Didn't Tolkien event his "sign" himself? Of course it has undergone various minor alterations, such as colour changes or size changes etc. but I think the actualy sign, or signature, if you want, was invented by Tolkien. But then again, I could be wrong.

i always thought it was master T. who invented it (and like Inder said, it changed, but slightly, thru time).

I too believe I have read that the logo was designed by JRRT himself - a pretty nifty caligrapher.
