Where did Boromir say he lost his horse, when he traveled from Minas Tirith to Rivendell?
BlackCaptain
01-25-2003, 03:27 AM
Ive thought and thought, and even looked, and no-were can i even find the answer, but Boromir seems to like the Idea of the Gap of Rohan all the time, so im gonna say... he lost his horse at... somewere in Dunland?

Forgot to ask a Q
What inns are mentioned by name in the books?
Eliot
01-25-2003, 05:02 AM
The Prancing Pony, The Green Dragon, and The Golden Perch. I think that's all.
Flame of Udūn
01-26-2003, 01:27 AM
The Green Dragon, The Prancing Pony, The Golden Perch, and the Old Guesthouse.
Glomund
01-26-2003, 01:56 AM
I missed the old guesthouse, where is it? I still have two more not mentioned.
Flame of Udūn
01-27-2003, 09:29 AM
It is in Minas Tirith, where Pippin meets Bergil. It doesn't seem like much of a name, but I put it in becasue it is capitalised.
I can't find any more, what are they?
Goldberry
01-27-2003, 04:33 PM
The Bridge Inn, and The Floating Log, both mentioned in "The Scouring of the Shire".
I won't ask another question since I didn't get the bulk of the inns.
Eliot
01-27-2003, 06:55 PM
Who's going to do the question now?
Glomund
01-27-2003, 07:50 PM
The Ivy Bush is also mentioned, it is the inn where the Gaffer is talking about Frodos parents in the first part of the book.
I thought the Bridge inn was not its actual name so I missed that when I asked the Q.
Here is the list
Prancing Pony
Ivy Bush
Green Dragon
Floating Log
Golden Perch
Bridge Inn
and Old Guest House, tho I still can't find this one.
Where Pippin and Beregond got their food is not a inn, but the storehouse for the guard, so I did not count it.
Since no one else has asked I will go again,
How many different blades does Frodo carry in the books?
And I will give you the one in the Barrow
Niniel
01-27-2003, 08:56 PM
The Old Guesthouse is where Pippin meets Bergil (I don't know if Bergil actually lives there, I think so, at least during the war).
As for Frodo's swords, I think three: Sting, the Orc sword, and the sword that Sam first used, although he gives it back to Sam right away.
Flame of Udūn
01-28-2003, 05:45 AM
The sword from the Barrow-wights, Sting, the orcish sword and Sam's sword for a few seconds.
Glomund
01-29-2003, 12:14 AM

Who prophesized the comming of Aragorn, and when did he live?
Eriol
01-29-2003, 01:43 PM
Malbeth the Seer, and he lived at the time of Arvedui (20th century T.A.)? I'm not sure about this, I know this is the guy who prophesied the end of the Witch-King, but I think he said something about Aragorn too...
I'll wait for confirmation.

I'll assume magic is the only thing wrong with the first guess so.........
Magic: They can see people who turn invisible with ring, I think that counts as magic
BlackCaptain
02-02-2003, 09:08 PM
nope
Ithrynluin
02-02-2003, 10:35 PM
Weapons: Morgul blades, the mace of the Witch-king
Magic: The Black Breath
Beasts: Black horses, Winged steeds
BlackCaptain
02-03-2003, 01:22 AM
close... u need 2 more in each category, save the beasts
BlackCaptain
02-04-2003, 01:30 PM
Does no one have a guess?
Ecthelion
02-05-2003, 12:20 AM
I have no ideas at all
Anamatar IV
02-05-2003, 12:28 AM
hmm....didn't one of the Nazgul at the Pelannor battle use a dart as the easterlings used?
BlackCaptain
02-05-2003, 03:16 AM
yes, but thats not one of the answers

Magic: They can control your will. At the Ford of Bruinin, they made Frodo unable to speak any longer. And whenever they are around, they make Frodo want to put on the ring. One made Merry follow him, when he was walking through the streets of Bree.
They also have a keen sense of smell. Does that count as magic? Or how about that they can sense the one ring?
BlackCaptain
02-05-2003, 01:29 PM
You got 1 more of the weapons, and you need one more. Merry gets the Black Breath used on him, and that is one of thier magic. The spell you told when Frodo was at the Ford was the Beckoning spell. Thats another one.
If anyone puts together all the replies that people have listed already, youll only need one more weapon, and one more magic. Ithrynluin was closest yet. you should go from there down. Ill give u a hint: Only the witch-king uses these last two. And ultra-keen smell isnt magic, sorry.
so so far u guys have:
Weapons - Morgul blades, mace of the Witch-King, long swords, ?
Magic - Black breath, Beckoning spells, ?
Beasts - Black Horses, Winged steeds
fill in the question marks
Goldberry
02-06-2003, 01:34 AM
Anamatar IV said the 4th weapon earlier. The witch king used a black dart to kill Snowmane.
So we have:
Weapons - Morgul blades, mace of the Witch-King, long swords, black dart
Goldberry
02-06-2003, 01:40 AM
For magic, would you count a "blasting spell"? In The Siege of Gondor, it says:
"Then the Black Captain rose in his stirrups and cried aloud in a dreadful voice, speaking in some forgotten tongue words of power and terror to rend both heart and stone.
Thrice he cried. Thrice the great ram boomed. And suddenly upon the last stroke the Gate of Gondor broke. As if stricken by some blasting spell it burst asunder..."
BlackCaptain
02-06-2003, 01:59 AM
well that dart isnt one of my weapons listed... but sure ittl count... but theres still one more weapon
As if stricken by some blasting spell it burst asunder..."
It says "AS IF", so its not literal. Grond broke the gates, not a spell. you need one more spell, and one more weapon still
Goldberry
02-06-2003, 04:06 PM
Then I think we need a hint!
One magic would be their ability to cast fear down on people.
Weapons - Morgul Blades, Mace of the Witch-King, Long Swords, ?
Magic - Black breath, Beckoning spells, Fear Aura
Beasts - Black Horses, Winged steeds
I can't think of the 4th weapon though....
Idril
02-06-2003, 09:20 PM
Swords of Flame????
BlackCaptain
02-06-2003, 09:34 PM
yup. Heres a hint:
Theres 5 weapons, 3 magic abilaties, and two beasts. They were all named at least once so far, except for one magic abilitie. It can be found in the Appenices of ROTK. That was a HUGE hint so I dont expect it shooud take u guys much longer. the first person to respond with ALL of the answers may post the next question
Goldberry
02-06-2003, 10:24 PM
Weapons - Morgul Blades, Mace of the Witch-King, Long Swords, Swords of Flame, Black darts
Magic - Black breath, Beckoning spells, Fear Aura, Make Frost or Thaw at will
Beasts - Black Horses, Winged steeds
??
BlackCaptain
02-06-2003, 10:34 PM
Congradulations Goldberry, you may post the next question, although Fear Aura isnt an abilaty they have... But good job none-the-less

Q: What do orcs see when Samwise puts on the ring?
Manwė Sślimo
02-08-2003, 08:51 AM
Wasn't it some sore of tall elf prince.
No, they see that when his ring is off, but is elvish cloak is on.
Was it the glow of his sword?
Idril
02-08-2003, 12:14 PM
I didn't think the Orcs saw Sam (or Sting) with the ring on. They guessed he was a tall elf warrior in the tunnel. And then on the stairs Snaga (I think) anyway an Orc saw Sam as 'a giant shape, cloaked in a grey cloak' etc, but at that point Sam did not have the ring on.

Eriol
02-09-2003, 03:04 PM

Hmmm, I think that may have been another name for pipeweed, not a variety....

Idril
02-09-2003, 03:26 PM
How about these?
Longbottom leaf
Galenas
Southlinch
Southern Star

Southfarthing leaf
Old Toby
Brandywine Black
Eriol

Pippin you now, it was Faramir son of none other than Peregrin Took....
hehe am i right for all of that?
Celebthōl
02-09-2003, 03:46 PM

incorrect. There were 2. Boromir himself (obviously) and Faramir. He saw many men of Gondor but those were the only two that HE saw that were described as looking like Boromir (or being boromir himself.)
Since MorgulKing was closest he gets the next question.

ok i don't know the answer to the question but i do know that it is really rediculous that you people take time to argue about whether ont thread is better than another, i mean seriously does it really matter that much if there is more than one place to talk about the same thing. another question (that actually has nothing to do with the game) how many of you look up the answers to these questions, and be honest!
olorin the maia
02-17-2003, 08:00 AM
I rely on my memories of The Hobbit, LOTR, Sil, and UT.
If I don't know the answer outright, then of course I look it up. But that's part of the fun, figuring out where a particular piece of trivia came from. :)
If that doesn't appeal to you, there are many other threads and forums on this website. Go explore! I, like you, am new to this, and have barely scratched the surface.

AirforceBrat, welcome to the forum.
This thread, as you may have noticed, deals solely with trivia on the book The Lord of the Rings. There is a thread in the Hall of Fire called "Quiz/Trivia", which deals largely with trivia from the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and the Histories of Middle-earth. And although you obviously have the right to mouthe your opinion, I think it's up to the 'arguers' whether or not they should argue about similar threads. :)
And the actual point of these trivia pages are to both enhance the readers' knowledge of the innumerable details that Tolkien presented to us in his works, and also to enhance the readers' skill in finding certain passages or sections in the books in order to find answers to the questions asked. So, apparently contrary to what you think, it is not against any 'rules' to look in any of the books for an answer.
Please feel free to attempt any of the questions!

The borders were in the north to Celebrant and to southern Mirkwood, east to the inland sea of Rhun and west to the river Greyflood, and southwards as far as the river Harnen.

olorin the maia

Ents were created at the prayer of Yavanna Kementari, who was troubled that the olvar could not run away to defend themselves from the Children of Iluvatar. Trees were the things she held most dear, "long in the growing, swift shall they be in the felling..."
this is from Silmarillion.

aaaargh! Can it be that I have a different edition? It is the big, one-volume, in English... There is no reason for it to be so hard. It is right there on the map and Frodo mentions it.
Are you sure?
I can't find it.
What letter does it begin with?
Eriol
02-25-2003, 02:13 PM
It is called The Y***
The Yale?
I didn't think that it was a town.
What was the quote where it was mentioned?
Eriol
02-25-2003, 02:19 PM
Well, in my map it is attached to those small squares that mean a town, and Frodo mentions it when he is talking about the need for a shotcut, I think, in either "Three is Company" or "A Shortcut to Mushrooms". It is the part when they talk about not being able to visit "The Great Perch" (or is it Green?). Frodo says that the road makes a great curve and mentions The Yale at the sentence.
Oh well. As I said, I had no idea it would be so tough. I guess you're up Pip.
hehe- it's the Golden Perch
I looked on the map, and there is no square next to Yale.
I couldn't find the quote though.
All I found was A shortcut to mushrooms
'We can cut straighter than than the road anyway,' answered Frodo. 'The ferry is east from Woodhall; but the hard road curves away to the left- you can see a bend of it away north over there. It goes around the north end of the Marish so as to strike the causeway from the Bridge above Stock. But that is miles out of the way. We could save a quarter of the distance if wed made a linefor thr Ferry from where we stand.'
Anyway, my question is 'What were the 5 types of footsteps that could be heard whilst the company were walking through Moria?'
