Heheheh, your puns always manage to crack me up MD! :D :)
As usual interesting, but rather conflicting thoughts. That "picture of Sauron" doesn't look half-bad though, although I seriously doubt it has anything to do with LotR.
Thanks for the site though.

It's nice to be depreciated.
And don't worry, fiends, this thread will go on and on and on ...
...just like Rose's Heart...
Hmmm....I wonder what sort of crazy scheme Michel is coming up with right now...
btw, I'm still awaiting that picture of Shelob. It shouldn't be too hard to get ahold of: since you have that speccy telepathic link going with PJ.
Gandalf White

Yes, yes, yes, a picture of Shelob please!!! :D We've seen her web, Frodo looking at her, Sam running, but give us a picture of her herself!
Michel Delving
05-25-2003, 03:30 PM
Shelob, Shelob, Shelob that's all you young people ever think about, morning noon and night. Is it too big? Is it too small? Will PJ do this? Will PJ do that? With never a thought for Shelob's poor mother, in the Autumn years of her life... Well if that's how you feel, go ahead, be crucified, see if I care...
More theorem's than you can shake a steven at...
After the Last Battle of the First Age there were some Balrogs left that escaped the wrath and destruction of the Valar. The exact number of original Balrogs is not known. Those who survived managed to escape as Tolkien describes:
"The Balrogs were destroyed, save some few that fled and hid themselves in caverns inaccessible at the roots of the earth..." (Silmarillion)
We also have the following letter that specifically discusses the Balrog of Moria:
"The Balrog is a survivor from the Silmarillion and the legends of the First Age. So is Shelob. The Balrogs, of whom the whips were the chief weapons, were primeval spirits of destroying fire, chief servants of the primeval Dark Power of the First Age. They were supposed to have been all destroyed in the overthrow of Thangorodrim, his fortress in the North. But it is here found (there is usually a hang-over especially of evil from one age to another) that one had escaped and taken refuge under the mountains of Hithaeglin (the Misty Mountains). It is observable that only the Elf knows what the thing is - and doubtless Gandalf." (Letter #144)
Some people have questioned whether Gandalf knew what this thing was and only the Elf, Legolas, recognized the Balrog. The above letter clearly shows Gandalf did know what it was; whereas the encounter on the stair was behind a door and Gandalf could not see his opponent.
Gimli, however, only knows it as "Durin's Bane". He does not know that a Balrog is an evil spirit left over from the First Age and a servant of Morgoth.
Tolkien has left open the possibility of more Balrogs still buried deep and waiting to be awakened.

Not Only But Always ...
The Balrogs were originally the servants of Morgoth in the First Age, of whom, Sauron was also his servant. The Balrogs and Sauron were all Maiar and somewhat coeval; it is not debatable whether a Balrog would recognize Sauron as successor and serve him willingly.
If one considers the chronology of events in the Third Age then a certain "relationship" or understanding becomes evident. The Balrog was awakened by the Dwarves in the year 1980. The Dwarves then fled Moria in the year 1981. The Tale of Years falls silent regarding Moria until the year 2480, when Sauron starts to populate Moria with his creatures, namely the orcs. From this point on, up to the year of the War of the Ring in 3018 there is a cohabitation of the Balrog and the orcs for 538 years!
Certainly Sauron knew of the existence of the Balrog (especially at the point when his orcs entered Moria), and the Balrog seems to have tolerated the presence of Sauron's orcs. Yet I do not believe that Sauron could not have controlled or commanded the Balrog. Sauron would have had the ability to dominate a will as strong as a Balrog.
As such, the Balrog acted just as he did in the story: in accordance with a "common evil" against "good". Gandalf, like the Balrog, was a Maiar, but aligned with the Valar(good), who were the eternal enemies of Morgoth(evil). Since the Balrogs were the chief servants of Morgoth it naturally follows that the Balrog of Moria would have attacked Gandalf. Not only that, but the Fellowship had entered/invaded Moria, and they were armed. This too would naturally lead to a confrontation.
Sauron could have commanded the Balrog to say attack Lorien or fight against Minas Tirith. The main powers of a Balrog are against armies of lesser enemies, or in breaking castle walls, and against other powerful opponents like Wizards or Elf-lords. Originally Tolkien envisaged the Balrog's return during the various battles of The War of the Ring, an idea later put aside but rekindled by Peter Jackson in his Lord of the Rings movie Trilogy (particularly the upcoming Return of the King).
You're changing the topic, Michel...
Where's this pic of Shelob???

Some great stuff from my Palantir re RotK:
Denethor will make his first appearance in the TTT extended DVD!
Ghan-Buri-Ghan has been cut from RotK!
Mumakil and Nazgul King will have center-stage appearances much more spectacular! Who the fell is Mumakil, anyone know? I'm just the receiver remember!
The Witch-King will be played by Lawrence Makoare (Lurtz in Fellowship of the Ring)!
The first cut was 6 hours of material, so a possible 4 hour final film could happen!!
One of the songs featured in RotK’s soundtrack will be sung sung by Liv Tyler and called Arwen's song!
The battle of Minas Tirith will take place in the city not in the fields outside!
As with the battle at Helm’s Deep, the elves from Lothlorien will join forces with men during the battle by the Black Gate of Mordor!
The third film will end as the first started, with a voice over by Galadriel. After the Grey Havens and the death’s of Arwen and Aragorn are shown!
Five death scenes for Saruman have been filmed to foil the rumour mongers until the last minute! Christopher Lee has said that he hopes the ending from the book is used - Scouring is back??
The Palantir is fading....
... I see Balrogs ... Sauron's eye ... and Merry ...

The Fool is the beginning, the starting point. Where one is innocent, naive, eyes wide open. He anticipates only adventure and experience, and has no specific expectations. Before him lies the world, of which he so far knows little.

Michel, you are SOO full of it. First of all, Gandalf's right, thats not a balrog, its a balrock. Secondly, there are no balrogs left in the third age except for the one in moria, and now thats dead also. Third of all, Tolkien described Sauron as tall, dark, royal-looking, imposing, and terrible. An ugly albino orc with a balrock in the backround is about the most unconvincing load of garbage I have ever seen. Period. AND STOP ACTING LIKE A SMART @$$!!!

Sauron and Balrogs are on the same level, that of Maiar. How can you control a being on the same level as you? Don't you have to be more powerful than they?

Not always. Gothmog controlled the other Balrogs.
Flame of Anor
06-23-2003, 11:49 PM
well, then i suppose in that case there must be varying levels within the same level. likewise with the Istari, Galadriel said that Gandalf was the most powerful, but the White Councel chose Saruman instead because they saw him as the most wise or something like that. i am not too familiar with the forming of the White Councel and the coming of the Wizards.

I will call you down on your comment there though good Michel Delving. Please point out to me one place in all the works of Tolkien where Balrogs ever serve Sauron after the end of the First Age. None, nada, it ain't there.
Gorthaur the Cruel was powerful enough that he became the Lord of the Werewolves and Vampires. Melkor's handservants were the Balrogs who were headed by Gothmog, Lord of Balrog and Captain of the forces of Thangorodrim. There is no statement in any of the works that ever illustrates them working together or where one served the other. After all, they were both Maiar.

This is true. Tolkien states clearly in HoME X (Morgoth's Ring) that Sauron was more powerful than the balrogs.
'Melkor had corrupted many spirits — some great, as Sauron, or less so, as Balrogs.' From Orcs in Myth's Transformed.
Just following Grond's example. :D

And I must print my own retraction. In HoMe VII, The Treason of Isengard, it is very clear in early drafts that Tolkien did indeed mean for the Balrog to have appeared as a servant of Mordor/Sauron. from HoMe VII, The Treason of Isengard
The strongest evidence for this comes from the original version of the Lothlorien story, where it is at least strongly suggested (being represented as the opinion of the Lord and Lady of Lothlorien) that the Balrog had been sent from Mordor not long since (see further on this question p. 247 and note 11). Moreover, in the texts of the story of the Bridge of Khazad-dum from this time Gimli does not cry out 'Durin's Bane!' This is just one of many sample drafts that actually point to Tolkien, at least, toying with the idea of portraying the Balrog as a servant of Mordor/Sauron. (Darn I hate being wrong.:))
Michel Delving

I suppose, in that case face, there must be varying levels and hovels, within the same level and bevel, Balrogs ever serve Sauron ever serve Balrogs; it is very clear in early drafts and gusts, that Tolkien did indeed mean for the Balrog to have appeared as a servant of Mordor/Sauron/Sauron/Mordor.
Do you know Tolkien escaped going over the top in the WW1 trenches by sheer luck and trench fever. Just think we wouldn't exist, in our current state, without the luck of the fatalistic chaos that orders existence.
And Sauron will crawl beneath the bells of the church fire and open up our wings of crow black black crow fishing boat bobbing sea...

After reading this whole discussion, I have to agree with you about the picture of Sauron unmasked. I do not think that the Balrog was put there for PJs amusement, and I think that you can clearly see that it is a Balrog in the picture you made of Sauron changing shapes. The change in color brings out the Balrog. I agree with you on the fact that it is Sauron unmasked, it is a Balrog, but I do not think that we will see a bunch of Balrogs coming in at the Black Gate. I think that one would be really cool, as well as Sauron himself coming forward, but I hope that PJ doesnt do anything like put a dragon (I dont know you really meant that in your previous posts) or have a horde of Balrogs. Still I dont see how anyone can argue that it is a Balrog, just seems to detailed to be a rock.

Sauron returns to human form at the climax of the film. Just before the Battle of Morannon commences, he arrives -- looking very similar to how he appeared in the prologue. He stares over the Lords of the West, and his "eyes" meet with Aragorn's. He then (silently) orders his great army to attack with a wave of his mace.
As the battle rages Sauron simply looks on. When Frodo claims the Ring (this will all be intercut for dramatic effect), Sauron turns and peers at Mount Doom. His Nazgul screech off towards the mountain, and for a brief moment his army falls silent.
When the Ring is destroyed we see Sauron die... though how that will appear has yet to be nailed down. There are several versions in the works, and one of them is an exact "duplication" of his explosion during the Prologue.

How did MD saw a balrog? He is nuts.
Yes, but he entertains us whilst being nuts.
His SW3 'Wookie-fest' is quite plausible.
From StarWars.com Databank
Shaggy giants from an arboreal world, the tall and commanding Wookiee species is an impressive sight to even the most jaded spacer. Despite their fearsome and savage countenance, Wookiees are intelligent, sophisticated, loyal and trusting. Loyalty and bravery are near-sacred tenets in Wookiee society. When peaceful, Wookiees are tender and gentle. Their tempers, however, are short; when angered, Wookiees can fly into a berserker rage and will not stop until the object of their distemper is sufficiently destroyed.
During the time of the Galactic Republic, the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk was represented in the Galactic Senate by a number of Wookiee potentates. This meant little to the unscrupulous Empire that arose to replace that august government. Despite their proven intelligence, Wookiees were enslaved by the Empire and exploited for their brute strength. Their homeworld was blockaded, and a free Wookiee was a rare sight in the galaxy.
Perhaps the best-known free Wookiee was Chewbacca, loyal co-pilot and friend of famed Corellian smuggler Han Solo. Chewbacca was instrumental in the defeat of the Empire, and the eventual liberation of his people.
So the movie could begin with their enslavement, followed by Anakin's downfall, etc etc.
Anyway, back to LotR...:)

So Sauron is destroyed. But i thought The Maiar cant die. Unless he dies physically and is cast out of Ea just like Melkor? What gives?!
Sauron is physically destroyed.
But his spirit remains. Although he is too weak to reform into a visable being.
Melkor was physically destroyed, and his spirit cast into the void.

Let $X$ be a simply connected space and $\Bbbk$ a commutative ring. LORD!
Goodwillie, Burghelea and Fiedorowiscz proved that the Hochschild cohomology of the singular chains on the pointed loop space $HH^{*}S_*(\Omega X)$ is isomorphic to the free loop space cohomology $H^{*}(X^{S^{1}})$. We proved that this isomorphism is compatible with both the cup product on $HH^{*}S_*(\Omega X)$ and on $H^{*}(X^{S^{1}})$. In particular, we explicit the algebra $H^{*}(X^{S^{1}})$ when $X$ is a suspended space, a complex projective space or a finite CW-complex of dimension $p$ such that $\frac {1}{(p-1)!}\in {\Bbbk}$.

all quite valid points Weathersgreat2006 but you neglect to say to say that when the background came forward it was magnified like a telescopic microscope and if you can't see the Balrog reflected in the tear in Sauron's right eye then even you must agree that Grima had it right?

I am in Minas Morgul, this tower of sorcery, I cannot escape. I see wraiths, approaching encroaching, touching, scraping the flesh. There is no hope.
'Minas Morgul' was the name given to this city after its capture by the Nazgûl in III 2002. The city itself, though, was much older - as Minas Ithil, it had stood since the late Second Age, and was some 2,100 years old when it was renamed.
I see it's origins and the fall of man.
Sauron whispers and I float down...

IT'S ALIVE!
I've created a monster from which there is no escape, it will hunt me down like Gollum.
Some scholars have suggested Frankenstein regretted bringin his creature to life. This writer disagrees; Frankenstein held himself guiltless to the very end. There was not a moment of regret for the right reasons.
...was attempting to play God in the creation of the monster...
...the Monster provides an insightful narrative .... a narrative that relates his process of learning about his surroundings, language and human emotion. This narrative provides a significant view of the psychology of human development, underscores the problems of creating life using technology, and substantiates the view of the internal conflicts and misperceptions of the Monster pertinent to the defense of his actions. Sauron will show up with a host of Balrogs and dragons...
Then the X-Men will show up with Aragorn and Sephiroth will fly his fighter plane in to help fight Sauron. Midgets will spring from the ground like daisies and Raistlin will charge into the fight and cast Ultima on Sauron, thus saving the day.
Really people...that thing is just a piece of rock, not a balrog. Sauron won't be at the Black Gate.
By Michel Delving: I wish I lived in Norway.
Why? Because of the pre-premiere 15. December?
I could have bought tickets, but it was too expensive.
I don't want to use 515 Norwegian kroner + 200 kroner bus on one screening (Actually I would, but none of my friends wanted :)).That would be about $73 i think.
If you want to buy tickets and can Norwegian and want to pay the whole trip to Norway, Michel, buy the tickets at ticnet.no and search for "Ringenes Herre".

What I think will happen is...you'll see everyone fighting at the Gate and it will keep cutting from that to Frodo and company up at Mt Doom. Sauron will get frisky and decide to make an appearance at the Black Gate. So we will see Sauron and a host of orcs starting to march towards the battle so he can clean house. Just before he gets there and kills everyone, Gollum and the ring plummet into the depths of Mt Doom, thus destroying Sauron in a very dramatic fashion.

We see Eowyn and Merry on a horse, ready to fight.
Galadriel leaning against Frodo who is lying on the ground (it seems like it was a clip from a dream, that maybe Frodo has).
Gollum who talks to himself about taking the ring.
Sam who accuses Gollum for wanting to kill them, Frodo who kinda "protects" Gollum from Sam, and Gollum smiles in an evil way to Sam.
Arwen and Elrond; Elrond says to Arwen that he can't protect her any longer (I dont remember.. but it was something about Arwen and a sword, and that the King should have it..).
There are enormous battle-scenes!
We see Eomer crying with a person in his arms (maybe Theoden?)
Many Nazgul attacs.
Legolas fighting.
Frodo running inside Shelobs lair with the phial he got from Galadriel, and we se Shelob running after him!
There's something with a blue flame.
SAM IN MOUNT DOOM, AND HE SCREAMES "NO FRODO!"

Btw where did you get those pictures, most of them didnt show anything that is connected with Sauron and the about the first one-this is a uruk hai from the first movie and befind there is nothing but a rock

Ahhh, I think I finally see what MD's doing now. He's not saying, "Look, here's the actual physical proof of Sauron in ROTK," although he did say that (I think). The photos are not meant to be taken literally. He's asking us to look behind the images, behind the Uruk-hai, behind the funny old man in the glasses and the hat, and see the absolute, sheer terror and danger that they all represent. He is showing us that there is a lot of badness and mysteriousness and darkness and shadow in the world, and in essence, this is what Sauron is! This is all Sauron's fault! BAD Sauron. So, wherever there's a lot of badness and darkness taking form in ROTK, there's Sauron. ;) "Run away!...run away!"

Are you smoking controled substances? Cause that's the only way Sauron can be seen in that picture dude.
Maybe you mixed up the controled substances and snorted that by accident?

Sorry Michel :( but it's just been confirmed...
Then, information came through from super-spy Dr Lynskey. He tells us that, “Sauron DOES NOT APPEAR IN PHYSICAL FORM at the end of the film”, and goes on to hint that there’s a good chance Aragorn will fight something big at the end...

Sauron in physical form would violate so many rules. This is good news.

Confirmed my eye! ;) I'm not believing this until several sources back it up.
Although I do hope it's true....

Heheh, I'm thankful RD didn't understand this either... MD, did you take up Towelie's offer? It certainly seems you did, instead of following the example of Stan, Kyle, Eric, and Kenny...Sometimes you have to be cryptic to get your point across, Nether. ;)

One thing you must learn in the beginning is to never take Michel Delving seriously, except in very special circumstances.
I'm afraid he's made this whole thread up. While it's detrimental to his mental process, his creativity is apparently limitless. :)

The first one of course, but actually I don't like any.I think that w we should not have any pics of the body of Sauron. That was the strongest, the most horrible moment in the book,we don't know how Sauron looks like,he is just an eye which is watching you.
Gandalf White
10-29-2003, 02:50 PM
Have you two read nothing? MD is joking! :p
(And it can be argued from the books themselves that Sauron did have physical form, and the eye is more metaphorical than anything else.)

Yes of course he had a physical form, but during III age he was just a spirit, and as far as I know LOTR's events are part of III age.:)

I'm not exactly sure where it is, but there is a specific thread talking about this. I'll find the link if you wish.
Just for example, Gollum himself states that Sauron has a nine-fingered hand, apparently learned during his "stay" in Mordor.

Well, we did it for Christopher Lee...let's do it for MD and start a petition on the internet to "Bring MD Back To The Tolkien Forum." Who knows--maybe he's even got a scan or two of Sauron from near the very end of the movie--he could start another thread called "The Last Picture of Sauron in the World!"Originally posted by Gil-Galad

I'm not in my body right now, but if you'll leave a message..." :)

It will grieve you to know then, that he is dead.
He was my brother.
I was leafing through his old artifacts, paper and internet history when I came across this site, to find him still logged in (via the marvel of cookies, no doubt) and saw your heartfelt plea for his return.
It was a bizarre accident that claimed his life. He was in fact on his way to see Return of the King on it's premiere day. A few hundred feet from the cinema doors, in it's very car park, a loose piece of gravel was propelled at bullet velocity by a passing Mazda MX-5 and pierced his brain via his left eye; instantaneous oblivion was naturally the result.
He never got to see Return of the King. So I saw it for him in his memory. My name is Roger. I hope i can do his minor legacy justice.

yeh, i can't see what it is even when i zoom in. It looks like it has wings but....you can't tell. Also, it show Sauron fully would be bad for PJ because so many people have images in thier head. To show him would disapoint people.
Personally I can't wait for the EE so we can se Sarumon.

Wow, untimely, but what kind of death is timely anyway. I dont know if I believe Michel has passed on, but if he has, its great that Roger can take it so lightly. Death in my view shouldn't be such a sad thing. You go off into any other world or a new life, whatever its unknown. Maybe, we should be scared for our lost ones who know not where they go. To miss someone is very important, and to keep them remembered, it all boils down to the kind of person he/she was. I think Michel will be OK judging by his essence on this forum.
