Marlene Dietrich, this time. I just listened to "Lilli Marlen". It makes me cry each time. Especially the German version.
Kailita

I like your title, too..."Cynical Idealist". :D I'm thinking of changing mine to Reluctant Optimist eventually. ;) What's Lilli Marlen? I've never heard of that...
And great deep thought, by the way. I'm compiling a bunch of good quotes - like that one - and putting them in one of my empty notebooks. Anybody else have some good ones that I can add? Of course we can't forget "People are stupid - throw rocks at them." ;)
Arebeth

Mmm, It's a German song, sung by Marlene Dietrich and by a lot of other people... I'm sure you know it, maybe you've just forgotten the title... There is a English version that's great too.
I have a lot of quotes in my notebooks and almost in every place one can possibly write... Is there a thread fpr good quotes somewhere?
Kailita
10-29-2003, 09:28 PM
Hmmm...if there isn't, there should be. For now this is the best place to put them, since this thread really doesn't have a specific topic. But maybe if we had enough quotes, we could make a thread..."Outcast Quotes and Sayings to Live By", perhaps? ;)
Arebeth

Yay! I support the idea!!!
Ahem.
My problem is: I know a lot of quotes in French, and when I try to translate them... Well, it's not exactly that.
And most of the time I've forgotten the authors.
"To know all is not to forgive all. It is to despise everybody."
"Remember the ones you've left behind."
"Until you've lost your reputation, you never realize what a burden it was."
"Never let your sens of morals get in the way of doing what's right."
"It is better to have loved and lost than never to have lost at all."
"You're looking for Good and you don't find it. You find Evil and you're not looking for it." (Bad translation)
"One can only be free as long as he is alone; who doesn't love loneliness doesn't love freedom, because you're only free when you're alone." (another bad translation)
"Wha's Eternity but a story that will never end, and what's an immortal but the character who's trapped in this story?" (well, I won't repeat it all the time)
"I have no friends, pnly servants, and they call me: Your Highness."
(I must say I love the last one:D )

I love quotes :D
Some of my old Deep Thoughts may fit in here:
Not everything that counts can be counted; not everything that can be counted counts. - Albert Einstein
The object of our Faith is not a Proposition, but a Person - St. Thomas Aquinas
Imagination is more important than knowledge - Albert Einstein
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. - Albert Einstein
(I have a lot of Einstein quotes ;) )
We should take care not to make the intellect our god; it has, of course, powerful muscles, but no personality. - Einstein
Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind. - Einstein
That's enough for now :D

I was born on Einstein's birthday, Eriol ;)
One of my favorite quotes is actually a riddle: "The giant Grof was struck in one eye by a stone, and that eye was turned inward so that it looked into his mind, and he died of what he saw there." - the wonderful The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia McKillip (the answer to the riddle is what the giant saw).

Good, good! International quotes, Einstein quotes, riddle quotes. :D If we can get enough, we can make our own thread. And thank you for contributing, Eriol - our Outcast-who-isn't. ;)
I like: "It's good to be on the right track, but if you're going to get run over if you just sit there."
and
"It is never too late to be what you might have been."
and
"Hope is hearing the music of the future and faith is having the courage to dance to it."

Arebeth...your new avatar is the evil queen from Snow White. She used to scare me out of my nighties when I was a kid. But, then again, you're the one who always sympathizes with the bad guys, aren't you...;)
Anyway, yeah, that just caught my attention and I was curious as to if it held any significance.

I LOVE the evil queen! I can't stand Snow White, but the evil queen is so cool! I love the avatar ;) the significance for me is that my sister is the evil queen- it started because she's talked to the mirror ever since she was little. And then when we were stuck in the Bombay Co. because of a tornado warning, she was talking to the mirrors in couplets...it was hysterical.

LOL, my girlfriend and her room-mates at college all claimed one of the three most popular princesses of disney. My girlfriend was Cinderella(Funny because I had made a song/poem about a Cinderella without midnight, almost as if we were meant to be together:D ), the others were Snow White and Sleeping Beauty:rolleyes: .

Exactly.:D I've always loved her. Remember my dream part is Lady Macbeth.;) (though I enjoy playing Ophelia, or Cecily from the Importance of Being Earnest.) Anyway, when I was a kid the people at school teased me by calling me "Snow-White" because, well, I happen to be pale. I wanted a revenge.

Okay, in my pathetic attempt to revitalize the GOO, I am posting in this thread even though I have nothing very interesting or important to say in hopes that those few of us that are left will have a more interesting topic to 'chat' about. Anybody??
Let's see.. I've been working on my English and History projects for the past couple days because I've been putting it off all break long. I got back from my trip a few days ago, which was really fun.. we went to the beach.. yeah.. Umm, I am not looking forward to going back to school after the break is over.
Okay.. does anybody else have a more interesting life than I do? Come on, that can't be hard to beat. My life is fairly pathetic.

ok, well, um, my ppls have been sort of.... re-doing my room. not completely, actually it's more like we're adding on to it. my dad knocked down a wall and expanded my room out about 2 or 3 feet, which may not seem like a lot, but the room really looks bigger. recently I got a new bed (not really new, just new to me) and I am supposed to get new quilts and sheets for it by the 16th. I lso need new carpet(since the room was expanded onto a hardwood area, now there is unstained hardwood on part of my floor) right now my carpet is a sort of hideous mauve that my mom must have picked out when I was five. I'm going to get a sort of soft royal blue carpet. also, some of my walls need to be painted, and since the rest of my room is sky blue w/ clouds, I thought it would be cool to paint the other side dark blue and splatter paint it with glow-in-the-dark or flourescent paint, so there would be a day side and a night side to my room, we were also thinking about moving my bed to the night side.I also get to get rid of my ugly old dresser bc we are elfa-izing (elfa (http://www.elfa.com/index.cfm?sprakid=2) is a company whose merchandise is maily for organizing closets, garages and entertainment centers and such, and they help you set up a plan. it's really cool and helpful actually)my closet and putting all my clothes in there.
I think that's about all we're doing to my room, but I have to sort out all my stuff into what I do and don't want to keep...

You know, Dragon,
When I was younger, I once made an astronomy project for the science fair that I wanted to use as a model for decorating my room, until it got thrown out by a parent, of course!
What I'd done was build a rectangular outer-space cube, open on one side. It was covered in black construction paper inside and out. The outside had designs of galaxies, comets, and stars in metallic glitter of gold, silver, and bronze. Inside, I hung up on fishing line styrofoam balls of the planets, painted in flourescent glow-in-the-dark colors to match the colors of each world from Mercury to Pluto according to the astronomy books.
Imagine having an entire bedroom like that ... walls painted black, covered with flourescent-painted or metallically reflective stars, comets, planets, and maybe a model shuttle or satellite hanging around. Then all's you need is ultraviolet light bulbs, and you're all set! :) :D :p
Something to make Elbereth proud, eh? * grin *
Now though, all's I use the bedroom for is for sleeping. Turns out I spend a lot of time on the road, always discovering one adventure or another.

That sounds exciting, Dragon. The whole night/day thing sounds really cool, especially the glow-in-the-dark paint!
We re-decorated my room a few years ago. It was fun, I like re-decorating. We put up a shelf about a foot from the ceiling which runs all around my room, which is nice, and more shelving can never be a bad thing. And I got new wallpaper (thank God), and a new bed (mine was soo old, it used to be my dad's when he was a kid) and such.
Last year we thought about re-carpeting my room.. my carpet is very old and an ugly dingy-gray color.. but I thought it would be too much trouble just for new carpet (my desk is very big, and would've had to be taken apart in order to fit out of the room.. and then I would've had to clean out the whole thing.. which could quite possibly have taken forever).
When you mentioned sorting your things.. that reminded me how much I need to clean out my closet.. I have so much junk on the top shelf that whenever I try to get something from it, everything just comes tumbling down. It's quite painful. My mother calls me a pack-rat, but (except for my closet, maybe) I actually think I'm quite neat, compared to some people, at least.
Well, good luck on your project, Dragon. I hope everything turns out great. :)
Dragon
01-06-2004, 10:38 PM
my old bed and my current dresser are both very old too. they're wooden (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) but they are all scratched up and creaky, and just plain not pretty.. also, I will have a lot more...room...in my room, which is great.
that sounds amazing, gandalf. my mom wont let me paint my whole room black, or even dark blue, she says it makes the room look too dark. what if I like dark rooms?... hmm... planets... that would be great... maybe I could hang planets on the night side of my room? :D

I've made a few little redecorating plans for my room also. I'm painting my ugly closet either green or blue (my room is green and blue). The closet is really big.. it takes up a whole wall.. but it's this ugly off-white color that I've hated forever. I've just gotten permission to paint it.:) Also I'm putting 2 more shelves on the wall for books. I finally cleaned out my closet today (there were 3 really big storage boxes full of junk from my closet) and I went on a little cleaning spree (I do this occasionally), which is what made me want to do this stuff. Nothing big, but it will keep me busy over the weekend.

And getting ready to participate in the Chronicles of Ea restart at the ME RPG (JOIN! JOIN! JOIN!).
I've been approached about joining the Chronicles of Ea via PM, but personally feel better suited to other storylines ... that's just me ... From what I've seen, an incredible amount of high-quality time and effort has gone into setting up the Chronicles! :)
Instead, I've gotten together in PM's with a couple of other people over at MERPG, and am in the planning stages of setting up a different RPG. The premise, suggested by Lhunithiliel in a public brainstorming thread, has to do with the fall of a Man into corruption by wielding one of the Nine Rings.
To that, being a strong believer in forging RPG adventures in which each and every participant can enjoy a rewarding experience in their own right (rather than merely propping up a story built around someone else's character) ... I've added a full-blown quest with plenty of chances to win fame and fortune in an attempt to rescue Elves and Men who've been disappearing along the Great West Road near Fenmarch, Mering Stream, Firien Wood ... located in that part of Gondor near North Ithilien. Mysterious monsters and tantalizing treasure guaranteed, along with the drama of having one of the members of the company undergo the process of becoming a wraith before your very eyes.
Special Invitation hereby goes out to my fellow Outcasts to apply to this RPG when it opens for business, for I see much talent among you. :)

I've never gotten to decorate my room before, because we've always rented, but we ended up buying a house here. My room had nasty faux wood paneling, which we just painted over. Three walls bright white, and one wall bright blue splattered with darker blue- I watered down the paint and kind of dabbed it on. It went everywhere. Watered down maybe a tad too much...Oopsie...But it still looks good. My room is bright blue and royal purple, which sounds really odd but it looks good. I have a big purple sheet tacked to the ceiling over my bed like a canopy.

Okay, so my mom is already planning our family's summer vacation (she also starts Chirstmas-shopping in July  ) and she keeps asking me what I would like to do.. only I don't know! Ah well, the family didn't seem to like the Georgia idea. They thought there wouldn't be enough to do there for a week and plus it'd be a really long drive so our dog wouldn't be able to come. And my dog has to come. I'm not going anywhere without my dog. (Oh, yeah, my hamster has to come too :)) But they were thinking of getting a cabin somewhere in West Virginia or Pennsylvania, which sounds okay to me, as long as we'll get to do some hiking, horseback riding, white water rafting, and other stuff. It's not for sure yet though. My brother has suddenly become obsessed with "roughing it" and he wants to live in the wilderness for a week doing things like gutting his own fish and stuff.. ew. Camping is okay with me, as long as there's a shower, or I don't have to go too long without one. (This summer I went 3 days without a shower while camping, it was awful.) But my mom's a bit of a wimp, so we'll definately be staying at a cabin instead of the middle of nowhere, which is good with me. My brother can disappear the whole week and camp on his own for all I care. Sounds like a plan to me. :)

Ooh, west virginia is awsome! I went to this place called Ace whitewater and aventure or something , it was awsome, we rafted down the new river(which is actually one of the oldest rivers in the world), besides the ice cold rain which felt like hail it was great. We went up to Alaska for my sister's graduation. We took about 10 days and drove through mostly the southern part of it. It was in may and there was still mountains with snow on them coming all the way down to the road. It was so awsome, it looked exactly like it was from LotR. One time we even ran up part of the mountain in the waist high snow(I live in Florida, we don't get snow that much ;) :( ). The parts around Valdez are exceptionally beautiful, but I highly doubt that any of you will be in that area any time soon.

Ahh, that does not sound like fun.
But I'm looking forward to my next camping experience.. and sleeping under the stars every night.. they are so much brighter in the mountains, out in the middle of nowhere, compared to where I live, in the suburbs.
I'm starting to get restless, as I usually do by the middle/end of winter. Fall is very busy for me, because of the cross-country season and the beginning of the school year, and during the beginning of winter I really enjoy the break. But now.. I'm counting down the days until spring.. when I can go running (and get back in shape..) and walk my dog and go on bike rides. It's weird because that's what I seem to be thinking about half the time. Yeah, I probably could go running (but it's cold), but I can't walk my dog, unless it's on the side of the road (which isn't very nice) because of the snow which comes up to her poor elbows. Besides, I'm a wimp when it comes to cold weather. Anyway, I don't know why I'm rambling on about this, just thought I'd share..

Ah, I understand the feeling. Well, sort of. I love winter and cold weather, I really do, every bit; I'm this close to writing a poem about the beauty of bare trees and brown grass. However, due to the low temperatures, I nearly got frostbite from a run and I only went a mile and a half. Thus, I'm forced inside, working out on the gym and hoping it warms up to twenty degrees F so I can escape the confines of this house.
And as someone who lives in the middle of nowhere, I can say the stars do look lovely and bright, but after a while you wish for just a little 'light pollution'(also known as maybe a streetlight of two) so that you don't worry about wrecking on the way home.
In other exciting news, Jam has just scored the role of the Duke in drama club's production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' western-style!

All you special lucky peoples...being in all these cool places and travelling around to see more cool places. I leave California twice a year, both times to go to Texas (at Christmas and in the summer) to see relatives. I compliment Texas on its clouds and its stars...and now I keep my mouth shut. I will not say a single word about the flatness, dryness, humidity, or the rampant southern accents. ;) Other than that, I've been to the evil F-word (Florida) once. I've been to Mexico once. I've been to Las Vegas once. I think I may have been to New Mexico once, but I was a baby, so that doesn't count. And other than that, I have never seen any land outside of little old CA.
Okay, now random question: Umm, what have they done to everything? I'm finally able to see pictures and avatars again...yay! But everything is all different and stuff. (The smiley faces are blue... ) Not that I'm complaining...it just takes some getting used to. Around when did all these changes occur, and why? Can someone fill me in?

It's an upgrade, she said archly. We're moving up in the world, which apparently envolves frost-bitten emoticons
I don't like cold and brown grass and ice on my windshield in the wee hours of the morning when I have to go to lit class, but I do love bare trees. There's something deeply moving and poetic intrinsic in the sight of tracings of black branches against a grey sky.
Today I need to write 4000 words. Visit to coffee house is in order. But first, a shower. And then tonight, watching Labyrinth (I have really never seen Labyrinth before) while rotting my insides with junk food and drinking Diet Coke with Lime through a Twizzler. Ah, the decadence.

I agree- there is something awe-inspiring about winter trees, but they also seem depressing. And after a few months I get sick of them, and crave the greeness and liveliness of spring. Well, apparently the groundhog saw his shadow today (Happy Groundhog's Day everyone:)), as it seems he does every year, and a long winter is predicted. Oh joy.

I really love all the seasons...they're all so unique. But I have a deep appreciation for autumn and winter, just because here in sunny California we hardly get much of either. Spring usually comes around March for us. I love the blue skies and flowers...but I miss the comforting gray of winter and the cozy nights where you can snuggle up with a blanket and hot chocolate.
