I've decided to go with the flow and post this in our guild as well, to raise awareness to any members that have not heard of this yet.

Anyone who is interested in participating in the forthcoming inter-guild debate tournament, please state so.

There will be 10 debates altogether but no one is expected to participate in all 10 debates.

Come forth then Scholars, and defend your guild.;)

Inderjit S

I'd like to vollunteer, if you want me to defend the reputation of the Scholars.

You have my sword!

You have my pants...oohh
I wonder what Mrs. Ancalagon would think of your offering Anc.;)

Now seriously, I'm glad to see the volunteers from the Guild. I have volunteered to review the topics of the debates, so I will only be able to participate in 2 of them.

Elfarmari

I would like to participate!

Ithrynluin
05-12-2003, 10:40 PM
Hear ye, hear ye, people of the Scholars!

The Debating Tournament is about to start and I need each of you to state which debates you can participate in, but more importantly, whether you can take part in the first one against the Periaur (May 18 - 24).

For more info check out this (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?postid=308653#post308653) post.

Thank you, and good luck!

Maedhros
05-12-2003, 11:10 PM
I will participate in the first debate. I want a shot at the Periaur.

Inderjit S
05-12-2003, 11:29 PM
Sadly, due to exams and such I cannot take part in the Periaur debate. Sorry, you'll do fine without me anyway.

Feanorian
05-13-2003, 12:24 AM
I am available for the Periaur debate.

Elendil3119
05-13-2003, 01:39 AM
Due to school and other commitments, I won't be able to participate in the first debate, and maybe not in the second. :(

BlackCaptain
05-13-2003, 01:43 AM
I want a shot at those outcasts. Haha. I'll take the 5th

Ithrynluin
05-13-2003, 02:14 AM
Well I think I'll participate as well, since we're lacking candidates as it is.

We still need one more though...

Nenya? baragund? jallan? Elfarmari? Anyone?

If not, I'll have to force someone to do it, and you wouldn't want to see ithrynluin in his wrath!:D

Elfarmari
05-13-2003, 02:34 AM
I would like to participate in any debates, the first one would work just fine with me.

edit: I am going to be gone for most of the month of June, so I will not be able to participate in rounds 2, 3, or 4.

Ithrynluin
05-13-2003, 02:39 AM
You would be more than welcome, Elfarmari.:)

So our team for the first debate consists of:

Maedhros
Feanorian
ithrynluin
Elfarmari

If anyone else would like to debate in this one, let me know and we'll see what can be done.

baragund
05-13-2003, 04:47 AM
I'll take Round 2. May is becoming a rather busy month for me.

Don't forget me, Inderjit. I volunteered for Round 2 yesterday.

Maedhros

I just wanted to mention that if you indeed volunteer to participate in a debate, please do so, it's not fair for your teammantes if you don't.

baragund
05-26-2003, 07:21 PM
How is the volunteer situation as far as helping judge debates among the other guilds? If more participation is needed, I would be happy to help. Who should I approach to ask about this?

Feanorian
05-26-2003, 08:18 PM
I just wanted to mention that if you indeed volunteer to participate in a debate, please do so, it's not fair for your teammantes if you don't.

I would like to apologize for my lack of participation, after my first two posts I did not really think I could do anything but hinder it:rolleyes: . It was pretty much a one on one debate with you and Snaga. If I am to participate in any other future debates I will do my best to keep up and post in them regularly.

Nenya Evenstar
05-27-2003, 02:32 AM
Hmm . . . so we're still missing one member for the second round, aren't we? I was going to see if someone could possibly take my place in the next debate because I wasn't thinking when I joined it. Not only is my brother graduating on the first of June, but my other brother is coming home shortly before that, I have a wedding, a wedding rehearsal, a wedding shower, a birthday party, and perhaps the beginnings of a job, all crammed into the first week of June. However, if I don't see two new people pounce into round two, I will keep my place to the best of my ability.

Ack, stupid Nenya. :p

The current team for Round Two is:

Nenya Evenstar
Inderjit S
baragund

Inderjit S
05-27-2003, 04:55 PM
before that, I have a wedding, a wedding rehearsal, a wedding shower, a birthday party, and perhaps the beginnings of a job, all crammed into the first week of June

Ah well...as long as you get blindly drunk it's o.k What the heck is a wedding shower? Will everyone whose going to the wedding jump into a giant shower and go wild? Or is it some boring tradition?

Nenya Evenstar
05-27-2003, 06:35 PM
Shower the bride with gifts . . . not water. :p I can guarantee you I won't get drunk.

:D

Inderjit S
05-27-2003, 07:47 PM
Shower the bride with gifts . . . not water.

Cool. :) so you actually throw the gits at her? What if someone has brought something sharp? ;) :p

I can guarantee you I won't get drunk.

Yeah-SURE. We know how much of a wild, unrestrainable party animal you are Nenya. I excpect a hangover.

Anyway, I think my post may need SOME point to it, so we do really need two or one more debator/s but if you want to wreck Nenya's plans (I hope not) then just one. Don't make me P.M y'all forcing you to debate. No really don't. I suffer from a acute form of laziness.

Nenya Evenstar
05-27-2003, 11:01 PM
*in a teeny weeny voice* You know, even if one person hopped in it would be the same as it is now . . . and I might not have to debate. :o

Elfarmari
05-27-2003, 11:24 PM
If no one else volunteers, I could probably participate, but I can't guarentee lots of posts. Next week I have exams, but they should not be too hard and prevent me from following the debate.

Nenya Evenstar
05-28-2003, 01:15 AM
*grins* If you could that would be great . . . I would owe you one! However, if it gets in the way of exams your exams I would be more than willing to do it. :)

Elfarmari
05-28-2003, 01:29 AM
It shouldn't be a problem, I just was figuring out what classes I actually have exams in, and I only have two (two are projects, one we're not having any exam, and my art exam is cleaning the art room), so I shouldn't have to study too much. I get my wisdom teeth removed the 6th, though, so I don't know if I'll be able to close the debate. . . I'll be lying down with ice tied to my cheeks. . . should be fun.

Nenya Evenstar
05-28-2003, 04:34 AM
I actually enjoyed getting my wisdom teeth removed . . . lots of movies and ice cream. :D

But anywho, I'm sure one of the other team members could close the debate. Thank you so much for doing this, Elfarmari! :) I appreciate it it so, so much.

So then, I'll sign up for Round Four. I can't do Round Three because I will be gone that entire time, but I will be here for Round Four. Whoopie! :o

Maedhros
05-28-2003, 03:56 PM
I will debate too.

Elfarmari
05-28-2003, 07:37 PM
I'm sorry I didn't help out too much in this last debate, Maedhros, I didn't seem to be helping our side much, and I ended up having to work all weekend. I am hoping that the next debate will relate to material other than Unifinished Tales, as my friend lost my copy.

Hey Inderjit, Nenya and Elfamari..

We're up for our round starting tomorrow. Do we know where the debate will be held? In our guild or somewhere else?

Also, I have a suggestion for how we carry out the debate. I think we'll present more cohesive arguments if we coordinate our posts via PM before putting them up on the debate thread. Whoever is going to post send a draft to the rest of us so we can review and make suggestions on strengthening the statement before it gets put up. I think a lot of our opponents "shoot from the hip" without coordinating with their teamates and wind up leaving a hole in their arguments that can be exploited.

This will slow down the pace of the debate but I don't think that would be a bad thing.

What do you think?

Scatha
05-31-2003, 09:13 PM
With your permission, I would like to host the debate against the OiE on this forum.

Is the debating team ready for tomorrow?

Maedhros
05-31-2003, 10:21 PM
I thought that I would be able to debate against OiE instead of Nenya but unfortunately I can't, so good luck.

Hi Guys...

Well, the judging of Round 2 is turning out to be quite close, but I thought we did a lot better. oh well (as Yay puts it).

How are we set for Round 3?

Elendil3119
06-12-2003, 01:50 AM
I thought you guys won the debate by far, but apparently some of the judges think otherwise...:(

I'll volunteer for Round 3 if nobody minds.

Nenya Evenstar
06-14-2003, 01:14 AM
Nenya's totally swamped, totally ready to tear her hair out, and quite unable to participate yet! :(

If I participate in the debate at this point in time, I will undoubtedly not even be able to think.

I'll be going for some later rounds, and hopefully I'll be calmed down by that time. If not, I'll explode my brains and participate anyway.

Inderjit S
06-14-2003, 01:02 PM
Nenya are you SURE you're not on drugs? ;)
Eh, i'll particpate but I wont be able to take part much, since I'm too busy doing stuff, but I hope to do better then last time, but I'll only be the 4th member of no one else participates.

Elendil3119
06-14-2003, 06:07 PM
Ok, so here's the tentative team unless someone else volunteers today:

Elendil3119
Maedhros
Inderjit S

We're gonna have some hard opposition this round!

Maedhros
06-14-2003, 06:22 PM
I think that you can add Idril to the list too.:)

Elendil3119
06-14-2003, 06:34 PM
Alright, so she'll be taking the place of Inder? Then we've got:

baragund
Elendil3119
Maedhros
Idril

And it looks like we're up against:
Lhun
Gate7ole
FOAT
Beleg

Idril
06-14-2003, 06:45 PM
:(,..... ok, baragund, I'll be your 4th debater - that is unless Inderjit's so desperately wants to do it;)

Be warned, I've not debated before and Maedhros is at this moment 'sweeting talking' me into doing it;).

* sigh* I can't think how he did it?

baragund
06-15-2003, 04:33 AM
Thanks, Idril. We'll have fun, and hopefully, we'll learn something in the process.:)

Be warned fellow scholars, I'm sick! I spent last night with a bad sore throat and I vomited a few times:(:(. My hubby's been down with a nasty cold and chest infection and he's given it to me:( - that's love I guess, sharing everything including germs!

oh well, I shall still give it a go and try my best:)

Idril
06-15-2003, 12:14 PM
OKay folks, we have a slight problem:(. Aule has just advised me that as a neutral judge and keeper of the votes for the bestest & fairest debators - I can't participate in the debates!:(:(.

Inderjit S
06-15-2003, 01:59 PM

I'm terribly sorry, but I have to remove myself from the tournament... I have way too many things to do (Baseball, Cross Country, Cadying, Newly found social life:D ) to be participating in anything that requires looking up things from HoMe books, and giving alot and alot of thought to. I also have to do summer reading, which shouldn't take too much time, but it still has to be done. If this creates any big emptiness in the team for the July 19-? debate I'm terribly sorry... If it does let me know and I'll see if I have any free time.

Nenya Evenstar
06-25-2003, 06:31 AM
Events Coordinator . . . I do need one. I think I'm losing my head. ;)

Hmm . . . I don't know how people are going to take this, but I think I'm going to have to say it anyway.

I'm not sure that I'm going to be able to participate in the debating tournament at all. It turns out that my life is taking a major turn, and I am finding very little time to participate online. *sigh* And that means that anything that I *have* to do online is suffering majorly.

That means that I must withdraw myself from the debating tournament. I'm terribly sorry guys. :(

I still hold to my claim that I'll be posting more about Tolkien . . . only I can't have any obligations to do it, because I may not be able to fulfill my obligations.

I know, it's sick, and I'm terribly sorry. :( But I do have a real life (and a job too :D) . . . and that can't suffer!

Inderjit S
06-25-2003, 09:28 AM

I completely understand! Your real life absolutely has to have 1st priority. I'm beginning to wonder myself if I've bitten off more than I can chew between the debates and the Chronicles over in the RPG site:(

BlackCaptain
06-25-2003, 05:25 PM
I got into all that stuff over at MERPS too... Heren Istarion, lost of RPs, Chronicles... I think I just did it to tell myself that it was possible... I'm just not an RPer...

Elendil3119
06-25-2003, 06:12 PM
Nenya, I'm sorry to hear that, but I understand completely. I'll probably be facing the same situation next year. :( Anyways, I wish you good look with your new-found life! :D

Still need 3 more volunteers...

Feanorian
06-25-2003, 08:40 PM

Indy, I actually have book club today

O.K-Just don't go too wild.

I'd also like to take part in the GoE/D debate.

Maedhros
06-26-2003, 08:35 PM
Are there any more volunteers. I would participate if a fourth one is not found.

baragund
06-27-2003, 10:56 PM
I can fill in if we are short.

Any luck in trying to get more participation from some of the other members of the guild beyond what seems to be the core half dozen or so members who do most of the posting?

Elendil3119
06-29-2003, 04:59 AM
Frodo Baggins has volunteered to participate in the debate, so he'll take the 4th spot if nobody minds. :)

Elendil3119
06-29-2003, 11:21 PM
So if there are no objections, our team is:

Elendil3119
Feanorian
Frodo Baggins
Inderjit S

I wonder when the judging for Round 3 will finally start...

Maedhros
06-29-2003, 11:29 PM
Good, I hope that now that I'm not on the team, we will win the debate. It may turn out that i'm the one with bad luck!

Frodo Baggins

If such a grade A debator like yourself is bad luck I hate to think what I am.... I think this is our opurtunity to pull one out. Talking privately and making sure all of our posts correspond is crucial.

Good luck everyone lets work hard on this one and pull it out for our guild.

If I may intrude in these hallowed Halls...

Which of the illustrious Scholars will host the upcoming debate between Ost-in-Edhil and the Tolkienologists? Will he wait until the Judging is over to begin the debate of Round 4?

I'm getting fidgety...

I will host the debate then. And no I will not wait for the judging to be over.

As for round 4 of the debate, should we not be able to find more paticipation, can we perhaps run a debate of 2 vs 2?

If this is to happen which of us shall debate??

If anyone has their hearts set on debating I'll be willing to sit this one out, not saying I dont want to debate though:rolleyes:

Feanorian

Maedhros, who is you're 'stand-in' as Topic Controller?
Since you seem to be debating in this Round, Omnipotent_elf will need to know who to get his topic checked by.

Maedhros
07-20-2003, 03:45 PM
Well, the persons that I would like to check that topic would be in the following order:
Gothmog, Ancalagon, Arverdui or Eriol.
I'm ok with any one of them.

I volunteer. I was on vacation for a week, so sorry if I seemed to have fallen off the face of the earth.

Fantastic. I will let The GoO and Nom know that she can debate again. She dropped out when we only had 3 people.

Great job on Round 5, guys. Very impressive that you argued so well against Nom and company on a Silmarillion topic with the judging going to the last vote. That's kind of like defeating the league champion in (insert your favorite sport here) on their home field.

Who's up for Round 6? I'd like to take a swing at it if I may.

Hi Guys...

I had no idea it would take so long to get our Round 6 debate with GoP off the ground, but unless it is delayed all the way to next week, I'm going to have to sit out. I will be out of town from Thursday until Sunday night (going to wild, wonderful West Virginia for some R&R).

If the debate starts while I'm gone, you will need someone to fill in for me.

I am also busy next week, I will be at my cousins house from Wednesday to Sunday and will prolly be out in the day on Monday and Tuesday too.

Maedhros already knows this but I will be busy with football starting this Saturday running up til about September 1st......I wont be out of town just not as capable to participate as much as I would like. Not to say that our guildmaster isnt capable of winning by himself but maybe we should find some more volunteers?

Maedhros
08-15-2003, 03:45 PM
Any volunteers?

Feanorian
08-15-2003, 10:08 PM
I will definitly still participate, I just cant bear the brunt of it (which I probably couldnt do anyway;) ), unless you prefer it otherwise Maedhros.

I'm quite sure that Maedhros wants a rest from his heavy workload.
How about releasing 4 of your newbies on us? ;)

*Looks hopeful*

Maedhros

Well, if there are no volunteers, then the team will be me and Feanorian with two ghosts.

I'm back and I can participate in Round 6 now. Should we try to get a 4th or just go ahead?

I can participate; I can't promise to be on more than once a day, but I will try my hardest to help out.

Hi Guys...

I'm really sorry I disappeared during the last debate. Work has been kind of hairy and there were family issues that needed attention.:(

This pattern will continue at least through the end of the month but I would still like to contribute as much as I can.

No problem baragund.

Hey Scholars, just a reminder in case you folks forgot or are unaware that you are due to provide a Host for the round 7 debate between GoE/D and GoO that should be starting as soon as possible. GoO has a team of three ready and will probably not find a fourth, I don't know about GoE/D though.

baragund
09-08-2003, 02:54 PM
Anybody mind if I host again? There were a few small snafus in Round 6, but I think I actually know what I'm doing now:) .

Maedhros
09-08-2003, 04:57 PM
That sounds good to me, unless there is someone else who wants to do it.

baragund
09-10-2003, 06:14 PM
Since there aren't any howls of protest from the others, I'll go ahead and get the show on the road for the Round 7 debate between GoO and GoE/D. Maedhros, I'll send you a PM on a proposed topic.

Who's up for Round 7? I'd like to take another crack at it. I'll try not to disappear this time:o

Greetings and salutations, Scholars. Sorry to barge in, but there's a small snag in the debate tournament, and I was hoping that one of you kind, erudite folks could help. :D

To the point, somehow, Bethelarien never got around to finding a representative from the Scholars Guild to judge for the Round 7 Debate between the Periaur and the Tolkienologists. I was hoping that someone could volunteer to fill this role- it would really help us out.

Thanks.

baragund
09-25-2003, 02:50 PM
I'll take care of it. Beth bailed me out during Round 6 and I would be happy to return the favor.

Besides, Maedhros and Inder are busy crafting our devastatingly brilliant opening post against O-in-E.:D

You too, Maedhros! I really enjoyed that debate. It was a good topic, and everybody kept the tone friendly and easygoing.

We may have been hurt by not posting closing remarks. I had a closing statement prepared but I missed the cutoff by about a half hour:( . In the immortal words of YayGollum, oh well.

Looking ahead, we are hosting Round 9 between the Periaur and the Outcasts. Anybody interesting in hosting that debate? In the two or three debates I hosted, I did EVERYTHING possible wrong at one time or another so I can give lots of good pointers on what NOT to do!:p

Also, who's up for Round 9 against the Eruhini (Elves and Dwarves)?

Aulė
10-21-2003, 10:53 AM
Could the Scholars please put forward a host for the Round 9 debate between the Outcasts and the Periaur?
Once they have been chosen, could they please start their debate thread as soon as possible.

baragund
10-21-2003, 04:39 PM
Wellll, nobody seems to be breaking down the doors clamoring for the privilege to host.

Actually, guys, hosting is pretty enjoyable! It's fun coming up with a brain-teaser topic that will get make the debator's heads explode. Also, GoP and GoO have some outstanding debators so you can really have fun testing their limits.

I'll wait until tomorrow morning (EST in the U.S.). If nobody expresses interest, I'll go ahead and set up the debate thread.

Elfarmari
10-21-2003, 10:48 PM
I've never done it before, but I think it would be interesting. If someone could tell me what all I need to do, I would be more than willing to be the host!

The details are in the 'Scoreboard' thread in the Tournament Forum, but the basics are:

- Start a thread in the 'Debates' sub-forum.
- Ask for the two Guilds to post their teams.
- Once that is done, post your topic.
- Moniter the debate, to make sure people don't start a ruckus. ;)
- Select 4 judges. (In your case: 1 from GoE, 1 from GoT, 1 from OiE, and 1 member who isn't in any of the debating Guilds)
- Close the debate 7 days after the opening post.
- Start a judging thread (with the names of the judges, including yourself as the 5th judge).
- Judge the debate.
- PM Idril with your 'Best & Fairest' votes (3 votes for the best debator, 2 for the second best, 1 for the third best).

I would like to apologize for my lack of participation in the last debate, I've been having headache problems, but hopefully those are over now.

Anyway, I would like to help out in the last debate!
