They're both pretty Dwarvish.

Well according to the schedule Stealth Fighting doesn't start until April 6th thus the reason I have not joined the class yet.

I was wondering...would it be too difficult to change the timeline from 4 real days=1 HI day to 5 real days=1 HI day.

Cos I keep missing my classes by 1 day... :(

Nenya Evenstar
04-03-2003, 03:51 PM
No, it wouldn't be all that difficult, actually. What does everyone else prefer?

BTW, Concussion Weapons and Axe Throwing have been started. Make sure you attend them on their correct days.

ILLOTRTM

Changing the HI day to five real life days wouldn't bother me. it would give me more time to think about my classes. :D Then again, my opinion is subject to change on this. Oh well... see what everyone else thinks. :)

Mablung
04-03-2003, 11:08 PM
I think 5 would be great.

SUGGESTION:

I suggest that we temporarily stop classes until the move to Middle-earth RPG's is finished. I do not want the chaos of trying to move in the middle of a week of classes.

We could always start up on Monday if need be after the move. We have that flexibility . . . who knows? It could be spring break. :p

Anamatar IV
04-21-2003, 06:37 PM
Way ahead of you. . .;)

Speaking of classes...there are some classes required for all people like People of Arda, Races of Arda, Geography of Arda, and History Arda. I am asking the trainers of all of these classes to give a TEST on Dengen-Goroth's and Snaga's lectures in the Grand Gazeebo. Each trainer of these classes will give 5 questions about what they said (not 5 for Dengen 5 for Snaga...5 in total). This is just to make sure you have read the thread. We will give the tests next time you have each of these classes.:)

Wonko The Sane

I HAVE read the thread...thoroughly.
I posted there...LOTS.

Can't you take my word for it? :D

Anyway, I think I smell graduation soon. ;)
