Gulps, closes eyes, slowly raises hand.
I'll do it sir! Just don't blame me if we do really badly! What are we debating on first of all?
OK, two members is just not good enough....:(
C'mon people (aragil, DGoeij, Ramagna, menchu and the rest) , your Guild needs you!!!
And Yay! to Tookish for setting an example for the rest of you.

I would, but I'm off on holiday on Saturday for two weeks
Good luck!!
It won't start for at least another week, and will run for several weeks. I'll add you to the list :D

What is involved in this task?
I have some time for the first time in weeks and I might be able to help?
But, I'm only willing to do this if I'm able to sneer at the half-baked flimsy lines of sub-thought masquerading as argument put forth by Lost-n-Addled, or whatever they're called!;) (j/k ... sort of!)
Well, you can either debate for the Periaur in the tournament, host a debate between other Guilds in the tournament (start up debate thread, come up with a debate topic, keep an eye on the debate, start judging thread, arrange judges, submit results to the tournament co-ordinator), or PM tit-bits of advice to the debators.

Well I'll happily be in the Periaur debating team. I have a clear mind and a sharp tongue.
I don't mind judging as well.
Let me know what's the best way I can help.

I of course will do what I can. I have never been a strong debator...I get tired of reading multiple quotes and trying to come up with something clever and original in response.
But I will fully support the Guild of Periaur in all it's efforts. We must show the rest of the forum that we are just as intellectual as they are...even if we do have more of a life and don't have time to debate the finer details of tolkien's works. (At least that is my excuse for not debating more often ;) )
*please forgive me for the un-leader-like response in this thread...I am posting this at 4am...and it seems that all of my recent posts have been filled with sarcasm and cynicism. Sorry guys...* :(
Do you realise that we have the best debating record out of all the Guilds?
2 wins from 2 debates; a 100% winning record!
legoman
04-09-2003, 05:03 PM
I would but I'm pants and I'm weak. The only arguements I win are the ones where I completely outwith the opponent with a silly comment.
Oh, unless its on guitars, then I can just about hold my own.
But I will stand just slightly behind you all with a coloured scarf with all of your names (its a long scarf) knitted in - I'll get my grandma right onto it...

Elbe, you'll have to make sure that we have 4 debaters for each Debate, and that the debaters post in the Debate.
We also need a volenteer to host a neutral Debate.
Snaga- I'm looking at you ;)
Here is the Periaur team for the Round 1 debate against the Scholars Guild:
-Elbereth
-Wonko the Sane

I dont' mean to be ignoring the guild or the debate...but I'm having serious issues with my computer at the momment...(read the thread in the member announcements about the new computer virus that is going around...because I think I have it...grrr).
So I may not be able to come on for awhile.
Hopefully I will have this resolved soon...otherwise, I wish you all good luck.

I don't really feel qualified to participate in this debate since I don't have UT...
And I have no idea what is said in there.
But...hmm.
I'll go and see if I can offer anything based on what the debate says.
Sorry guys. :(
Elbereth
05-21-2003, 05:23 AM
Don't worry about that Wonko...I didn't get any of my evidence from the UT...only from LOTR...there is plenty of info in the Appendices to keep up a strong argument. Don't get discouraged.
Legolam
05-21-2003, 02:13 PM
Hey Wonks, don't tell anyone, but I haven't read UT all the way through yet either! Just pick holes in their arguments (there's lots!).

I would like to take this time to apologize for my poor contribution to the debate earlier. , Looking back, I realize that it should have never been posted...and ultimately made us look more foolish (or at least me).
My only excuse is that I was very tired last night when I posted...and my mind was not clear. With that said...I am officially throwing in my towel. You do not need me jumping in making everyone look like fools. :(
Good Luck Periaur!
I have complete faith that you can beat those Scholars! ;)
I can understand you wanting to drop out, Elbereth. I hope you will take part in later debates though. This is the first Tolkien debate I have seen you take part in. I don't know how many you have joined in the past, but even more experienced of us make mistakes, and if you still wish to try again I hope that you will. I posted the question without even noticing that Dul Guldur was spelled incorrectly. :o
Many of us have felt that we have made a fool of ourself (me... many times!). All I can do is encourage people to keep in mind that it happens to everyone else, and most others will not see you as being a fool for it, and if they do and speak of it, then they are being worse than a fool.
Going against Maedhros, is admirable in itself, in my eyes. He both knows the works better, and is a better debator than most anyone who officially debates Tolkien at TTF, in the opinion of many. Some think he is the best. That is a darn good team over at GoS, and you guys are putting up well against them (without giving away too much, since I am to be a judge!:D).
Other business too. Ithrynluin who was a member of the GoS team, no longer is, so if you are dropping out of the team for this debate, I'd like to make a small announcement of that in the debate thread. Just to make it official that the debate will continue with teams of 3.
Wonko The Sane
05-22-2003, 10:32 PM
I think the debate is going quite well, Maedhros IS good, but Snaga...wow. He's doing so well.
I'm so proud of him!
And of everyone. :) You guys...Maedhros is good...but I think we stand a good chance of beating him. :)

I promised to post yesterday...but TTF went down.
I promise to post soon. Very soon. :)
Before the end date at least. ;)
You had better: there's only just over a day left!
And it gets even better: we're against the Tolkienologists next week!
Oh well, once the two better Guilds are out of the way, it should get easier (Until the reverse rubbers)...
Yay! The debate is finally over :D
Well played Snaga, Legolam and Elbereth. You've made your Guild proud.

I'm sorry I didn't post.
I read the Quest for Erebor, and I read the debate thread twice.
But I didn't feel like I could contribute anything.
I mean, the things I would have said had been said by Snaga or Legolam etc. already.
And the last thing I wanted to do was to be a detriment to our team by posting things that DIDN'T help or that were misinformed. :(
I'm sorry.

I'll do better next time...I'm sorry.

It will be a pleasure to meet you, young schollars! :D
We also look forward to debating against the honourable Tolkienologists.

Hey...when is the "main squad" coming out?
Commom! Put some "fire" into the debate :p :D
And Aule, please, clean up your PM-box :)
The Periaur are currently appealing to Arvedui that the topic be changed.
We think it's amazingly unfair, and Anamatar has said that the Tolkienologists would also prefer a more ambigious topic.
I know that you guys have been having fun stating the obvious, but we basically have NOTHING to say in response. :(

06-06-2003, 05:15 PM
I've just read through the debate thread and it seems to be descending into a huge brawl. Now, I happen to agree with Aule that the topic is a horrendous one. I don't know who thought it would be a good one to debate, but they were obviously having a laugh. HOWEVER, surely the mark of a great debater is taking what looks like a bloody obvious answer and making those reading the debate question it. I think we should all pull together as a guild and help out Snaga, Niniel, Owly and Wonks. If we can pull this one off, nothing will hold any fear for us any more!!
:D
Come on guys, we're the best guild with a 100% debating record. Don't let this spoil it. Take the higher ground here :p

Well said Legolam! I hope to read something on the debate thread soon (other than argueing about the topic). I believe the clock is still running:)
Legolam
06-06-2003, 05:40 PM
Maybe if this debate could run a little longer to accommodate all the arguments?
Arvedui
06-07-2003, 08:06 AM
Well, considering you have now spent more than 2 of 7 days to argue the topic, I will not be in favour of prolonging it.
That does not mean to say that it is definately out of the question.
Now, I happen to agree with Aule that the topic is a horrendous one.
It might seem so at the first instant. But let me assure you that it is very possible to change the way it is standing now. There is still a number of openings the opponents have overlooked, that would, IMO, counter their present stance.
Remember what brought Sauron down: his main concern was with the Heir of Elendil, and the power of arms, and he overlooked the danger that crept ever nearer to bring about his total downfall.
OK, the 3rd Round is approaching.
The team that takes on the Guild of Dwarves/Elves shall be:
-Legolam
-Niniel
-tookish-girl
-legoman
We'll hopefually have a decent topic this time. And I believe that we get to choose our stance too :D.
Good luck guys!!

I have seen no posts from the Periaur for the last days in the debate against Tolkienologists.
And with Aulë's last post here, I have to ask:
Have you forfeited?
*pats Arvedui on the head*
That has been resolved through PMs... ;)
OK, we need someone to organise the Periaur Debate team whilst I'm away.
I don't trust you lot running amuck without a leader... ;)
Any volunteers? :)

I see I have been chosen for the debate team in the 3d round. I'd love to help, but when is this debate ging to happen? Cause I'll be gone from June 18 - 25 and from July 7 to August 13, so that might be a problem.
Hmmm, it's from the 22nd to the 29th.
So I presume that you'll be unavailable.

Hi everyone, yeah, so here I am reading the Sil and trying to get some form of argument sorted out for our debate and it's three days into it and there's no reply from the other Guild. I just wanted to check if that was normal.
Also I'm posting here because I don't mind looking like a fool with the Periaur but with the rest of the forum I think there's a danger in me looking rather silly. (ie, Not having read the Sil yet etc!)
By the way, excellent first post, snaga! ;)

we seem to be the only ones who've posted.

well they've posted, but I'm a bit confused, cos I've read through it and they don't seem to offer any arguement of their own, they just seem to try and cross out some of snaga's, and not very well either.
surely they should be coming up with different reasons as to why he was right.
Legolam
06-19-2003, 10:10 AM
Well, if that's their tactic, then we should just keep giving them more arguments that they have to try and counter. Keep 'em on the back foot ;)

Sorry to my team members for not posting in the last debate apart from the opening post. Wonks and I pretty much distracted each other, with sight-seeing and stuff.:)
Anyway I want to excuse myself from further debating. All this debating malarkey just isnt my cup of tea, you know.
OK, our team for the 5th Round, against OiE is so far:
-snaga1
-Legolam
-Aulë
and, ?
Who would like the 4th spot?
tookish? legoman? Elbe?
I think Niniel is still away, and Wonks is sick or something...

Sorry for letting the side down in the last one :(
This will be my last debate for a long while, as I'm away from the 6th Aug till 4 Sept, and I'll be busy "catching up" for the days after that.
OK, good
The debate has started, but has been halted because Beorn accidently banned tookish.
Lets keep our 100% record against OiE intact :D

Phew! Finally found a cyber cafe!
Sorry I have been away for so long. LA didn't have any cyber cafe's near my hotel so I wasn't able to log on.
I wanted to pop in here really quickly however to let you all know I will be returning home on Wednesday. So after I catch up w/ the forum I should be able to help the team out in the debate tournament...so please let me know if you need any help.
Sincerely yours from Chicago,

Hello, I will be hosting your next debate -- Round 6 -- Your team will debate against the Guild of Scholar's Hall.
Please submit your team as soon as possible.
You will be the Home team and have first choice of sides.
The debate thread is here (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=345187#post345187)

Allo allo, Tweens. I just thought I would remind you that we are waiting for your team to be posted so we can begin the debate. Thanks.
We may end up forfieting this Round...
There doesn't appear to be anyone from the Periaur who wants to debate.:(

08-13-2003, 09:45 PM
Well, I would like to debate, but I won't do it all by myself, cause I just don't know enough about Tolkien's work (haven't read HOME) and I don't have that much time to check every detail.
OK, our team shall be:
Aulë
Niniel
Elbereth
tookish-girl
If any of you need an e-copy of any particular HoME volume for this debate (Hopefully, we shaln't need them though...), just PM me, and I'll e-mail it to you.

You shouldn't need more then the Silmarillion for this debate.;)
Rats!
I was hoping for a nice simple LotR one :(
Ack! Evil topic!
Elbe, Niniel, PM me with what you think we should do.
Yay!
Thôl has offered to join our team for Round 6 :)
Hopefully the GoS and Chymaera will allow the swap.
Hope you're happy now, Tookish. I know how much you didn't want to be in the debate ;)

Mmhmm, when is it? What will be the topic? etc.....
It will be fairly soon after Round 6 is complete. That won't be until next Friday at least.
The topic will be whatever the host chooses. Hopefully we won't be stuck with another boring Sil one ;) .

Just make sure Snaga knows about this. :) He hasn't been on TTF for a while.
Also I wanna host a debate...I've never got to do that...also I feel like debating...just so long as it's not a Sil topic. :) C'mon..let me help, please? :)
Well ask FoaT if can can host the Round 8 debate that we are due to supply a host for.
And yes, Snaga knows. I've been pestering him about it for weeks now.
As for debating, you can't choose whether you get a Sil topic or not. You just have to join a team, and hope like hell that you get a nice LotR topic. And are you sure you'll turn up this time? ;) You have a history of not turning up for debates. :p

Anyway, if the last 2 days of the debate are also the first two days of my stay I'm sure he'll be much too busy to bother with a silly debate. ;) ;)
Yeah...ok...I'll try not to distract him...too much. And I'll try to remind him about the debate. But no promises ok?
OK, our Round 8 team shall be:
-Aulë
-Celebthôl
-Niniel
-snaga1
Niniel shall host the Round 8 debate between GoS and GoT
Thol shall host the Round 10 debate between GoO and GoS

I'm fine with the result (got up with a stinking hangover to watch it this morning) - I think Scotland acquitted themselves well against a far superior team. After 9 rounds, we are on 18 points.
After 8 rounds, OiE are on 18 points.

Therefore, no matter what happens in OiE's Round 9 debate, the winner of the OiE v Periaur debate will be the champions.

YAY!
We have finished!
We have finished the Debating Tournament! :D
YAY YAY YAY!
Well done people- no matter how the results pan out in the final round, we have done the Periaur proud!
Thanks to Elbereth, Legolam, Legoman, Niniel, Thol, Tookish and Wonks for putting their time aside to help out the Periaurian cause- without you lot, none of this would have been able to happen. Every single post in the Tournament, and any idea or encouragement given to the debators was worth while, and contributed to such a fantastic Tournament for us.
And I believe that the single Periaurian who deserves the most applause is the AMAZING SNAGA!
*bows down before the debating god*
"All hail Snaga: Champion of champions" :D
Snaga: I don't know how you kept your talents hidden for so long- but I'm damn glad that we found them in time for Round 1 of this Tournament.
Some of my favourite Periaurian memories from the Tournament:
- Our victory over the Tolkienologists in Round 2: it doesn't get any sweeter than that. :D
- Snaga's comment to Mrs Maggott about quoting the entire book (it's funny cause it's true :p).
- Those hilarious names we kept on giving each other whilst naming our teams before the debate.
- Legoman's post! Yes, it's amazing- the 'Guitar God' posted in the debate! Yay!
- Me pestering Wonks every day about posting in the debate before she went to England (And she managed to ignore me successfully :D).
- Tookish being scared witless about being put on the debate team. ;)
- Elbe's hilarious mix-up between Mordor and Utumno (you know we love ya Elbe ;) )
- Our constant taunting of the old fogies :D
*streamers fall down from the ceiling*
I think we can finally relax now
No more debating for a while :D

We would like to make a short, but important announcement.
A new activity called The Best of The Best Debating Tournament is about to start in a week. When everything is completed it will be made visible for you.
The Best of The Best will be a tournament in which the best six debators will be invited to debate bewteen themselves-1vs1.The members of every Guild should choose their best Debator who will represent them.
We realize that due to some real-life problems the member that is chosen may not be able to participate sometimes. That is why you are allowed to choose a replacement. The replacement will be allowed to take part only in 30 persents of the tournament.
Of course ,if you believe that the One you choose can be online during all ten rounds of the debates, you do not have to choose a replacement.
That is why we,the organizers of the tournament, kindly ask you to choose your best debator(and his replacement if you want)and send a pm to me (Gil-Galad)with the two names.
The Organizers of The Best of The Best
Should we select Snaga now? Or have a discussion, and decide on choosing Snaga? ;)
I'd nominate Legolam or Niniel as the back-up.
Gil-Galad
01-24-2004, 03:31 PM
Honestly we all hope that Snaga will be the one who will represent GoP.He has shown his debating abilities so many times :)

Well,it is up to you,GoP.I hope that you will choose your debator ASAP(and his replacement if he thinks he will not be able to take care of every round) and pm me. :)
Elbereth
01-26-2004, 06:26 AM
I second Aule's nominations...
Snaga of course should be our clear first choice.
However...I would also suggest that since Aule is back from his two month hiatus, he should participate as Snaga's second. He is the Periaur's manager of debates afterall.
Legolam
01-26-2004, 09:33 AM
However...I would also suggest that since Aule is back from his two month hiatus, he should participate as Snaga's second. He is the Periaur's manager of debates afterall. I concur!!! Snaga's the debating God, but Aule's not far behind and deserves to do some work after his holiday in the Outback ;) . Plus, I don't think I'd be able to help out as I'm pretty busy learning about the bowels at uni at the moment
Snaga
01-26-2004, 03:26 PM
Thank you all for the vote of confidence but there isn't even the remotest chance of me participating in any debates, probably until July. Sorry. I just have the most insane amount of work, and I have no time.:(
Hmmm, and neither do I.
That rules out Snaga, Legolam and myself.
I guess that leaves it up to Celebthol, Wonks, Niniel or Elbe (or anyone else who feels that they're up to the challenge)
Gil-Galad
01-26-2004, 03:43 PM
:(
Snaga we probably can think of something. Are you sure you cannot participate in the Tournament? You will also have a replacement who will be able to replace you in 30%of the debates if you are busy.
The whole TTF will loose a lot if a master of the debates like you does not take part in this Tournament!!!!!
Please think once again.:(
Legolam, you are right about Aule, but he will be probably busy with judging the debates, which means that he will not be allowed to participate in the Tournament.Of course if he wants to debate he is most welcome to do it.
You are very good debator too,and I think you can manage to back up Snaga.
Snaga

Gil-Galad
01-27-2004, 12:56 AM
I am really sorry Snaga :( :(
Then GoP should probably think of another leader.Probably Aule if he wants,it is up to you GoP!!!
I hope that you choose the best possible one and I am sure that he will defend GoP's name and honor in the best possible way.
No Snaga?!?!?!?!
mwahahahahahahahahaha...Victory is GoO's! ;)
But seriously... perhaps Beleg could work as a replacement at least? Didn't he join GoP? If so, someone might PM him about it... I know he loves to debate.
I'll probably be a replacement for GoO, and be seeing one of you Elberethians later on the battlefield! :D
Elbereth
01-27-2004, 07:02 AM
I am sad to hear that you cannot debate Snaga...but I can understand your dillemma as it is something I share. I have neither the time nor the talent to debate...so I will leave that to my other guild mates. If you want Aule...I'll take on the role of judge for the tournament and you can debate....I would be willing to do that if that will helps to bring our team to victory.
PS...Elberethians???  That kind of jab was just petty. The Periaurs are too independent to be followers...and beleive me, I doubt I would be the object of their devotion.
Gil-Galad
01-27-2004, 02:47 PM
Well, the things are becomming more and more interesting.GoO seems to be favorites for the Tournament, especially if Nom is the main representative, not a replacement.
Beleg is also a member of GoS so it depends on him, which Guild will choose him.
But also do not forget your talented Vala-Aule,he is sitting in the corner, waiting to be asked to represent GoP.

Elbereth, what is the situation with GoP's representative and his/her replacemnts.
As I can see you do not have muc opportunities :Aule, you,Legolam,Niniel, and of course Beleg(who should decide whether he will debate for you or for GoS if they invite him)
Beleg

I believe I am not a member of Guild of Periaur but rather a member of Guild of Scholar's Hall.

Somebody said that you were part of GoP too.Anyway, that means that GoP's members have one choice less.
Aule,Elbereth,Legolam,Niniel.........

I think Aulë is the obvious choice, if he's willing.

Well,I spoke with him but he is not sure, you, all members of GoP should convince him:)

Although I am the Guild Leader, I am not responsible for the guild debates...I have left that responsibility to Aule, the Guild of Periaur's manager of debates. I am leaving him with the ultimate executive decision as to who should debate in this tournament.
If they are willing and able to debate, I would recommend Aule and Niniel to represent the team. Both candidates are strong and experienced debators of high calibre...and I have faith they will represent the guild well.
As for myself....I am not willing to throw myself into such a competion. As I have said earlier...I do not have the time nor the desire to join in a debate. And based on my poor showing at my last debate, I am sure my fellow guild members are relieved to hear it.
Elbereth: I really would prefer not to commit myself to this tournament, since I am going to become overloaded with work in March. But since no one else seems to be putting up their hand, I guess I'll have to do it.

We can help you Aulë... you can always ask us if we have any more arguments or if we can look something up for you if you don't have time... It's just I think that you are more eloquent than me when it comes to debating, you just know how to say things in a convincing way (more than me).

I would like to ask Niniel to replace Wonks ASAP.
If GoP's member does not took part in the round I am afraid that their opponents will take the three points which are given for a win.
If there is a problem with Wonk and Niniel, you still have time to replace them.
Please do it as soon as possible.

Niniel

Well, since Wonks doesn't show up I suppose I will represent the Periaur. But I hope she does show up for other debates, cause I really don't want to do all of them.
