As requested by a few people here on the boards, I will now proceed to post my work here.
The first is a design for a longsword:

Beautiful! My favorite is the castle one . . . I wanted to step right into the pic. And the Laughing Inn looks so jolly and comfortable! I notice that the pics seem to be different styles -- any experience drawing swans?
That is very amazing work! Great job! Yes, I do like the castle the best, very peaceful and nice to look at. The Inn type one was very kewl too!
Great work! Keep at it!

Ledreanne313/Anne:
Could you give me a description of what you want it to look like?
Nenya:
I never tried before, but if you tell me what you have in mind, I will give it a try. I use a few different styles, whichever seems to fit the picture best.
Oren: Thanks, I will keep this up. Currently I am trying to get working with Bryce. ;)
Isenho/Denny: Thanks :) Good to hear from a fellow artist.

Well, my RP character Nenya often wears a swan medalion upon her forehead. I've always pictured it as a side view of a swan that is white, graceful, ethereal, and altogether Nenyaish, if you get my meaning. :p I have never exactly formulated an exact idea of how this swan looks, so that part is open for interpretation. I think it may have a few diamonds on it and a black beak.
So, if you can even work with this vague interpretation, perhaps one of the sword styles would work well?

Yes of course, I was just waiting to see if you would.
Two short dagger like swords. They are curved more then normal, so when thrown, they come back *as a boomerang does*. They are silver tinted green with a black double hand handle. *PLEASE DO NOT STEAL MY IDEA ANYONE!!*
Thank You Kindly, Anne

Nenya, i'll take this challenge, for the medallion and the matching sword.
Anne, I'll be very honest to you. A curved short sword, with a double handed handle as described, would not look well. A short sword is about two feet long, so is a double handed handle. Your sword would then have a blade as long as the handle, which is totally off balance and near impossible to wield. I can try and design it with a single handed handle, which would look a lot better, plus it would be useable.

Oh yes, I was typing the discription out of a notebooka dn I must of looked at the long sword discription for a sentence or to. Sorry! Yes it is a normal hadle, for I would not want to hold the short sword with 2 hands anyway. The handle is dark green also.
Thank you, Anne

The castle picture has a softer feel. The Farthorn picture has a more realistic definition.
:)
I really enjoy them all!
Is it ok if I save them to my computer so I can examine your technique?
I've only started and (like I said) the one tiny pixeled color job I did got lost. :( But if I could study your techniques it would help for the future. :D

Are all these scenes/swords out of your own head, Scatha? If they are, then you should write too (maybe you do already). I suspect you don't get scenes like that without a story going on in them as well. What are the opening hours at the Laughing King?

Eledhwen, yes indeed they are. :) Most are either inspired by reading or by writing.
The laughing Kings tavern is open 6.5 days a week, monday to saturday from 10 am to 4 am, sundays from noon to midnight.
The place is owned by a retired soldier, but mainly operated by two chatelaines, working in shifts.
It recently was renamed: Ithil Opele. ;)

I was thinking (while vacuum cleaning the floor) that you could write the story of each sword you create. I remember the bit in the Hobbit where Elrond tells Gandalf and Thorin the origins of their swords, but there are thousands of years unaccounted for. It could be a series, with each title being the name of the sword.
I believe the fullest account of a sword's history is that of Anglachel or Gurthang, the black sword made by Eol, and owned by Thingol, Beleg and Turin (Silmarillion).

What do you mean most of his time on the customer side?
And, yes Scatha! Tell the stories of your swords!! Stories about swords are brilliant!!!

Ok, for a quick overview of the twin short swords of Farathorn:
Farathorn's full name is Farathorn Tar-Earebrion, born 156 years ago. His mother is a full blooded Numenorean and his father an elf from Mithlond. The 3 swords (including the longsword) have been handed down from his mother's side, who decends from the line of Arathorn. Her ancestors brought the blades with them, when they fled from Numenor, before the lands were swallowed.
Nothing has been recorded yet about these swords, as none have been put into action yet. (at least not in Farathorn's case)
I'll post more about them later, as the swords do have a tale.

Wonks, The TolkienWiki is a grand project of building up a huge and reliable Tolkien-related knowledge base.
The initiator and the Host of the site and of the project itself is Walter.
There are quite a few TTF-members there too, who contribute with their research and knowledge to fill in the "empty cells" ;) of the data-bank.
We have recently invited the TTF skillful Masters of Art to contribute to the project with their wonderful drawings and paintings and Scatha has shown interest.
Thanx once again, Scatha! :D
In fact, anyone who would like to provide a serious and reliable entry, is very well welcome to the project. I think, Walt thinks the same way! ;) :D
However, works like essays or just brief entries describing particular items/places/characters from T's writings are also acceptable.

Amazing... Truely amazing work, Scatha... I feel so small and pitiful... How did you figure out the balance and the motion of things so well? How long did it take you? I'm starting to wonder if I've only started to scratch the surface... See, ppl tell me that my stuff is really wonderful, but it makes me angry because I do those drawings with a picture in my mind and I can never draw it to the same quality as I see it in my head. And they don't understand why I think the picture isn't so great... How do you do it?
Wonko The Sane

Scatha...when you say you worked on that lady pic with joy do you mean with happiness, or with somebody named Joy?
If the latter...who is Joy?
Scatha
06-28-2003, 12:58 AM
Thanks goofoo, but don't feel small. It took me a long time to get where I am now, as I never stopped drawing ever since I was 6 or 7 years old. That gave me about 30 years of time to perfect the skills, both with ups and downs.
The balance of character portraits is a question of anatomy and the landscapes is a matter of composition. (how to divide the space you have at hand)
The characters is something that you try to make as vivid as you can, anatomy wise and to get expression in the faces.
The landscapes is trying to make optimal use of the paper, while not making it seem too crowded.
Never think too much of that picture in your mind, as most of us artists are not capable of drawing exactly what they had in mind, but merely approach the picture they have in mind. That is a question of experience and the ability to be content with the result. Remember, 'better' is the enemy of 'good'. If something is good, do not try to improve it, as this is often where one screws up. ;)
Wonks, I meant that I had a great time and was challenged to make that character portrait. The player that requested it was most pleased with it, when she got to see the end result. My 'joy' in this was her reaction when she received the picture. :)

Beautimous!!!! Thanks Scatha! Nenya will make full use of her blade . . . really, she will. How could she let such beauty sit idle? ;) But she'll make sure to use it for noble purposes, such as killing the peoples of the Mornclaur (for which Eredhael will try to kill her and then I might have two swords fighting each other). Ok, I'm not making any sense anymore.
Thanks Scatha! It's beautiful. :)

Today I did something that may seem drastic. I wrote all my artwork onto CD and deleted them from my computer.
I can almost hear everyone ask why, but i'll elaborate on that.
I am setting up another PC, that has a little more processor power, thus the one I work on now needs to be cleaned out.
My old machine, P4 1Ghz, will be reformatted and set up for my girlfriend, while I will start working on the P4 1.6Ghz machine I recently added to the computer pool.
Wish me luck folks, since I aim to set them up in a network at home, so both she and I can be online. (which is now mainly just me ;) )

Can you tell me how you design a sword? When I draw one, it's always part of a bigger picture, so I never see the necessity to make it spectacular. But I'd love to have a few more different swords. Most of mine just get a pommel, a crossbar, a hilt and a blade and off they go ;)
