The following is from the Annals of Arda.
Aulë
Mahal. ( Dwarvish name of Aulë.)
Aulë is third in might right after Ulmo. He is the Lord of the ground, dust and rocks and all that which Arda is made of. Aulë is a smith and a master of crafts. In the beginning Manwë, Ulmo and Aulë worked closely together in the creation of Arda. Aulë finds joy in all kinds of craftsmanship, large and small, and to him belong the stones and the gold in the depths of the mountains and all of the minerals Human, Elves, Dwarves and Dragons value so high. Aulë, by the request of his wife Yavanna, made the two lamps, Illuin and Ormal, between the Valian Years 1500 to 1900, which Varda filled with light. When the Valar came to Aman it was Aulë who deemed Valinor a good place to build their blessed realm. And when the bright Trees of Yavanna, Laurelin and Silpion, had grown to full, Aulë had plenty of light for his works and therefore set about his many tasks. At his side were Yavanna and Tulkas, who were a great help to him. The first task was to build a beautiful abode and watchtower, the Halls of Manwë, for Manwë upon Taniquetil. The Court of Aulë was build outside Valmar and was filled with magic webs woven of the light of Laurelin and Telperion and with the glint of the stars. Aulë also made the Dwarves.
Valian Years ( V.Y.) 0 - 3450
V.Y 0 - 1500. Uncounted years filled with labouring had gone by in the timeless ages before the Gods descended into the world in the year 0. But Melkor contested the overlordship of Manwë and strife was in the world. Manwë summoned help, and among those who heard it, was Tulkas. He came to the aid of Manwë and Melkor, when he faced the wrath of Tulkas, fled beyond the circles of Arda into the void of Eä. In these years I believe Aulë created the Dwarves.
V.Y 1500 - 1900. Now the gods planned and schemed and ordered, and for all the seeds Yavanna had planted, Aulë made two great lamps Ormal and Illuin to light the earth. These were set in 1900 upon Helkar and Ringil and the world came to life. Trees and beasts swelled the earth and the Spring of Arda began.
V.Y. 1900 - 3450. The Gods settlet at Almaren, but Melkor, from the outside of the Wall of Things, saw and heard, from his spies that the Gods had settled at Almaren and he grew hot with envy. He heard this from his chief spy Sauron, who were among the Gods. Melkor called to him spirits and they crept over the Wall and entered Arda in the North. He assailed the Lamps and overthrew them, and the blossom of the earth was checked.

V.Y.t 0 - V.Y.t 1000. The Gods now departed to Aman where Aulë deemed the plains of Valinor a good place to build their new home. A great labour now began for the Gods and in this work Aulë played a great part.
Now began the Valian Years of the Trees. ( V.Y.t ) and a new reckoning of time
V.Y.t 0. The two trees, Silpion and Laurelin, came into being and in the delicious light upon Valinor Aulë began many new tasks.
V.Y.t 0 - 1000. This was the Noontide of Valinor though Middle-earth was still in darkness. Only Oromë and Yavanna came there at times, and the stewardship of Middle-earth was partly neglected. Melkor ruled Middle-Earth with violence, save during those times Oromë was hunting there.
V.Y.t.1000. At the prayer of Yavanna, Varda began the second setting of the stars and the Elves awoke. ( 1050 )
V.Y.t.1090 - 1092. The gods decided to capture Melkor and Aulë made the chain Angainor and the gods went to war.
V.Y.t. 1092 - 1100. Melkor was made captive and brought to Valinor where he was doomed to serve 3 ages in the fastness of Mandos.
V.Y.t. 1133. Arrival of the Vanyar and Noldor at Aman.
V.Y.t 1400. At this time Melkor sued for pardon and against the wish of Tulkas, Oromë and Aulë, Melkor was released.
V.Y.t 1133 - 1495. Aulë taught the Noldor Elves many secrets during these years and many things were revealed to them. Among other great things the Silmarils were created. At the end of these years the Kinslaying at Aqualondë, the destruction of the two Trees and the flight of the Noldor took place.
V.Y.t 1496 - 1500. These years between the killing of the Trees and the rise of the Sun and Moon were the Years of Darkness or the Years of the Darkening of Valinor. Long it has been said that the Valar sat in silent thoughts, holding counsel with each other through the power of their minds in the Ring of Doom.
V.Y.t 1497. In this year Finarfin and his host returned but Aulë, their ancient friend, smiled at them no more. Yavanna and Nienna put forth all their powers of healing and by the uttermost of their strength and power; Telperion and Laurelin bore each one a single fruit, which became the Sun and Moon.

Third Age.
Sometime between the end of the Second Age and the year 1000 In the Third Age of Middle-Earth, Manwë summoned the Valar for a council ( maybe through the advice of Eru ) to decide how to strengthen the contest against Sauron in Middle-Earth. The order of the Istari was created and the Maiar chosen. When this happened it is nowhere told, but the Istari or Wizards appeared in Middle-Earth around the T.A.1000 - 1100. Aulë chose Curumo among his Maiar.
From the above we see that Aule and Melkor are closely linked, more so than anyother valar with Melkor. Two of Aule's Maiar turned against him and sided with Melkor, Sauron and Saruman. Melkor also seemed to be jealous of Aule's craftsmenship. Aule creates to the two great lamps to light Arda. Melkor then destroys the two lamps. Melkor also continuously destroy's Aule's land that he is working on during the shaping of Arda.
