I am puzzled by the seeming impossibility of uploading avatars, or using avatars that are supposed to be ready-to-use but don't seem to be available. I already have one I made that I'd like to use.

Can anyone advise me?

You can use an avatar after you reach 100 posts.

Welcome to TTF. And ithrynluin's right, you can only get an avatar when you reach 100 posts. I'm still working towards one. :)

Click on the forum titled "Guild Hall", you will find a link for the 'Guild of Eruhini' there. :)

You do need 100 post to get an avatar but you will find that it does not seem as much as it sounds! :)

Yes, it's a great place. Some highly interesting people and thoughts here.

I'm amazed at the sophisticated structure of this website and how well it works. It's still a bit confusing getting around though. The hardest thing for me at the moment is learning to go directly to a particular thread.

I tried bookmarking them, but evidently a bookmarked thread doesn't mirror any changes that came after it was bookmarked. What do you do to go directly from place to place?

After like a few weeks, it won't be that difficult! I'm use to it now! :)
