mine is when gandalf is fighting the balrog

Gandalf: You shall not pass!!!!!

and

Aragorn: Are you frightened?
Frodo: ..Yes..
Aragorn: Not nearly frightened enough!!

those lines gave me shivers when the characters said them:D :D

My favorite from the book and movie is:
Gandalf to Frodo about Gollum:
"Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it ot them? Then do not be so swift in dealing out death in judgement. For even the wise cannot see all ends."

I am not sure if it is an exact quote, but it's close enough I guess.

Har Har! :D

My favorite ADDED quote:

"They come in pints?!"

My favorite KEPT quote:

"Fool of a Took! Throw yourself in the next time!"

I think I can safely speak for absolutely everyone when I say the best lines are:

1) Gandalf: "Is it secret? Is it safe?!"
(not necessarily the words but the manner in which it's spoken)

2) Arwen: "If you want him, come and claim him!"

3) Aragorn: "Let's hunt some orc."

4) Arwen: "What's this? A Ranger caught off guard?"

seriously though, strangely the one that has the biggest emotional effect on me is when Sam run's out of the woods and Frodo is paddling off and he cries "no, no, no, no!" Not much of a line, but wonderful desperation in the delivery.

A point that the Webmaster brought up in his online chat on CNN.com that seemed to ring true with several of the people logged on was that the most compelling quotes and moving scenes were those which lifted words directly from the book without alteration...Just a thought.

Personally I am appalled by the frantically sputtering "Wildman Gandalf" ranting his line about "...is it safe?". It's one of the times where the character is most poorly represented.

Tolkien made quite clear the nature of Gandalf and even stated that "Gandalf, please, should not splutter...". He goes on to mention that he is a character of noble bearing and presence of mind. "Though he may seem testy at times, has a sense of humour, and adopts a somewhat avuncular attitude to hobbits, he is a person of high and noble authority, and great dignity."

Now one can simply discount this as the rantings of the author in a letter about the Disney Manuscript for their early attempt at making the movie and has no bearing upon any subsequent adaptation, or one can look at Peter Jackson's words when he said,

"Filming three films at once has never been done before, in addition to which the project features thrilling special effects, so it was essential to plan everything down to the last detail. We owe Prof Tolkien and his fans our best efforts to make these films with the integrity they deserve."

UK Telegraph:10/13/99

http://www.portal.telegraph.co.uk/htmlContent.jhtml?html=%2Farchive%2F1999%2F10%2F13 %2Fwtol13.html

One would suspect that, with Jackson claiming reverence for Tolkien, he would have shown his (Tolkien's) characters the integrity Tolkien described...

ReadWryt, I don't think you can get where you want to go with that comment. Generally, people have a lot more emotion tied up in things they know well than things they don't. When the actors re-enact our favorite moments from the books (which, coincidentally, are generally the most dramatic/emotional/entertaining parts) we find it more compelling than when we see another scene for the first time. This is particularly true when:

1. As I said before, it is the most important scenes where PJ lifted most faithfully from the book--an argument IN FAVOR of him trying his best to give all tribute possible to JRRT's books, within the confines of telling an intelligible story; and

2. The lines in question are great prose from arguably the greatest fantasy author of all time.

I don't think it's surprising that, as you say, the most compelling scenes were those with dialogue most closely following the book. I imagine almost all movie adaptations of great books would evoke similar responses from fans--the action in the movie is naturally compressed, but elongates around moments of great import. This allows the fan to become more deeply involved in and appreciate that moment more. It doesn't mean Jackson could have made a 10-hour movie, and I think we all understand the commercial (NOT philosophical) reasons he couldn't do that.

I'm not saying that the film needed to be one second longer then it was, I'm saying that people in a particular online interview and chat in general agreed with the Webmaster. We would have to wait until anyone who saw the film without reading the book has had a chance to devour the printed version to ask them, but what I am saying David meant by the statement was not so much a jibe at Jackson's screenplay as it was a testiment to Tolkien's ability...*Shrug*

Of course you are welcome to presume whatever you wish about "where I was going" with my statement, and I realize that you posted while I was editing and adding more onto my post, so I shall wait to see what other conclusions you wish to jump to about the direction of my posting before I say on...

inspite of readwyrt's constant whining and nit picking on every single thread, even though it invited postive responces...

Gandalf to the Balrog; "You shall not pass!!" (the second time)
Gandalf; "fly, you fools"
Galadriel; Whatever she said at the mirror.
Gandalf; "Wizards are never late, etc......"
Gollum; "Shire" "Baggins"
Arwen; When she shed a tear for Frodo
Elrond; "I was there the day men failed..." or whatever he said
Gimli; "And you shall have my ax"

Foe,

I'm not whining, I'm making valid points using the words of both Tolkien and Jackson. Whining is when you can't make a post without making some snide remark about the fact that others are posting instead of making a point yourself, which actually describes nearly half of the posts YOU make yourself.

Foe-Hammer

when you have had your say, yet continue to whine about something that you cannot change.
Which is what you are doing with this movie.

You apparently put PJ on a pedestal and now you are in the process of knocking him off. Why you continue to whine about it to the rest of us is beyond me. I don't think any of us put him up as high as you did, but that is probably because you never understood (and still don't) the reality of screenplay writing and thought PJ's words meant that the movie would follow the book perfectly.

Frodo: "It cannot stay in the Shire!"

Some of my favourite quotes are already mentioned, but I shall add two funny ones, both Gimli's:

I almost ROFL when Aragorn wanted to throw him over the chasm in Moria and he yelled something like "NO dwarf tossing here!".

And when he jumped he almost fell into the deep, Legolas reflexively grabbed his beard and saved his live while Gimli screamed something like "Not the beard, do NOT touch the beard!"

So funny :D ...

LOL, I agree, it wasn't exactly an 'authentic quote'. But I enjoyed it nevertheless.

As modernly macho as it was, Aragorn's "Let's hunt some orc!" was a pretty good quote - and Gandalf's advice to make the most of what we are given. (Words to that effect.) Arwen's "if you want him, come and claim him" seemed a bit melodramatic?? Pippin and Merry had some great lines - the pint quote at the Prancing Pony was fabulous! And I agree with PRH about Sam running after Frodo - strongly emotional. What about when Frodo says he has to go by himself and Samwise says "I know - and I'm coming with you!" The reunion in the boat made many pull out their tissues!

"When all else fails, follow your nose"
- Gandalf

I couldn't believe it when I heard that quote. I laughed out loud because I didn't think that they would put something so cheesy in that made Gandalf sound like Toucan Sam from the Froot Loops commercials, "Follow your nose! It ALWAYS knows!"

Then I was shown that they could get cheesier " Let's hunt some orc".

Is that JRR I hear rolling in his grave?

Loved Boromirs speech at the council When he said " One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its passes are guarded by more than just orc's. There is evil there that does not sleep. A barren waste of ash and dust. The very air you breathe is a poisenous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. It is folley.
Gave you a great sense of what Mordor is like and the dread men have of it. Also helped explain to those who haven't read the book why Boromir was so tempted to take the ring. IE the task is hopeless and here is why.

I am so glad that Pippin did NOT say anything when the whole skeleton fell into the well.

Elrond: No indeed. It is hardly possible to seperate you even

All of Pippin's lines: Pints, breakfasts, quest, mission, thing, etc
Merry: I think I've broken something! (Pulls out carrot)

Also, "Fly you fools" coz they're the last words of Gandalf (;) )
Gimli's mutterings about not needing to get his strength back are amusing. So is his "If anyone asked for my opinion, and I note, they have not...."

Definitely Gandalf's second "You shall not pass!!!" followed by the first hint of desperation we witness in Gandalf (aside from the odd "Is it safe?" sequence, which passed too quickly to really bother me) by his rasping "Fly, you fools!"
I always thought it was funny, how Gandalf repeatdedly calls everyone FOOLS through out the story - even on his, seemingly, last breath! One can not contest - the man KNOWS how to make an exit! ;)

Aragorn: Are you afraid...not nearly afraid enough
Gandalf: You shall not pass
Sam: I made a promise mr frodo, don't u leave him, samwise gamgee, don't u leave him, and i didn't mean to (someting like that)

My fave quotes are:

Galadriel(at the beginning):"But they were all of them, deceived, for another was created."
Cate Blanchett's voice is so deep, rich and enigmatic. She portray's Galadriel brilliantly.

Gandalf:"Fly you fools!"
I love the 'Deafening Silence' in that bit with just the cracking of rock and then the soprano singing and everyone's emotions shown on their face.
Even though I knew he was coming back, it still brought a lump to my throat.

Well, obviously, I'd definitely say that my favourite quotes are mostly all said by Sam, Pippin, Merry, Gandalf, and I guess a few more random ones every now and then. Mostly the hobbits though, and Gandalf, though I hate how he picks on Pippin, had some great lines too.

Gandalf to Frodo:
"Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life, can you give it to them frodo? then do not be so swift in dealing out death in judgement. for even the very wise cannot see all ends."
Gandalf is so wise. i love it when he says that lol

Merry and Pippin:
"whats that?" - pip
"this my friend is a pint" - merry
"it comes in pints? im getting one" - pip
lol CUTEST part in the whole movie! cept in the beginning with the dragon firework that was SO cute and hilarious lol

PRH: i love that part too i always get all weepy at that part and the 9th time i saw the movie i actually started bawling i was crying so much lol thats why its in my sig. so thats another one of my fav quotes:

Sam to Frodo:
"I made a promise Mr.Frodo... a promise. Dont you leave him Samwise Gamgee... and i dont mean too... i dont mean too"

Hmm. that's tough
I could probably quote the whole movie.
Let's see, these are at the top of my chart.

Frodo: You're late!
Gandalf: A wizard is never late. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.
(both laugh)
Frodo: Oh, it's good to see you Gandalf!

Frodo: You know us BAgginses where ell thought of before you came along.
GAndalf: If you are talking about the inciedent with the dragon, i was barely involved. All i did was give your uncle a nudge out of the door.
Frodo: well whatever it is you did, you have been officialy labeled a disturber of the peace.

Sam: I made a promise to myself mr. frodo. I said don't you lose him samwise gamgee. And i don't mean to.I really don't

G: come on let's go.
Pip: what about breakfast?
G: you already had it
P: what about second breakfast?
Merry: I don't think wizards know about second breakfast.
P: what about elevensies, luncheon, afternoon tea, suppeer, dinner? He knows about those right?
M: i wouldn't count on it Pip.

there's a lot more, but i won't bother with them ( for today, anyway)

There's so many! I love Bilbos speech :D The way it goes from funny to freaky.

Bilbo:Today is my one hundred and eleventh birthday! Alas, eleventy one years is much too short a time to live among such excellent and admirable hobbits! I don't know half of you half as well as I should like and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve! I have things to do. I've put this off for far too long. I regret to announce this is the end! I'm going now. I bid you all a very fond farewell! Goodbye.

Sam:Nothing important. That is, I heard a good deal about a ring, and a dark lord, and something about the end of the world. Please don't hurt me, sir, don't turn me into anything unnatural.

Pippin:What's that?

Merry:This, my friend, is a pint.

Pippin:It comes in pints? I'm going to get one.

Sam:Pippin, you've had a whole half already!

Frodo:What are you doing?

Merry:Sausages, tomatoes, nice crispy bacon!

Sam:We saved some for you!

Frodo:Put it out, you fools, put it out!

Pippin:That's nice, ash on my tomatoes.

Boromir:It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing. Such a little thing.

Gandalf:Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many who live deserve death, and some who die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Do not be too eager to deal out death and judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends, but my heart tells me that Gollum still has a part to play, for good or ill. Before this is over, the pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many... So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time we are given. There are other forces at work in the world than the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the ring, which means that you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.

Gimli:Not the beard!

Boromir:Give them a moment, for pity's sake!

Galadriel:Instead of a Dark Lord, you would have a queen, not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Tempestuous as the sea, and stronger than the foundations of the earth! All shall love me and despair!.. I passed the test. I will diminish, and go into the west, and remain Galadriel.

Merry:Run, Frodo. Go! *waves to the Orcs* Hey, you, over here, this way!

Pippin:It's working!

Merry:I know it's working, run!

Strider:Let's go hunt some Orc!

Gotta love those Hollywood scriptwriters!;) And the scenes where Gandalf is bumbling around Bagend and when Boromir drops the sword where pretty funny too :p

I have to agree with Morgaphry up there regarding Galadriel at the outset of the film. She manages to set the scene for the whole film, and it always sends shivers down my spine.

The Lidless Eye (nice name!) - "The way it goes from funny to freaky" - that describes Bilbo's speech wonderfully!

My favourite quotes of the moment are (including the above):

"And they call it a mine... a MINE!"
- Gimli

"Don't turn me into anything.. unnatural."
- Sam

"A shadow and a threat has been growing in my mind. Something draws near, i can feel it."
- Legolas

"Fly, you fools!" & "Fool of a Took. Throw yourself in next time and rid us of your stupidity!"
- Gandalf

"Shire! Baggins!"
- Gollum

"You are not yourself." & "Sam, we're still in the Shire. What could possibily happen?"
- Frodo

The whole film is just so quotable!

Sam: "If I take one more step, it'll be the farthest away home I've ever been."
Frodo: "Come on."

I have to agree with both Kementari and Greenleaf with the Samwise Gamgee quote, makes me laugh each time I watch it!

Another one to throw onto the fire is this one:

Originally spoken by Gandalf
" Deserves it! I daresay he does. But many that live deserve death. Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."

Just think what would have happened if Gollum was killed!

I liked:
"In place of a dark lord you would have a queen! Beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Treacherous as the sea! Stronger than the foundations of the earth! All will love me and despair!"

"I cannot do this alone..."
" Lets hunt some orc"
" I have not the heart to tell you... For me the grief is still too near..
All of Pippins lines especially 'second breakfast etc', the 'pint' sequence, and At the counci; of Elrond: " You need someone of intelligence on this sort of mission... quest... thing!
Merry: Well that rules you out Pip!"

These are my favorite!

Legolas: Something draws near. I can feel it.
Aragorn: You cannot wield it. None of us can.
Boromir: There is evil there that does not sleep.
Arwen: If you want him, come and claim him!

Along with many others, I liked the whole pint thing that Pippin says. I also loved the "baaggggggins, SHI-AHH!" that the nazgul says- that sounds so awesome! :D Gandalf's "many live deserve death..." short speech was really neat too.

"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." -Bilbo

Sam: "Nothin' important! That is, I heard a good deal about a ring and a Dark Lord, and something about the end of the world, but-"

I thought this was very powerful... Galadriel: You are a ring bearer, Frodo. To bear a ring of power, is to be alone. This task was appointed to you. And if you do not find a way, no one will.

Love this one too... Galadriel: Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.
I have many others that I like but no time to remember them all!!!

Boromir's speech at Council of Elrond, mainly the "One does not simply walk into Mordor...not with a thousand(or was it ten thousand) men could you do this."

Merry:...Tomatoes (he said it weird), and some nice toasty(or crispy) bacon.

Gandalf: Fool of a took...

there's more, but i haven't seen it in a while...those r my faves tho.

I am definitely with lotrobsession on this one...Gandalfs speech to Frodo about those who deserve life and death...it is an awesome quote. I also enjoy the quote: "They come in pints...I'm getting one." and the scene where Gandalf catches Sam eavesdropping...that is definitely a classic.
