View Full Version : Who or what am I?
Ancalagon
05-12-2003, 12:32 AM
Like a shooting star I traversed the firmament,
summoned deep from within the void,
Guided by the One who summoned me
nameless I entered this strange new place.
I awoke as though from a dream,
though had never slept nor stirred it seemed.
Around me I heard sounds and voices,
they spoke to me and I rejoiced.
Whispers in the night they were,
gently whispering to me.
Under stars we laughed and talked
exchanging lore in timeless walk
Others were gathered to hear me speak
countless answers they did seek,
I took to walking through the crowd
asking them about their dreams,
for like me they were in sight and sound
yet they did not move or look around.
Once I loved but not again,
for fate had made this union end.
Though I called to her on each new day
she could not hear what I would say,
for lost was she deep in the night
though not from mind, just from sight.
Lonely has my life become,
as those I love abandon me
Most now sleep, their dreams undone
while others pass across the sea.
Yet still I walk beneath the Sun,
slower than when I was young
I tend my garden biding time
until I return back to the One.
Who am I?

I can't say whether it's too easy or too difficult, but I think it's worth a try:
Once I was a god of old,
not at home, all on my own,
seafarer for many a year
master of wind, sea and fire,
until I was chosen from the mountain girl,
a young spouse she wanted
and not an old f*rt,
but she chose not the young
deceived by my feet
our "luck" begun.
It did not last long
for to different we were.
Forsaken I was then for ages long
until I was "remembered",
as a mortal's son
to seafare once more
and anew the cycle began
a new love I found
but my lot was the same
parted once more,
a prodigal son
estranged to my wife
we could not fare well.
I am son of a god
and son of a king,
my daughter goddess,
the other a queen
two names I was given
and yet I am one
now tell me good sir,
canst thou give me but one?

05-18-2003, 10:08 AM
I was born in the vale of Ered Wethin,
I passed down the edge of Ard-galen.
Rejecting the North my jouney is southward
My brothers all join me in my quest,
with tales of kingdoms from afar.
of Gondolin, and Thingol's realm,
and Túrin Turambar.
In fens I fear I lost my way
I stumbled then I fell
but throught the gate I finally passed
to reach the light of day.
At last I reached the Willow lands
my journey almost done.
The sea, the sea it waits for me
My Lord Ulmo at last is found.
What an I?
Can you guess from my poor verse?

Well done Beleg! :D
As I have promissed, here comes now my riddle ;)
*****
The Dark Lord was my Father.
The Dark Lord was my Mother.
The Dark Lord was my Master.
And born I was to bring grief and disaster.
The dungeons deep and the caverns vast
my halls were, where I was to last.
But hungry I grew for beauty and blood
and came out in the lit open world.
Its fields and its woods,
its skies and deep rivers
I conquered with lust
And my name all whispered and shivered.
And valiant heroes and kings of that world
Came challenging ME – the Master of Death!
And death was what I gave for reward
to those who dared stand in my path.
And minions many I held in my power
Their flesh and minds I mastered or devoured
to my desire. With their fates I played as I pleased
for words I had always found at ease
to enslave my foes or my servants to death!
But gone now I am! The black Master of Death
fell dead and defeated – but not by a hand!
By the light I was beaten, to the light a battle I lost!
And the Dark Lord – my Father
The Dark Lord- my Mother
The Dark Lord – my Master
I joined in the Void.
So, tell me, you mortals,
Who sang you this tale?
And if you remember
I’ll free you from my spell.

Oh, my Mother!
Grateful I am that you have not born me alone!
But where have my sisters and brothers all gone?
Alas!!! All my siblings met my unfortunate fate!
My fearful brothers of fire and whips
slain lie they by high walls or in deep pits.
My sisters - for light so greedy and of light so frightened -
Do you know where have they wondered?
My soul still lives
amidst of the vast Dark the fields.
And maybe one day I shall return....
Though .... you mortals have waxed -
numerous and proud under the Sun you live
and to believe in my existence and power...
even your children have ceased to believe. :(
But beware!!!
What if I came back?!
Your skies and fields I'd conquer
Disaster and demolition I'd bring
And my name you will then remember
For The black Master of Death I am!

Brothers = Balrogs
Sisters = Spiders, the spawn of Ungoliant
Since these are both Maiar, this would point to the Who being a Maiar. However, my guess is: Evil. Or possibly Darkness. The answer to the riddle doesn't seem to be something material, so this is all I could come up with.

anywho, was it Treebeard?
Inderjit S
05-22-2003, 01:40 PM
I really dont want to embarass myself, so I'll keep it short, but here goes.
First to wake I was
And long I wondered alone
No name have I that is known amongst mortal men
Yet befittingly they named me 'king'......
Rolling your eyes at my silliness eh? Well why would it be Treebeard when it contains the line;
No name have I that is known amongst mortal men
When he had a name among 'mortal men' Treebeard (Sindarnized Fangorn) and he was never reffered to as 'King'.....
You're answer is wrong, btw.
Celebthôl
05-22-2003, 01:54 PM
LOL im sowwy, its because he was the first to wake silly...accept Mr B (Tom Bombadil), but he has a name known to mortal Men and he isnt King either :( hmmm...curse you and your hard questions :(
Ancalagon
05-22-2003, 02:13 PM
I was thinking of Ulmo, but since he did not wake it could not be him. So I am thinking Finrod Felagund, whom Men knew as King Felagund...then again, they also called him Nóm, but that is not a name any more than it simply describes him especially as they did not translate Finrod Felagund in their own tongue, so his name would remain King Felagund among Men. So, I think it is King Felagund:)

Well done Nóm! The Red Book of Westmarch is the answer, bound inside it's covers are all 'these tales' of Middle-earth. The 'bearers three' are Bilbo, Frodo and Sam who took up authorship of the book at various times before taking the straight road into the west. I guess 'last preserver of the Eldar Days' threw some of you - but seeing as the Red Book is the means by which the tales of the Eldar Days were preserved and passed on to us - I think it's fair to call it so.

Sorrow lies upon our stare
looking out with deadly glare,
time stands still in shrouds of mist
forgotten now in bitterness.
Once we stood up tall and proud
our cries now drowned out by this shroud.
Shadows deepened in the night
as we departed from the light.
Yet still we dance upon the land
calling friends to hold our hand
none resist our fatal charms

Here goes!
From East to West I stand and gaze
The flowers bloomed in Eldar days.
Alone I watch, to succour those
Who's lives consist of none but woes.
The far-off shore, the stars above
Are all I have to give in love
To those who came and those who went
when at life's end, their days were spent.

I am not my brother
Who speaks with laughter shrill
Who kills without bother
Who masterless has drunk
The blood of who claimed
I am not my brother
I have slain no dragon
No Elven warrior great
Nor man troubled in despair
And I have a master
Though we are both tempered
Of the same hand and thought
I am not my brother

I hope not too easy.:)

Though noble councelour he,
A friend he ne'er would be.
A certain skill he lacked
A little thing called tact.
His tongue he would not tame
And thus he was to blame
For driving thus away
One who did not wish to stay.

Veiled going back and forth
I could be invisible, now I'm not
Never haughty rarely wroth
Out of despair I brought hope.
Yes yes I know this is horrible but I preferred making something up to just snatching a riddle off some website.

It was we who first spoke friend in stone
and often laboured most alone.
Once we trusted in others works,
until one among us worked his own.
We were many in our day
for we were greatest so they say.
Yet even for us doom found its hour
our remnant ended in Rhudaur.
Sorry, this is pretty pathetic!

Over two months, time for a new riddle.:)
Some are soft and some are hard
some shine with light some see afar
We are on the shore and in the sky
some may be found while passing by
Some are lost and some are found
but mostly we come from under ground

All I will say is that your first guess was very very close Beleg. Gems, diamonds, and seeing stones all are included (but maybe Gems is the best answer that I can expect considering my riddle:(:)) Have to go to work now will be back on the weekend(maybe sooner)
