****Before I start, I want everyone to know that this is all my own work, done on my own computer, without help from any other websites. I have a small book next to me for guidance when I need it though****

Ok, lets start with the very basics here:
Sindarian is one of two languages used by the Elves in Beleriand and Middle-Earth. Sindarian is named after the Sindar, the Grey Elves, or those that stayed and were faithful to Elu Thingol

**There is alot of inconsitency in Tolkiens works, so I will simplify some stuff**

The - i *
Of the - En*
The, followed by word that starts with I - ir

* - These two are used interchangably sometimes which is why you see Ernil I Pherianath for Prince of the Halflings instead of Ernil en Pherianath. It is just a shortand version of saying it I guess

--------------------------------------------

When turning nouns from singular to plural, you change the vowels in the word. So you would change the letter, instead of adding endings like in English. So in English, Mountain would turn to Mountains, but in Sindarian, Orod would change to Eryd. But In Tolkiens works, it is Ered, wich is an inconsistancy

Turning words from singular to plural
If in any non final sylable
A -> E ~ Annon - Ennyn (Gate - Gates)
E -> E ~ Edhel – Edhil (Elf – Elves)
I -> I ~ Ithil - Ithil (Moon - Moons)
O -> E ~ Orod - Eryd (Mountain - Mountains)
U -> Y ~ Tulus – Tylus (? – Plural?)

In the final sylable
A – AI ~ Ras – Rais (Horn – Horns)
E – I ~ Edhel – Edhil (Elf – Elves)
I - I ~ Ithil – Ithil (Moon – Moons)
O – Y ~ Orch – Yrch (Orc – Orcs)
U – U ~ Tulus – Tylus (? – Plural?)

Other ways of turning nouns plural
~ ‘rim’ can be added to the end of words to represent ‘folk of’ or ‘people of’. For example, Galadh, wich means tree, turns into Galadhrim which means ‘People of the Trees’.
~ ‘hoth’ can be added to represent a band of, usually an evil band. Glam, which is ‘Enemy’ or sometimes used as ‘Orcs’ turns into Glamhoth, which is ‘Band of Orcs’
~ ‘iath’ can be used to represent ‘A group of’. So Gil, which is ‘Star’ can turn into Giliath to represent ‘A group of stars’.

These can all be used as alternatives to turning words plural the classical way. I’d recommend memorizing the list above with all the transformations just to get used to it. It’s not hard to memorize.

Verbs

Commands are words like ‘Listen’, and ‘Open’. They tell you to do something. They can also be used as verbs, like ‘I listen’ or ‘I open’. Here, I’ll tell you how they work:

Roots:
Edr – Open
List – Listen
N – Is
Nor – Ride
Tir – Watch
Sir – Flow
Cui – Live
Dar – Halt
Egler – Glorify
Ped - Speak

Those were just some basic roots, and now I’ll tell you how you work with them

Present – Add an ‘a’ to the end of the root
Edra – Opens
Lista – Listens
Na - Is
And so forth

Past – Add ‘ant’ to the end of the root
Norant – Rode
Tirant – Watched
Sirant – Flowed
And so forth

Future – Add ‘ath’ to the end of the root

Eglerath – Will glorify
And so forth
Imperitive – Add ‘o’ to the end of a word
Pedo – (You, understood) Speak
Edro – (You, understood) Open*

And so forth

Doing – Add ‘iel’ to the end of a word to add ‘ing’ in English
Niel – Being
Noriel – Riding
Tiriel – Watching
And so forth

Have been – Add ‘i’ to the end of a word
Siri – Have Flowed
Cui – Have lived
Dari – Will halt
And so forth

*This was the spell used by Gandalf when trying to open I Ennyn Durin (Doors of Durin)

Adding ‘I …’ to a word

So there you have it. A very simple and basic lesson in Sindarian. This can just be used to build off of, and to give you all a basic knowledge of the language. I hope this is finally helpful to this sub-forum. This isn’t near everything there is to know remember, this is just the basics, and a little bit more. There is still all kinds of mutation and word changing that I might eventually explain later. I think this should be stickeyed for all to see...

Well, I'm impressed! This is much better than going to all the trouble of buying a book, or going to a website! :rolleyes:
haha, but seriously that is quite winteresting. I know virtually no Quenya or Sindarin (<-- note spelling), but I have understood the basic grammar from a book I have.. I'm still surprised to see how much Sindairn is like Latin! (e.g. the past (perfect) tense, 1st person singular suffix is -i; e.g. in "Veni, vidi, vici".

Thanks! :)

So if for the present you add -a to the root (or infinitive), where does Gandalf's "Edro, edro!" in front of the door of Moria come from?

Edr, wich is the root of 'Open', pluss a 'o' for a suffix, creates a command, or a imperitive. So I could say 'Noro!' ('Nor' being ride) and that would produce 'Ride' with an understood You, or 'Ride!', still with an understood You with an exclamation point;)
