Supposedly, you initiate some kind of cow-goat love fest... ;) Well let's say that they don't go out for a drink or twelve, since alcohol is forbidden by the Islamic religion. In India, on the other hand, a birthday is another excuse for buying a few bottles of whisky, going to the farm, abusing the cows, driving your car on the motorway, which seems to be full of people hell bent on killing you, or at least a bunch of people who have signed some sort of mass suicide pact, and you follow that up by a re-visit to the farm in which you pee on the crops...and a huzzah all around and huzzah for those alchoholic crop-peeing cousins of mine in India, and huzzah for turning 16, when you realise that your English teacher is actually quiet the hottie and that there are drinks in life other then rubbishy alco-pops and Bacardi Breezers and you move on to another few years of teenage sordidness and kinky drinking games, whilst going through a great deal of acne inspired teen angst-heartache-yearning for Freddie Prinze Jr and the many other exciting things about being a teenager.

Picking up on Nóm's question: What are the birthday traditions in your neck of the woods? Is it as big a deal as in western cultures, with gifts, birthday cake, parties and the like?

Birthday are pretty often celebrated in one form or the other by those who can afford it. I guess the basic layout isn't much different from the western traditions: parties, cakes, presents, wishes etc are all there with the except of certain items.

My birthday was pretty okay, though a bit boring. :( Though I did have fun going out with friends. :D

And as for any special privilages, I wish. :rolleyes:

If I were a girl, I could have been legally wedded, but I am not. Driving Lisence, Marriage-time, ID card, Voting and assorted material all comes in a big jumbled up pack when one turns 18. :(
However, A-level's have brought a lot of privilages with themselves, from both the school and sibling. :p

This day in 1943 was born Jim Morisson the lead singer of The Doors and in 1966 Sinead O'Connor another great singer. :) And finally something pretty sad. Like today 24 years ago John Lennon was murdered. :(
