All righty... this thread is created for the sole purpose of talking about the greatest sport on Earth: BASEBALL!!!! Just talk about recent games, favorite teams and players, etc.

My favorite team is (I think you can already tell) the Chicago Cubs. I don't have a favorite player.

I'm sure this thread will probably catch FoolOfATook's and munckin's eye.... :)

Is this supposed to be a branch of the Guild of Sports? Because I know that everyone there is getting pretty sick of us talking about baseball.;) I'd love to join this, and at the same time quit the Guild of Sports, because all I ever talk about there is baseball.

My favorite team is the Red Sox, even though I live in New Jersey, and my favorite player is Nomar Garciaparra.

YAY!! Hi Luthien, you can be my Deputy Guildmaster. :) And, no, this isn't a branch of the Guild of Sports. It's just a Guild of a SPORT. :)

Today the Cubs have an off-day. Tomorrow, they start a 3-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers. I hope the Astros lose today, because if they win, they go another game forward. The Cubs lost first place in the NL Central a couple days ago. I'm not too happy. :(

One more thing:

I HATE THE WHITE SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    They beat the Cubs two straight games. :(

Argh I'll come here and represent the Braves before FoaT gets his chance!:D

I like John Smoltz a lot among the rest of the Braves lineup.

I am pretty much opposed to people who like teams just because they live near them. And that's the reason why I despise the Red Sox, the Yankees, and the Mets.;)

I'm sure this thread will probably catch FoolOfATook's and munckin's eye....

Now whatever would give you that idea? ;)

You can totally count me in.

I'm a lifelong Brave's fan, and although I dislike the American League (Bush should issue an executive order outlawing the DH rule), my favorite AL team is the BoSox, largely out of pity.

My favorite current players include: John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, Javy Lopez, Gary Sheffield, Andruw Jones, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Nomar Garciaparra, Rocco Baldelli (the kid is awesome- if he was playing for a real team, he'd probably already be a superstar), Mike Sweeney (again, if he wasn't stuck with the Royals, many, many more people would know his name), Mark Prior and Kevin Millwood (even if he does play for the hated Phillies). Basicly, I like anyone who is fun to watch, and doesn't play for the hated Expos, or the even-more-hated Yankees. Other teams I dislike include the Twins (I haven't forgotten 1991), the Blue Jays (nor have I forgotten 1992) and the Dodgers (because they should never have left Brooklyn).

My all-time favorite players include: Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Catfish Hunter (a fellow North Carolina native, even if he did go to the Yankees), Joe Morgan, Charlie Keller (a Yankees centerfielder who would have been a major star if he hadn't gotten hurt, and a distant cousin of mine), Sandy Koufax and Ted Williams.

I'm just glad you said it, so I didn't have to... ;)

Actually, this year's Cubs are much better than I expected them to be. I knew that Prior and Wood would be a lethal combination, but I didn't expect to see Alou batting .300, and looking like his old self, or Patterson to be hitting as well as he is.

I still think the Cardinals will find a way to win the NL Central, but the Cubs might give Montreal and LA or San Francisco a serious contender for the Wild Card spot...

Go anyone who's not in the major leages! I don't watch that stuff anymore. It's all about the money for them, I've just stopped watching.

But I've got a double header today! Yay! Wish me luck! I'm starting catching the first game and starting pitching the next!

I disagree- I think the fact that baseball was able to avoid a strike last season speaks volumes about the fact that money, while always being a key issue (arguably THE key issue), is not the sole concern of today's major-leaguers.

It's unfortunate that you've stopped watching, because there are a lot of players out there today who will rank among the all-time greats- players like Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, Alex Rodriguez- the kind of players who don't come along very often- the kind that your grandkids will ask you about.

Then there's a crop of exciting young talent- guys like Mark Prior, Rocco Baldelli (I'm really keen on this kid), Damian Moss, Ichiro Suzuki, Albert Pujols, Alfonso Soriano, Hank Blalock, Adam Dunn, Mike MacDougal (His stuff is just nasty- he should develop into a top-level closer) who are all incredibly fun to watch.

I mean, right now the Braves are tearing up the NL, the Yankees seem on the verge of an all-out war between Steinbrenner and Torre, my fantasy team, The Nazgul, continues to dominate- right now is a great time to be a baseball fan!

Well, FoaT, when players leave a team that they've been with for lots of season's because they're offered a couple more million dollars one tends to draw my conclusion...

The fact that there was even going to be a strike speaks volumes about this. Players seriously considering stoping playing the sport all americans love because they're loosing a fraction of their Millions and Millions of dollars? That is insane. So you won't get a couple new Ferrari's this year... Whoopdee doo. That's no reason do dissapoint all of America.

I never said there wasn't a load of talent. There's probly more skill today than there's ever been. But it may have to do with the new core standardization to the balls, and it may have to do with the fact that each team has a couple people on Steroids, but the Talent is amazing. I'll just watch Sportcenter to fill me in on all of the great plays these talents have.

Well, FoaT, when players leave a team that they've been with for lots of season's because they're offered a couple more million dollars one tends to draw my conclusion...

This is a (deliberate?) over-simplification. Players leave teams for lots of reasons. Money is one of them. But who are we to begrudge a player for attempting to recieve fair market value for his services? If you worked for Microsoft, and IMB offered you a significantly higher salary, would it be immoral for you to change companies? Of course not. But when Jason Giambi is offered more money to play for the New York Yankees than to play for the Oakland Athletics, he's criticized for changing teams.

Here's another way to look at it- is it wrong for a player to leave a team where he's spent "lots of seasons" to play for a team with a better chance of winning a World Series? I don't believe it is. However, the player is still failing to be loyal, according to your model.

At any rate, this is one of those pointless debates that never gets resolved- there is probably nothing I could say that would change your view of baseball players as greedy mercenaries, and probably nothing you could say to change my opinion that players have a right to earn fair market value for their skills.

I propose that we drop the matter of economics entirely, and focus on talking about the greatest sport known to man. :D

Too bad the Cubs lost 12-6 to the Brewers in the 10th inning

I feel your pain, Eliot- the Braves also lost last night. (I HATE the Phillies).

Jesse brought up the Twins- they're tied for first in the AL Central (well technically the Royals are slighty ahead, but since the difference between their winning percentages is .002, they're essentially tied). Given the incredible weakness of the AL Central, this has to be regarded as a bit of a dissapointment for the Twins, even when one factors in the incredible abberation the Royals were the first month or so of the season. This is a talented Minnesota team- Torii Hunter, Corey Koskie, Jacque Jones, Eddie Guardado, A.J. Pierzynski- they all are good-to-great players, and they should be much more dominant in their division.

And, for the record, FoolofATook's All-Star Team Ballot:

American League:
Catcher: Jorge Posada, New York
First Base: Mike Sweeney, Kansas City
Second Base: Alfonso Soriano, New York
Third Base: Troy Glaus, Anaheim
Shorstop: Alex Rodriguez, Texas
Outfield: Ichiro Suzuki, Seattle
Outfield: Melvin Mora, Baltimore
Outfield: Manny Ramirez, Boston
Starting Pitcher: Esteban Loiaza, Chicago
Relief Pitcher: Keith Foulke, Oakland

National League:
Catcher: Javy Lopez, Atlanta
First Base: Richie Sexson, Milwaukee
Second Base: Jeff Kent, Houston
Third Base: Scott Rolen, Saint Louis
Shortstop: Rafael Furcal, Atlanta
Outfield: Barry Bonds, San Francisco
Outfield: Gary Sheffield, Atlanta
Outfield: Albert Pujols, Saint Louis
Starting Pitcher: Kevin Brown, Los Angeles
Relief Pitcher: John Smoltz, Atlanta

Of course, one doesn't get to vote for pitchers on the real All-Star Ballot, but I added it anyway. :D

Hi Eliot,
The Yankees are a good team, it's just they didn't do too well when they played the Cubs. Sadly, the Minnesota Twins loose EVERYTIME when they play the New York Yankees.... :(

FoolOfATook
06-27-2003, 11:46 PM
The Yankees aren't playing as well as they should be, and the rumors of Torre going to war with Steinbrenner ain't helping. Their shaky bullpen might haunt them come August and September...

Does anyone else play fantasy baseball? I currently have three teams in play, and one of them, The Nazgul, has spen all season in either first or second place. Things are about to get ugly though, since both my first baseman, Mike Sweeney, and my second baseman, Jeff Kent went on the DL in the past 36 hours. I had to drop two outfielders (Rocco Baldelli and Eric Byrnes) to pick up replacements for the two. I had been hoarding those two, who I picked up from waivers, in the hopes of trading them to someone who woke up and realized how good their seasons were. I suppose I could have dropped Ken Griffey Jr, who's been riding the bench ever since I picked him up while he was injured, but I'm holding out hope that he'll regain his old form after the All-Star Break...

Also, did anyone see that Boston scored 14 runs on Florida in the FIRST INNING tonight? Ten runs before the first out- a new major league record. Hats off to the BoSox.

I hope the Cubs are embarrassed about what they did to Mark Prior last night- he struck out 16 batters and yet didn't get the run support neccessary to give him a win. The more I watch Prior and Kerry Wood, the more convinced I am that Chicago could pull of a major upset in the playoffs- look at the way that Arizona was able to tear through the postseason on the strengths of Johnson and Schilling for an example of how two completely dominant pitchers can control a playoff series. Of course, the 2001 D-Backs had a stronger offense than the Cubs have shown thus far, plus a lights-out closer in the under-rated Byung-Hyun Kim. Still, if Sosa and Alou play as well as we all know they can, and Choi recovers well from his concussion, and plays to the level that he's shown flashes of, and Damian Miller (who, coincidently was on the D-Backs World Series team) regains his All-Star form, I can see the Cubs sneaking into the LCS.

Then again, they are the Cubs, so I suppose the safe money is on the team melting down in September, Wood getting hurt, and the team finishing in third...

Not really significant, but I thought it was cool that Javy Lopez hit home runs against both Tom Glavine and Kevin Millwood in his first game against each of the fomer Braves aces. Javy must have been paying some kind of close attention when he was their battery mate...

The Angels have returned to their usual form, and are thirteen games back, despite having essentially the same roster that won the Series last year. Even when one factors in injuries to two of their top stars (Troy Percival and Darin Erstad), and the fact that the AL West is as tough as usual, it's still a bit surprising to see Anaheim that far back. I don't think any of us expected a Halo Dynasty, but who would have predicted them to fall back to Earth this quickly?

It's nearly July, and the Tigers still haven't won their twentieth game. They haven't won their nineteenth either. This team might have a shot at the 1962 Mets' record of 40-120. Can anyone here even name a Tiger without looking it up? I think that Dimitri Young still plays for them, and that one of their outfielders might be named something like Bobby Higginson, but that's all I can summon up. On the other hand, I can name three members of their coaching staff- Manager Alan Trammell (who I idolized as a kid), Kirk Gibson and Lance Parrish. Kids, when you can name more of coaching staff than the players, you have big troubles. An interesting question: last year the team sent Robert Fick to the All-Star Game (a fact I only know because Fick is now a Brave). Should the rule requiring a player from every team be waived out of respect for just how awful these Tigers really are? (I've now looked it up, and it seems that Dimitri Young, the team's leftfielder, is their best player. His stats:

Average: .284
HRs: 15
Runs: 35
RBIs: 43
OBP: .350
Slugging: .534
OPS: .892

Not bad, but not really All-Star level either, especially for an Outfielder. Actually, they're far better than I would have expected. While looking this up, I discovered two more Tigers who I have heard of- Dean Palmer and Steve Avery. Palmer's on the DL right now, but he won the Silver Slugger award a few years ago, I believe. I had thought Avery retired in '99, but apparently Detroit has brought him back. The rationale for doing so escapes me, since he's racked up a 6.35 ERA, and managed only 5 strikeouts in 11.1 innings.

In other news about washed-up, former Atlanta pitchers, the D-Rays let relief pitcher John Rocker go, after having signed him earlier this season. I like to use John Rocker as exhibit A in my belief in baseball Karma. ;)

Hate to double post, but I thought it worth mentioning that the Mets have just traded Roberto Alomar, who, since becoming a Met, has done his best to try and convince everyone that ten years spent as the best second fielder in the game were some sort of mass delusion. The White Sox, for reasons which escape me, traded away three prospects for Alomar. How many teams has he been on now, anyway? Without looking it up- I think he began as a Padre, and was part of that huge trade that also included Tony Fernandez and Fred McGrif, sending him to Toronto, where he played on the 1993 World Series Blue Jays team (I can't remember exactly when the trade was, so I'm not sure if he was on the 1992 team. I don't remember him being on that team, but then I've done my best to repress the memories of the 1991, 1992, 1996 and 1999 World Series games. From Toronto he went to Baltimore, where he played for two or three seasons, and where he was involved in that famous spitting-in-the-umpire's-face-incident. From Baltimore I'm pretty sure he went straight to Cleveland, where he played for something like three seasons before he went to New York, and suddenly forgot everything he ever knew about baseball.

Question: If Alomar gets elected to the Hall of Fame (and I think he's got a more than fighting chance, but I'm saying that without checking his numbers) what team cap does he wear? I guess Toronto, since he won the Series there, but he didn't spend anymore time there than he did anywhere else. Who knows, maybe he'll re-discover himself, and lead the ChiSox to the kind of post-season glory that has eluded them since the Second World War, and all will agree that he should go in as a White Sock. But it seems unlikely. Anyway, ever since the whole flap about what cap Clemens will wear started, I've been wondering about the real effects that free agency will have on the cap-on-the-plaque-tradition.

A topic:

Here are my current playoff picks-

AL East- New York
AL Central- Kansas City
AL West- Seattle

NL East- Atlanta
NL Central- Chicago
NL West- San Francisco

AL Wild Card- Oakland

Man, the playoff race is really going awesome, especially in the NL Central. It's so suspenseful. I'm not really expecting St. Louis to rise back up, but there's always the possibility that they'll sweep Houston. The Cubs are off today, unfortunately. They play in Pittsburgh on Friday (DH), Saturday, and Sunday. They're off again on Monday. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we play in Cincinnati. Pittsburgh comes to play in Chicago on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and then the Cubs are done with the regular season. Yeah, we always seem to choke at the end, but we do have the longest streak of winning our division in American sports history.

For the series, I think it's a given that either the Giants or the Braves take the NL Pennant, since those two teams stand miles above the rest of the NL. For the AL, the A's are getting really hot right now, and if they had Mulder, I'd pick them for the Series. The Red Sox have one of the most impressive line-ups I've ever seen, and Pedro is always the man, but on the down side, Kim always seems to choke in big games, and, well, they are the Red Sox. Because I expect Boston to, well, be Boston, I'll say the A's take the Pennant.

Mark Prior, Chicago Cubs

Oooooo............Mark Prior......:)

The Cubs are gonna whoop the Braves tomorrow night, just so you folks know. Welcome to Chicago, where the weather is cruel, the fans are cruel, and Mark Prior destroys other teams with K's. ;) :)

GO CUBS!!!

Er....I think the little bear cub got a little too close to the water, and that giant ugly fish ate him....:(

Eliot, I guess you're probably stoked about the moves that your Cubbies have made so far this offseason- picking up Hawkins to be Borowski's set-up man (and stealing him from Minnesota before the Yanks could) and picking up Lee from the Marlins (although Choi might still turn out to be as good as we all thought he would be before the season, especially if he cans stay healthy). I don't envy the other teams in the NL Central...

I know we have some BoSox fans around these parts, although I'm not sure if they've logged on recently, or if they're still gloating... ;)

If Schilling and Pedro can both stay healthy, and if Pedro stays happy, then the Sox will sport a rotation nearly as scary as the Braves' had through the 90s- Pedro, Schilling, Lowe, Wakefield- that might be enough to finally break the curse...

(It won't, of course, but it's fun to pretend it might... ;)

And as if I didn't hate the Yankees enough, now they go and grab Sheff.

WE HATES THE STEINBRENNER! WE HATES HIM FOREVER!

Yup, I'm stoked about our moves. :p I seriously think next year is the year. And I mean THE year. :D

Good, you shouldn't envy the other teams in the NL Central. Because there's nothing to be envious about!! :D :p

Like I said, the Cubs are poised to be really, really good next year, but it must be remembered that they are still, well, the Cubs. Meaning that I wouldn't be making too many plans for October yet...

Besides Albert Pujols, Scott Rolen, Lance Berkman, Houston's bullpen and a Saint Louis team that won 4 Gold Gloves this season... ;)

In further news about the evil that is Steinbrenner, the Yanks grabbed Vasquez from the Expos. Although I'm glad that he's out of the NL East, I still hate the fact that the Yanks have already begun to rebuild their rotation.

Okay, Baseball Guild unofficial poll:

Who's having a better offseason so far?

The Red Sox, in signing Schilling

-or-

The Yankees, losing Pettite, but picking up Vasquez, and (probably) Kevin Brown and ...grrr... Sheffield
