This authorized thread is regarding the Elvish language(s). For instance, have you made an Elvish name for yourself? Do you study Elvish? Do you have questions about Elvish? By Elvish I do, of course, mean Quenya, Sindarin, Nandorin, Avarin, and all the other dialects (though I only know things of Quenya and Sindarin). What have your adventures with the Elvish language(s) been like?
I myself made up a name... Narodur, meaning "Fire/Flame in/of (the) Darkness/Night." I translate it thus differently depending on my mood. I am very intelligent, and thus I am "bright," (so, Flame in/of the Night and I help others around me who are "dark," or "dim." I am also very prone to anger, (so Fire of Darkness), and can become very "enflamed" in a split second. Thus, my name follows closely to the my unique self. It is Sindarin, though in proper form it should be "Naurodur." I like to keep it Naro though, because that word relates to talking and story-telling, and I am a very talkative person. Thus, I make it fit my personality even better by leaving it Narodur (in my opinion).
So, what about you? Have you done anything similar, or related to the Elvish Language(s)? I may be talkative, but I also like to listenl; so, share your experiences for all of us here in the Guild of Elves!

Great! Have you done anything else? If not, no matter... More will post (I hope) soon.

I've made up a few Elvish names. Two are people, one is a horse. :D
1) Bethelarien. Beth=word (As in, "In the beginning was the Word), el=star, arien=sun-maiden. 'Arien' came from (in my name) Arawen. ara=noble, wen=maiden.
Therefore, Bethelarien=Word-star-noble-maiden. :D
2) Durwen. She's my assassin. Dur=dark, wen=maiden, so literally Dark-maiden. Also, her alias, Dingurthwen, which means Silent-death-maiden. Heh heh.
3) Alquarokke. This is Isal's horse in my story. He's white. Alqua=swan. Rokke comes from rokko, which means horse. This is Quenya. The other two are Sindarin.
~Estel, you never asked for permission, which is why your thread was locked.

Great stuff! I myself have never been very comfortable in writing and making, names, or anything like that, because I'm afraid I'll do it wrong. UsuallyI'm correct in assuming that I would be wrong, but Narodur is so short and easy, you can't really make that many mistakes. Has anyone felt the same way?

i sometimes feel that way but, if its wrong its wrong, ill do it over.
im in the process of writing a song in elvish, its about this girl that ive liked for a long time, which i have named Venyaelen-beautiful star, the only verse ive come up with so far is: Roilya melas Venyaelen. i want it to go on for a couple more verses. when im done ill post it for you.

Cool, and thanks. :)
I have myslelf thought of a name for a girl that I like: Miradul, meaning "Jewel of the Night." Her actual name is Leila. which translates "night," but since 'Dul(a)' didn't sound right, I picked more for it. Since (I think) she is extremely beautiful and is precious to me, I added 'Mir,' which means "precious thing, jewel." Also, as you might notice, Miradul is similar to Narodur, in that they sound a little alike and they both contain 'du,' meaning 'night, darkness.' So, even though my name is Brian (Celtic for "strong") and has nothing to do with night, I wanted the names to be connected, to be almost as one. I did, in fact, only look deeper into Narodur recently, when I had a paper for English class (two weels ago) where we had to analyze our names, what they mean, what they mean to you, and what you think of yourself 'inside'. I then realized that Narodur fitted me better than I could have ever imagined, and I only realized that Nar being related to talking/story-telling made it fit me even better when I was posting about it in my first post. It's funny the way that works. I have, in fact, also composed something in Elvish about her (though not song, just poem). This is it:
~~~Á Míradúl~~~
Á Míradúl, írmân, melmé
Nâlyé ârn féan thând
Á Míradúl, mírén, lísmé
Cúillé úlyé cúillé nând.
It means (at least I hope it means):
~~~O Leila~~~
O Leila, darling, one true love
You’re what my soul is a part of
O Leila, sweet, precious jewel
Life without you wouldn’t be life.
Well, that's about it for now. I have more stuff on names, but I don't know where it is at the moment. I'll post when I find it.

o wow thats real cool.
Has anyone here studied the Quenya course off of www.ardalambion.com? I got into it a little bit, but not nearly enough to learn more than a few words. For example, I know that rocco means horse, and that aran means king. Mine lie nu mine aran - One people under one king. That's about it.:D

Well, I've just found my original work on Narodur, and it turns out that it is wrong. Apparently, I had shortened it to Narodur from Naromídur, although I don't remember how exactly I got Naromídur in the first place. *Looks up Mí in elvish dictionary* Apparently, the component mí is Quenya for "In the," so that is actually correct, and apparently Naro is also Quenya now that I think about it, and now that I recall, that's why I have it stand for story-telling and such as well as fire, because in Quenya it's fire, but in Sindarin it's talking. The last part, dur, is apparently the only true Sindarin component in Narodur / Naromídur.
Anyway, I have, as I have said, found my original work on Narodur, and that includes the other names I made up. First, there was Endanormë Fëanólë. The first part includes the components enda "heart," nor "fire," and ormë "wrath." The latter part was composed of the elements fëa "soul" and nólë "wisdom." Thus, it was made to mean, "Heart of fire and wrath" and "Soul of Wisdom." After that I came up with Narodur, as I have explained, which was then followed by Silmidur "Light in the Darkness," Samaviltë "Mindless," Uryormë "Burning Wrath," Neuron "Follower," and Fëanaroc "Soul of Flame." All of these last ones were Quenya, as that's the language I started with of Elvish. I do not, however, know any more than what the Quenya dictionary that I have tells me, though it is quite extensive and detailed, which has helped me greatly in my endevours. And I am also pressed for time, as I must juggle my life and homework around constantly, and as my time on TTF is when I have nothing else to do (that is important), I have no time to be on TTF and learning Quenya while at the same time be trying to get my homework done and do other things.

How do you put the dots above the letter?
Khôr’nagan
11-02-2003, 12:36 AM
Well, that depends... Do you have a Macintosh or a PC? It's really easy for Mac's, but it's a lottle more complicated for PC's. If I want to write ë, then I press down on OPTION and type lowercase U, and then I just type the letter (a, e, i, o, u, y) and get that letter accented (ä, ë, ï, ö, ü, ÿ) in the text box that I'm typing in right now. For a dash over the letter I type lowercase E instead of U (á, é, í, ó, ú), for an upside-down v shape I type lowercase I (â, ê, î, ô, û), and for the curvy line I type lowecase N (ã, ñ, õ). However, as I have a Mac, this won't work on PC's, because they use different combo's. To see the PC operations, go to this thread:
:D Instructions: How to type Nóm (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11029). It should tell you all you need to know.

Indeed, very much fun. One reason why I do anything with Elvish in the first place is because it's fun. Same way with Latin, and basically any other language at all. Though I find I like it most when others around me can't do it, or at least not as well. Of course that's not the case on a forum devoted to the person who wrote the language, and I would be happy if I'm better at Elvish than even half the 1,670 and some-odd members of TTF. Still, not being as good doesn't take the fun out of it. But anyways, these are some of my more recent exploits:
Quenya:
Maecárn!.....Well done!
Maer!..........Good!
Sindarin:
Túrnávín!.................Victory is ours!
Túrnánín!................Victory is mine!
Túrnálín!..................Victory is yours!
Ná túro nín!.............Victory is mine!
Túriel nín!................Victory shall be mine!
Túriel mín!...............Victory shall be ours!
Ná túro mín!............Victory is ours!
Bragol firo!...............Sudden death!
Dagro mín!...............We make war!
Firitha lín!.................You will die!
Lé rúdh!...................You are bald!
Elo! An firo!..............Behold! For ruin!
Elo! Nín amarth!.......Behold! My doom!
Rocho hi! Rocho an fir, a methiel amar!.......Ride now! Ride for ruin, and the World’s ending!
Mavori níranne, an lé, herun, an lé. ..........And shepherds we shall be, for thee, my lord, for thee.
*From the film Boondock Saints
Avom thiro ledh ni mordú!...........................We will not vanish into the black night!
Avom firo údagor!........................................We will not perish without a fight!
Okay, so that's what I've come up with so far... Any comments/mistakes?

So, a thread to teach Quenya, eh? Sure, I guess. I haven't actually tried to learn it before myself, though I'll check up on a few facts and start it I guess. Be back in a bit...

What format would this teaching thread take? Would it be a set of lessons with exercises or would it be more of a question and answer type of thing?

Well, perhaps we could use the exercizes of the quenya course, that is downloadable at www.ardalambion.com ??
