The Silmarillion has stories of predominantly the First and Second ages. Unfinished Tales has stories from all three ages.
The History of Middle Earth is 12 volumes long (and does contain a 13th volume, which is really an index.)
Other books I might recommend:
The Annotated Hobbit by Douglass Anderson
The Atlas of Middle Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad
J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography by Humphrey Carpenter
Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien by Humphrey Carpenter (with the assistance of Christopher Tolkien)
Hope that helps. I'm sure others will pitch in with their favorites.

oh yeah! thanks.
one question though.
those 12 books of history, if u would compare them to lets say sillmarillion how much bigger/smaller are we talking here.
is each of the 12 books like a silmarillion in terms of pages?

My best bet would be to search Amazon (http://www.amazon.com) or Barnes and Noble (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/) or even Ebay (http://www.ebay.com). Bear in mind, I can't seem to find a place that sells them all together(all 12.) If you go to either Amazon or Barnes & Noble, you'll at least get an idea of what each of the books are like. Just do a search on "history of middle earth".
Here's an example of the first five books being sold as a boxed set. Keep in mind that these are mass-market paperback books. Clickhere (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0345466454/qid=1072473936/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-1955290-1413728?v=glance&s=books).
Hope this helps.

The HoME books that are relevant to the Published Silmarillion are HoME 10 Morgoth's Ring; HoME 11 War of the Jewels and HoME 12 People of Middle-Earth.
10 and 11 contain most of the info. obtained by C.T for the Published Silmarillion as well as various essays and 12 has some essays dealing with he First Age. (As well as others.)
HoME 6-9 are early drafts of LoTR (the last half of 9 deals 'The Notion Club Papers' deal with something different though and the first half of 12 deals with the history of the Appendix as well as some additional information), 1-3 deal with the very early phase of Tolkien's mythology and 4-5 with the first drafts of the Silmarillion.
I would recommend 10-12 if you are interested in the Silmarillion. :)
ok, thanks.
im gonna buy the unfinished tales first though.

Yes, that would probably be the best thing to do, if you are reading it concurrently with the 'Published Silmarillion'.
It expands on the tale of Tuor and the Narn I Hin Húrin. Have fun. :)
