The last two months of 2003 were not pleasant for me, so I'm glad I had plenty of work on. The year went out well, though, as we went to Scotland to celebrate my surviving sister's 50th birthday and stayed for Hogmanay. It is with great sincerity that I wish all my Guild-friends a very, very happy 2004 - a year to be looked back on, at the other end, with satisfaction.

Back to the real "Happenings" in the Guild,

I've been away on a Christmas vacation in my beloved upper-Swabian home and on coming back I've noticed something missing: Where has the beautiful Hall of Arts gone to? I admit, I cannot have been a good member of that Hall when I don't even remember the correct name, but Findi, Eledhwen... you what I'm talking of: that wonderful place where we used to show off our poems, where Lhun delighted us with her graphic works, where we could read amazing short stories and chapters of bigger books, all created by us.
I miss it!

And last, but not least (;))
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SCATHA!!
And...

Both a little late, but... haven't been around much lately...

Yea, it's good to be back...

Well,finally I am back.
Exactly one month I was almost offline and I did nothing for the Guild.I would like to apologize for my lack of activity,as a Guild Master I am supposed to do my best for our favourite place and my friends.I had pretty good holiday but at the same time I had to solve some personal problems.
Now,my second semester is coming and I am back in Leuven,Belgium which means that I will take care of my fellows and the Guild.
Many new activities will be started,so be prepared ;) for surprises.

There will be something for everybody.
For example the debates will be first of all for fun but also they will have some educational purpose and serious comments will be made. Thus I hope we will manage to mix pleasure with education.

Thanks Manv ;)

Well I would like to annouce some things.

First of all I would like to re-start the old threads-What Thorondor Knows and the interviews in it.We have many new members and I believe that they too should be interviewed.I hope that Manveru and Finduilas can take care of it and continue the old tradition?

The other thing I want to annouce is that small "debate duels" should be started very soon. There will be small debates 1 vs 1 and everybody can invite anyone else and debate with him if he wants.
The debates will be for pleasure as well as with educational purpose, they will last 5 days since the first post.A topic will be announced and the one who post first his opening post will actually choose a side. The second debator will have to defend the other side.
Together with the debates with the other Guilds I believe that your hunger for debating will be satisfied. ;)
Volunteers who want to try first?

I know you both can do a wonderful job.I suppose you can start with the "old" members who have not been interviewed yet and then you can proceed with the newest members.

Something esle to add, volunteers for "the duels" can apply for particiaption in The Great Debate Matters thread.

01-18-2004, 09:33 AM
G-G, if "What Thorondor knows" is going to be the active thread (which is cool! :D), then let's archive the thread "Meet the Guild". I see these both as identical in character and purpose, but the new one (with the interviews etc.) is a lot more interesting. .... We can also ask each interviewed member to add a recent photo of him/herself and so the "profile" will be complete. ... I don't know.. Is this a good idea?... I am thinking now of those old members who were around and have now unfortunately gone.... But ...still the archived thread "Meet the Guild" will be there in the Library and those who wish can always visit it. Right?

Another thing now... Debates are all right in any form, but as I am not interested in debating, I'd like to see the study + research + discussion threads strongly revived too !!! In the Noldorin Forge Hall there is (I hope you all know! ;) ) a thread for new suggestions and for discussing the development of various projects. I am going... hmmm... "flying" :p up there and I'm going to await for people who would be willing to work on the already existing projects and suggest ideas about new projects as well. See you in the Noldorin Forge halls!

The glittering in the Glittering Caves has been dimmed I'm afraid, too.... Wouldn't it be wise to chose a volunteer who would be keeping an eye on the creative activities of the members of this Guild?

BTW... now... speaking about all this, I am thinking that we should have a Master of Hall for each one of the Halls in the Guild. A Master of the NoldorinForge hall, a Master of the Gl.C. Hall, a Master (Keeper) of the Library of the Istary Hall... Mahanaxar can be (and should be IMO!) run by the Guild Master.
What do you say?
I personally would like to take care of the Noldorin Forge. ;) :D

... And don't be scared of my new looks! ;) :D

Well, you are right about "Meet The Guild",there is no need of it at the moment, when we are thinking of restarting "What Thorondor Knows".

As far as I can remember, you haven't done Feanor yet?So you still have some work to do there ;).But yes we need some new things, the problem is that I cannot think of all of them, that is why we have suggestions thread.

Concerning The Glittering Caves I will open these days a new thread which will be very similar to The Grond Design's pit,but it will be more specialized.I believe that you will love it!!!!

The idea about the Masters is interesting. That is why I asked Findi and Eriol to be my Deputies.Findi takes care of some organizational things, while Eriol should take care for the more serious activities.I like the idea about Masters of The Noldorin Forge and The Glittering Caves.I definitely need some help.
Lhun,of you can take care of The Noldorin Forge!!!!I wonder who can take care of The Glittering Caves, having in mind that Findi is very talented and person I believe she can manage with it.I will take care of the Library, because I am there often, when I have to move an old thread there.

And something else ......;) I do not see volunteers for "the duels"

I was going to attempt to start up a Guild called 'The Guild of Thëaretics', however, seeing as I am going I will be unable to accomplish it. However, it could become a sub-section of the guild. It is fundamentally in its own title, the theoretics of Ëa, every theory on the world of Tolkien from what Tom Bombadil really is (using textual proof) to who the Witch-King is. There could also be a section in Thëaretics for theoretical stories such as sequels, prequels and juxtaposed texts to Tolkien (I have written a few myself such as the 'Tale of the Ithryn Luin'). I also plan in the future to somehow bring the language of Westron and slowly develop it into English to make it the 'perfect mythology'. Just a suggestion, pity I won't be here to see it through. ;)

Yes, I risk the danger of seeming a bit dumb, but I have to ask this again:
Where has the Creative Endeavour's Hall gone to?

I cannot find it in the Glittering Caves, where, according to the link provided to me the last time I asked this, it should be. But when I enter the Caves now, I can't find it.

In an attempt of reviving it, clean it of Shelob's webs, I have thought of an idea to give it back some life. Dust it, polish it, decorate it, so it may shine again and be lighted by poetry and prose.

Lhunithiliel

Hei, Hirila, I am glad to meet you again! :D

Especially when polishing is needed...;)

--------
BTW: Hirila, I guess it was me who provided that link last time (glad it worked:)). The "problem" with the Endeavour's Hall is this it's been a long time since its last post... so, you cannot find it (though it still exists, as said the wraith) 'cause your browser shows the threads from the last 30 days (I guess, don't know for sure;)). Go to the "Display options - showing threads" near the bottom of the page and change to, for example, show all the threads in this section "from the beginning"... it should help:)

(Hmm... I just go and "write" sth to revive this thread and make it "pop-in" out of the shadows...)

Okay, you wanted to hear this, so here they are: some of my thoughts about how we can make the Halls shiny again:

- Haiku-Contest
- Theme-Poetry
- Theme-Stories

What I have in mind is posting poetry or prose on a specific (absolutely weird!) topic.
Ever written Haiku about The Grass on Rohan's fields? Too easy. Let's try and make it a short story!

We can do these as contests, but I'd rather prefer simple presentations, like we always had. Contests are always so... embarrassing. At least I think so, because I never think my works fit for a contest, though still worth showing to others.

Okay, friends, we've got a lot to do! Let's go!

Manveru
01-22-2004, 05:35 PM
yeah... they do!
why do we have to compete at all? it's for pleasure... for sake of sharing our thoughts with each other...
i don't like the idea of contests at all, so... ah, i guess it's not one of my luckiest day... grrr... don't pay attention to this... if you wanna contests then... whatever... i'll keep posting in the old way, anyway...

And Hirila... they are, really are... don't you hide them from us;)

BTW: it is only one thing needed to revive this thread: WORDS!:D

Friends, this enthusiasm is great! Let's get (and try to keep!) things going.

I am proud to announce this:

The Tolkienologist's Creative Endeavours Hall has opened its doors again. Still a bit dusty, but on the way into a better future.
We welcome all writers of poems, short stories, plays and other literary art form to give a testimonial of their prowess about around this theme:

The Grass on Rohan's fields.

As soon as we are gathered together, we might want to set up some hours of dusting, cleaning, sweeping the cobwebs, crumbs and remnants of the lonely sad last weeks away.
(Of course all other non-written forms of art are welcome. Maybe Lhun can draw us a picture we can hang over the fireplace? Lhun?)

And: Would one of the Guild's leaders be so nice as to try and change the name of the Hall into "Tolkienologists"? It has been wrong since the beginning and noone bothered to correct it... Oh pleeeease do something about it.

I think people want to do justice to the character they choose, and that takes time and effort.

There are very many minor characters in Tolkien's work who could be covered in one post (though knowing my luck, there'll be three long stories about the one I choose in a HoME book I haven't read yet). Perhaps those heavily challenged by schoolwork etc could pick characters such as Ohtar, Brandir the lame, or Fredegar Bolger. All had parts to play in ME's history that are worth recording. We could look through family trees or indexes to remind us who there is.

**.... "- Nice people of this fair city of Tolkienologists, it's so wonderful to discuss various proejcts and ideas.... but let's do it in the right places, particularly provided for the purpose. Each Hall has a respective thread where we can excercise brainstorming. LOOK WHO'BEEN AROUND!!!

In the "Meet the Guild" in the LIbrary of the Istari:

Hello!!

Well... I'm grond. I used to be quite popular here but the real world has intruded and forced me out of Middle-earth. It was with the effort of many that this guild has become a force to be reckoned with and I am very proud of that... and very proud of everyone who had a part in that... especially Lhun and all the other GM and Deputy GM's who made this happen.

I wish all of you the best and hope that you will think of me with fondness and know that I still love Tolkien and I still think of you all.

Cheers,

grond

Hmm...yesterday my laptop died :(
This means that for at least one month I will have no computer in my room.I am expecting to have a new one in March(hopefully I will have it in March.)
I will try to be as active as before, but it will be not that easy, because I will have to go to my university's pc rooms. That is why I will reduce my participation only to doing the things I should to as a GM,my things fo the Study Thread and the organization of The Best of The Best Tournament.

Due to some real life things(studies, exams, work, etc) I have not been able to be around here these days. This situation will be not changed till March 25th.

I was told by Aule that today was the Round between GOT and GoiE for the IRC QUIZ and if we did not have a representative we will lose.

Unfortunately I am not Napoleon and I can not do 7 different things at one one and the same moment. That is why I would like to ask Finduilas to take care of the Quiz,ASAP.I would like to ask her to do her duties as Deputy Guildmaster of The Guild of Tolkienology.Eriol and me are busy with The Best of The Best Tournament at the moment.

Just in case ANYONE cares, this Guild's activities have completely vanished and stopped.

As I've been keeping some statistics in the below thread:
http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?t=14781
you might see for yourself that I had to put "white stars" = "DEAD" for all the activities of the Guild. :(

Isn't it so sad!!! :(

And before some people start blaming me again for being "bossy" and for "meddling" into the GM's affairs, let me remind you that this Guild used to be the most active one not so long ago !!! There was much going on here and people liked it being here (at least most of them!) because there was what to do !!!!! Now ... it's lost! And I'm sorry to see this happening!! :(

So...what I'm doing here is NOT interfering with GM's affairs, but just stating my worries.
For EVERY AND ALL the activities of the Guild of Tolkienology has died !!!

Manveru
03-05-2004, 01:27 PM

And about activities... they can't stand on their own... there's no participation, so the activities went "dead" (sorry that I thought up such a difficult riddle in the Event Game:p ;))

I think this might be one of our worst nightmares...

Now, that the forum has done so well in this place for more than three years, now, the boost it got from the films might just go away... I mean... 11 Oscars... there is nothing to top this.
Lhun, you are definitely right: we have to do something to keep Guild-live flowing.

Though I haven't been a big debater these past times (some of you might remember me from some of the earliest debates of the Guild) my guess concerning this part of action is simple: The Big Debate with the other Guilds has taken a lot of attention from the simpler, smaller things. With the Big D going on, who dared posting a small debate within our own circle? Yes, there are some discussions, but no debates with teams and judges etc.
Judges seem to be a good incentive because they promise some form of statement, critic, "afterlife" after the discussion has stopped.
If someone has an idea on how to start this action again, please go forward. (Or simply start to look for teammates and start doing it!)
A call to bravery from a coward. Why I don't start a debate? Because I have no idea what I want to know.

So much for this.
And Man: Can't you just give another hint in the events game? To make it easier. You see what you have done!
*cough* bad boy *cough*

Gil-Galad
03-05-2004, 05:07 PM
Well,Lhun is right in a way,but not about everything.

It is true that it has been really quiet and dark in The Halls of Tolkienology for about a month. It is true that we should make something.

It is unbelievable that we were not able to gather 3members for the IRC debate!!!The Guild with biggest traditions!!!!!!

But at the same time we should be realists. For some time the whole TTF has been really quiet place. Not only our Guild is so silent these days, but all the others.I browse almost everyday in the other Guilds, because I should take care of The Best of The Best Tournament, and I must confess that all Guilfds are pretty silent.Actually, though it seems that everything "has died here"(I cannot agree with such phrase),GoT has been the most active one.

Maybe one of the reasons is that most of the true Tolkien fans and members of GoT are pretty busy these days.Even I have lots of problems with my free time.

The same is the situation with the other Guilds, all of them.

I believe that we are the Guild with the most interesting threads and the biggest amount of activities. The problem is not in the Guild and its activities, but in the members. Our real-life problems have reached us at one and the same time and many of us are not able to spend the time we want in The Guild.

I hope that soon everything will be ok,we should work on that problem.

I do no think there is any place for panic or whatever. The only thing everyone can make is to find some more time for GoT.

Manveru

Lhun?! Here?! Impossible...;)
Ah!You know me, Angel, ... I fly in, cause some trouble and fly away... :p

But I wouldn't like it to be this way!
I'd like to "fly in" and stay longer!

Now... don't get me wrong...but I personally DO NOT see and understand this Guild to become or/and to be a debating arena only!
What I mean that debates are OK but they have their place and I see a lot of efforts and energy have been dedicated to debates... All right! Nothing bad in this, indeed!
But what about the other activities????!!!!
Don't tell me that the only possible thing to do within the GoT is to debate!
I, for one, have never really enjoyed debating!

What of Helcaraxe's wonderful threads?
What of some of the old topics?
What of the Study-project?
What of the Gallery - project?
What of the Lectures - project?
What of the Essays - project?
What of the Quiz - project?

e....t....c....

All - dead because of some debates and trivia-games going on somewhere else???

As for having free time for the Guild's activities, I see it v.v., my friend, G-G! :)
I think that no matter how busy one can be (like myself lately), if there's something catching the interest, some exciting and vital activity going on, one would gladly find time to participate. I'm speaking out of experience!!!

Good to see you back, "boss"-y wraith... :D
Ah! At least one is glad to see me back! :D

For a long time I have tried to make the members take part in some activities like The Gallery of Characters or The Gallery of Drawings(I am really sorry to confess it but The Gallery of Character might be only a thread without anything in it!!Where are our talented members, who can make beautiful drawings?!?!?)

I do believe that the things will get better, the only thing we should do is dedicate some more time to our beloved Guild.

Don't tell me that the only possible thing to do within the GoT is to debate!
I, for one, have never really enjoyed debating!I have to really care about the issue to enjoy a debate; I don't enjoy it for its own sake. I have been concentrating on my creativity of late rather than essays, and have posted recently in the Hall.

Also, it took me a while to work out how to post a picture in the new version of vBulletin, and it seems that, if I have understood it rightly, the number of pictures per person is limited and will need housekeeping, which puts me off.

I will take some time to walk the greener paths in this guild, to see where I can better contribute.

btw: it's not so warm in BG... i was tricked:p;)Even Kilimanjaro has snow - it depends how high up you are, not how close to the equator  :p

I have to admit to being tied up with other cares lately. I am one of a group of trustees who are in the process of acquiring a Victorian Brewery building to convert into an Arts Centre (http://woottonbassettarts.mysite.freeserve.com) for our town. It's actually at the bottom of my garden, and they were going to convert it into flats (apartments) . We have got to the stage where everyone agrees we can have it for free, but the final rubber stamp is still required, and then the real work starts.

I will try to join in when I can, though.

yeah, i'm back, folks :( (second frown, yeah, i know... it happens to the best of us, right? -- though that fluffy yellow smilie on my monitor thinks different)

i wish i could have stayed there just a day... an hour... a sec more... time's not fair (oh, i think i wrote about that cruel phenomenon once...)
and another quote of myself:

a thousand years
'tis not enough
to appease my ears...

yeah... (eternity is too short a time, too, btw;))

still, i'm glad we made it (look how far we've come my baby...) it was a remarkable time... Maia is... is... ah :o , i don't think i can find proper words i would like to see here... so just ... ... ... ... and BG is great ---> patriam bellam habetis, guys, et antiquam. (you've got a beautiful country, guys, and ancient)

:(

it's good (and NOT so good at the same time) to be back...

-------------
It's flippin' 'ard work, and takes up a lot of time. Maybe I should holiday in Bulgaria too.
just make sure to make it longer than four days... it's worth much more than that

and Findi, don't worry... it wasn't my last visit there (praying that SHE didn't got fed up with my stay), i know there was too little time and... it was wholly dedicated to one special person, so... life's still rolling around (and laughing at us all) and i plan to live long, you?;)

and wraith, what pictures are you talking about, eh?
(say please...:p)

Man, I'm sure you've had a great time. When you are with the one you love, it always is so. So it's probably better than you two weren't split even for a second by some folks from the I-net...;)
Anyway, now if you have had the chance to come to your senses and get some photos it's compulsory that you show them to us! ;)
If not..next time...;) Hehe...then the folks may show up too...;)

Reading Mum's words I remember a phrase from a film (The Life of David Gale if not mistaken...) ...it was osmething like that:

"There once was a girl,
named Berlin
who liked a bit now-and-again.
Not now-and-again,
but now
and again...and again..."

Sorry for this "off-topic" thing...glad you have enjoyed yourselves. :)

I would like to apologize for not being active for a long time.

I was on a long vacation in Bulgaria(actually it was not a vacation due to lots of problems there),then I was on a journey around Europe and finally I had to finish my projects.

I finished the most important one on the May 1st,during the opening day at the European Comission and despite my exams(which are in three weeks and a half) again I can spend my time at TTF and The Guild of Tolkienology.

I am truly sorry for this long period of doing nothing for The Guild of Tolkienology.I know that having in mind my position of Guild Master of The Guild of Tolkienology there can be no excuses for my being offline.

But now I am back and I see that there are lots of things to be done for our beloved Guild.

However, there's still a lot to be done. Things have greatly changed for the guilds on TTF and we shall have to adapt to these new trends if we want to keep this place as a true Tolkien's shrine.

While I shall not be as active in here as I want to at the start (see explanation in the "Future of GoT" thread), the new foundation will have me as an active 'member' and I will be checking into the artwork section to post my work. ;) (some of our collected work might be used for Mr. Da Pence's cafepress site, to boost sales? Dunno what it is though, once a country has had a person elected as pope, they immediately revert back to the use of latin. (couldn't resist there, Man. :p )

But in the meantime, allow me to pose an update to my pending move and redecoration. Today my partner (my own Sylvie) and I picked out the tiles for the bathroom and kitchen, on top of the kitchen itself. Wooden floors have been put into the planning and plaster for the walls. An oaken beam is waiting to be mounted in between the living and dining room, to top things off. (Same style across the entire apartment, the wood even matches that of the wooden doors of the kitchen)

Made photographs of how things look now (4) and will take pictures of the rooms when they are done. :)

I think you misread their intentions, GG. We do not want GoT to go into the F&J... We are striving to keep it out of that section, but we need to act before the guilds-sections are being closed, or we will find ourselves there.

Aka... we need to put some action into this. Our collective, by whichever name it will continue to exist, needs to make decisions rapidly and act accordingly, otherwise we will have lost the advantage.

Manveru

i must be too tense today... the future of the guild is "debated" (and nothing more...) in the respective thread...

and yes... of course he missread this... for me, whole this thing is starting to grow out of shape... i just want some place to meet people i like to spend time with, share some ideas, pieces of "written word", arts and stuff... no matter how it's called and where it is placed (before you beat me to the ground... mind you, i don't want for our guild to end up in a place it doesn't belong either).

in whole this long run for the so-called "resurrection" we lost the meaning of this place...

no comment...

Hello everyone. My apologies for not being active for a while, this is one of the first chances I've had to post in a long time. I haven't been active because of GCSE examination revision and a few practical exams, and I probably wont be active for the coming 3 1/2 weeks. But after that, I promise to be more active. Just a flying visit, really, I dont have any time to participate at the moment :( . Stupid exams.

Good Luck Morgoth!

WELCOME, WELCOME, NEW FRIEND!!!

I see you have followed the good advice of our precious princess Finduilas ;) :) GOOD! :D

In the halls of the Guild of Tolkienology you will find a lot to read and enjoy if you are a "hard-core" Tolkien fan.

Soon (perhaps  ) this place will undergo some "cosmetic" changes but the Tolkien spirit will be kept.

Feel at home and feel free to post wherever you like. :) Fresh minds are always welcome! :D

Greetings, all. I wasn't precisely certain if this is the proper venue to announce this, but I was looking at the member list, and I wish to inform whoever is in charge that ShakytheMohel, my former TTF name, is no longer operational.

Gil-Galad
06-02-2004, 11:17 AM
Oooo I am glad to see you back Shaky.....Arthur.
It is not a problem that your name is changed.Actually the member list will be soon deleted, because we decided to change some things. From now The Guild of Tolkienology will be more like an open society,a place where everyone can post when he thinks that he says something to say about the different topics and activities.Just like Aldarion's Guild of Mariners, everyone who loved the sea was most welcome.

The same is here, everyone who loves Tolkien and the serious things about him and his world is most welcome here.

Enjoy your stay here Arthur :)
