Oh, blame me for being so curious.... but would you like to share what your Forum name means (some of them are quite understandable, of course! ;) ) and why you have chosen it in particular?
Once upon a time I opened a similar thread somewhere on these boards... outside the Guild...but I now care about the Guild! :D :D :D
And I thought that this new thread will help us know each other even better... Besides, it can be fun! Summer!!!! :D
******
To start it :
My name I received from a name-generator on the Barrow Downs site and it means a Lonely Eagle . As I have always admired these creatures and after reading about them in Tolkien books ...etc.. (other reasons too ;) )..... I liked the name very much and I kept it.
*****
What about you?

Directly from Councilofelrond.com, my Sindarian name is Tûrwaithon. Victory to the people... Nick:)
Go Here (http://www.councilofelrond.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Semantics&file=index&volume=4) for a good.. no GREAT names database.;)
EDIT:
Oh... And what our Forum name is? That would be Moraran. Literally Black King. No elvish word for Captain:( Strange... there should be:eek:
I originaly picked MorgulKing if anyone can remember... I changed it to Black Captain just because it's SOOOO unvalueably cooler. I just thought this character was so powerful and cool, but not so much to be Sauron or Melkorish power.

:)
My name at Tolkien Debates was Beleg_strongbow, and I wanted to maintain one name on all Tolkien related forums visited by me, so I had no other option to go by the name of Beleg_strongbow, although the '_' really irks me.
And on TD I choose Beleg_strongbow because, well because It was the first name that came in my mind at the moment. :)

One day I came up a site with Elvish names (find your name in Elvish and so on...;)) and here's what I learned there:
MICHAEL: In Hebrew, Mi kha-'el? is the rhetorical question "Who [is] like God?" - in Quenya Man [ná] ve Eru?. This may be contracted to Manveru
I fell in love with that name 'from the first sight'...
And that meaning... it makes me feel so proud (maybe too proud... no I'm kidding:D;)).
BTW: I checked that site which BlackCaptain 'offered' and I'm little confused:confused: - there is my name written Manberu (maybe the difference in one small letter-''b'' instead of ''v''-comes from differences in Quenya and Sindarin... I don't know, but I like Manveru better so I'll just stick to that;)).
BTW2: Since we are talking about names... I don't know if you are familiar with this site (I saw it on the other forum;)):
Find Your Hobbit name (http://www.chriswetherell.com/hobbit/)
It's 'pure' fun...
My name (Hobbit name;)) is Berilac Maggot ;)
(is it possible that we're 'connected' in some way, Mrs. Maggott?:D;))

It means I wanted a name that was fun to type.:D
Scatha
07-19-2003, 12:08 AM
Well, my name seems to be obvious, Scatha:
One of the four documented dragons in Middle Earth by Tolkien.
The reason was simple:
1) A dragon is a sign of strength, according to chinese astrology.
2) I already have a dragon tattoed on my upper right arm.
3) Next to Elves, dragons are one of my main passions.
4) The name wasn't taken. ;)
BlackCaptain, there is a site that offers a quenya word for Captain, which is Nikerym, but the site also adds words to the wordlist made by Tolkien, so it is not totally accurate.
Yet it does give you a word to use for Captain. ;)
Very simple: my real name is Alex. Xale is an anagram of this, but it sounds the same and looks better with a 'Z' instead of an 'X'.

If anyone around here is strong in Quenya/Sindarin...whatever other form of Elvish
What would "Tarí Alcarin " mean? This is the name that page gave to me. Thanx, ManvEru! BTW, I have wondered what your name might mean...
Zale, I like it more with an "X".... but it's your name - you decide :D
Beleg, did you come around through the TD first ?
Anamatar, don't hide! :p :D I remember what you once explained about how you came up with this name! :D What now? Have you already forgotten or .... :p
Scatha.... I have always wondered why you don't use a "dragon"-avatar ;) And although it is not the place but would you consider the idea of starting a research on Dragons at the "Study"? Those Halls have been all covered with dust! At least promise me you'll think about it! I personally will be glad to participate. I used to offer dragons-about threads more than once on this and on other boards. Aren't they fascinating creatures!

Let me see, boss...
I'm not so strong in Elvish languages, but I like translating very much (I study to be one in the future;)).
I think the name you've been given is in Quenya:
Tari - n. queen
Alcarin - adj. glorious
What else can it simply mean than ''glorious queen''...
Fine name our ''glorious wraith queen''

The night before I joined I was reading the LotR Appendixes and I came across a guy named Atanamir. I liked the name so I wrote it down on a sticky note someplace. The next day, I was at my brother's work place and I didn't exactly have access to any books. So I registered at TTF thinking Anamatar was Atanamir.:p

Since I like both Elves and dragons, I decided to take an elven avatar and a dragon name. That may change in time though.
As for the study, most of the research on dragons is freely available on the "Encyclopedia of Arda" website. Even an article that 'proves' that balrogs had wings, by using quotes from the book.
But I'd certainly be willing to do a Dragons 'r Us thread. ;)

The Encyclopedia of Arda is an encyclopedia and that's it - nothing more!
But look at
this place (http://www.thetolkienwiki.org/wiki.cgi) !!!!!!
Does the Encyclopedia of Arda provide such a detailed scope of information about dragons? NO! Only Tolkien Wiki! :p :D
And now, all that we need there is a nice Scatha-style picture of a dragon! ;) :D

My name?Hmm...nice thread,Lhun!:)
My name was, actually, proposed by GG.He told me to register in the forum because 'it was a great fun and very educational' and so did I. I hadn't read much of Tolkien then so I asked him what name would be suitable for me.And he gave me the name Finduilas. Later I read the Sil of course and found out who this Finduilas was and I nearly fell in love with her as a character and everything.:) He was very right about my name and I should thank him.:)Thank you,my brother! ;)
Now,as I said this and mentioned the sister-brother relationship between us (as characters I mean) I start to think that he had planed this!;)He knew that Gil-Galad was Finduilas's brother and I didn't and now he can fool everyone on the forum that we are brother and a sister in real life to by calling me 'my little elven sis'! ;):D Hehe,I got your intentions, big brother!;):D But don't worry,I don't mind!:D

Celebithil
07-24-2003, 02:10 AM
My name is supposed to mean "Silver Blade" in elvish (I dont remember if its Quenya or Sindarin)I took celeb- silver and added ithil- for blade not sure if its right could be Celebil but I like Celebithil just fine.
Eriol
07-24-2003, 04:08 AM
My name is cool :D
I don't know why I picked it. I like the character; I like the sound of the name. I like short names, rather like hobbits do, to avoid having others shortening it for you ;).
The only instance I've seen of that happening is Celebthôl calling me "Eri". Since I call him "Thôl", I guess that's fair.

Well, why I chose Mormegil is simple... He's my favorite character. However, there was already a Mormegil forum member, so in haste, without thinking, I wrote '73', because those are the first two numbers in my e-mail address. Ever sunce, however, I ave been wanting to change my name. I considered re-joining under soething else, but I obviously decided against it. Therefore, I now endevour to earn the option of changing my name by participating on TTF. It's been slow, however, and I don't even know when I'll be given the option.
Well, that's it.:D

Lantarion

Lantarion is Quenya.
lantar: verb, 'to fall'.
-ion: suffix, 'son of..'
I mean it to mean "Son of the Fallen", 'the Fallen' being Númenor. I was and still am somewhat interested especially in Númenor. :)

Hehehe :)
Do you mean Lanty does not approve too much of my favourite Feanaro? And I do? ... I haven't noticed.... But if you say so... I believe you! :D
Well.... I do admire this character.... but mostly for the depth of the tragedy he experiences. Few characters in the books attract by such a depth of personality as Feanor - Aldarion, Turin Turambar.... Not even Aragorn! He is placed on some piedestal of "the Hero" and the reader can not easily (if at all possible!) see into his internal personal and quite humane essence.
While in the cases of the characters quoted above, one can do that and one can feel joy and grief just as strongly as the character himself!
This is why I am attracted by Feanor!
It's not that I aprove of all his actions....But to call him the "Hitler" of ME!...
Please !!!!!!!!! (I know that it was not Lant who named him like that! )

Eledhwen
08-31-2003, 11:24 PM
Eledhwen means 'Elf sheen' and was the second name given to Morwen.
I wanted a Tolkien name, but a human one. I was really moved by this passage in the Sil:Sitting in the shadow of the stone there was a woman, bent over her knees; and as Hurin stood there silent she cast back her tattered hood and lifted her face. Grey she was and old, but suddenly her eyes looked into his, and he knew her; for though they were wild and full of fear, that light still gleamed in them that long ago had earned for her the name Eledhwen, proudest and most beautiful of mortal women in the days of old.

From the Silmarillion Appendix (Elements in Sindarin and Quenya Names): Kel- 'go away', of water 'flow away, flow down', in Celon; from et-kele 'issue of water, spring' was derived, with transposition of the consonants, Quenya ehtele,, Sindarin eithel.
Celeborn was originally Keleborn, until Tolkien standardised all his Elvish so that no names began with K, but with a hard C. I think the '-us' ending sounds more Roman than Elvish. (The Romans had a habit of adding an 'us' or 'ix' to the end of Celtic Iron Age names). Elvish has the ending '-os(t)' for 'fortress' as in Angrenost, Formenos, Mandos, etc.
Therefore Kelonos (Celonos) would have probably conjure up images of something like a stronghold from which a spring issued; maybe 'Fortress fountain', and Kelonus is not far removed from that.

Try here (http://www.barrowdowns.com/themes_Rings.asp).
And in what language exactly do you want these translations (Quenya, Sindarin...)?
Manveru
09-18-2003, 07:34 PM
All righty then... I've got some propositions (if it's still of any interest;)); all of them from Sindarin (and all are spelled with 'c' instead of 'k'):
1. Kelonos (Celonos) = celon - river + os - around, about
I guess the meaning can be: about a river or around a river (does it make any sense?;))
2. Kelonos (Celonos) = cel - flowing, running + o - from + nos - clan, family
In this case it can be understood like: flowing, running from a clan, family; maybe descend from/belong to a clan, family.
I don't know... what do you think of the above?
----------
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't see that earlier (I somehow haven't visited this thread for some time;))... Kelonus, isn't your name already translated? I saw Eledhwen had done that earlier... and it's much better than mine "scribble";)

A translation doesn't always read well with the words in the same order as the original. Tolkien had been aware of that from the very start, as when he was a small boy he wrote a story and was corrected in his usage, being told that he could not refer to a "green great dragon". He wondered why on earth not, and a love relationship with language grew until it could be contained in private no longer and flowed out into the world. Often, when I write Tolkien's works into Microsoft Word, the grammar checker still suggests I re-arrange the great man's usage.
Kelonus was an evil dwarf!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOO!Get your pen out and start writing a story starring the great hero Kelonus.

I think its well documented, but i'll tell the story of my name again for those who are new enough not to remember me, or old enough to have forgotten:
Gil-galad's my favorite character in Tolkien (used to be anyway), and I was under the impression that for one names weren't case-sensitive when I registered, and two that dashes weren't considered acceptable characters in a name, like in an email account. Much to my horror, i discovered not only that there was someone with pretty much the same name on the forum, but also that he was an active member in the one guild I had any interest in! Great how these things work out isn't it!?

Melian Le Fay

I used Melian because it's an anagram of my own name... Actually, it resembles my own name in accentation too (Milena)... I had to put something else too, 'cause Melian was already taken... And I figured Le Fay, even though it's not from one of Tolkien's languages... I was told Le Fay means "dark one", meaning woman with dark hair... Something poetical about it...

I tried translating my name into Quenya (on Council of elrond), but I couldn't
It;s not in the library so I tried translating it... but it didn't work... Could somebody help me about this, please...? :D

You are Milena too?Our Melian's name is Milena, now we have not only three Melians but also two Milenas!!!!
Manveru, you should be very careful not to do a mistake with the wrong one ;) :D

I have no idea what my name means, but I have a clue that it is not something "noble". I just adopted this name in a website, since I didn't bothered to make one up myself.
Minuel Lasgalas
02-14-2004, 03:01 AM
Enter another Melian - different variety.
I have thought about changing imy name due to the potential confusion but I'm not sure how I would do that and not lose what I have done so far. Any suggestions?
Melian was one of my favorite characters in the Sil and the Lasgalas comes from the trees on my property... so Lasgalas would remain a part of my forum name.

kidding... don't you worry, Kingy, I'll find a way... (like Stingie sings: ...let your soul be your pilot...)

Hey, and who's your Melian? So, we are name-mates both way!!! Oh, I have to meet her! :p And where is she from? I'm from Serbia, so it means we're neighbours, Gil-Galad! ;)
Damn, I knew this wouldn't be so original... what if the three of us make a big confusion...?
And thanks for the compliment, Manveru... It means Michael, am I right?! I think I read that on a site concerning Quenya...

Well, you've got more in common than meets the eye;) (smart those Milenas :p ;)). You're welcome, I meant that (so enchanted by that Maia:D).
Oh, and I don't think you'll meet her soon, our;) Melian (btw: she's from Bulgaria--you've got nearer to her than me:()... she's quite busy at the moment, but who knows... (keep the faith;)).

She's one of my favourite characters, too! I say one of, because whatever book I read, I never have just one fav. character... she's a bit tragic (and which Sil character isn't?) and that's why I like her so much...
...unless... you weren't thinking of the book character, but some "real Maia"... ;)

Speaking of names... (since this is a thread about names), I have several friends who's names sound Tolkienish -
Maia, Varda, Linda, Vanya, Borimir (almost like Boromir), Eleni... cool, huh? I know who's company to choose... ;)

Hmm..quite a lot of similarities...probably because we live in similar countries! :p
I mean our countries were involved much in both history and culture aspects..so it is logical to have similar even equal names...traditions...etc.
We have Vanya too and Maia, and Varda, and Linda (though it is a bit "foreignish"), and Elena (here's a small difference), and Borimir.
We also have Lina which..hmm...at least to me sounds Tolkienish..:p

I remember when my friends and I tried to translate our names into Quenya or Sindarin, and we run into some problems - the program wouldn't accept meanings of names, only actual names, which are, of course, from English-spoken territories... That sucks! Do you know any good sites where I can somehow translate my name...? I tried Counsil of Elrond, but it's not working...
Anyway, my friend Maia (she was with us) just commented: "huh, you petty mortals, I don't have to bother... My name is already Elvish" I hate her. ;) :p :D

I entered my full name, and I got "Deceitful Orcling." I don't know how I should feel right now.
Of course I am fascinated by evil things, still it's a little surprising I'm an orcling, and a deceitful one at that.
I guess it's good... so I'll say YAY! and stick with it.

Yes, it means exactly that. I know it isn't such a big thing but I can say I made it myself.

I also think that it is a good name. As I've said ages ago, I also made my name up myself; My name is Adúnaic for "Lord of Death," the element khôr meaning "lord," the ’n meaning "of," and the last part agan meaning "death." Thus, Khôr’nagan.
I personally find making names a lot of fun. I have made other names, such as Míradul "Jewel of the Night" (for someone other than myself) and Narodur (short for Naromídur) "Flame in the Darkness." Other names I also have, but none are as good.

I wasn't presumptious enough to go for Melkor or Morgoth or Sauron but... Grond (aka the Hammer of Hell, Mace of Melkor, Mallet of Malice, you get the picture) seemed "challenging" enough to get some feathers ruffled.
