Gil-Galad

The Great Debate Tournament is over.Although it is not officiallly over, the last round is on the past.
Now a time comes to discuss the Guild's results, our performance and the problems we faced.
First of all I would like to thank to all members who participated in the Torunament:
Tolkienologists
-Anamatar IV
-Beleg
-Eledhwen
-Eriol
-Eöl
-Finduilas
-Gate7ole
-Gil-Galad
-Lantarion
-Lhunithiliel
-Manveru
-Mormegil
-Mrs. Maggott
-Starflower
I woulsd like especially to thank Lhinithiliel,Eriol,Anatamar IV,Beleg for being the heart and the soul of our team.
Everyone did his best, but let me now say some words about the problems we faced:
Choosing a side in a debate
It is really funny to mention this problem, but it is a fact that we had some problems with choosing the best possible side.
It is essentially to be said that we lose most of the debates in which we were the Guild which was suppoes to pick up a side. There are several reasons fot that:
-We were leaded by our feelings and personal opinions. One of the mistakes we did was that we did not make serious approaches before some debates and that was fatal. We were leaded by our hearts, not by Tolkien's opinion. And our opponents made use of our mistakes.
-Talking about approach, several times we just chose a topic, without serious researches before choosing it and we definitely had some problems.
-It is sad to be said, but sometimes the judges were not absolutely neutral. Some of them always had their own opinions and they took one of the two sides unconscienciously. It is impossible to predict what will be their opinion, but at least we can try to chose the side some of them would take.
Judging
We had several problems with judges.
-Some of them obviously were not prepared enough to be judges and their knowledge was not big enough.
-Others voted for our opponents without clear explanation why, they were just lazy to read a whole debate and just picked up one of the two Guilds.
-Some of the judges had problems with members of the Guild and that pre-determined their choice.(I must confess that it is my fault for one of the judges to vote against us,due to problems between us :( )
Closing posts-when to post them
One of the problems were our closing posts.
-Some of them were posted too early. Thus out opponents had enough time to make their closing posts, having in mind ours(for example Round 2)
-Others were posted too late and some of them were not accepted although in most of the cases we were not warned by the hosts that the end of the debate was coming.
Decision:Probably the best decision I see is the one who is supposed to close the debate for our Guild,to write his post and save it somewhere on his pc.Thus he we will be able to read our opponents' last post and he will have time to make some little changes, having in mind theirs.
What is more he or she can post it in the very last moment. Our opponents will not have time answer or to make their closing post, having in mind ours. Thus we will have the last word, and sometimes that is of greatest importance.
Let's be more flexible ;)
The "Greeny project"
I cannot say I am satisfied with the results, but definitely we had some successs.
Most of the debates were without "greenies" and one and the same persons had to participate in the different Rounds.
BUT!Some members who started as "greenies" had a great success, due to their unique abilities and knowledge of course, and they are now Deputy Guild Masters (I mean you Eri ;) )
Others were not brave enough in the beginning, but with the time they learned a lot and grew up not only as debators(in terms of abilities) but also as persons (Findi, don't hide yourself, come out ;),you are the one I am talking about ;) ) and
Of course I shoud not miss Manveru ,who was so charming that even some Maia fell in love;)
I will say it once again,I am not satisfied with the amount of "greenies" as a whole.
And I can assure you that this project will be part of our debating policy in the future. It showed it worked!!!!!
Having in mind all these things a new project is about to be started very soon(after the official end of the Tournament).
There will be three kinds of debates.
-Among members of the Guild(where mostly the new members will be able to learn how to debate)-discussion thread about our mistakes will be opened after every debate.
-Every month there will be at least one debate with another Guild-(The Guild of Eruhuni will be our first guests for an interesting debate in the middle of December)-Thus we will have the chance to learn from those who are better than us.(GoiE,GoS,GoP)
-There will be some extra debates like 1vs1 between the experienced members of The Guild of Tolkienolgy and guests from the other guilds.
-A big surpirse is being planned to be placed here, with the help of Ithrynluin.A surpirse which will stay in the history of TTF.And I will need all your help!!!But let first WM and Beorn decide whether this surprise can become a fact.
Comments are expected.Let's do some useful job!!!!!!!!
Eri,you are the debating expert ;)
I am sorry for some "missed" letters, but I am really exhausted after a hard day ,full of scandals, and that is the last thing I do before I turn in. :o :o :o
