What music do you guys like? I know there already is a thread on this in the stuff and bother, but it has become too big and too boring to read.

I like Rock and Roll from the late 60s and early 70s. My favourite bands are Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.

But right now I'm actually listening to some eletronic music.

What about you?

I like anything that's good. By good I mean, Heavy Metal, Power Metal or Classic Rock. Here's a few -

Iron Maiden
Iced Earth
Elvenking
Black Sabbath
Blind Guardian

Any other genre's, I hate, well, no. I can tolerate most other kinds of Metal, except Thrash and Nu. Any Pop, Dance, Rap etc, I despise, and will go to any lengths to avoid.

I like Andreas Vollenweider ! (Ducks flying potatoes).

EverEve

Never 'eard of 'em, Mindy. *Ducks the flying potato that Mindy chucks at her*

I go for the whole rock, rap, hip-hop scene:

Sum-41, Linkin Park, New Found Glory, Eminem (I LOVE HIM!...just to get that out in the open :)), Third Eye Blind, Our Lady Peace, Nas, Coolio, Nelly, Simple Plan (havent heard much from them though)...There are alot more, I just cant think of them...Oh yah, Add PINK to the list...I like 'er!

HobbitGirl
12-07-2002, 09:05 PM
I like lots of music...from Beethoven to bagpipes to Nutcracker to punk. I can tolerate some disco that is really fun to dance to, but I despise pop and rap. I don't like Eminem, and most metal turns me off, simply because the lyrics are angry and violent. I believe listening to music should be fun, not depressing!

Hey! New age isn't bad! GO ENYA!

Dragon
12-08-2002, 12:11 AM
I like enya too! I listen to mix stations (ya know, "80s 90s and today)
right now my favorites are Santana and

STING!!!!

I dig a lot of old stuff. Doobies, Kansas, the Guess Who, HENDRIX!America, Skynyrd. And then there's old country I was brought up on: Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves. I also really like Aerosmith. Gotta love the Beatles. (All you need is love, guys) Oh, and can't forget Chicago, Carole King, Weird Al Yankovic, and John Williams' awesome soundtrack music.

HobbitGirl

Weird Al! How could I have forgotten Werid Al! I have five of his albums!

"You gotta squeeze all the Charmin you can
When Mr. Whipple's not around."

Froggum

Best Weird Al song EVER:

"Polka Power" from Running with scissors.

Oh, and must mwntion my favorite Sesame Street tunes:

"MANAMANA!" "C is for Cookie" and "Fuzzy and Blue"

HobbitGirl
12-10-2002, 11:51 PM
I have to disagree with you, Froggum. The best Weird Al song ever is "Dare to be Stupid" off the album Dare to be Stupid.

"Stick your head in the microwave and get yourself a tan."

Froggum
12-10-2002, 11:51 PM
I'll have to download that.

Froggum

Mindy_O_Lluin
01-03-2003, 04:04 AM
Ah, well, I wasn't too worried, as I knew I would get the insurance money for it and buy a new car, but the cops found the guy still driving it two days later. They chased him down, ran over a bunch of medians, until he ran my car into someone's yard, jumped out, and the cops chased him thru some alley's until they finally caught him. I had to go into court to identify him. But at least the insurance co. gave me a rental car for the month while my car was in the shop getting fixed.

EverEve

Ok, I'm going to supply a list of bands that any self-respecting Metal fan should listen to.

Iron Maiden (THE Heavy Metal band)
Iced Earth (Heavy/Power Metal)
Elvenking (Folk Metal)
Primordial (Celtic Black Metal)
Powerquest (UK Power Metal)
DragonForce (UK Melodic Power Metal)
Nightwish (Heavy Metal)
Waylander (Um, a mix of Heavy, Black, Death & Power)
Blind Guardian (Power Metal)
Tristania (Goth Metal)
Cruachan (Celtic Folk Metal)

And I could go on, but that's a fairly good list.

Dragon
01-25-2003, 05:43 AM
maybe it's me, but suddenly, I'm seeing lot's of UKs powers and metals... am I going insane?

Wolfshead
01-25-2003, 11:12 AM
Well, the Metal scene is emerging as more popular now, largely thanks to Nu-Metal (which I despise), but hey, if it makes people listen to good music after it, I'm all for it!

If you lot like, I can give you some links where you can download some cool tracks, not using Kazaa. Just lemme know.

Pantera, (older) Metallica, and Sepultura, to name a few metal bands.
Snoop, Dre, 50cent, 2pac, Method/Redman are cool rap.
Kinks, Dayglo Abortions, Sex Pistols, D.R.I., S.O.D. good punkrock.

I'm not a big fan of metal, simply because the lyrics of all of the metal songs I've heard are too angry for me. I know that's a tad bit closed minded of me to say that, as I haven't listened to a very big variety of metal, but I think I'll just stick with my other music for now.

Dragon

My favorite band is They Might Be Giants, i've only heard one station that actually plays any of their songs. I also like stuff such as Peter Gabriel and Talking Heads. Then there's dance/techno and new age. And of course songs here and there from other genera.

Go They Might Be Giants!

Alright!!! I find very few people outside my "group" of friends have even heard of They Might be Giants, let alone like them!! When I was visiting my dad this summer (he lives in Florida), I brought a bunch of my TMBG CDs, and he LOVED them!! He even ended up burning all the albums that I had brought with me. I thought that was pretty neat.

Dragon

I'm not big on knowing who the artist is, just the songs....what songs do they sing?

HobbitGirl
02-13-2003, 12:55 AM
Heh heh heh....well, way I heard that song was indirectly through my brother, acutally. Some guy had made music video of that song using various scenes from Dragonball Z, and my brother downloaded it, and I happened to walk into his room when he was playing it. I asked him to play it again, and since then I have LOVED that song. So funny. :D

(Heh, Dragon, you like DBZ, can you guess who was Particle Man, Triangle Man, Person Man, and Universe Man? :D)

kohaku
02-13-2003, 03:49 AM
some of the TMBG songs i've heard on the radio that people might know are: Particle Man, Birdhouse in Your Soul.... um... The Guitar (played to the tune Lion Sleeps Tonight)... hmmm what else... they also do Not the Boss of Me, the theme song for the show Malcolm in the Middle (great show BTW).

oh yes, and Dr. Worm, they used to play that a lot where I live.... some five to seven years ago

Dragon
02-13-2003, 04:19 AM
Hg; weren't they in the world games or something? I don't have cable, so I don't get to watch it as much as I would like

HobbitGirl
02-13-2003, 04:27 AM
Eh...Dragon, I think you misunderstood me a little bit. Some guy made this music video using clips from various episodes of DBZ. Every time TMBG sang about a certain superhero, e.g. Particle Man, you would see a certain DBZ character doing something. And the something they were doing sometimes even relfected something that TMBG were singing about. In short, four DBZ characters were "cast" as Particle Man, Universe Man, Triangle Man, and Person Man.

Eh...does that make sense?

Dragon
02-13-2003, 04:31 AM
ummmm yeah, it does, but I would have to think about it.....ummm is universe man king ki? probably not but....

HobbitGirl
02-13-2003, 04:44 AM
Nah, I'll save you the trouble.

Particle Man=Goku
Triangle Man=Cell
Universe Man=Hercule
Person Man=Krillin

He heh he...when TMBG sing "Person man, person man. Hit on the head with a frying pan" it shows Krillin getting baped over the head by Piccolo. :)

Yeah, I don't like much "mainstream" metal nowadays. Although there are some bands. What about Pantera?
Alot of Metal bands from Sweden are coming out now that hit hard. In Flames is a good one.
Whats your fav. Maiden album? Mine is prob. Piece of Mind or Live After Death.... (any older stuff really)
And like Lenny Kravitz said, "Rock and Roll is DEAD."
Commercial-loving kids will not convert..........
They just don't hear what we hear.

Talk to me about metal from before 1990's, when Nirvana and Grunge music came onto the scene. When songs actually had guitar solos in them!
S.O.D.? D.R.I.? Dayglo? That's some old-school, underground stuff. (punk) Meatmen? Cannibal Corpse? Death? Sacred Reich?
Suicidal T's? Megadeath? The Accused? Misfits? Sepultura? Strapping Young Lads? Butthole Surfers? Agnostic Front? Black Flag? Motorhead? Maiden? I know I'm missing so many.....
There's were so many metal/punk bands! What happened????
They all sound the same now! (bands nowadays!)

I've only got, um, *Counts on fingers* 5 Maiden albums. Being

Iron Maiden
Fear Of The Dark
Best Of The Beast
Brave New World
Edward The Great

The reason for this being I can't afford everything I'd like. But I'm one track away from finishing the download of Killers. Not strictly legal, but I wouldn't be able to buy it anyway... My favourite is probably Brave New World along with Iron Maiden. The great guitar work on BNW and the rawness of Iron Maiden make them both great, in my opinion.

Kids can be made to like Metal. Until a year and a half or so ago, I was one of them. I listened to Nu-metal - Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit etc - and Classic Rock - Bon Jovi, Aerosmith. Then one day I searched for 'Lord Of The Rings' on Kazaa, found that song by Blind Guardian, and it just developed from there. Now Metal is more important to me than football!

Damn, I recognise very few of those bands you mentioned! I mostly listen to newer Metal, along with Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath. Although I'm in the process of getting some Saxon and Def Leppard stuff.

S.O.D., D.R.I, Dayglo, Meatmen, Cannibal Corpse, Death, Sacred Reich, Suicidal T's, The Accused, Misfits, Butthole Surfers, Agnostic Front, Black Flag - Never heard of them... Sorry...

Megadeath - I was going to buy an album of theirs one day but decided on something else instead. They're American, I just seem to avoid American metal for some reason. Except Iced Earth, of course.

Sepultura - One of my mates listens to them, but I've never got round to it. He's only got them on vinyl, and I can't be bothered with that.

Strapping Young Lads - There's a band around now called Strapping Young Lad. Maybe the same? I downloaded one of their tracks from the Century Media site. It was Death Metal, and too extreme for my tastes.

Motorhead - Downloaded one of their tracks once. I think it was Brave New World. For ages I believed it to be Brave New World by Iron Maiden.

Dream Theater - Heard of them. I think they had some ties with Maiden way back. Haven't heard them though.

Ok, so here's some of the bands I listen to. A long list

Iron Maiden
Iced Earth
Black Sabbath
Blind Guardian
Elvenking
Primordial
Nightwish
Cruachan
Anathema

And I could list loads more, but they are the best. Anyway, that's me finished for now, my sister wants on and I need to set some more Maiden tracks downloading...

Never heard of Nightwish, Elvenking, Cruachan. Have to look for them in Kazza (oops!) I mean somewhere.
The Brave new World album is cool, but I like older Maiden better. I do like that song Nomad, it reminds me of Maiden's earlier work.
Most of the bands I listed are hard-core punk, or hard-core metal, all from before the 1990's. Dayglo Abortions is funny, hand-hitting punk. Same for S.O.D. (stormtroopers of death.)
Dude, you HAVE to check out Dream Theater. Any metal or hard rock loving person should like them alot. Look for "Six degrees of Inner Turbulence", a song called "Fatal Tragedy" pretty much sums up what they are about! You'll love it!

Anyways, go hard metal!! Kick nu-metal and pop in the ***** or the *****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who likes Rap? Any Snoop dog fans or Method Man/Redman or Dr. Dre fans in here?

Nightwish (http://www.nightwish.com) - A Finnish heavy metal band. Female vocalist, more relaxing than Maiden and the like. I'm sure Ol'gaffer will happily tell you all about them! You can get some of their stuff, including 3 full songs of their site, linked above, or use Kazaa. For Kazaa I would recommend The Riddler and Elvenpath.

Elvenking (http://www.elvenking.net) - Officially described as Italian Medieval Folk Metal. I wonder how many other bands there are in that genre? They've a good mix of folk, heavy, power and death metal with some female vocals. One album released so far, Heathenreel but the second should be out later this year. Their site has 3 songs to download, but with Kazaa get White Willow and Seasonspeech. Often compared to Skyclad.

Cruachan (http://www.cruachan.cjb.net) - Celtic Folk Metal. I've got one of their albums, Folk-Lore. It's good, but maybe focuses on the folk element more than it should for your liking, greypilgrim. They've got a female vocalist who seems to know Pierce Brosnan, he's thanked in the credits. That album also features Shane MacGowan in a few of the tracks, the frontman of The Pogues. There're a few samples on their site, but you need to download Ride On, it's a magnificent track.

I remembered where I heard Dream Theater. Iron Maiden FC Magazine 66 or 67 had an article about them. In October-ish for a few gigs in London and Paris they completely covered the Maiden album The Number Of The Beast, all the tracks from it! I shall maybe check them out, can you recommend any tracks by them?

I used to like rap before I became enlightened. Although Eminem's song, Lose Yourself from 8 Mile is good.

I will check out the bands you mentioned! Folk-metal, hmmmm...

Just look for anything by Dream Theater, most of it I think you will like, it floats between fast, mellow, heavy, mellow, crazy, fast, and mellow sounds, on every song! :) They are very unique.
Definately get "Six degrees of Inner Turbulence"!
Eminem is alright, but I'm sick of him already, kindof. I like old-school rap, not too old, like Run DMC, but old-school, like the ghetto boys, NWA. and mostly gangsta ****.
I finally tracked down the Dayglo Abortions album, Feed us a Fetus. Kazaa only has a few of the songs off that album, and another album is Two Dogs F*****g, both of them older stuff from them. Their newer stuff is weak. I should have that CD in a week, I'm soooo happy!
In like Iced Earth's album art! You don't see that anymore!
Do you listen to King Diamond?
Damn, Craig, Craig is my name too! haha!

Craigsmith: Personally I think that "Oceanborn" is their second worst album yet, their worst being "Angels fall first". You should, if you allready haven't, download these songs form kazaa:

Bless the child
Wishmaster
Dead to the world
Beauty of the beast live version

and nearly all the songs from their newest album "Century Child" Nightwish are currently holding a break from music and touring so if you have a chance to see them this summer GO! Even if your friend doesn't come it'll be worth it, because there is the chance that you might not be able to see them live for a longe time after this tour!

The lead singer is currently studying opera in Germany right now. Just popped into my head and I thought that I'll just put it here.

I'm surprised that someone not european, (if you're from Europe then my bad) has actually listened to Nightwish and liked it! That's a great thing and I urge that everybody who has the least bit of interest to heavy metal to go and either download or buy these albums from them:

Century Child
Wishmaster
Over the Hills and Far Away

These are by far their best albums. And craigsmith is right. If anyone has anything to ask about them I'll be happy to tell.

Damn, Craig, Craig is my name too! haha! Yeah, the Iced Earth art is great, especially on Something Wicked This Way Comes, the Egyptian stuff inside that is really cool.

The name King Diamond rings a bell, but never heard of them. Recommended tracks?

Yes, Craig is a good name. Ah, but what makes you think it's my real name? ;)
Nóm: I am surprised to see that someone here listens to Anathema, only because I don't know anyone who does... I love that band! I've only got Judgement, a copy from a friend who's a big fan of doom metal. It is a very good album, but I don't often listen to it, I find a lot of that stuff too depressing for my usual tastes. But they are good, and the lyrics are smashing, for lack of a better word :)

Ol'gaffer: Personally I think that "Oceanborn" is their second worst album yet Really? I was told on the Blind Guardian forum by loads of people that I should buy that album. I asked which to get, and I was inundated with people saying "Oceanborn!". But if it's not that good, can't wait for the rest...

I'm going to try and sort out what I'm going to do about Bloodstock tomorrow. I don't know if I'll be going.

Note "Location: Scotland" :p So I can say I'm European, just. I can't say I specifically know any Americans who like Nightwish but some of the Nightwish fans on www.blind-guardian.com/forum/index.php must be American. I'll get those albums eventually, but there's so much to buy! Skyclad and Saxon next, plus an Iced Earth t-shirt, and an acoustic guitar as well. So not in the next couple of months :(

What about PunkRock? SexPistols-Ramones, for the English.~The Accused or Misfits or Method of Destruction, or C.O.C. for Americans?

What about crazy music like 311, Red Hot Chili Peppers, or Sublime for anyone who listened to music since 1990?

And does anyone like Classical music???

Craig: King Diamond was the lead singer for a band called Mercyful Fate. He quit the band and formed another band called KING DIAMOND! How stupid! Simple Minds....YES!
Stone Roses....never heard of.
TISM..what's it stand for?
Billy Bragg...never heard of him. Or is it them?
What was Austrailia's music like in the 80's? Name something.

OK- I want to start an 80's music revolution. Is it agreeable that some of the best music with any kind of beat to it CAME FROM the 80's music-type genre?
I'm thinking of that song from Ferris Beuller's Day Off.....

"Ohhhh......yeah. Beautiful. Ohhhhh....yeah!..... More beautiful!.....chi-chi-chi-ka! I don't know the name or the band.
All I have to say about the revolution is..It may be going on world wide soon, because I started it here, remember this...

The funniest, most extreme, fun to listen to-nod your head to-if you're-wierd-and-old, music with a beat, recorded after the 1970's, came from out of the 1980's....Whos with me in the revolution or whatever! It's got to be remembered at least!

The song from Ferris Beuller is "Oh Yeah", the band is called Yello.
Billy Bragg is a singer/songwriter from England with a great big chip on his left-wing shoulder.

GOOD BANDS SADOR! Shriekback? Kissing the Pink? I like the sound of those bands...I'll have to check them out!

Dudes, I am looking at 4 CD's, filled with my favorite 80's music. I just copied them this weekend. Over 5 whole hours of my own "Ultimate 80's" mix!
My fav. bands (that I could think of so far) are in that collection.

I've started to sing the songs in a Kareoke bar!

The Limlit Lounge in the Guild of Periaur! My insane revolution started there last Sunday night. It's going on there...and here too!

I'm singing DEVO there this week, they are from CLEVELAND!
So am I.:) :) Cleveland birthed many famous bands! I think Paul MC. moved here and formed the band WINGS!

I know somebody has heard Devo's rubbish...
"I'm on a Mexican~whoa oh~radio!".........."Crack that whip!"..... and so on and so on...they were more punk-ish than the Talking Heads.

Sador

Mexican Radio was by Wall of Voodoo.
Shriekback's best dance single was called" My spine is the bassline" (just my opinion)
I have Devo's first three albums and I always thought they were from Akron, like the B52's.
Kissing the pink were a UK band who had to call themselves KTP in the states because everyone thought their full name sounded too rude! It is really just a snooker term(which completely by accident sounds a bit smutty). Sounds reasonable to me.

Cleveland-Akron is close connection. Never heard Wall of Voodo. Just Devo's version only. Alot of cool bands came out the Cleveland area...
Bone, Marilyn Manson (that dude), Trent Reznor/NineInchNails, Minddscape, Filter, Linus, LilBowWow is from Canton.

The music won't change, only the size of the audience.
This happens all the time. Remember when Nirvana were sooo raucous and punk? Listen to "Smells like teen spirit" now and what you hear is a melodic pop song. Same with the Sex Pistols and other artists all the way back to Elvis and probably beyond.

However, it would be more difficult to commericialise good metal because the bands aren't (usually) in it for the money, so while they have lots of success (Iron Maiden, for example) the music will still stay quality.

I've heard that Iced Earth are beginning to become mainstream in America due to being so popular. In itself this is not necessarily a bad thing. So long as they don't sell out, more popularity for metal can only be a good thing :)

Loreena McKinnet (Celtic revivalist)

Evanescence kind of depends on your taste. Musically, I think they're beautiful. The lyrics are very dark and introspective and have been slammed by some people as depressing and unhealthy, but personally, I like them a lot. They're well thought out and honest. It all comes down to your taste in music.

I like most of the bands mentioned up there, but I'm too lazy to go through and pick them all out, so I'll just smile and nod. :)

Prolly did, now that I think about it they're very similar... one's just a little more "piratey"

That's one thing that bothers me about soundtracks, there's never much originality in them. Sure, Star Wars anybody recognizes right off, but stuff like Gladiator?

Yaygollum with moderator powers? That's one scary thought...
I used to like Enya untill those Academy Awards where she performed the song from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack (can't remember the title), and she actually did not sound that great as she usually does on her CDs. I guess I got a bit disappointed.

Even John Williams puts a little Star Wars and E.T. and Indiana Jones in Harry Potter... Doesn't stop me listening to his music, though... :)

Heheh, yeah, just saying that there's not too many original sounding soundtracks anymore.

And as for Enya, I think she sounded like **** too, but a lot of that prolly was that when she does her music, she layers around 40 background vocals of herself singing to get that "airy" feel to it.... so with just one vocal, it isn't going to sound as good... I saw her on larry king live once, and she had backup singers with her, and it sounded so much better then at the oscars.

They raised the price on CDs in Walmart! The world is coming to an end. They used to cost around $11.88 or 13.88 for new releases, but now it's 14.88. *angry muttering*
