I really need to rant about this topic, so bear with me. I thought this was probably the best place for it too, as there's only a finite number of people I can offend :) .
Last night, I watched part of a documentary on an American organisation called "The Silver Ring Thing". It's a group that get tons of American tax-payer money to promote abstinence-only sex education. Here's a bit of info:

I can only say this is the worst thing I've ever heard. I was actually shouting at my TV last night, and that doesn't happen as often as you'd think. Abstinence programs like this receive $120b every year from the government, whilst no money whatsoever is put into charities supporting other forms of education. I don't have a problem with having abstinence-only education, as long as it is paired with good information. The group I saw last night peddled downright lies in order to scare impressionable youngsters.
One of these lies was that condoms only protect men, or the assumption that disease goes away when you're married. Furthermore, the head of this organisation spent his free time in his back garden, trying to hit geese in a pond with golf balls. Very Christian.
Sure, abstinence works. That is, if it is abided by. If it isn't, then these groups are letting a whole generation grow up without the right information, putting them at more risk of disease, pregnancy and shame. And if you want proof that it doesn't work for America:
Teenage Pregnancy Rates per 1000:
Russia - 101.7
United States - 83.6
Bulgaria - 83.3
England and Wales - 46.9
Australia - 43.7
Sweden - 24.9
Netherlands - 12.2

And look at the bottom of the list - the country with the most liberal attitude to sex in the world. A lesson to be learnt?
