Indeed, I am not, as of yet, a recognized Scholar amonst you all, yet I am very eager to help as I may. It may seem odd, for this is only my second day on TTF. However, that is not the point of this thread. The point is that I am willing to prepare Luumequentas, aka Essays and accounts, and the such for this guild. I am willing to research any subject brought to me, and have undergone much research into many things of lore/history, especially that of the Rings of Power. Tell me what you think and if any wish to join in (if it is decided that this be done) my quest to understand Tolkien fully, for I am but one man with one mind and the more that work on something the better the results.

Hi Isthir,
Please consider yourself a proud member of the Guild of Scholars! :) Maedhros is our official leader but he is on an extended leave of absence so Elfarmari, Beleg and I are sort of minding the store in the meantime.
I've been trying to generate some discussion on the Lays of Beleriand so feel free to jump in. If you haven't found a copy yet, you can get one used at Amazon easily enough. It's a pleasant surprise! I don't normally go in for poetry but this stuff is really enjoyable.

I plan on picking up many JRRT books today that I have been wishing to read, for I am almost done with the Silmarillion. As well, thank you for the greetings and the membership.
With that said I still wonder on the Luumequentas, perhaps, if after written correctly, they were placed for all to see it would draw intrest to the Guild.

This proposition is not that of Essay, but a collaboration of thoughts and ideas and presented in a format. Furthermore, I would like to form the Luum's into more of a book that can be read chronologically aligned with that of JRRT's mythology, creating in a sense a Book of Lore, though if that were to be I would most likely change the name of the book, but keep each chapters heading as Luumequenta One - That of Creation. My last hope for the Luum's would be to have two versions of them, that of fact, and that written as fiction for a more entertaining read.
Please post all thoughts or concerns about this. As well I would need more than just I to acomplish this endevour, if it wished that it be undergone.

Hail Isthir, from what I have read you are acquiring your HOME's presently?
Once you have got them I'd advise you to read 'Quendi and Eldar', HOME XI, A philological and cultural essay concerning the Elves and their languages; 'Of Dwarves and Men' HOME XII, 'Myths Transformed', HOME X, 'Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth', HOME X and various notes scattered throughout the last three HOME's.
I'll also advise you to read Osanwe-Kenta, A semi-philological essay pertaining to various matters concerning Arda, Thought-transfer and Elves and well as 'Rivers and Beacon Hills of Gondor', both essays published in the perodicle, 'Vinyar Tengwar'. You can view the details here. Vinyar-Tengwar (http://www.elvish.org/VT/)
But the foremost thing I'd advise you would be to read 'The Letter's', a selection of J.R.R.Tolkien's letter's written throughout his life presented by his biographer Humphrey Carpenter and looked over by his son Christopher Tolkien.
They not only provide intresting references and thoughtful incite into his works but also reveal his pattern of thinking, and his general and moral believes; how they were incoporated into his works; his affiliations with philology and the consequent results of it.
In the essays I have listed, you'll find a detailed discussion [Often pewtering down into incoherent rambling] of Tolkien's ideas and thoughts concerning the semantics, geo-political history, workings, theology et al by Tolkien himself.
I am afraid you won't find much in HOME concerning 'The Rings of Power'. But perhaps HOME XII, 'Akallabeth' and certain sections of HOME V will be of intrest to you. For intrinsic details of the evolution of the concept of Necromencer into Sauron the Dark Lord and the transfiguration of the golden ring of Gollum into the One Ring to rule them all, you can turn to first few chapters of HOME VI. Tolkien never wrote much about the Second age, and in much of the legendarium he wrote, barring The Lord of the Rings, Sauron plays second fiddle to Morgoth Bauglir and consequently his deeds, his doings and the motivation behind his acts has been highlighted less compared to Morgoth's.
Whatever little their is present concerning the working of the Rings and the master ring is almost all scattered within the Letter's.
A morsel of what you might discover in the Letter's,
Letter#131 to Milton Waldman
The chief power (of all the rings alike) was the prevention or slowing of decay (i.e. 'change' viewed as a regrettable thing), the preservation of what is desired or loved, or its semblance – this is more or less an Elvish motive. But also they enhanced the natural powers of a possessor – thus approaching 'magic', a motive easily corruptible into evil, a lust for domination. And finally they had other powers, more directly derived from Sauron ('the Necromancer': so he is called as he casts a fleeting shadow and presage on the pages of The Hobbit): such as rendering invisible the material body, and making things of the invisible world visible.
On Literary symbolicism behind the One Ring, you may find this article of intrest. The Cursed-Ring (http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/The-Cursed-Ring)
On a endnote, can you elaborate a bit on your ideas about this 'Lunn'? Not sure I follow completely.
Just for your intrest, Tolkien scholars in Barrow-Downs have started upon a revised 'Silmarillion' project; the details for which you can find here. Silmarillion-revised project. (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=16)
Meanwhile, you should feel free to open any topic here, I hope you'll enjoy your stay in our guild.

Beleg, I thank you deeply for all the warm welcomes and comments. As well I have to refrain from the obtaining of all of HoME due to finacial restraints. I am in the looking for 'Letters' for they greatly interest me. Furthermore, I was simply first intrigued by the Rings of Power, for LotR is loosely based around them (I say loosely for there are questions as to this within my own mind). The further I go in reading the more I become drawn to a great deal of things, but my thoughts on all those things have not had the time to lay out in a cohesive line. As well, I have constraints on my time alloted to reading, for I work just about everyday and for usually over eight hours a day, and while I used to be able to sleep none and still be chipper that is not the case any longer. This is ontop of the writting of my own book and mythology, which is a project that I am very proud of and will share some of if it is asked of me.
As for the Luum's I do not wish to revise The Sil, I would rather leave it to the descendent of JRR to provide us with information in any format he desires. As it may turn out the Luum's may become something of a HoME, Silm, UT, and Appendices hybrid. The vision of the Luum's is ever shifting as of the moment, but the core remains the same. I simply wish for a project to be started within the guild, hoping that we may become more active and the such. The Luum's would provide this, and perhaps we could submit some of them to the Silm project as we see fit. *Shrugs* Just a thought by a young soul.

While I was at work, all ten hours of it, I began to wonder if their was a composition of all that we argue about on TTF, besides the forums themselves. Furthermore, this would have to be based on the Guilds discussions in my mind. I soon found myself very excited about this idea, for (to my knowledge) this is something that even the wonderous GoT's Essays are not. I would still wish it to be chronological, though perhaps it would not be that way for I also envision these as a fictional telling, though the setting and such eludes me at this late/early(2:30am) hour - perhaps a hall of scholars?;)
Or, maybe, this is not to be? For these are all just thoughts.
