You wonder what is hiding behind the "grim" nature of a wraith?
You wonder where does a Maia Queen spend her holidays?
You wonder what is a Nazgul thinking of while he's buying a ring for his girlfriend?
Don't wonder anymore, because here they come-The Exclusive Interviews of The Guild of Tolkienology's Members !!! :D

We are one community and we spend quite a lot of time together, but just as one Fair Lady said somewhere;) :
Who are we? Nicknamed funny people, each of us barely knows, ...but indeed, we feel as friends!
We have gone through battles (debates), ambushes (discussions), sorrows (lost of friends) and joys (holidays) and we are yet to experience more! So wouldn't it be better if we know each other if not entirely, at least quite well?

What is going to be posted in this Thread is a collection of Interviews of each member which, I hope, is going to enrich year after year. For we own our Guild a better look at our personalities, we own it to ourselves!
And I'll try to give it to you!

I'm terribly sorry for the shortness of the posts but otherwise they appear to be too long and "fluffy".

Lhunithiliel :
Maybe “working” within and for it I’ll finally find the courage to make my intentions work and come true….

Finduilas :
What's the history behind your 'deep thoughts'?
Lhunithiliel :
I haven’t got them…. I used to have a quote from the “Hitchhiker” ‘cause I love this book….. but some things changed and … Ah! Well… Now I’m just a “wraith” living in both worlds – the material and visible one; and in that of the “twilight” where the thought wanders to seek for truths…. Will it ever find them…

Finduilas :
Lhun, we all know you are an erudite wraith. Tell us the names of five great books you advise us to read.
Lhunithiliel :
Ha! Do I look like that? :p :D….. Well, all I can tell you are the books that I like and would like to read…
1/ Tolkien OF COURSE :D All of his works!;

5/ the myths of all nations (including the sacred books of all religions)…. No! The list is far too incomplete….

Finduilas :
Imagine you own a Tolkien tattoo studio. I want to have a tattoo. Advise me what's stylish this season.
Lhunithiliel :
A small elegant tattoo of the word “wraith” in some of those exquisite elvish letters. ;) :D

Finduilas :
If you could come back on earth in another life, what creature would you like to be?
Lhunithiliel :
Hmmmmmm …. I’d try the life of an eagle….. and then that of a dolphin….and then…. that of a dog…. and then……In fact…Wouldn’t it be wonderful to experience all forms of life of all creatures?….But! To be able to keep the memory of being this one and then the other!

Finduilas :
If you could have lunch with Tolkien and he asked for your recommendations on his works, what would you tell him?
Lhunithiliel :
Me?! Recommending to Tolkien?!????? My God! Would I dare do such a thing? …

The end.

* * *

As you can see, our "wraith" is both modest and self-confident;shy;) and lively! But the list is very long...so judge for yourself...;) For her words speak more than mine!

Interviewee : Eledhwen
Interviewer : Finduilas

Finduilas steps forward nervously. For she has heard of Eledhwen-the "mighty" Tolkienologist who numerous people respect. However, Finduilas knows not much of the person itself but of the skillful Tolkienologist. She has prepared a bunch of questions in order to find out what is the person hiding behind the name Eledhwen like...And here she is:

Finduilas :
What is your full name?
Eledhwen :
Janet Georgiou

Finduilas :
Where are you from?
Eledhwen :
Most of my family are from the English Lake District, where I went to school. My Dad was a scouser, and his dad was a Lancashire Fusilier who fought in the Somme during WWI - Tolkien's Regiment. I heard he drew inspiration for Hobbits from the enlisted men, and I sometimes wonder if he noticed my grandad.

Finduilas :
How old are you?
Eledhwen :
47

Finduilas :
Any sisters or brothers?
Eledhwen :
2 brothers, 2 sisters

Finduilas :
The best thing in your character?
Eledhwen :
Empathy.

Finduilas :
What's there in your rubbish bin this morning?
Eledhwen :
Uneaten food.

Finduilas :
The brightest memory from your childhood?
Eledhwen :
My rowing boat on Lake Windermere.

Finduilas :
5 things without which you wouldn't be able to live?

Apart from the obvious; Jesus, a good read, a listening friend, open countryside and something to swap out onto.

Finduilas :
What do you believe in?
Eledhwen :
The fallen-ness of man and the power of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ to put us right.

Finduilas :
If you could choose when to be born, you would have ben born in which epoch?
Eledhwen :
If you mean not this one, then probably the Iron Age.

Finduilas :
The best advice you have ever got?
Eledhwen :
Don't give up.

Finduilas :
If you where sentenced to death, what would your last dinner would consist of?
Eledhwen :
Grilled fresh salmon (we don't have DP here, but we did when I was a child, and I had a morbid fear that I would be sentenced for something I hadn't done.)

Finduilas :
Mostly what do you spend your money on?
Eledhwen :
Necessities.

Finduilas :
What's there in your fridge?
Eledhwen :
Basics, plus a couple of cold beers and a small stack of chocolate.

Finduilas :
What's the meaning of life?

When did you first kissed a girl/boy?
Eledhwen :
At age 14, after a disco in Windermere.

Finduilas :
Where would you like to live if you could choose?

Finduilas :
Are you an optimist or a pessimist?
Eledhwen :
A realist.

Finduilas :
What's your attitude towards alcohol?
Eledhwen :
My dad was a recovered alcoholic, so I'm all for moderation. I only drink stuff that tastes good. I like real ale and scrumpy cider.

Finduilas :
Do you like your life?
Eledhwen :
Yes.

Finduilas :
How would your best friend describe you as?

Tolkien is an author, writer, just as many others. What do you think makes him so intriguing and what do you think is the difference in his works that gather so many people of different ages, sexes, etc. together?
Eledhwen :
When you read Tolkien's stories, you do not have to deliberately suspend your disbelief, because the story pulls you into an attitude of willing belief.

Finduilas :
Has your impression towards the Guild changed since you signed in?
Eledhwen :
I have more respect for the leaders as I know more about them.

Finduilas :
Is this change for better or worse?
Eledhwen :
Better.

Finduilas :
One simple sentence wich has remained in the history-"In the hole in the ground there lived a hobbit".What thoughts does this sentence arise in you?
Eledhwen :
It was the beginning of the end of the written story of Middle Earth, culminating in the said Hobbit sailing into the West.

Finduilas :
Do you think that Tolkien has perfected his writing skills after every work he wrote?
Eledhwen :
Tolkien went up and down. At one time he was assailed by modernist thoughts and tried to adapt his work to a spherical earth, which accompanied doubts about the Eden Myth. Thank God, he got over it and became comfortable with a flat First Age and also Adam and Eve.

Finduilas :
Are you satisfied with the knowledge and atmosphere the Guild gives you?
Eledhwen :
I'm not sure. I've not contributed as much as I would like recently because of other commitments. I am not dissatisfied.

Forgive me.

Finduilas :
What gift would make you extremely happy?
Eledhwen :
I really don't know.

Finduilas :
Your idea for a perfect house?
Eledhwen :
Rivendell.

Finduilas :
What do you think will the Guild help you in real life with?
Eledhwen :
Not a lot, though I'd like to meet everyone at the Tolkien Convention, if it happens.

Finduilas :
What's the history behind your 'deep thoughts'?
Eledhwen :
A guy called Ashleigh Brilliant made a series of postcards in the 1980s with stuff like "Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you." and "Why dont you write and give me a chance not to reply!" I was amused by the one that asked "Is there a life before breakfast?"

Eledhwen's deep thoughts :
If you want to walk on the water you have to get out of the boat.

The end.

So here is Eledhwen, the person. Go ask questions!:D

Eledhwen's words for herself :

: Eledhwen - a descriptive name given to Morwen.

Age: 47

A Christian. My Church website: www.sfc-uk.org

Occupation: I'm the secretary of the local Chamber of Commerce.

Family: Husband (Maths and chess!), grown-up son (computers) and daughter (music and art), and three young daughters age 10, 8 and 6.

Interests: Reading, writing (just completed a screenwriting course), walking - preferably on mountains, but the Downs will do, singing and playing violin (not both at the same time - the violin wobbles), drawing and painting (when I get the chance).

Guild Rank: None. I may get round to being tested... maybe.

Favourite Tolkien literature? It's all good, I like the FotR at Crickhollow, where Frodo learns his secret isn't so secret after all; and I like the story of Beren and Luthien (incl BolT version). For big drama, the Fall of Gondolin as described in BolT2.

I like the films Beleg_Strongbow listed - they're pacey and well-timed. I like the LotR films too, as films. No all-time favourite though.

Taste in music - anything dynamic and good. Also some quiet stuff. So - Tchaikowsky, Hildegard von Bingen, Status Quo, Enya...

My aims for this year are: 1. to get my screenplay portfolio sorted; 2. to get plans for an arts centre underway in my town; 3. to go somewhere interesting this summer.

My aim for this week: To go for a pub lunch in the Eagle and Child, Oxford EDIT: (achieved - even though the car broke down!)

(I had to delete and remake this post as it wouldn't let me change the photo!)

Greetings fellow members.

I'm sorry I set my foot in this hall (I know you all have had enough of me lately--just kidding;) I hope it's not true *praying for it*). But since our indispensable interviewer, Finduilas, is having some internet connection related problems (and some of you ;) are impatient to see continuation of this thread), I had offered to help her with posting (and only posting...) the interviews and my offer was accepted. So here we are...

Interviewer - Finduilas

Finduilas has heard so much about the Manveru wonderful person and that's why she's extremely nervous before the meeting. She wonders how to begin the conversation what words to say so that not to look stupid. However, every nervousness disappears when she sees the magnificent Don Juan ;) face of the person in front of her. He attracts with his calmness and irresistible charm. He seems like an educated youngster who is actually mature enough to satisfy a woman;) Finduilas, however, has heard of his one and only LOVE and knows that his words are enchanting and his voice can spell a woman ;) She is won at the exact moment and already feels him as a best friend because she sees the great qualities in his character! No... it's derived from Polish word 'tropic' --> 'to track'. He's like Aragorn in some way...;)

Finduilas:
Are you an optimist or a pessimist?
Manveru:
Definitely an OPTIMIST! I don't like to see world in dark colors;). What's good in that?

Finduilas:
What's your attitude towards alcohol?
Manveru:
I drink .... but mostly BEER;) and I am not an alcoholic...:D it's not my whole world. I find time on other stuff alike.

Finduilas:
That's good to know when to stop... Are u the same with other things in life too?
Manveru:
Sure... too much is always too much... of everything maybe except Tolkien's works... wow I am a weirdo, I guess;)

Finduilas:
Do you like your life?
Manveru:
I love IT!

Finduilas:
Did u make it such or is it the Destiny?
Manveru:
I made it... every person is a 'blacksmith' of her/his life...

Finduilas:
Yes, u speak of life with capital letters... Do u respect IT so much?
Manveru:
Yup.

Finduilas:
How would your best friend describe you as?
Manveru:
You have to ask him... not me;). Seriously... I don't know. I think in a good way.

Finduilas:
Who's the last person who saw you naked?
Manveru:
Where do you take these qs from?;) well... that would be my mum... LONG AGO... when I was a baby;) I guess people don't wish to see me naked? I wonder why?:D

Finduilas:
Have they told u this?
Manveru:
I usually walk dressed up.:D

Finduilas:
Do you have a favourite joke?
Manveru:
There's so many... I can't think of one right now, I guess maybe...

Finduilas:
How would you make a declaration of love?
Manveru:
?? I don't really know... I think when love will finally come... I shall know what to say.

Finduilas:
Do you really think you would..? Haven't you thought about this?
Manveru:
No, I actually haven't... I think the words must flow from one's heart and not to be learnt by heart - know what I mean? It's an impuls.

Finduilas:
Do you have nicknames?
Manveru:
Yeah... like that one from TTF. Would that be fine?

Finduilas:
Yeah, it's fine;). How do you entertain yourself?

What would you like to achieve in the future?
Manveru:
Success in life.

Finduilas:
What does 'a Tolkienologist' mean?
Manveru:
'wholly addicted to Tolkien's works'

Finduilas:
Tolkien is an author, writer, just as many others. What do you think makes him so intriguing and what do you think is the difference in his works that gather so many people of different ages, sexes, etc. together?
Manveru:
His imaginery world... IT really has sth magical that doesn't let you come by IT just like that I don't really know what's holding me inside... when I find IT I will let you know.

Finduilas:
Is it the magic?
Manveru:
It's not 'magic' as in 'Harry Potter'. It's SOMETHING... sorry I cannot name IT properly... I guess each one of us sees SOMETHING differently this SOMETHING is what hooks us all to these works what it is? Elves? maybe or maybe that's what is all that gathers us-his magic... of writing? 'Cause he achieves to write sth which will be accepted differently by different people.

Finduilas:
Oh yes... he wrote like noone else... Is he your favourite author?
Manveru:
Definitely.

Finduilas:
Any others?
Manveru:
AS --> Andrzej Sapkowski, he is called 'Polish Tolkien' by some funs in Poland but I think he shouldn't be. Tolkien is (was) Tolkien and ... AS is AS he wrote beautiful "Sage of the Witchman".

Finduilas:
One simple sentence wich has remained in the history-"In the hole in the ground there lived a hobbit". What thoughts does this sentence arise in you?
Manveru:
Of great story...

Finduilas:
Do you think that Tolkien has perfected his writing skills after every work he wrote?
Manveru:
One cannot perfect sth that is already perfect;) no... I'm kidding. I think yes.... cause nobody's perfect... he tried at least.

Finduilas:
Are you satisfied with the knowledge and atmosphere the Guild gives you?
Manveru:
Are you kidding me? OF COURSE!! IMHO this guild is the best but maybe my opinion is that, because I am on IT's "side".

Finduilas:
Do u respect Tolkien? And who's the person u respect the most?
Manveru:
I respect every person (without emphasis;)). I think everyone deserves respect.

Finduilas:
Do you have any ideas for the future of the Guild and things you would like to change?
Manveru:
Hmm... nothing right now... I think boss (ehem... Lhun) is fixing sth for sure.

Finduilas:
What do you think of the fact that 'a wraith' is ruling over the Guild?
Manveru:
Oh... that question...hehe hmmm... groovie I mean... why not? As long as everything is OK... and IT is:D.

Finduilas:
Would you like to say something to the Mistress of the Guild? To surprise Her?/Would you like to say something to the members of the Guild? To surprise them?
Manveru:
SURPRISE! To both...

Finduilas:
Your idea for a perfect house?
Manveru:
Nice cousy cabin somewhere in the mountains (peace and quiet;)) it can be near some lake, too.

Finduilas:
What do you think will the Guild help you in real life with?
Manveru:
It has helped me with my shyness so far;). I really was a shy person... maybe I am still one?

Finduilas:
Describe your typical day?
Manveru:
I get up early (6.30 a.m.). Then I ride a bike for I guess 30 min (I must keep fit). I usually go at the pond neat my town...there I like to meditate for a little (it helps me to concentrate on a day). Then I get back home to eat a breakfast.... shall I continue (am I not borring you?;)). After breakfast I usually watch TV (if there is sth) or spend my time on the forum (TTF rulez!) or read some books and other such stuff...
I usually go to bed at 00.00a.m.
and so on... the whole vacation.

Finduilas:
What gift would make you extremely happy?
Manveru:
Usually every gift makes me happy.... if it is from a person with good intentions.

Finduilas:
Manveru means Michael. That's good, I haven't spoken to an archangel yet. So how was your day-did you take anyone's soul?
Manveru:
Nope... I'm on vacation (actually archangels have them, too;))

Finduilas:
Do you believe in life after death? In the Pharaoh's Curse? In Loch Ness? That Elvis lives on?
Manveru:
1. Yes, I do. 2. No, I don't (I guess I like their secrets too much). 3. yeah... it must be awesome... 4. I don't care... I don't like Elvis much...;)

Finduilas:
If love/ friendship had a colour, what colour would it be?
Manveru:
Hmm... green? like the TTF's boards;)

Finduilas:
Blondes or brunettes?
Manveru:
I can never decide... both:D

Finduilas:
What's the history behind your 'deep thoughts'?
Manveru:
I was not only shy guy... also a lazy one;) so when I read about Benjamin Franklin on American literature classes and then I read his "Autobiography" I found that sentence... and I liked it (still like it very much) it is my motivation ... one can say as for the other... It's another one ... but from a 'local' writer... Andrzej Sapkowski (I mentioned him once).

Manveru's Deep thoughts:
'Up sluggard, and waste not life; in the grave will be sleeping enough.' (Benjamin Franklin) 'Read, read, not only RPG and video.' (AS)

The End.

Interviewee - Mrs. Maggott
Interviewer - Finduilas

This time Finduilas is shaking with nervousness... She knows not how the meeting will pass and has no idea of what should say... For it is a great pleasure and honour for her to meet a person like Mrs. Maggott. All participations and discussions of that Grand Lady have proved her knowledge and won the respect of every single member. It is this great respect that makes Finduilas step forward slowly and with admiration. The Lady shows off matureness and yet a great deal of desire to explore the world and find everything she still hasn?t. The Calmness in her eyes calms Finduilas down a little more and makes her feel a little more comfortable. Nonetheless, she still starts the conversation respectfully and yet her enthusiasm can easily be felt...

Finduilas:
What is your full name?
Mrs. Maggott:
Valerie Ann (Hughes my maiden name) Protopapas.

Finduilas:
Where are you from?
Mrs. Maggott:
Born in Queens, New York City on Memorial Day (May 30th) 1941.

Finduilas:
How old are you?
Mrs. Maggott:
62

Finduilas:
Any sisters or brothers?
Mrs. Maggott:
One sister who died last September.

Finduilas:
The best thing in your character?
Mrs. Maggott:
I'm thinking....... got more time? Probably my rotten sense of humor which is frequently utilized at inappropriate times.

Finduilas:
What's there in your rubbish bin this morning?
Mrs. Maggott:
Ah, garbage! If garbage were money, I'd make Bill Gates look poor! Well, let's see... aside from eggshells and a teabag from breakfast, there's the stuff I used to treat the dog's tail (long story) as well as several "trial efforts" on the computer.

Finduilas:
The brightest memory from your childhood?
Mrs. Maggott:
I had a very rich (emotionally, not financially) and happy childhood. I would say Christmas and summers going to the beach with my mom, dad, sister and grandmother. We went so often that we had an old black Dodge that could have driven itself to Jones Beach!

Finduilas:
5 things without which you wouldn't be able to live?
Mrs. Maggott:
In no particular order: those I love, cats (and other animals), music, books and assorted silliness. I also love to look at many things and find beauty in the oddest places. But, in fact, I guess we can live without a lot of the things that we otherwise think we couldn't do without.....

Finduilas:
What do you believe in?
Mrs. Maggott:
I am a Christian or at least I try to be. Far too many people believe that many evil people are "bad Christians" when, in fact, they aren't any kind of Christian even though they may call themselves by that name.

Finduilas:
If you could choose when to be born, you would have ben born in which epoch?
Mrs. Maggott:
Of course, the romace of "olden days" is wonderful, but not when you think of dentists and doctors. I cannot say that I regret living in a world where unremitting pain is not necessarily one's lot in life!

Finduilas:
The best advice you have ever got?
Mrs. Maggott:
Not to go on a planned trip into New York City on September 11th, 2001.

Finduilas:
If you where sentnced to death, what would your last dinner would consist of?
Mrs. Maggott:
A cup of tea. I'm afraid scary things just kill my appetite. I can't eat before I go to the dentist, so I doubt very much if I would be much in the mood for a big meal before I went to the gallows!

Finduilas:
Mostly what do you spend your money on?
Mrs. Maggott:
Alas, I love so many things. I can resist anything but temptation: books, music, knick-knacks, "sparklies" (jewelry), animals (VETS!!), but that's the fun stuff. Most of our household money is spent on sustaining our existence.

Finduilas:
What's there in your fridge?
Mrs. Maggott:
There are some strange things in the back which require hunting out, but otherwise, milk, orange juice, butter, eggs, a covered bowl of mixed cat food for Tigger and Little Girl (Olivia eats a separate diet...she's special!), bottles of lemonade and other cold drinks for the summer, cheese and some fresh veggies and fruit (if they don't wilt) - and, of course, the proverbial left-overs for my son's lunch.

Finduilas:
What's the meaning of life?
Mrs. Maggott:
I guess to be as kind and caring as you can be while you're here; to try to make a difference if possible for people when the opportunity arises and to avoid hurting people if at all possible. Life is a sort of "test" (which I am presently failing, but that's neither here nor there..). It is not for nothing that we are told that some of the kindnesses we do count more than great acts of heroism for, as they say, thereby some have "entertained Angels" without knowing it when they perform some small kindness for their fellow man.

Finduilas:
When did you first kissed a girl/boy?
Mrs. Maggott:
I was in high school but that's a long, long time ago.

Finduilas:
Where would you like to live if you could choose?
Mrs. Maggott:
On Asharoken, a narrow strip of land that runs between Northport and Eatons Neck. It has Long Island Sound on one side and Northport Bay on the other. I love the look and smell of the place, but, alas, it is not for the likes of me.

Finduilas:
Favourite style of music?
Mrs. Maggott:
Very eclectic. Love classical (especially Ralph Vaughn-Williams, Sibelius, Grieg, Hovanhess, Delius etc.) but also some blues, jazz (cool), folk, country (some) and the oldies of my youth in the 50s (also some) and before (20s through 40s). And, of course, there are show and movie scores and the really old songs of the turn of the last century.

Finduilas:
Favourite movies, books?
Mrs. Maggott:
I love the old "fright" films before they became slasher movies: The Thing (the first one), Them and all the mutant creatures. I also like mysteries sometimes with some "horror" elements (The Rosary Murders, The Changeling) and the Harry Potter stuff - books and films - action adventure like the Indiana Jones films and a lot of the "kid stuff" of Disney, the old pirate films (Captain Blood) and the new one too (Pirates of the Carribbean) etc. Books - mysteries, history, on and on - too much to list.

To be continued...

Finduilas:
Do you like animals?
Mrs. Maggott:
See above.

Finduilas:
Are you an optimist or a pessimist?
Mrs. Maggott:
A pessimist. That way, all of my surprises are happy ones!

Finduilas:
What's your attitude towards alcohol?
Mrs. Maggott:
I find nothing wrong with a social drink, a glass of wine or even something stronger as long as you take the drink and the drink doesn't take you.

Finduilas:
Do you like your life?
Mrs. Maggott:
Ah! Well, at the moment, I can only say that were I asked if I wished to do it over I would not say yes.

Finduilas:
How would your best friend describe you as?
Mrs. Maggott:
Ah! Well. Best friend. I can't really say. I'm afraid "best friends" are rather thin on the ground at the moment.

Finduilas:
Whose the last person who saw you naked?
Mrs. Maggott:
My husband, but we are too used to each other to notice (thank God!).

Finduilas:
Do you have a favourite joke?
Mrs. Maggott:
I used to have a lot of good jokes. I tell them well (one of my few gifts), but I can't think of a "favorite" one.

Finduilas:
How would you make a declaration of love?
Mrs. Maggott:
At this point in time, all such have been made.

Finduilas:
Do you have nicknames?
Mrs. Maggott:
Val or sometimes my daughter and son-in-law refer to me as "The Mother". I hope it doesn't have anything else after it...

Finduilas:
How do you entertain yourself?
Mrs. Maggott:
I paint, do stained glass, fool around on the internet in sites like these, read, create stuff and watch old Charlie Chan films (forgot to mention them above).

Finduilas:
What would you like to achieve in the future?
Mrs. Maggott:
Not go broke when my husband loses his job in September.

Finduilas:
What does 'a Tolkienologist' mean?
Mrs. Maggott:
To me or in general? I assumed it meant someone who liked to "delve" into the man and his works in more than a superficial manner. However, I may be wrong given that I do that (being wrong) so well.

Finduilas:
Tolkien is an author, writer, just as many others. What do you think makes him so intriguing and what do you think is the difference in his works that gather so many people of different ages, sexes, etc. together?
Mrs. Maggott:
I think that he "raises our sights" and gives us a glimpse of things greater and more grand than our petty day-to-day world - a glimpse of something for which all men hunger in their souls.
Even more importantly, he leads us to believe that we just might be able to participate in such a world.

Finduilas:
Has your impression towards the Guild changed since you signed in?
Mrs. Maggott:
I think that the Guild is much as I hoped it would be, a great place with great people doing serious and wonderful things. I am only sad that I have been so lacking in helping to create that place.

Finduilas:
Is this change for better or worse?
Mrs. Maggott:
I don't think that I have been here long enough to know about "change" since change is always ongoing. One would have to have been in the Guild for a considerable period of time to note whether the changes have been superficial or fundamental.

Finduilas:
One simple sentence wich has remained in the history-"In the hole in the ground there lived a hobbit".What thoughts does this sentence arise in you?
Mrs. Maggott:
A period in my life when I was young, my children were small and my life was fundamentally quite happy albeit with all those problems that accrue in the process of living. It is a pleasant memory.

Finduilas:
Do you think that Tolkien has perfected his writing skills after every work he wrote?
Mrs. Maggott:
I think Tolkien's skills were "top notch" fairly early on. However, I do think that he wrote in a different way depending upon what he was conveying to his readers. Was he lecturing? Was he creating a story for his beloved children? Or was he being a "co-creator" with his God in the great "English myth" he wished so desparately to bring into being. In each of these, his writing technique is different, but no less perfected.

Finduilas:
Are you satisfied with the knowledge and atmosphere the Guild gives you?
Mrs. Maggott:
Yes. Any failure has been on my part, not the Guild's.

Finduilas:
Do you have any ideas for the future of the Guild and things you would like to change?
Mrs. Maggott:
The only thing about which I am concerned is the feeling some people have about the need for constant change and the addition of new projects. So often this leads to earlier important and worthy projects being left incomplete. One of my great failures as a human being has been my lack of "follow through". I start many things and complete few. This is not a good way to live nor does it encourage success. I would rather see the Guild work diligently on completing its ongoing projects before it introduces two or three new ones. I know that we live in an age of the 10 minute attention span, but that is not necessarily good. Imagine if Tolkien had wandered off to a different project every week or so!

Finduilas:
What do you think of the fact that 'a wraith' is ruling over the Guild?
Mrs. Maggott:
If all of the Wraiths were that lovely, the Fellowship would have been chasing them and not the other way round!

Finduilas:
Would you like to say something to the Mistress of the Guild? To surprise Her?
Mrs. Maggott:
Surprise? No. Just an address of loving admiration for all of her efforts on our behalf. If that is a surprise, fine! But I have discovered that most "surprises" are hardly welcome (like the water in the basement!).

Finduilas:
Would you like to say something to the members of the Guild? To surprise them?
Mrs. Maggott:
Ditto the above.

Finduilas:
What are you most thankful to the Guild for?
Mrs. Maggott:
The opportunity to be a member.

Finduilas:
If you had three wishes what would they be?
Mrs. Maggott:
Alas, at my age financial security would be one. Reasonably good health for myself and those I love would be two and that my handicapped son might be able to live independently and make a life for himself before my husband and I are no longer here to help him.

Finduilas:
Interests?
Mrs. Maggott:
I have mentioned my crafts - stained glass, painting, sewing - and, of course, reading, walking (when I am able) and "playing" on the net.

Finduilas:
Who do you love the most?
Mrs. Maggott:
It would be easy to say Christ and I would wish that were so, but I don't know if I am strong enough for that. I love my husband and children (although I could cheerfully throttle them all at least once a week) and my many friends. But most of my "special friends" - including my beloved sister - are gone or moved away or have gone on in their lives without me and that is hard.

Finduilas:
Where would you like to spend the spring season? The summer? The autumn? The winter?
Mrs. Maggott:
I am a homebody, so I would say "home" to all of the above.

Finduilas:
While listening to which song, you can't refuse the offer to dance with somebody?
Mrs. Maggott:
I don't dance; never did.

Finduilas:
What should someone do to melt your heart?
Mrs. Maggott:
Bring me a kitten.... (But my husband would probably shoot them!)

Finduilas:
Do you believe in real love? How can you be sure that you have found it? Are you scared you may miss it?
Mrs. Maggott:
Ah, a question for our younger members. Yes, there is "true love", but while it may begin in shooting stars and breaking hearts, it doesn't stay that way, nor should it. In time, such love becomes something much richer and deeper and those who spend their lives attempting to "recapture" the emotions of "first love" miss the whole thing in the end.

Finduilas:
Would like to have the qualities Tolkien has?
Mrs. Maggott:
I certainly would love to have his "stick-to-itiveness". My greatest failing is my lack of follow through. It has really rather made a hash of my life.

Finduilas:
Would you like to have the qualities of someone?
Mrs. Maggott:
I would like many good qualities that I either do not possess or do not possess in sufficient quantity for them to make a difference. But that's my fault and no one else's.

Finduilas:
Do you believe that Fate is leading your life?
Mrs. Maggott:
No. Although we live in an environment over which we have very limited control (we can't make it rain or stop the rain when it comes), most of the things that affect our lives are of our own making in the end. There's an old saying about the set of sails on a ship. Ships sailing east or west both have the same winds, but it's the set of the sails that allow them to travel in opposite directions. Although the wind is beyond our control, we alone "set our sails".

Finduilas:
5 things you hate?
Mrs. Maggott:
Telemarketers; rudeness; cleaning the cat boxes; going to the dentist/doctor; disorder.

Finduilas:
5 things you love?
Mrs. Maggott:
Things of beauty whatever they may be; good music; good books; friendly gatherings; the shank of the year: October through December - Halloween through Christmas.

Finduilas:
Do you like sport? Favourite one?
Mrs. Maggott:
I used to like baseball, but then the Giants moved to San Francisco.

Finduilas:
Describe your typical day?
Mrs. Maggott:
If I'm lucky, it's profoundly dull.

Finduilas:
What gift would make you extremely happy?
Mrs. Maggott:
I wouldn't mind winning a few million so that I wouldn't have to worry about our future (including Jay's).

Finduilas:
Your idea for a perfect house?
Mrs. Maggott:
Well, I always loved old Victorian houses, but these days, all on one floor would be super - I live in a split level with stairs everywhere.

Finduilas:
What do you think will the Guild help you in real life with?
Mrs. Maggott:
Well, it has made me finish at least one project (my lecture on the Third Age). Anything that forces me to actually finish something is good.

Finduilas:
What's the history behind your 'deep thoughts'?
Mrs. Maggott:
They are kind of self-explanatory. Good people cannot "hide" from wickedness without being responsible for the consequences (see LOTR) and Fr. Hopko's little comment impressed me greatly because we live in an era wherein believers are held up as superstitious fools while unbelievers are frequently considered to be holders of the "scientific" way of thought. In fact, both sides of the issue involve matters of belief since neither side can "prove" its case scientifically. Therefore, the opposite of "belief" is not "fact", but "doubt".

Mrs. Maggott's Deep Thoughts:
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Edmund Burke - The opposite of faith is not reason; the opposite of faith is doubt. V. Rev. Thomas Hopko

The End.

Mrs. Maggott's words for herself:

Mrs. Maggott

Age: 62 (on May 30th)

Religion: I am an Orthodox Christian; my husband is a Deacon in the Orthodox Church in America and I sing in the choir (and haven't been shot at yet!).

Position or Rank in the Guild: None at the moment. I want to take some test, but I keep forgetting to do it - and that does not bode well for my eventual placement.

Occupation: Artist/Craftsman/Iconographer (paint, fabric, stained glass); also run a legal typing service.

Married with 2 children (daughter 37, son 33)

Ethnic background: Celtic, English, Hobbit (and maybe a little troll...)

Favorites Composers: Ralph Vaughn Williams, Alan Hovanhess, Jean Sibelius, Celtic music, soundtracks.

Favorite Books: Tolkien, medieval history, mysteries (Robert Van Gulik) the Harry Potter books, lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of books......

Animals: favorite: cats but I have a Peke; I love all animals but I can live far away from spiders and other creepy crawlies (except ladybugs, lightening bugs and butterflies). However, I do love reptiles (the non-poisonous variety).

Films: I love all the old, B sci-fi B&W films from the 50s. I like monstor movies, but I hate these "splatter films". A good scary film (the original Psycho) is fine, but many of these films are just disgusting. Some of their directors have Mr. Jackson's problem: they have never learned that less is often more.

What do I hope to do this year? Probably reach 63 without falling apart - but winning the lottery would be nice!

Unfortunatelly I (me, Manveru--not Finduilas;)) failed to find any photos of Mrs. M. If someone finds them or if Mrs. M posts them, just let me know and I'll update this post. Now from me, Finduilas, your fave interviewer... and the the rest of the crew (yeah... don't forget the poster;)) it's good bye. Don't forget to watch another episode of What Thorondor Knows?.:D
