Now, I'd like to ask you, the members of the Guild, if you would agree if I open a thread dedicated to letter writing.
Here are some more details:
The thread will be NOT about Tolkien's letters but about our own work. There will be a topic set (for example, The War in The Third Age when Sauron tries to get every single people in the ME on his side) and we will write letters on that topic. To clear this up, here: If we take the topic with Sauron, then one will start the letter-writing with a letter by Sauron to, let's say, Sauron calling him to order but with nice diplomatic words. In other words, one will write a diplomatic letter by Sauron to A Lord of Any Realm in ME. Then a second person will answer his letter with the decision he has taken...and so on and so on. Thus a whole war will be made but mostly a diplomatic one.
Well, this is the initial idea as I see it. It came to my mind while I was reading a book by Umberto Eko - Baudolino. There the main character makes up stories and later they become true.
Opinions?

Sounds like fun... and a lot of creative work!
(though I never liked writing letters, but, as I said once, TTF boards made all my bad habits to go away... well, maybe not all;))

I agree. It does sound like it will be quite a lot of fun, especially if we can be sarcastic  (at times)... But anyway, I could (and probably will) have a lot of fun making death threats and the like, then sending them about. Yes, this is going to be very fun... hehehe... But unfortunately, it is 4:43 AM here, and I'm going to my first day of Sophomore year of Highschool in 3 hours, so I've got to get ready... but hey, why not a little:
(This is something I said to someone when they told me that Tom Bombadil and the Scouring of the Shire were the two worst things that Tolkien ever did.)
Manen veryalye? Uvanimo! Uvanimo! Na epesselye sauran! Nar le more nat! Tyarlye nyere! Heca, saura nat!
I'm not sure if it's totally right, but it's something...
Finduilas

:)
I'm happy you like the idea.
Anyway, any suggestions for the first topic?
Oh, and, Khôr’nagan, what does that mean?...Suppose it's not something nice...
Eriol
09-04-2003, 04:29 PM
I like it very much too. It could be expanded to non-warlike issues, right?
I can think of many imaginary letter instances. Gandalf to Bombadil; Sauron to Celebrimbor; Ar-Pharazôn to Sauron; Sauron to the Witch-King (before he got his Ring); and these are the most sensible.
What about Fëanor to Morgoth demanding the Silmarils? Beren to Morgoth, for the same reason, trying to move Morgoth's heart by talking about his love?
The possibilities are endless :D.
Finduilas
09-04-2003, 09:49 PM
Yes, there are many possibilities...but why don't we start with something more lighthearted, for example, a letter writing between Beren and Luthien, Aragorn and Arwen, or...well, love letters which would consist of war information too...:o
Don't know, I'm kinda romantic...:o
But your suggestions were very nice.
Eriol
09-04-2003, 09:54 PM
I'm all for lighthearted and romantic :)
But your opening post suggested (to me) that you wanted "diplomatic" letters. I much prefer romantic ones, myself :).

What's this? A spring-time frenzy?;)
Just kidding:D
So what will be the first 'topic' for this "letters-typing-thing"? Who is going to start? And when? Oh! And where? In this thread?
Khôr’nagan
09-05-2003, 01:07 AM
"How could you? Monster! Monster! Your nickname is foul-one! You are a black thing! You cause sorrow! Begone, foul thing!"
And I also have Gaakh matlatuk!, which is Black Speech for, "May you all die!" Or, you could just say Gaakh matlat!, which means "May you die!"
But, back to what's at hand... I Think I could suffice in a romantic-based letter, but it would be much easier just to make up death threats... But, we can get to that later! (Giving me time to make a bunch to use when the time comes... mwaahaahahaa!) Oh, and by the way... "I love you" (in Sindarin) is mélon le, isn't it? (I'm not sure, and I'd better be if we're doing romantic stuff). Also, could someone who knows Sindarin take a look at this?
Gweston na nín faer mélon le a nobôr le an uir.
It's suposed to be: "I swear by my soul to love you and be faithful to you for eternity."
Is it right?

How about Sauron writing to a King of Men seducing him with the Ring?
And Findi, let's start this thing going! :)
YOU pick the name and open it in this sub-forum.
All right?

I am also looking for people who would be perhaps interested to continue the "What if?" - game..........  :(

i just got a new idea but i am not sure if its new or it have already been such an idea but any way.I thought why dont we start writing something like short stories that can be included somewhere in the Tolkien' s works. With other words to make an extended version of The Lord of the Rings for example
Opinions?

drjekil_bg, here is where you can read the "What if?" - game (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6189) . :)
I am so sad when I see it so quiet and not being developed nowadays.... :(
But .... let's speak about the new activities.
Lately in this section of the Guild - the "artistic" one  - there have been a couple of nice new ideas offered, discussed and practically supported by the members of the guild.
So... WHY haven't the initiators of these projects done any step towards implementing them?
I would like to congratulate drjekil_bg for his "Unfinished Tales". It's fun and I think this thread can give a great opportunity to every one who feels like writing short stories.
Then....we are awaiting for the "Letters"- activity to start. The idea received such a great welcome. Findi?
Mrs.Maggot has almost completely abandoned us :( .....but I remember she had a great idea too. BTW, drjekil_bg, her suggestion seems to be very close to what seem to be your new one! ;) :)
So........... You see........... There are opportunities to let free our imagination !
Let's do it! :)

You seemed a little 'tense', big bro...;):D (which is a good sign... believe me).

I think that Glittering Caves is going down,so i will ask some questions and give you a new idea.first i want to know what happend with Finduilas's idea about the letters then i didnt understand that you people like my idea about our Extended version of Lord of the Rings or other of the Tolkien's works.
And last here is my idea that i hope i will explain clearly for all
I was watching the league of extordinary gentalmen when this idea came to me.Why we dont write down the special abilities all of our chacarter that we use there name have and then begin a story where everyone of them have part.something like X-men book or something like that.
Any questions and opinions ???

Well first we should write down our special abilities(they can be imagined if we want). For example Drjekil special ability is to become Mrhyde.

I'm terribly sorry for delaying the first topic of the letter-writing activity.
I believe that since this would be our first task it should be something lighthearted...so let's put the wars aside for a while ok?;)
Romantic topics are welcome for now, as for the war topics, you can suggest and after we have gained some experience they would be considered too.
So any topics?

well i just saw this game in another forum i am a member i decided to give you the idea and you decided if we are going to play it.So i change the rules a bit its pretty much the same.
So i start with a word for example "staff" and someone write another word from the Tolkien world that he thinks is connected with the word i wrote.
for example the other one write "Gandalf"
Any opinions

11-22-2003, 12:18 PM
Hmm I think that this "game" is too simple.I mean Tolkien's vocabulary is really enormous and it is easy to find a respond to the first given word.
I think we have something similar in TTF,though it is more complicated and it is called "Quotable Quotes".
If there are members who like your idea, please feel welcome to start it :)

It might be a good game for younger forum members, and to improve English vocabulary for those EFLs who feel their English lets them down on longer posts.
Finduilas
11-22-2003, 01:32 PM
The idea is good.:)
What's more, it will give us the chance to dive deeper in the vocabulary world of Tolkien! :)
But I think we should make it a bit more complicated...;) muhaha:D
Here is what I offer:
1. We provide a quote and say which is the word we would like to discuss.
2. Someone says which word he associates it to and posts a quote where we can see the relevance.
3. Others post thier suggestions too and we decide whether they are relevant too.:)
4. One word is discussed for let's say a couple of days...3-4? What do you say?
5. Additional task would be if one can provide the history of the word...Lant?;)
Well, this is what I offer, what do you say?
If you agree, drjekil can start it.

Why are you so 'grumpy', Kingy?
If it's "too simple" it will become boring fast, but... it can be a fine doze of 'fun' just for a little while... there's nothing really happening in the Guild nowadays... let's play...

I think that there are some activities in these Caves, that need to be brought back to life.
At the moment, as I see it, the Caves are the most 'heavily' populated area within the Halls of Tolkienology, yet only a couple of activities are actually active.
And I am looking at the list of all the others and I'm thinking of how wonderful these are! They just need some attention.
Glittering Lord .... or ... is it the Lord that Glitters ...... or the Lord Angel of the Caves .... :p , anyway, now that you have your 'deputies', why don't you 'send them on a possible mission? Let them stir this place! :)

you were thinking of: WIG, essays, filling in the gaps, artwork on the gallery of characters, letters, etc.? you mean i should set peoples' minds on writing poetry (or rhymes), delving deeper with the essays or using correct colours when creating new images of well known heroes? well, i'd love to, but this ring i got from your master (tricky Eye) seems not working... could you... i would very much like to... maybe yours would be fine? could you... lend me it for awhile? j-j-just to-o hold on for a sec... *clear angelic laugh*

Has anyone made any attempt on trying to continue Tolkien's storyline into the Fourth Age? Like the restoration of Minas Ithil as a habitable city, and Osgiliath as the capital of Gondor? Or perhaps various wars between Gondor and the Easterlings? Or maybe the story of how exactly Durin's Folk came to reclaim Moria? There are a wealth of possibilities here, and I am surprised not more people have acted upon them.

from Sauron
"Has anyone made any attempt on trying to continue Tolkien's storyline into the Fourth Age?"
Even the end of the Fourth Age. I think attempting (in a very conscientous, comprehensive way) the “Dagor Dagorath” would be great fun, if careful thought and attention went into it. Maybe we can begin where Melko begins subtly manipulating Arien and Tilion toward "their quarrel" - which eventually leads to their doom; thus Melko is able to overcome the “Door of Night”:
"For 'tis said ere the Great end come Melko shall in some wise contrive a quarrel between Moon and Sun, and Ilsinor [Tilion] shall seek to follow Urwendi [Arien] through the Gates, and when they are gone the Gates of both East and West will be destroyed, and Urwendi and Ilsinor shall be lost." Book of Lost Tales 1 .......Of course in this earlier writing; Fionwë (aka Eonwë - a Vala) who loved Urwendi destroys Morgoth; not Turin Turambar.
At any rate, maybe coming up with the details for “[I]Melko shall in some wise contrive a quarrel” would be a good place to start :).
