This is for discussing essay topics that will not use HoMe as a source.

I'll open with a few suggestions:

1. The History of the Rings of Power

2. [Elendil3119 has choosen to do this topic] Bilbo Baggins Biography

3. Descendants of Melian

4. The destruction of the One Ring and events leading up to it, and people involved.

5. [See Inderjit's post below] The sundering of the elves, and the history of the major movements of the kindreds and groups (without population estimates).

6. The role of Ulmo in the first age.

7. [See Inderjit's post below] The movements and major events concerning the princes of the Noldor.

8. Evil of Morgoth turned to good. Give examples of good that came of Morgoth or indirectly of him through Sauron and other evil beings.

Topic suggestions and comments on the topics I have listed are welcomed.

Those topics are up for grabs, anyone interested can take one. If you have questions about where to find information, or what to include in your essay you can post it here, and someone will offer suggestions.

I would be interested in writing a bio of Bilbo Baggins over spring break. However, I'm not sure what to include. Would I need to include a summary of his journey with the dwarves to the Lonely Mountain? Also, does anybody know of any books (besides the Hobbit and LotR) in which I could find more info on Bilbo? Thanks. :)

Elendil, I apologize for not getting to this sooner.

I am pretty sure all vital information can be found with in The Hobbit and The Lord of the rings. There may be some extra information elsewhere, but I do not know of it. Maybe someone else does?

As for Bilbo's adventure with the dwarves: I think a synopsis should be included, but it is completely your call as to how much detail you want to go into.

There is some information about him in The Unfinished Tales close to the end it talks about Gandalf and him choosing Bilbo, a very small amount of info although info is info.

Nom, 5 and 7 will be no where near as good without HoME. You will not find out much 'new' information without it, as the movements of elves + the Finweans is pretty scarce in the Published Silmarillion, and there is little in LoTR, since their history's weren't as developed as they were, as shown by the 'primitive' Quenta's of HoME 4 and 5.

But the other SHOULD work fairly/very well.

Thanks for your input.

I agree that I wont find anything new in the The Silmarillion, but I think it is a good topic all the same.

Granted some of us could write such essays based on The Silmarillion without even looking at the book, but I thought this woud be a good topic for those first reading the book, since I have seen a lot of confusion around here as to the different groups of elves. Some people may rather just enjoy The Silmarillion and nevermind HoMe for the time being.

I will go ahead and leave the topics up there for now, since I am not convinced that they are bad ones. With your post and mine people will know that there is an opinion that the topics are not good, so they can consider that, or ask you a question if they'd like.

I'm trying to give topics that require all different levels of reseach and knowledge, so that all of our members can find something that they feel is right for them.
