This is the original idea of our fairest Finduilas.

The thread will be NOT about Tolkien's letters but about our own work. There will be a topic set (for example, The War in The Third Age when Sauron tries to get every single people in the ME on his side) and we will write letters on that topic. To clear this up, here: If we take the topic with Sauron, then one will start the letter-writing with a letter by Sauron to, let's say, Sauron calling him to order but with nice diplomatic words. In other words, one will write a diplomatic letter by Sauron to A Lord of Any Realm in ME. Then a second person will answer his letter with the decision he has taken...and so on and so on. Thus a whole war will be made but mostly a diplomatic one.

For all those of you, who would like to participate, here is the first topic:

Elrond - writing letters to Arwen and Aragorn

Enjoy! :D

My Dearest Daughter,

This letter is sent with my friend G.I. who has business in the land where you rest (in the form of a great desire to attend a feast long planned, it seems). I have spoken of late with one who rested here after a foray in the realm of the horsemen. Fear not, he is unhurt and even now returns to his relentless guard over Eriador and the land of the halflings. I have not been blind, my daughter, to what has grown up over you both. I see your happiness and I see your sadness, for if this relationship is to come to fulness, then you must make a choice, whether to follow your heart to a short happiness, or the way of your people to a life that endures to the end of the world. He too is torn in his heart; and we have spoken at length of what may be. Yet even as I have laid out the choices you must make, they may yet be taken from us all, for the dark shadow rises again in Middle Earth. Many are taking ship to Valinor, but the Lady of the wood must stay and so must I, for our work is yet unfinished, and all may yet end in bloodshed and tears. Your choice lies before you, daughter, and I will not take it from you; but to your beloved I have made one thing known. I will not give my daughter to marry any mortal less than a King. I love him as my son, and he has grown into a man of great strength and wisdom. Yet man he is, and he must take his rightful place if he is to fulfil his desire to take you to wife, for I will give up my daughter for no lesser mortal than a great king.

You know that this is not a refusal. I see the fire of desire has already awakened in him for what is rightly his, and I foresee that the time is near for him to strike out towards the south. But in wrath or in peace, that I do not know.

Be at peace, my daughter. To the King I will give my blessing; and you have faith in his return I know, for I have seen the work of your hands that is yet unfinished. Silver on a black field belongs to one man only. He will need your quiet strength when the time comes. Though I do not know the hour or the manner of its coming, it will be soon.

Your brothers send their love; they will ride out with Gildor but will not come to the Lady for their path lies elsewhere. Too much I will not say, for the safety of this letter is not guaranteed. The darkness ever searches out the servants of the light. My love, as ever, is with you.

Your father

Wow! What a great letter you wrote. Too bad Peter Jackson didn't consult with you about Elrond's, Arwen's, and Aragorn's relationship when he was making the movie. I hate that he introduced a conflict that isn't there.

Eledhwen,I like it very much, but don't you think Elrond is too liberal,I mean,he didn't like much the fact Arwen wanted to stay in Middle-earth and marry Aragorn.;)

No, I don't think he did either, but he is wise. He saw the love between them and had time to consider a measured response. Coming down heavy on the emotional blackmail, as in the film, is not what I think would have happened. Elrond instead made it clear that his daughter's hand would be given to none less than a great king.

Elven lore is stronger than the history of man, and things remembered are as fresh as the present, so Elrond will have been mindful of the choice of Luthien and of Thingol's attempts to thwart her. It isn't as if Arwen was in any way immature; "Young she was and yet not so.... The light of stars was in her bright eyes, grey as a cloudless night; yet queenly she looked, and thought and knowledge were in her glance, as of one who has known many things that the years bring."

Secondly, I want to thank Eledhwen for making it alive! A great letter indeed! Master work.

I don't want to see this thread buried.

If anyone has a letter for another context, why not post it? Letters cross in the post all the time.

My Beloved Father,

Your letter fired in me a great happiness and yet an endless grief. For I wish not to make you, my Dearest Creator, experience the hardship of my choice.
You say I deserve a King; you say you want no less than a King for me; then let me free, Father! My beloved is a King! he is the King of my Heart! And yet he is the King-to-come of these lands. Remember my words, most-dearest-to-the-soul! Remember my hope and my certainty! But most of all, remember my love, Father! For Love will save us! I dare let not mine down and I dare believe in it!
And if you say I have to serve my people, for I am the Lady of the Wood, then tell me, dear Father, how wilt I help them from the far land of Valinor? What wilt bring my hopes and worse-my fears? They wilt be useless, they wilt be saddening...
Believe in my beloved, Father, as you believe in me! For we are a whole! And he wilt be a King, this I promise you, this the for-coming days promise you! This Fate promises you!

Forgive my weakness in the presence of love! Give me your blessing, Father, for even 'fooled' by emotions I have respect; respect and maturity. I wilt not marry given not your approval. But expect me not to stop loving my dearest!
I have made my choice, Father. I choose Love...

Your daughter.

Another topic?

I would like to suggest ELROND again, but this time he is writing letters to those who need to know the implications of OHTAR arriving at Rivendell with the shards of Narsil. I would leave it up to 'Elrond' to decide who to write to.
