Eliot
04-02-2003, 06:44 AM
American football is my favorite, baseball is my second favorite, though, it can be boring sometimes. Always depends on who's playing, I guess. I don't really like all that much more, basketball is OK.
Favourites: Cricket, Aussie Rules Footy, Field Hockey, Soccer
I like most sports....But there is one that I absolutely despise- Grid Iron *shudder*
The_Swordmaster
04-02-2003, 08:53 PM
My Favorite is American Football and my second favorite is Lacrosse.
Pippin sorry I meant Aule what do you mean by Grid Iron. Is that some Aussie sport?
It's that wussy American sport where a bunch of fairy blokes run around with about 40 kilograms of padding.
The_Swordmaster
04-03-2003, 09:24 PM
I would like you to play american football. Then we will see how the fairy blokes hit.
Elendil3119
04-03-2003, 10:41 PM
Yeah, that's it! Lets teach the little Cricket how to play a REAL sport. J/K:p My favorite sports are American football, ice hockey, cycling, hunting, and fishing. :D
Nefmariel

I've only been fishing once in my life, and I guess Football is ok.

It has been proven that Rugby and Aussie Rules Footy are much more violent games than Grid Iron. And anyway, in Grid Iron, they spend most of the time standing around doing nothing.....
If they just got rid of that aweful padding, it would be a much better sport though. In my opinion, they only have the padding because it protects them from all the other player's padding! :)

I love sports! I'd love to join this guild, if that's okay with you. I like basketball(my ultimate favorite), baseball, American football, tennis, and hockey. I also love tae kwon do, but I don't know if you'd really consider that a sport...
Anyway, I really want to join so I hope you'll be okay with that.
Elendil3119
04-04-2003, 06:28 PM
Aulė, why would you want to get rid of all the padding? That would just make it hurt more. :p
Carantalath, you're welcome to join! :)

I have never really like basketball alot. Does any one else agree with this. How do people watch a whole baseball game on t.v. it's so boring?
Nefmariel
04-05-2003, 08:27 PM
No its not! atleast not if the Lakers are winning! Plus I don't watch it alot its funner to play.
Elendil3119
04-05-2003, 08:49 PM
I don't normally like watching pro basketball, but college is always fun. There seems to be a lot more team-work than there is in pro. March Madness is one of my favorite times of the year. :D About baseball: I can't stand watching baseball, but I think that its much more fun to play.

I also like volleyball, american football, rugby, and basketball. the only one of those i like to watch tho is american football. i suck at all of them. except riding. i kick butt at riding. Boring sports:golf, track (god, how can u run FOR FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!) baseball (unless my bro's playing. i went to a rangers/astros game and fell asleep.) I have vowed to never play school sports again. evil coaches. grrrrrr. i perfer to play rugby over football tho because in rugby there's like, 2 rules. lol.

Because They aren't. Okay they are a great, great team but certainly not World's best ever. Oh and i wanted to use the words best ever but couldn't refrain from some cheek. :(
What would you consider to be the best team ever, then?
The West Indies team of the 80's (Richards & co.)?
The Australian team of the 40's (Bradman & co.)?
The English team of the 1890's (Grace & co.)?
I'd rate the Aussies of the 40's as the best, and the Aussies of now, and the West Indies of the 80's as a tied second.
Beleg
04-06-2003, 07:25 PM
No I would have it like this.
1. The BradMan team of 1948. (Australia.)
2. The Armstrong team of 1920's (Australia.)
3. The South African team of late 1960's (Consider people like Graham Pollock, Petter Pollock, Berry Richards, Eddy Barlow etc, Individually very strong)
4. The WI team under the captainship of Clive Lyod.
To me the best would be the West indian team of 1980's.
Australian's of now, sadly are lacking in the bowling department. i can assure you that your bowling will take serious tap if it comes to pitches like the Sub Continent. Fire power is only provided by Bret Lee and since Shane Warne is gone, spin department is lacking.
Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee, Shane Warne, Jason Gillespie, Andy Bichel
How could you not call that a superstar bowling attack?
The Australian bowling lineup rarely has a score of above 300 hit against them in tests, and seldom in ODIs. McGrath is the #1 bowler in the world at the moment, and is extremely miserly in conceding runs. Brett Lee is the best speed bowler in the world. Now I know that you may place Shoaib ahead of him, but Lee has much better control, and has a lethal inswinger. Shoaib has more pace, but less control. And Bichel's performance in teh World Cup speaks for itself.
I'd admit that we are lacking in the spin department now that Warne is missing, but Hogg and McGill aren't mugs with the ball.

Welcome to the guild Lossengondiel! Running is one thing, but cycling is another. Cycling, IMO, is more efficient for conditioning the lower body. However, running really works the whole body, as I know from experience. I never really got into running, simply because it was just too painfull, and too hard on my knees. :( In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a runner smile while running. ;) :p

Thanks for the welcome.
Running/cross country is not the only sport that I'm into. I bike in gym class, and I love to skate (rollerblading and ice skating) I am always one of the biggest participaters in my gym class, and we do a variety of excercises; I'm about to start cardiovascular games. I pretty much like to play anything :)

Please don't say track with out the and field part! I am the best at the javelin. I am 13, and can throw it over 100 feet!:D I win or come in the top 3 in javelin lots of times, even with kids 2 years older than me in my age group! Don't worry, I do running, but not short distance. I can't do that for beans, but I am really good at long distance, like 1500m and 3000m. I hope I don't sound like I'm bragging or anything...

Anamatar why in the world are you a Braves fan?! You live in Connecticut with me!!! You should be supporting either the Red Sox or the Yankees (prefferably the Red Sox because the Yankees SUCK), but no one else, I'm charging you with treason to the state!!! (btw for anyone confused by this I would like to inform you that CT is actually divided into 2 states, one half that supports the Red Sox and one half that supports the Yankees, the rest are wierdos that like the Mets).
Anyway, I would like to join this guild. I'm a tennis player and a cyclist, usually Mountain Biking which kicks rear end (lol I don't wanna say the other word cause I'll get in trouble). But aside from those 2 sports I enjoy soccer, baseball, American football, and volleyball (which I like to play but hate to watch, it's sooo boring to watch, my girlfriend makes me go to her games, somebody please convince her not to make me go!!!!!!):( Anyway, wow I just said a lot, but I hope I'm in!!:)

Anamatar IV
04-07-2003, 01:31 AM

There seem to be a few more baseball fans here than I thought! FoaT, maybe we could introduce these people to your TTF fantasy baseball league that I would show them but I forgot the password to?:(

I guess I could be the Yankees lover of the guild, since I'm all alone there. Anyone else like the Yankees?

Carantalath I'm afraid that, since you are a Yankees fan, I am going to have to ask you to leave the Guild of Elves. lol jk I'll allow it, but only because you were one of the first (the second to be exact) to join me and get my guild started.:D
Elendil3119
04-07-2003, 01:53 AM
This is the contest for the position of official Yankee-hater of this Guild!:D
The idea is that you have to come up with the most insults for the team itself or Yankee players.
Rules:
1. No insults may violate forum rules and etiquette (duh! ;) )
2. No insult may be used twice
3. Contestants are limited to 3 posts (max) each
This contest will run from now until Monday 9:00 PM. Insult away! :D
Thanks to Glorfindel1187 for the idea!
Maeglin
04-07-2003, 02:05 AM
Okay, here goes.....
1. Derek Jeter has no....I'll let you finish that one! (hint: it sorta rhymes with Jeter)
2. Here's the classic one that I'm sure you've all heard, "New York Yankees? Its more like New York Stankees!"
3. Roger Clemens SUCKS!!!! (That one is so original, I know)
4. This is basically just an insulting observation to the franchise, but have you noticed that a large amount of big stars the Yankees have ever had have been under the influence of some kind of substance? Babe Ruth was a big fat dumb drunk. Mickey Mantle, also a drunk. David Wells, also a drunk. Darryl Strawberry, you name it he did it: crack, marijuana, a drunk, the list just keeps going. And I don't know what the hell Steinbrenner's on but he's gotta be smoking something because he gets ticked off and fires people like its a bodily function.
Okay thats all I got for now, check back later for some more. Oh and Elendil3119 always check on the posts of the contestants to see if they've edited their posts because it probably means that they just edited their list of insults without you knowing so it should count as another post if they edit.;)

Support Manchester City then
I prefer them over Man. United:D
Beleg
04-07-2003, 07:45 PM
The team Micheal Oven plays for. Probably Liverpool, Arsenal is also nice because they can kick some Manchaster United .....
Humm, I would consider Shoaib and Bret lee to be equal or Shoaib to have a slight advantage. Bret has played most of his cricket on live bouncy pitches and excel on them while shoaib has spent much of his time on Dead surfaces of Sharjah, Pakistan, SriLanka and has proved that he is a force to be reckoned with at there.
He took 5 wickets against SriLanka on a pitch about which Dennis Lily had said that "I would like this to be my graveyard." He took 6/17 against NewZealand in Karachi, 6/11 against them In Lahore, 5/24 against WestIndies IN Sharjah in 42*c, And 5/20 odd against Australia in Colombo PSS. He has shown that he excels in Dead Tracks while Bret Lee still has a lot to learn when it comes to bowling on dead pitches. His performance at the English Tour of 2001 was poor compared to his fellow Bowlers.
As for *****el, *****el is a Nice enough Bowler but he certainly is not in the same class of Gelespie or McGrath. He will go for runs on dead tracks for he basically is a length bowler and on pitches that aren't assisting fast bowlers or don't have much bounce he will produce balls in exactly the right area's for the batsmen to hit.
As for McGrath. There is no other bolwer better then him in the earlier stages of the match. He is the master of bowling with the new ball and can glean whatever is found in the pitch in the first 20 or so overs. But have you ever noticed that he is not a depth bowler. He is basically a length bowler with a immpeciable line or length to which it is very difficult to play senile Cricketing shorts, however in the last overs people are going for the kill and don't care for what type of shorts they are playing, so he always gets a lot of tap in the last few overs. And once someone upsets his rhythm he can't regain it. Sachin Tendulkar has done it on numerous occasions. Gellispie is a nice bowler, can bowl on most surfaces and to me is the best bowler in the Australian side due to his variations, (The bowl in the worldcup on which he got Tendulkar was a beauty.) But all in all, against an Impecable Batting Side on their home territory, (Like India) Australia will suffer and would not be able to bowl out the other side IMO.
And is no one interested in Rowing? :( That's sad.
So Aule who do you think will Win the Quarter Final of the Uefa cup (something like this) played between Manchaster United and Real Madrid? i hope its RM.
P.S: Any Louis Fego fan's here?

Who here likes baseball? As I said in one of my earlier posts, I can't really stand watching it (unless of course it's between two really good teams, and it's suspenseful), but it's always fun playing it even if you lose. :) My favorite team in the MLB is the Chicago Cubs. Here are the current standings in the NL Central:
W L PCT. GB
Pittsburgh _ 5 1 .833 -
Houston _ 4 1 .800 0.5
St. Louis _ 3 2 .600 1.5
Chicago _ 3 3 .500 2.0
Cincinnati _ 2 4 .333 3.0
Milwaukee _ 0 6 .000 5.0
Even though the Cubs aren't that great, I still like them. It's sorta a family tradition.

Even though the Cubs aren't that great,
Well, they have great young pitching in Kerry Wood, Mark Prior and Matt Clement, and a promising rookie at first base in Hee Sop Choi, but other than that I'm not particularily impressed by the Cubbies this season. I've never been taken with Sosa, who I consider to be a stat-obsessed primadonna. Alou seems to be on the downhill portion of his career. Eric Karros just never materialized into the great player that he was said to have the potential to be. Damian Miller is a pretty good catcher, and probably the best guy that the Cubs could have gotten for the position, in terms of helping out the relatively inexperienced pitching, but offensively he isn't anything special.
The N.L. Central is, in my view, a two team race between the Astros and the Cardinals, and I think that the Cards have to be viewed as the distinct favorite.

Speaking of the NL why does the beginning of the Braves years get worse and worse every year? Not that I'm worried...each year our end record gets better and better too!:D
But yeah NL central...I would like to see one of the underdog teams be in the race this year. I'm bored of seeing Cards in first Astros in the Wild card.

Hey you People I think that Glorfindel is winning. Although he is the only one who has come up with incultes. Here are the incultes and by who:
Glorfindel
Ok I hope that next time I look that there are some more!
So here is who is winning the contest:
Glorfindel: 4

Beleg
04-17-2003, 09:25 PM
Excuse me, but grass and Austroturph are not similar. Austroturph is a synthetic carpet, on which the ball travels with lightening speed while Grass is natural grass where it needs skill to even get the ball rolling. Austroturph is the bane for us Asian players :(
'Astroturf' not 'Austroturf'....
And astroturf is the best surface to play on in my opinion. When you play hockey on grass, the ball bounces all over the place, and a lot of lifting occurs. On astroturf, that problem doesn't arise. Plus you can 'accidentely' spray water into opposition's faces during the game. ;)

Okay, two follow-up notes about the Sosa beaning:
1. Sosa, whose home run totals are inflated by playing in the homer-friendly, short-outfield-walls parks of the NL Central, is fine.
2. Everyone's favorire (suspected) steriod abusing Cub has put his damaged batting helmet on display in his home.

Grr! By like 15 seconds! I'll get this one! He should be asleep by now!
OK,
This sport involves 4 quarters,
But it also has 2 halves,
It involves 22 players,
And you aren't allowed to use your feet!
(Sorry- 'halves' and 'quarters' aren't very good rhyming words....) :p

In case Swordmaster got it wrong, is it American football? (I know I know they use their feet for the kickers, but no one else)
No and No.
(btw, I just remembered that one player on each team can use their feet...Sorry)

I'd just like to announce that the Montreal/Puerto Rico/soon to be the Washington Senators/Expos have no business doing this well, and that they should learn their role, and drop to third place in the NL East.
That is all.

And that the Yankees need to stop having there best start ever and let the Red Sox take over first place. You know, I don't know if they can bear having such a hard task!;) Hey, maybe the Yankees will have the same thing happen to them ask the Red Sox have had every year. They get off to a good start, and by late July, they slump 'till the end of the year and don't make the playoffs! That could work for me!

That would be nice, but I've got a bad feeling that the odds of that happening are about as good as seeing a Chicago/Chicago World Series. I mean, the damn Yankees are doing this well without Jeter or Rivera. Plus, they're the Yankees. (begins muttering about how Steinbrenner is quite possibly Satan) ;)
