Where are you in the fabric of society?
Are you a geek?
Below the geeks? (Guilty)
Neighborhood psycho? (Guilty)
Prep?
Jock?
Smart aleck?
Teacher's pet?
Other?

Where can we go in this thread after everyone has answered the question? Anyways, out of those options and assuming that this person mostly means our social standing with people around our own age, I'd have to go with ---> Smart aleck. Mostly because I don't know what you're view of a geek is and I wouldn't know what below a geek might mean and I can't think of an Other right now.
The-Elf-Herself

Um, I'm an Other. I'm a complete outcast, I don't fit into any group that well, due to the fact that with a little bit of tact and some acting I can fit into pretty much ANY group and make them think that that's who I am. Sort of like a social chameleon. So basically, to paraphrase a Tree I'm not on anyone's side because no one is on my side. Or in anyone's group for that matter. I'm uniquely myself.

I am a just-below-the-geeks English Geek. Not a science/math/computer programmer geek, a poetry/literature/drama/art geek, which is v. different. I have been a teacher's pet, but only for teachers I liked (Lit teacher, drama teacher, etc.)
Kailita

What in the world is an aleck? (As in smart aleck...I've always wondered that...:rolleyes: )
Umm, at the risk of labeling myself (gasp! :eek: ), I would say that I could probably be classified with the geeks, but it depends on your definition. If it's anti-social, I'm there. Yes, I get As in all my classes...yes, I think that pep rallies are stupid and achingly boring...yes, I'd rather read than go to the float meeting...yes, I boycott school dances...do you have a problem with that? :p But, as Rhi so eloquently put it, I'm not so much a science/math/computer programmer geek as a poetry/literature/drama/art geek. Whatever. It's fun. :D
I could probably also be classified as the locker hall psycho. I'm pretty mellow in my neighborhood. But in the locker hall at school I'm the one screeching in foreign languages and kicking at my locker or desperately trying to fit just one more bottle in my locker without everything collapsing on me. Hey, I don't ask for the attention...but people seem to think that what I do is strange, so they stare. Not my fault. :rolleyes:

Where's the option for tired old geezer who refuses to mow his lawns?(or does that make me the neighbourhood psycho?) OK I'm a smart aleck(euphemism for ass).
Kailita
06-01-2003, 05:54 PM
Ahh, got it, thanks for clearing that up, Sador. I don't see how that makes sense either, though. I mean...if you have/are a smart ass...how does that make you witty and sarcastic? :confused: I think it was just some person wanting to be profane...and then other people changed it to "aleck" because they liked the meaning but didn't want to be vulgar. *Shrugs*
HG, you are a potato! :D
I also want to know what exactly is the hierarchy of social standing. And what's below the geeks? Of course, this may vary between schools and towns...but that's okay, I'm just curious.

Potatoes are below geeks? Hmm...interesting...
I'm still finding out the social hierarchy at my school. I think it depends on who you ask. The football players are definitely at the top. We have a little town with a very good football team, so the football players are like gods. And I guess the cheerleaders are up there too, but they don't seem to be as popular as the field hockey chicks. Our girls' field hockey team is very good, I guess. :rolleyes: Umm...basically, if you play a sport, you're up there.
Then are the outgoing ASB type people. The presidents and secretaries and treasurers of the clubs, the talkative people, the overachievers. Along with them are the preps (which we define as fairly rich people with designer clothes and snobby attitudes) and the pretty people. Funny how pretty people, no matter what group they belong to, always seem to climb the social ladder so quickly. Hmm. Then the "normal" people fit in around there.
Then are the punks. The punks are making a rise in popularity, all of a sudden, probably due to Avril Lavigne and other so-called punk people become popular. Then below them are the punk-goths, then the goths. I guess they're respected because they're different...and kind of creepy.
Then are the geeks, the nerds, the anti-social Outcasts of society. :D Us! We're right down there with the potheads and the Mexican gangsters (not meant in a racist way at all - I'm half Mexican! :D - but most of our gangsters are Mexican...). But that's just my school. I know it's got to be different in other places. C'mon, I want some examples of other social ladders...this kind of stuff interests me...

That school hierarchy (it`s so good when I don`t have to guess the spelling:D) is disgusting. It really is.
Answering the question: Other.
I`m not a geek, not a smart aleck or anything. I`m by myself. Well, if you speak of social hierarchy in general I`m the granddaughter of a very famous Armenian poet who will live in centuries:D:rolleyes:. So my <position> is in some way exceptional:rolleyes: I get along well with people. The sad thing is I don`t feel like I belong anywhere:( On the other thought that`s not sad at all. Actually that`s the best:D
Kailita

You are exceptional, Shush. I know where you belong. You belong with us! Here in GOO where we LOVE you! :D
School hierarchy is disgusting. But it fascinates me...I'd love to study it. (Being at the bottom of the ladder, I see things that normal/popular people don't. :rolleyes: ) Why some people are above others and why some people are accepted just because of who they hang around or how they dress or what they look like...the shallow, undeveloped mind of some highschoolers amazes me.
Dragon

heirarchy??? well....I guess u could call it that:rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes: more like backwards land:rolleyes: how come the smartest people (geeks)are placed at the bottom of the ladder, and the idiotic sports people are at the top??? its not like they can really do anything but provide entertainment:rolleyes:
Kailita
06-04-2003, 04:58 AM
Because, D...the sports people promote the school and are therefore special. I guess. :rolleyes: I'm not quite sure...like I said, I'm still figuring all that out. I actually have some friends in sports that are quite smart. I also know some people in sports who are quite...not. :rolleyes: So...I don't know...you have to judge people by individuals. How does the ladder go at your school, D? You go to a middle school, right?

Yes indeed, it is. But I have no problem with being at the "bottom of the ladder". Referring to the "ladder", I mean social standing, where I fit in as far as "status" goes. And I know I'm at the bottom. :D I'm certainly not popular, though I'm pretty outgoing. But I have no wish to work my way up the ladder. I like being at the bottom. That's where all the interesting people are. Most of the people at the top are, as you said, achingly shallow and stupid. Either that or they're interesting people who stifle themselves and stunt their abilities because they're too worried about what other people are going to think about them. And in that case they're just silly.
But...yes. I'm perfectly content with my social standing. Because we at the bottom have our own criteria of what makes someone "cool" or not. And on that list, we're at the top. :D

its ok... no one who's not in a montessori school knows what one is:rolleyes:
maria montessori; italian lady, wants 2 b an engineer, but in italy at her time, only boys r permitted into engineering schools, so her parents petition a school, and they let her in, b/c she has exceptionally good grades....she graduates, gets a good career, but doesnt' like it, she wants 2 work w/ people so, she goes through a diferent school, and becomes a doctor, somehow, one of her (teacher) friends got her to sort of, uh....substitute a class 4 her, and she figured, hey, this is for me, so she became a teacher, but she believed in teaching kids diferent ways, that, they all learn at their own pace, and learn in different ways (visual, kinetic, auditory) and that communities are stronger than individuals, so at montessori schools (named after her, her concept:rolleyes: )we work a lot in groups, but also r allowed 2 choose our own works, as long as we get certain things done, we have had workplans since kindergarten, so we learn how to manage our time:rolleyes: get along w/ people, and learn to identify w/ what helps us learn better:rolleyes: apparently, according to our teachers, we are only slightly smarter than people that go to "normal" schools (academically) but we have the thinking skills to get along well in "life"
personally, I'm a bit skeptical, but i do believe I'm smarter than everyone else:rolleyes:

Hey! I'm homeschooled too! And yes, we are the most anti-social, at least around "normal public school" kids. I've always had issues with being in a public school, even when I had to go to one in elementary school. I got into all kinds of trouble for not listening to the teacher(honestly, I had already read past what she was discussing) and showing disrespect(alright, so I like to roll my eyes. People should lighten up and realize I'm not dissing them, I'm dissing what they're saying because I think it's foolish). I went to the local high school to get working papers and I started having symptons akin to claustrophobia. I guess I'm just too independent, the idea of having to go from class to class on a set schedule that never changes would drive me nuts. The very idea makes me uneasy. *has enormous amounts of respect for outcasts who can survive in public school*

*Bows* :D It's tough...but feasible, with the right mindset. Jam, I think it would be loads of fun to have a friend like you in public school with me. It's something you have to adjust to...and that's really hard when homeschool is all you've ever known...but when public school is all you've ever known, it's a lot easier. Yeah, the schedules are annoyances sometimes. But you get used to them. And everyone around you is sharing your pain, too. And it's easy to get claustrophobic (especially at my highschool...3000 kids!), but in a way, I thrive off the claustrophobia. I get all seclusive and lonerish...and that's probably not good, but that's when I'm most observant, and I notice a lot of things about the people around me. And not listening and being disrespectful is very possible and loads of fun...you just have to know how to do it without getting caught. :rolleyes:;) And I could teach you all that. *Is Queen of behind-teacher's-back antics*

Yep! Gotta love Outcast stubbornness! Yeah, I'm sure I might be able to cope with your school in theory Kai, especially if you were in attendence, but it would be tough out here. I would have to say that I am this one, and you all know the person at your school like it....
I am the anti-social, has two friends and is happy with that, creates a bubble around them of ten feet or more on either side at lunch by their presense alone, all black with chains earrings dyed hair zippers and jingles etc wearing, gothic music listening to, head phones always on, ignore the teachers and still pass with A's and B's, art teacher's pet and greatest student ever, out-standing poet/english student, gothic artist. come on, you all know me because I am EVERYWHERE!!! you can't escape me because there are so many of me that you will all have seen one of me in the first week of school I can almost guarentee it!!! What's more... I am the only one at my school so I get to be extra special. but now I only have one friend because my best friend left this past year and that makes me tres miserables... Also I am a bit of a geek because I know more about the comp than anyone I know excepting my mother(comp engineer) and my friend Jess(uber geek extrodinare), but other than that... I am the super intelligent one everyone hates, but tries to be friendly with so they will do their work for them one too, but I am the mean one everyone really hates because I don't do work for people and if they ask me for the answers, I'll give them the answers.... the WRONG ones!!! muahahahahahahahahaha

Oooooh! Goths! Huzzah! *Laughs insanely* I scare them, I think. It's funny I guess, I mean, I'll go right up and just look at them and they know that even though I look like a normal person, I'm as outcasted as they are, even more, and I'm not intimidated by them or scared of them, I just see them as another person.
YayGollum
07-06-2003, 04:21 AM
Those crazy types are trying to scare or intimidate people? Why are they not considered evil for that? Yikes! Delighting in the fear of others, even if that wasn't your main goal, sounds pretty evil to me. *sniff* oh well. Maybe they just pretend to not care if other people are afraid. I don't know. They don't care, but they expect it? I don't know. just wondering. Wait. Does the The_elf_Herself person want to scare the poor Goth types? :eek: :rolleyes:
Well there's all kinds of goths and maybe some want to scare people, but many do not.
I never consider myself a goth but others have, and I might have intimidated some people in my time but I never intended to. Yet I am not the kind who wears all sorts of really crazy things. I guess people have said I am goth only because I wear a lot of black... I do not wear marlyn manson make-up or blue hair. I rather not call attention to myself. Honestly I am not sure what the definition of 'goth' is supposed to be. I've heard people argue over it.
For example, you have the punkish sorts of goths, and then the little marylin manson type of goths, and then the (often older) more sophisticated kinds of goths.
As for my social standing, I wouldn't really put me in any catagory but I suppose maybe a bit of a bad girl type of geek, if there is such a thing? Really I am mostly an outcast because I am very reserved, find small talk to be absurd, find most people's conversation boring, and rather go to a library or in the park than go to a bar like most people my age. Rather watch something on Discovery channel than MTV.

Well, if that's your definition of a Goth, then I've been one for a while and never knew it. oh well. That's cool. Black is one of my favorite colors. Wearing dark colors is the best. Why make people think that you're normally bright and cheery? Ick. *collapses* :rolleyes:
I don't really have a definition of it, and I think most people base it on the way a person is dressed. I have friends who count themselves as goths, and from what I have seen a lot of them regard it as being anti-social, far from the normal, and having a gloomy outlook... seeing the dark and sad side of everything.
I wouldn't say you are a goth, Yay. But then I wouldn't say anyone is unless they claim to be.
The-Elf-Herself
07-06-2003, 01:42 PM
No, I don't scare them on purpose, it's just a side effect and it's not so much scare as weird out. My cousin and a lot of her friends are goths and they're used to people being scared of them/reacting to them based on how they dress or carry themselves, so they find in strange that someone sort of hippy-dippy average looking person like me can go up and just strike up a conversation with them, not giving a fig for how they look.

The only place I have ever seen a Goth in full regalia is at a renaissance faire. I have known one or two people who didn't get in to any kind of get-up but definintely considered themselves to be Goth. I've never thought of myself as Goth, though every once in a while someone will tell me that I'm 'kind of Goth'. My voice coach in Japan told me I as 'dark' (and that because I was dark I would appreciate Dorothy Parker- and I do).

I guess we don't have Goths here in Armenia. People stare at others whenever they see a pierced nose or something. My knowledge of them is restricted by the Hollywood movies and stuff.
What about tatoos? Cause there was a time when I wanted to have one just to show people that I don`t care. But it never happened cause a tatoo wouldn`t go with my face. Or with the expresion on my face. But I still desperately want one:(
And MTV is outrageous. This word has a negative meaning, right? Some time ago I was watching something called - date tailers or tail-daters. All they were talking about was how big the girls' breasts were. Really strange:confused:

Yeah I hate MTV. I only watch VHI for music videos and always change the channel when rap or pop comes on. Don't get me wrong... I like European and Asian pop and rap, but not American... blah!
I am very nice on here, yay. much nicer than I am in real life, trust me there. You can ask Goldie, if you wish, but I don't get to see her that often since she changed high schools... *tear* I almost always take the darker look on life because it is more fun. Most people try to look on the 'bright' side, so I counter them in every arguement in classes/halls/etc with the 'dark' side. It is great seeing the expressions on their faces. Like once, someone was talking about this cute gas-station guy they wanted to date, and all her friends were going on about all the 'good' things that could happen if she did go out with him. So I was sitting in front of my locker and heard them... Then I pip up, "Or he could rape and kill you!" I said it so loudly the whole hall could hear it and it was at lunch so a quarter of the school was in that specific hall. The look on that girl's face was priceless, cause she just stared at me and knew I didn't care two cents what happened to her if she did go out with him. She could tell that because I said my piece and immediately buried my face back in my copy of 'Dune'... Muaahahahahaha I love tormenting the preppy, 'popular' people...

Sounds like fun, but that would mean I would have to plaster Preppy notecards on all but like five people in my bloody school!!! and that wouldn't be fun...

*cringes* Yikes, scary Annushka person! Why would you want a tattoo anywhere on you? Especially your face. It hurts when you get them. Why allow pain to happen when it's easily avoidable? Why pay someone to hurt you? Ick. Makes no sense. Anyways, Yay for being nice and polite with the Outcasts, crazy Arathin person. But then, from that example, I wouldn't call you an especially dark minded person. You're just disappointed with the human race and having fun with messing with them. Happens all the time.

Who said anything about a tatoo on my face!!!????? Am I crazy??? I`m not!!! That was scary, Yay. Anyway, some people agree that having anything on your body is not very healthy and nice. And I`m sure it's not possible to make a tattoo with anesteology (sp). So I guess, I`ll never have a one. No big deal.

Oh yes. I've been meaning to post in here for quite a while.
There are two different kinds of Gothic.
Gothic, according to my Webster's New World College Dictionary, 4th Edition ---> of or having to do with the Germanic people that invaded and conquered most of the Roman Empire; a sinister/eerie atmosphere to suggest horror and mystery.
Then Gothic as you'll hear it used in school ---> People who dress all in black, believe life is pointless, usually wrapped up in depression/apathy, and go out of their way to be outcasted. Or that is the generalized highschool definition of goth, anyway. You also have your punk-goths, who are a whole different story.
Personally, I have nothing against goths, though I think that they must be living a pretty sad lifestyle. I'd love to offer them some hope. Hardcore goths usually have very deep minds, but they're just so buried in their angst that they can't see any beauty. I don't want to scare them or bother them or "fix" them...I just want to make them smile.
You don't sound especially Gothic to me, Arathin. Just Outcasted. Welcome to the club. :)
I'm way too soft when it comes to giving out answers. :rolleyes: I've gotten a little better at it. But mostly I'll just give people the answers they need as long as they leave me alone.
Who is Dorothy Parker, Rhi? :confused:
I would never get a tattoo, just because I'm horribly frightened of needles and pain. :o:rolleyes: But I don't have anything against people who have them or want to get them. MTV is...interesting. And that's all I have to say about that. :rolleyes: Our culture is so messed up.
The preppy card is glooooorious. One of our better ideas. All will bow and grovel to the sacred PREPPY card...:D

Dorothy Parker is an writer and poet from the roaring 20s- she's cynical, dark, and brilliant. I love her. One of her most famous is this one:
Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.
And my favorite, her wonderful, hysterical essay The Little Hours (http://www.empyrean.ca/words/littlehr.html) - I was on a bus when I read it for the first time, and everyone was staring at me.

I plan on getting a Tolkien tattoo at least. but I have already planned out several others, a few tolkien-esque, a few not. I like pain, makes me know I'm alive still, which can be depressing, but at least, if I am alive I can still torment other people's existances.
I am also outcast for the music i listen to... I mean I mix David Bowie, H.O.T. (wonderful Korean band, go get their music), Marlyn Manson, Moonspell, Midnight Syndicate, etc, etc, etc... mercilessly. I play my music like really loud, so people can hear it despite my headphones, and they all look at me like I am crazy when the music goes from "Full Moon Madness" by Moonspell, to "The Death Song" by Manson, to "Vampire's Kiss" by Midnight Syndicate, to "I-yah" by H.O.T. tis great

D, I don't know who La Roch-thing is either, but the context was enough for me to still split my sides over it.
