View Full Version : Pick a century

If you could live for one whole year in a given century, which century would you pick? You can choose any place on Earth; you can belong to any social class. The only restriction is historical restrictions; for instance, remember that if you pick a century too far back you will have a lot of inconveniences to deal with (personal hygiene, limited diet, etc.). You can throw in the deal the opportunity to meet great people, of course.

I was thinking of doing this by millennia; but we can pick an all-around winner among them.

My all-around winner is the Roman province of Iudaea (sp?), in the 1st century A.D.; for obvious reasons.

;)

I'll pick another century from the second millennium if this idea gets some responses.

I actually would have liked to live in 1700s England as an upper class rich citizen. You know, Pride and Prejudice sort of thing. Cool long coats, women wearing bosom-bursting dresses and classy parties.

Also, 5th century BC Greece would have been cool.

Egypt during the reign of Rameses II (1279-1213bc). One of the greatest kings the world has known, and to atually witness the creation of the fabulous Temples at Abu Simbel!

Otherwise, England in the time of the Plantagenets, obviously not one of the extremely poor! Plague, dirt notwithstanding, boy did they live!

Well, my first choice would be the last year of the life of Jesus of Nazareth, in Judea. But, since other people have said that....

I would also like to live in Egypt during the reign of Queen Hatshepsut. What an awesome woman!

A third choice for me would be around Palmyra, New York, 1830....

Oh! I see another time-machine has been set up! :D
Cool! :D

First I'd live for an year around the time of the King Arthur events - when was that?....- 5-th century AD ?
I wish I could see him pulling Excallibur out of that rock and I would wish to live in Camelot and meet Merlin and the King himself of course, to accompany his knights, to see a dragon hunt (too scared to participate myself ;) :D ) ) and I would like to finally see that hand of the Lady of the Lake taking Excallibur back and I would like to sail on that boat all the way to Avalon...wherever it was...

****Lhun opens eyes from those dreams....***** :D

Then......I'd like to join the hordes of the people that came from the far East, crossed almost whole Asia - from the steppes of Mongolia right to the banks of the river Danube - the Bulgarians! :D I would like to be the personal esquire of Khan Asparuh and be right beside him when he was crossing the great river and entered the lands that he soon conquered and formed the Bulgarian state - in 681. Oh! I'd like to see that!

But then...I'd go much back in time - to the Golden Rome... when the Empire was still strong and flourishing.... I'd spend more than an year there! :D... And I'd probably travell round all those Roman provinces all over the ancient world...

**** Someone is trying to drag Lhun down from the time-machine but she just don't want to stop and get off!!!! Finally....they manage to do it... But she stands in the line again ...waiting for another turn to get on ...**** :D

I would also like to Atlantis at the zenith of it's power.

I would like to live in Ancient Rome during the rise of Julius Caesar's power (80-44 B.C.). I would also like to live in the...late 12th century I believe, during the reign of the great Kublai Khan (he had an awesome palace that I'd love to live in).;)

Hey, I hadn't seen this thread before...
I would like to live in the first century BC, at the time when Augustus was fighting for sole leadership (about 40-30 BC).
Or in the 4th century AD, when there were many interesting religious developments going on. I'm studying this period for my final thesis, so it would be nice to check some hypotheses.
I'd also like the Middle Ages, but I don't have an exact idea of when I would like to live, perhaps the 10th century since people always think this was a period of chaos and war, and I would like to see if there were also good things happening.

I think that I would pick the Edwardian era of England at about the early 1900's. I watched the PBS show "Manor House" and fell in love with the lifestyle. Being rich, I would love the clothes, the parties, and especially the house. It wasn't dramatically advanced, but at least they had some basic anemities. I love how England has a beautiful country side, and I think I would ride horses during the majority of the day if I lived then...or at least be outside.

I am not to good at historical dates. But the time and place that I would really like to look at is Britain before the Romans found it. I would love to see just what culture was here before the Romans came, saw and .............ruined. ;) :D

i love "time machine" threads....:-)
anyway i think my first choice would be the 5th century BC in Athens.....as a consultant to Pericles (i know, i know...a bit cheesy but still..)
the other choice would be the end of the 19th century, in Paris, as a lazy intellectual...:-)

I love that idea too.

What you say is interesting because, I've met two or three Welshmen so far, they absolutely didn't care of this culture and I couldn't understand why. I mean, I've read some books about it and it really fascinated me. The language was beautiful, too.So sad to lose things like that. (I say that but I personally don't speak a word of my own regional language...)

Other possibitlity, I'd like to go to the early twentieth century and meet some important people I really would like to speak to. Just to understand History. (from all sides). So I suppose for that it would be better to be rich and to live somewhere in Britain (why am I still stuck here???)

I'd like to live at the time of the Firs Crussades and be a knight's wife. Or even better- a travelling musician.

Or maybe Ancient Greece, Ephesus, at the time Alexander the Great came to the city.

Another option---Paris, the end of the 19th century, or the Belle Epoque!

Or Else--the Bulgarian Kingdom or Byzantium during the second half of the 9th century.(I know it doesn't ring a bell with most of you, but to me that's the most glorious time of my people).

Ancient Egypt... the time they built the Great Pyramid at Giza (~2575 BC--during a reign of Cheops, the pharao of the IV Dynasty)... I'd like to know how they did that... it's remarkably beautiful (though it looks so simple;)) and yet... it's one of the greatest riddles they left for us... I'd like to stand there, watching them building this magnificient work of human hands, and say: "Aha! So that's how it works...";):D

If you could live then, you would most probably be engaged in the building...think about it---garlic on you menu three times a day (much enrgy); injuries; low pay.
Well, unless you were Khufu or the architect himself. Or if it was really the extra terrestrials who built the Pyramids.:D

Garlic? Huh, I love garlic!!:D

And since I have no architect experience... but wait!! My grandfather is an architect! So I would probably have been in the architect's family... everything fits for me then:D

BTW: I like garlic, I really do... it's good for your health (and it scares off those creepy vampires;)--though it can cause some problems in relations with other people... agh! that breath! Go away... boy;):D).

So you like garlic...

I would like to go to England for the first three decades of the 20th century and converse with and become friends with a young man who attended and taught at Oxford.

The man liked to fiddle with words and tell stories;)

Goes by the name of Ronald I beleive (brilliant fellow):D

Feudal Japan as a member of the samurai class would be interesting.

The upper class during the Renaissance, too.

Can we pick centuries in the future? If so, I'd pick the year 2500, just to see how fascinating the future will be. :D

If it has to be the past:

I'd want to go back 100 years to see what the area now known as Bolingbrook, Illinois looked like :p

Back to creation :D

Back to 1985 to see the Bears win the Super Bowl

Back to 1908 to see the Cubs win the World Series

Chicago, cir. 1950 (no specific reason)

And I think I'd like to see the Coliseum (sp?) completely built and standing its full height. I'd make sure I brought a digital camera. :p

I would have to go to Italy during the Renaissance. The chance to meet Machiavelli, etc would be fantastic.

I would also liked to have lived in England during the 100s years war to see Nationalism at it's finest.
