View Full Version : Abuse To The Elves!

I have belonged to many Tolkien Forums and this is the forst one that I did not see A.T.E. *Abuse to Elves*
This usually envoles Legolas. People say 'I love LEgolas, he's SO cute!' I HATE THAT!!! GRRR! No, you do NOT think Legolas is cute, you think ORLANDO BLOOM is. Yes, Orlando Bloom is really really cute. But not Legolas. Well, he could be, we do not know! We do not even know his hair color. Tolkien did not need Beauty in his characters,it's the Characters themself, not the Actor!
Some poeple seem to forget that the Movie was based on the books, not the other way around.
What is your point of view??
Anne
Well, I agree with you about female Orlando Bloom fans who are supposedly "Lord Of The Rings" fans, but you probably shouldn't have posted this without Glorfindel1187's (the guild leader) or any of the Calaquendi's (guild deputies) permission. Don't worry about it this time, just please ask next time. Thank you for your cooperation.
Anyway, I don't really understand why there would be a Guild against Elves...Sure some people prefer Hobbits or Dwarves or Ents or whatever over Elves, but to form a Guild against Elves?!? Sounds kind of odd to me...

Well I disagree, see I had a crush on Legolas before the movie ever even came out then when it did all I did was picture legolas in the book looking just like legolas in the movie, and I didn't even know about Orlando Bloom befor the movie and I like to think Orlando Bloom and Legolas are to different people.
Thank you goodbye!

Next time please let me or one of the other ruling members know before posting a new thread, but I don't mind this time, cause I like this idea.;)
Anyway, my point of view, to be blunt, is this: I can't stand all the girls that go around talking about how hot Orlando Bloom is, half of them wouldn't know who he is if he wasn't in one of there teen magazines or whatever they are. And the other half it just really ticks me off because they say that he's hot and they haven't read the book and just assume that he's supposed to be like the hero or something all because they think he is hot, honestly I swear that is what they all think. And what annoys me even more is when they say LEGOLAS is hot, I hate it when they forget to say Orlando Bloom, and I yell at them when they do forget.
Another thing, not necessarily concerning Legolas' character but the movie and community as a whole is that it has given many people a false interest in Tolkien. There are people that will say something like "Oh yeah I love Tolkien, I love the Lord of the Rings movies," when in reality they had not heard the name before the movies, and also they do not have any love for Tolkien's works, but rather they enjoy Peter Jackson's works which greatly distort the actual story. It sort of angers me that people have read the Lord of the Rings books based purely on their liking for the movies, and they don't have a real passion for the excellent works of Tolkien, and perhaps have no interest in literature at all. This can also be seen as a good thing I know, it has given our favorite author more attention and interest, but it's a little late for that now that he has died. And yes this may help his legacy and that is where I am grateful for the works of Peter Jackson, but overall and on the whole I do not like what he has done. Now, don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the movies, but it is just the way in which people were brought to Tolkien through the movies that bothers me, I feel that it would be better for people to discover Tolkien on their own, in that way I think that it really gives the whole experience of Tolkien a lot more meaning.
Okay I'm done with my soliloquy for now, sorry for such a long post.;)
Ledreanne313
04-07-2003, 11:26 PM
Same with me. I love legolas, but not for looks! I loved him before the movie. It is fine to love his character, just not by looks, Tolkien never discribed him, and never drew him, so we have no idea if he's cute!
**Sorry about not asking, I had no idea I had to!***
Well, I try to jump to the conclusion that someone does not know or appreciate the books just because they like Legolas in the movie.
I also understand that some may have had a "thing" for him before the movie even came out. I like Gildor for example, and imagine I would be very annoyed if he were in the movie and then suddenly a million girls liked him because of that.
And what annoys me even more is when they say LEGOLAS is hot, I hate it when they forget to say Orlando Bloom, and I yell at them when they do forget.
I suppose some of them might mean Legolas, and not Orlando Bloom. I have said (though not at the forum) that a couple of the elves in the Silmarillion are hot (No, not Finrod).
So there is always the change that a Legolas lover truely does like Legolas, and not just Jackson's Legolas. I think a person deserves the benefit of the doubt.

04-07-2003, 11:41 PM
Well I was referring for the most part to my friends. Like this one girl who is like a sister to me always says that Legolas is hot, but I know for a fact that she has never read the books, so therefore I do not think she could have had a thing for him before the movie.
It sort of angers me that people have read the Lord of the Rings books based purely on their liking for the movies
Well it depends...some people will read the books and say they are boring but love the movies, in which case they should be drug out into the street and shot...;) But the movies are actually what got me interested in the books. I like to read, but had never really considered LotR so the movies did indeed have some good. My line of thinking was not really, "I hope the book follows the movie!" But more of "If the books are as good as the movie, that must mean they are just plain awesome!" I loved the movie FotR, I thought it at least followed the story fairly well without throwing a bunch of stuff in. They took out stuff, but they didn't add a bunch of ****, like Faramir's character change and Frodo's little trip to Osgiliath. So, that's how I discovered Lord Of The Rings. I definitely see your point Glorf, in saying that people base their liking of the books on the movies.

Yes, I love the movies as well as the books, although I may have made it sound differently in my previous post.

When reading LOTR I thought legolas was an awesome character, my favorite by far... He had a strength to his words and such, but in the movies he's not portrayed even close to the way Tolkien wrote him.
Legolas in the movies (orlando) has not even 1/2934756 of the lines that Legolas had, nor does he do much for the movie. He is a good looking guy yea, but he doesn't seem to have much talent.. There had to be a reason all his lines got cut..
Also i'm afraid that casting a "hot" guy in the movie, is going to attract the people who don't even know that LOTR was a novel to begin with .. It will bring up the type of people will scream every time Legolas is on the camera.. And i've already had to sit through that...
I think that orlando is a ditz anyways... I have some arguments to support that, but since i don't know him it's just all speculations lol...

04-18-2003, 05:22 AM
ok, yes I think orlando bloom is hot. I think elijah wood is hot. I have never seen, nor will ever see legolas, so I cannot argue that point. It annoys me when people bash the movie, but whenever I have heard people say 'legolas is hot' its because they aren't obsessed with the books and movie and they have never heard of orlando bloom. They can't know every actor and actress in that movie (although I do :) ) so maybe you should cut them some slack? And if the movies hadn't come out, I never would have found lotr. it has become my life. i took up archery and calligraphy because of it. I adore classical music now. I have a great appreciation for other epics (ex. homer's Iliad) and it has really made an impact on my life. i don't mean to sound rude, but sometimes you "charter" lord of the rings fans can sound very snobby, simply because you read the books and loved them before the movies came out. I have read the book 3 times, the hobbit twice, and the sil 1 1/2 (i'm rereading it). I know what I am talking about even if I became a fan because of the movies, ok? again sorry if I sound rude. not enough sleep maybe.
No problem with people who became a fan because of the movies, since I am one of them! It is only people who say "Legolas is hot!" and then you ask them who Gandalf is and they don't know. It only bothers me if it is the only thing people get out the movies or the books. So go ahead and think Orlando Bloom is hot, that doesn't bug me because I know that you know what you're doing. It also is helpful that you don't make "Legolas-Lover posts." That is the one thing that makes me a little mad. Look at our member list, and you probably find more Legolas-lover names than any other common group of names.
lossenandunewen
04-18-2003, 05:45 PM
I didn't necessarily mean you, with the movie thing. What I mean is that there will be people who are like that, and just being a memeber of this board, and an avid poster at that, have already differentiated yourself from the people I was speaking of. I just mean those people who just see the movies for the actors looks, and those who don't even know there's a book.
Ledreanne313
04-18-2003, 05:45 PM
That is right. Most of the Legolas-lover names mean Orlando-lover. CelebrianTiwele, it's okay to be a fan the movie, I know plenty of people who are, and thats perfectly fine, it just helped you discover something more amazing, the book. I'm just saying that people out there say 'Legolas is hot' HOW DO THEY KNOW?? Tolkien never even told us what color hair he has, I have seen many drawings of him with brown hair before the movie ever came out. I wouldn't even care if they said 'Peter Jackson's Legolas is Hot!' Thats even okay, just as long as the don't say that Legolas is hot, referring to the character. What else really bothers me are thoose slash pairing things, anyone who has made one or took one should be ashamed! I hate those things. They are very stupid.

Yes, I agree. It bothers me when people know every little detail about 'Friends' but couldn't name a LOTR character if it killed them. Sorry about my earlier post, I was in a horrible mood last nite. My little bro gave me my first archery lesson yesterday!!! :D :D :D Back to topic.

Luthien, I read the book at the age of 12.
The movies, even though not following the book to the letter, are a reasonably well done story, which follow the book as close as possible.
The book itself can never be filmed the way it was written, but Peter jackson and his crew made LOTR come alive for a lot of fans.
The landscapes and places are well done.

04-26-2003, 03:46 AM
Well, do for you know: 'Abuse to drugs' means you are using them wrong. Well 'Abuse to Elves' there are, when you think about it, misusing them. They are not just 'people in a movie that are like, totally hot!' They are wonderous actors that have gotten to do my one most biggest dream since I was little and portray the characters from the book so well, even though there are some little differences in some characters (i.e. Faramir) yet they still did a wonderful job. They didn't chose Orlando becasue he was good looking, they chose him for he would fit the character and portray him well.
Anne
Maeglin
04-26-2003, 04:12 AM
I agree, I feel that Orlando Bloom fits the character of Legolas very well, he is just as I imagined him in the book (except for the soft voice, I always thought of him as a boastful, outspoken elf), but other than that he is just as I imagine him. And you can't say I think he's good-looking!!! I'm a guy and I happen to believe and know for a fact that I am 10 times better looking than him!!!:D
Ledreanne313
04-26-2003, 04:17 AM
You seem quite confident in yourself, Glorfindel! You seem very Nacissustic (sp.)! I agree with, I think Wonks, The real Glorfindel is probably much fairer, he is an Elf!
Anne
Maeglin
04-26-2003, 04:25 AM
Nacissustic?! Big word!! Glorfindel has an extensive vocabulary, but not that extensive!! If I had seen this post first then maybe I wouldn't have moved your rank up!!! lol jk:D Okay well now it's my turn to use a semi-big word. I happen to believe that you women are very insular about the looks of Elves and Men. You automatically assume that the real Glorfindel is hotter than me just because he is an elf!! Why can't a human be just as hot or hotter than an elf?! And you people can't say the real Glorfindel is hotter than me anyway, they took him out of the movies!! Even the animated ones!! Maybe you are imagining him hotter than he really is!! Oh and by the way I am much hotter than the drawing of Glorfindel in my avatar!!
Ledreanne313
04-26-2003, 04:28 AM
Lol! Well, I feel that elves are the most fairest, gracful, and wonderous creatures ever. And yes, mortals can be very good-looking, yet I will never meet you and you can never prove me wrong! Yet I do believe your words and think you might be quite cute, yet I will never know! So there!

04-30-2003, 10:49 PM

Even though many of us must admit that he played his part in the movies very well, I think the person of Orlando Bloom has gotten more 'groupies' then he ever wanted to have.
To see young girls go to see LOTR, just to get a good look at him, is very sad however and deminishes his performance as an actor.

And just for record, you haven't slain any balrogs. I know this for a fact. So let's just say, you can never be the beast Glorfindel is.
And as for "abusing" elves it's not really abuse. It's hard for people to separate the movie elves from the actual characters.
I think we should give them a little slack.

Yes, yes of course: A.t.E
Also, I am very percise on pronouncing the words right. And 2 that bother me the most are Dunedian and Legolas. Legolas: Prounounced Leg-O-las, not Leg-a-lis. And Dunedian: Prounounced Doon-a-DINE, not Doon-a-DANE. Just wanted to say that.
MT FRIENDS ARE SO- ANNOYING! They've never read the books, and only like the movie for Orli or Elijah. So every time they say: 'Legolas (they say Legalis) is so cute!' or something I have to yell at them, then I feel bad. GIR! I am really picky, not mean (I don't think...)

I have several different opinions on this issue, and they all contradict themselves! Once I posted this on a different LOTR forum, and my post ended up getting deleted because it was confusing people! So this time I will try not to be as confusing.
Opinion#1: I can't stand Legolas lovers. I mean, these girls go around going, "OMG Leggy is so hot, I looooooooooove him." ANNOYING! I view this as a disgrace to Legolas. First of all, he was not meant to be called Leggy, secondly, half of these people haven't read the book! I am ashamed to admit, I used to be a Legolas lover. But I was never like that, and I read the books before the movie, and I was a person who meant Legolas from the books. But I'm not like that anymore.
Opinion#2: I REALLY CAN'T STAND PEOPLE WHO THINK THAT THE BOOKS ARE BASED ON THE MOVIE!!! No one is going to belive this, but I heard this conversation with two girls, and they weren't even people who just watched the movie. They were going on and on about how the "elf dude, I think his name began with an L" was incredibly hot. I mean, they didn't even watch the movie, or pay attention to it.
Opinion#3: (this is going to be the contradicting one.) I don't like people who just read the books because of the movie, yet I do like them. I guess it just depends on the circumstances. My best friend saw the movie first, then read the books. (at least she knew that there were books!) I have nothing against her, because she truly loves the books, and is going to read all of Tolkien's works after she's done with the LOTR books. Yet there are some people who read the books because there is a movie, then go dissing Tolkien and LOTR. They don't seem to notice that the movies are based on the books!
Wow, I just pasted this into a word document to see how long it is, and I found out that it is longer that one of the essays I wrote! Sorry for the length people!
Ledreanne313
05-11-2003, 12:07 AM
I feel the same exact way. Some people only read the books because they liked the movie actors, and then when they finish they go: 'This guy didn't write it right. It was totally different from the movie! They even made Boromir die in the second books!.......' And so on. I really want to smack people like that. So for anyone who joined and never read the best book ever:
GO AWAY...AND NEVER COME BACK...NOW!
I don't mind you writting a lot. I love hearing others opinions on things that I agree with. Have more? Post it. I am willing to read it!

That huge ring fits on Sauron's finger, and fits on Frodo's finger. It's like it magically changes sizes!

And another one: Gandalf was based on the wizard in Harry Potter.
-And LOTR was writen like...50 years ago???

I don't know what the site was. But you will probably find it if you go to Google and search: '50 reasons why LOTR sucks' And you'll probably find it.
I already tried to email guy, but it wouldn't let me. I use my old address so people can't mail me back, but it wouldn't let me, and Comcast doesn't have a blocking system. And I found a thing on his website that wsa titled: 'I hate emails, and my hateful replies.' And this guy is CRAZY! He posted an email response to this one lady, and he threatened to kill her and her daughter and stuff. You know, people can do these things if they're hackers of something. And I was like 'Thank Godness it didn't work.' So you might not want to email him. I really wanted to. It was a great email. I wish I would of saved it to show you guys, I really told him off.

In saw that site, it was soooooooo pathetic. I kept insisting it was a joke for like two hours and it wasn't. That guy also wrote:
in the Inn, they are seen being stabbed and then are alive again.
that was really dumb. the guy was only talking about the movie, and he said they copied of alot of things written after the books, but before the movie. you know, i heard someone say that soemone said: " LOTR copied Harry Potter! Harry Potter has some books and then LOTR has some books, HP gets movies abd LORT gets movies." that was kind of scarey

And Dunedian: Prounounced Doon-a-DINE, not Doon-a-DANE. Just wanted to say that.
Umm...well, it's spelled Dunedain, not Dunedian, and it actually is Doon-uh-dain.;) But back to the point, I saw that WTC website, it is quite pathetic. The link is here (http://www.twotowersprotest.org) if anyone wants to go check out how dumb it is. People obviously do not know what they are talking about if they claim that LotR is based on Harry Potter in any way. If someone read both, and could give good reasons for liking Harry Potter more, than that's fine. But judging without knowing anything about LotR is pointless.

Well...Doon-a-dain or Doon-uh-dain...all I want everyone to know is that it's pronounced DINE not DAIN!!! I am veruy picky and I've seen that said in many books and websites that it's pronounced DINE.
That website was very sad...very sad indeed. I found another petition site and made my own petition titled '"Lord of the Rings" Innocent' A petition to stop LOTR petitions! I hope some people signed...

This is sort of going off the topic isn't it? Well i don't care, so don't mind me. Some thing out of the blue ( i think?): I would really love to draw characters, but i am sooooo picky about how i drawthings, i would take a week to draw one. I can start trying though. I might. But, i do not have a scanner at the moment, i could see if my library had one ( or 12) but i only go there one a week. I think i am going on and on about nothing. Oh well.

Yeah, you sort of are off topic. NOW ON TOPIC And the topic is (if you forgot, since we haven't been talking about it) A.t.E (or Abuse to Elves).
Have you guys noticed any other elf being abused? Everything that was needed to be said about Orlando and Legolas is said. How about Arwen? I think they abused her! Not in a bad way though. Her name is said like...once, twice?...in the book. So they went ahead and took out Glorfindel (what's their problem?! I WANT GLORFINDEL *not you, glorf*) and put her in there and in addition to that...she gets a part in TTT!!!!! SHE ISN'T EVEN IN THE BOOK!!!!! GIR! Okay..settling down now...that ticks me off (as you can plainly see). I could ramble on more about Arwen and ruining the movies...but I won't...I'm done now...

I see your point. Arwen the elf is abused in the movies. LOTR is NOT a love story, doesn't need a love story and is fine without a love story ( besided the small one originally). That little "dream scene" was freakishly disgusting. Would Arwen even do that?

So you'd be content, to have a man who you'd have to share with a whole bunch of screaming fans?
Not to forget, media, impressario's, etc.
I think I'd rather stay single, then having to go through that.

I am not saying that I would want to marry him (I do though...just because he's cute and the way he acts...) I would rather stay single to. I really do not plan on getting married, or having kids. I only want kids until they are seven years old and then I want them to go away:). I'm a dog and cat fan and I want to breed them when I get my own house...they will be my babies!

I agree with anne they should have had Glorfindel to save Frodo in the Fellowship, instead of Arwen. I think it is an abuse to Glorfindel and Arwen in a way.

Though here is something to consider for you all:
The book can never be filmed the way it was written, for this would take numerous hours of film, far beyond that of Peter Jackson. By it's own though, his movies are a work of art, just as the books are on it's own right.

I think Peter Jackson and crew did a great job filming the LOTR. I think the movie in all is a great work of art. I agree with that. I also understand that you can't possibly add every detail of the book into the movie. How ever in my oppinion I think certain changes such as Arwen saving Frodo just bothers me.

Yes, I do think the movies are great! I love the movies SO much, some things bother me...a lot. Buit I think PJ did a great job. I know he couldn't possibley do the book exactly, so I am not mad at him. I'm just a little annoyed at what they did with some of the characters, includeing Glorfindel, TOm Bombadil, Arwen, Boromir, and Faramir.

Yeah. And did anyone notice how much they twisted the Two Towers around? I mean, they made the battle of Helms Deep from two chapters to an hour-and-a-half long! They left out everything about the Palantir and Pippin and Gandalf confronting Saruman and all that into the battle. I have to admit, yeah, it was a really cool battle. But still. And I have no earthly idea how they're gonna do the Return of the King. It's either gonna be really chopped up or a zillion hours long.

I agree, they took much out, as well as twisted much, in the Two Towers film. I believe that the confrontation with Saruman and the Palantir will take place very near the beginning of RotK (it's a very important part and they better have it!!). But even so, it will most likely be a very choppy movie.
But then again..... perhaps not. They really don't have much to do with Sam and Frodo in it. All they have is the fight with Shelob, Frodo's rescue, and a long walk through Mordor with the destruction of the Ring. Travelling through Mordor they can probably cut down to taking no more than 15 minutes of film at most.;)
But thats all beside the thread topic. But I know what you mean about the battle, they should not have brought the Elves into it (although I actually did think it was a nice touch). But they killed Haldir in doing so, which made me very angry!!!

Actually the scouring of the shire is not in the movie, and Saruman is killed in Orthanc when is staff is broken.:( For more movie changes, take a look at my thread in TROTK titled 'Tragic ORTK News' or something like that.
They can change the movie alittle, but killing a character that does not die is just not right.

I didn't like the way they twisted the movie for TTT. I thought it was very choppy. It made me angry seeing the elves at Helms Deep. I also agree that Helms Deep was too long in the movie as well.
Maeglin
08-09-2003, 04:16 PM
Entirely too long. They could have made it probably about 15-20 minutes long instead, and then they still would have had time for either Frodo and Shelob or the confrontation with Saruman. But again that's beside the topic of this thread.;)
