Some can be found on peer-2-peer (p2p) software, such as Kazaa.

I, for one, have to type quotes straight out of the books, because I'm not aware of any place that has the books online. I don't think anybody could do that without getting in trouble over copyright issues.:)

I have to type everything too, so my quotes are never very long. Sometimes I see really long quotes from other people, I guess they must have the books online or something or they would get terrible RSI.

I have a fast typing speed, so typing up isn't a problem for me. However, if someone has copied a decent chunk of text onto a website, then I say 'thanks!' and use that if it's relevant. For instance, This one (http://www.users.cts.com/king/e/erikt/tolkien/tolkien.htm)has some excellent teaching and quotes.

I think the best favour anyone can do if they really love to write is to learn to touch-type. Elgee's post count is testimony to her very fast typing speed. It's a struggle to begin with, but once you can type properly you just keep getting faster and faster. For typing things from Tolkien's works, it means that you can keep your eyes on the book; and for typing stuff out of your head (like this post), you can keep your eye on the screen and edit out any typos before you post.

Edit: I just put TYPING TUTOR in a search engine - there are loads out there, and some are free.

I was 27 when I learned to type. My all-in-one printer has OCR, but I've never used it.

^^ The Hobbit ^^

I'm sure there are electronic copies of LOTR and The Sil too.

Ithrynluin

Aulë, the link you posted does not work.

Like I said before, several works can be found on Kazaa: The LOTR, The Hobbit, The Sil,... and not only in English!

Copyrights may seem like a problem, but I doubt that anyone on this forum doesn't have a "legal" copy of the books already...and not everyone has a scanner, or the time to type some long passages.

Arvedui

And of course, there is always the nice fellow forum-member who offers you a copy by e-mail.;)

I can usually type pretty fast so it's not a problem for me to type words, but it sometimes get irksome if you have to type long passages out of books, speically those will Elvish Words and heavy punctuation.
I read it somewhere that the Tolkien Estate doesn't approve of Electronic Copies of his work, but for scholars and researchers, doing most of their research online, they are pretty necessary?:(

I have all of my Tolkien- books right next to my comp, and I like looking for specific quotes and actually typing them.. It seems like 'cheating' if you just copy-paste them from somewhere else..

For shame. All you people wanting free copies of poor Master Tolkien's work.

try looking in the files section at this LINK (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Rangerdave_stuff)

And be sure to check out all the other goodies.
The interactive map is fun, and the character scans and jpeg maps are useful.

And the pic of Wonko the Sane is pretty neat.

Just do me a favor. Don't tell your friends. I don't want to start a mad rush on yahoo's pitiful server.

Errmm, none of the files work, RD.
You got my hopes up there.:(

They all worked fine for me. You're on my 'favourites', RD. And of course you know what to do if your bandwidth bulges; sell the advertising space and move to a bigger house.

Aulë

Ahh good, everything works now.

Thanks RD, you'll be forever in my debt. :D

I suppose I must first sign up as a user of Yahoo groups to see the stuff? Seems like it's time for me to sign up then...

You shouldn't need to. I didn't sign in. click on 'files' and you should see the list.

Aulë
04-21-2003, 01:03 PM
Likewise. I added HoME2 and 4 :)

Niniel
04-21-2003, 01:07 PM
I could see the list, but I wasn't able do download stuff. When I right-clicked it and tried to download it said it couldn't download, since the page was not avalaible or something. :(

Idril
04-21-2003, 01:10 PM
hmmm that just happened to me as well - think it happened to Aulë earlier - think you just need to keep trying. Maybe the site's being overloaded by all us TTfers rushing to download bits:)

Niniel
04-21-2003, 02:21 PM
It worked when I signed up as a Yahoo member, so now I've got almost all the parts of the HOME that I missed! Yay! All I have to do is print them...

Yahoo sucks, but it is free so what can you do.
for some reason, yahoo only allows so much bandwidth per day. So if you get bounced, try again as after midnight.

sorry for the trouble

Being the nice person and ubberly cool one RD is, he has kept the option that everyone non-yahoo user or not can download the files. And if you are having some trouble specially with the pdf and Word documents then I recomend to you to left click on the file and select the option, "Open in the new Window" once you will do this, a box will appear asking whether and whither do you want to save the file and then the download will start. it helps often specially if the files are not downloading in the correct way.
It sould work fine with Opera, Mozilla and IE6 and on Windows.
And so Sorry RD for not PM'ing, it totally slipped of my mind.

By the way Pippin, is BOLT2 avabale there? i can find every HOME book except for the Shaping of MiddleEarth and BOLT2?
Bouncing off Yahoo is a pretty bad order but often gets right if you disconnect and re-connect again.

Niniel
04-22-2003, 06:17 PM
Well, I got everything I wanted in the end. Yay! I did find BOLT 2 there, somewhere at the top of the list.

Aulë
04-22-2003, 06:21 PM
Yes, I uploaded HoME2 and HoME4 to the list. (I hope that's OK with RD...)

Scatha
04-22-2003, 06:26 PM
Whoa, glad I caught this. Awesome RD. :)

I'll be downloading this stuff tonight.

EDIT: Downloaded the stuffs, thanks RD.
Would anyone happen to have HoME 3?

Niniel
04-23-2003, 09:16 AM
That is The Lays of Beleriand, isn't it? It was there (only spelled wrong), I downloaded it.

Arvedui
04-23-2003, 09:33 AM
The Lays of Beleriand IS HoME III.
BTW, thanks RD!:)

I could make the stills (one shot). Unfortunately, I don't have software that enables me to make moving. But I am good at photo editing stills - I can do frames, black and white, text, several effects, whatever.

FREEDOM!

I must admit, I can no longer stand sitting back and not being able to do those cool little dashes and accents above the letters of certain words in the world of Tolkien. I also acknowledge that they are present in our own language. The problem is, I don't know how to put them into text. Could someone clue this fool in?
