I don't think they are going to have the scorning of the shire or the stone of erech parts. They can't have the scorning of the shire because sam wasn't given the box with the mallorn seed (in the extended edition dvd he only recived rope) and the paths of the dead bit isn't absalootly nessasary to the plot and is a bit dark. I personally love both parts and infact the entire thing!

Yes the Scouring will not be in the movie, PJ says it in th EE Director Commentary. The Paths of the Dead is to big of a special effect for PJ to pass up, I just hope he dosen't overdue it.

Scouring my dear:p like when you have to wash the dishes.
And yes, Scouring is definitely out of the movie but Paths of the Dead is in (Hooray!). I wonder if Aragorn will turn up in the Ships or he'll drag the dead all the way to Pelennor. The Dead help him get the ships in the book then are set free if my recollection is clear. With PJ on the case I can see Mr Arathorn riding into the Fields on a wave of the Dead. I always thought that was going to happen in the book. I think Strider let them off lightly!

Imagine the outcry in these very pages!

Nope, no scouring of the Shire in RoTK *cries*, but at least there'll be the paths of the dead. I hope they show Gimli, all scared and clingy. That's one of my fave parts. The whole chapter scared the bejesus out of me when I was reading it, though. I wouldn't want anything dead following me. Ever. Ever ever ever.

Actually, he didn't. The only reason the "good guys" didn't jump off the boats when the dead came was that they were chained to the oars. No one could stand against the dead, even on "our side". Aragorn could, but those with him (aside from Legolas) were only held firm by his presence. If the dead had come to the Pelannor, nobody would have stuck around except the Nazgul, Gandalf and any loose elf.

P.S. I wonder if Jackson or his offspring are going to show up in cameo parts in this thread..... hmmm............

Are you following me, Mrs Maggott!;)

No, I meant he let the dead off lightly. After they'd lived for thousands of years under the curse I thought they should have done more for their release.

A horror director like PJ won't be able to resist utilizing them to the full. Imagine the spectacle. The Dawn of the Dead on the Fields of Pelennor. That's a flexing of artistic muscle I could live with.

Well I guess PJ new that he would have to take that part out if he did not have Sam get the box in FOTR. Oh well. Isn't that the part where Wormtongue slits Saruman's throat? If it is then where is that part gonna happen.

That's what I was wondering too. I knew they wouldn't have the Scouring of the Shire, but the part with Saruman Grima and Frodo is one of my favorites. I love how Frodo lets Saruman live after he tries to stab him, and Saruman says "You have grown, halfling....." I love that part. I like how Saruman is killed by his own servant, in the end. Even without the Scouring, I hope PJ finds a place to include this.

How can they leave the Scouring of the Shire out. Surely it's one of the most important parts of the story, or the book atleast.

Well, there are rules that they teach film makers and authors, and anti-climaxes are sort of against the rules, especially for films.

The rules are also called formulas.

A film that drags but draws the audience in at the end is more likely to have people walking out pleased then one that is fine for most of the film, then drags at the end.

So ... Jackson has gone with the rules just as he did with the first film, where rather than subtracting he added a climactic but not especially unusual duel.

Tolkien didn't go with such rules and formulas so much. He wrote what seemed good to him, not expecting to really make much money from it.
