im really surprised that this hasnt been done yet. I guess this game works like quotable quotes. I post a trivia question and the one who answers it gets to post another. Ill start:

What was the banner of Dol Amroth?

Elu Thingol

There is already a game like this started called Quiz/Trivia I forgot where it is but you can search for it.

Nóm

It is in the Hall Of Fire section, but it is not strictly The Lord of the Rings. In that trivia thread questions about ANY of Tolkien's book are asked.
Even from HoME...which I havent read:D

Ship, and Silver swan...

Who was named Lathspell?

Gandalf, by Gríma Wormtongue.

Um, excuse me.. But isn't this new thread a bit pointless? I mean I think it's an excellent idea, and I'm glad people are so wiling to participate.. But I see no real point in creating a twin of the thread in the HoF.. But check it out, it's a great place! :)

so apparently some one has done it!

Certainly! There are over thirty pages worth of trivia here (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=144679#post144679).

This isn't the same as the hall of fire trivia, this one is better suited to newer readers.

I would actually encourage that this thread be allowed to continue. The Trivia Thread in HoF is all-inclusive Tolkien and some newbies to the works are confounded when questions pertaining to the Sil, UT and HoMe are asked. This thread's name sufficiently differentiates it from that thread and only questions pertianing to the LotR should be allowed.

That way, even beginnners only have to go to their three trusty volumes and can find answers too. :)

An easy one.... Who was the fifth conspirator in the gang who helped Frodo escape from the Shire? (aka not Merry, Pippin, Sam or Frodo).

Anamatar IV
08-27-2002, 07:25 PM
OMG i actually no it! Fatty bolger or fatty lumpkin one of the fattys

Fatty Bolger.

Ok, What is the name of Glorfindel's horse?

What did King Aragorn do to the slaves of Mordor?

Lantarion
08-29-2002, 06:37 PM
He set them free, so to speak.

Alright, I realize now that this would be a great place for "newbies" or just people who find the Q's in the HoF too difficult to test their skills in Tolkien-lore. Sorry everybody; the thread will continue as normal. :)
Oh, and another thing: I would be grateful if this thread was kept as expert-free as possible; so mods and know-it-alls should steer clear of this site and head for the HoF. :) If that's all ok and understood, let the asking commence!

Goldberry344

but its your turn now! oh well.....

How old was frodo when bilbo had his party? (ya, i know its an easy one)

Windfola
08-29-2002, 09:51 PM
Greetings from somewhere in ME!

Yep, that's an easy one, but it gives me a chance to jump in and say "hi" to everyone...after which I will add my own trivia question.

The answer is 33. Frodo was "coming of age" at the time (boy--don't I wish 33 was OUR "coming of age" birthday!).

Now, for my TQ: What was the name of the Orc, slain by Shagrat (for being insubordinate) in the Tower of Cirith Ungol?

Have fun, one & all (I know I am!) :D

Sarah
09-01-2002, 11:55 PM
This would be tough, so if no one gets it i'll ask something different.

In the original, unpublished draft of "The Hobbit" how does Smaug die?

Nóm
09-02-2002, 12:41 AM
I do not know the answer to that question, but it is interesting and I will look it up. Just wanted to point out that this is LOTR trivia and the idea is that this can be the place for people who've not read HoME, UT, and so on... personal I dont mind an occassion question that requires some heavy or light reseach but The trivia in the hall of fire may be a better place for such questions. Unless that is, the Smaug answer is told in the LOTR appendix, and I have forgot?

Sarah
09-02-2002, 12:54 AM
Oh allright. The answer was that Smaug was killed by Bilbo with Sting (same as in the play The Hobbit) ok new question:

After Bilbo "disappeared" the 2nd time, he became a character in hobbit campfire ghost stories. What was his name?

NEXT QUESTION!!:D

Windfola
09-03-2002, 02:50 AM
Hey, Sarah...

Is that question a bit of trivia from tLotR or is it from "The Hobbit"? I don't recall anything in tLotR that talks about Bilbo becoming a character in Hobbit campfire ghost stories.

In tLotR, he was referred to as "Mad Baggins," by many Shire folk who didn't understand him or his desire to travel outside the borders of the Shire and hang out with "queer folk" like Dwarves and Elves, and (of course) Wizards.

But I'm not sure if that's the answer you're seeking.

Windfola
09-03-2002, 02:54 AM
While we're awaiting the resolution of Sarah's question, here's another for all of you to ponder:

Who said, "And I would not have it said of me in song only that I was always left behind."

Goldberry344
09-03-2002, 04:10 AM
I'm pretty sure it was merry, but it may have been pippin....those two confuse me....

Sarah
09-03-2002, 05:15 AM
yes, Windfola got it, and it was in The Fellowship.

Windfola
09-03-2002, 12:56 PM
Thanks, Sarah, for clearing that one up. I couldn't remember talk of Hobbit campfire ghost stories, but I do recall mention that BB became legendary as "Mad Baggins," for the reasons I specified.

Goldberry: It was Merry, talking to King Theoden in "The Muster of Rohan." :)

Next question:

What was the name given to Eomer's sword?

Grond
09-03-2002, 07:05 PM
'_______!' cried Eomer. '______ for the Mark!'
'Anduril!' cried Aragorn. 'Anduril for the Dunedain!'
"Barak Khazad, Khazad-a-menu!"
A hint for people as to where they might find the answer. (Since I"m banned from participating by the artist formerly known as Pontifex ;) )

Windfola
09-04-2002, 03:19 AM

Here's another question:

The entrance to the land of the Enemy in tLotR was named--?

Nóm
09-04-2002, 03:28 AM
I think everybody should be allowed to take part in this thread!...So what if they know everything from the HoME as well? The questions here have answers found in The Lord of The Rings, so no HoME questions may be asked.wether or not someone has read HoME or anything other than LOTR is irrelevant....and while it is true that some people may know the answer to every question asked without having to look anything up, so what? As long as they don't hog the thread. I am sure Grond would not Hog it!

But that all probably does not matter since no one with super-knowledge is complaining. It is just my opinion.

Windfola
09-04-2002, 03:29 AM
Wow! Eliot posted questions at the same time I did!!! (oops!)

So I'll try to answer his others:

1) The thirteen Dwarves in The Hobbit (although this is supposed to be a thread of LotR trivia, Eliot :D ) are:

Dori
Nori
Ori
Oin
Gloin
Bifur
Bofur
Bomber
Dwalin
Balin
Fili
Kili
Thorin Oakenshield

2) The Balrog in Moria was named Guido (Well, so 13 out of 14 isn't bad)
:o

3) Who's forces would I rather fight with: Sauron's or Melkor's?
Neither. But I would have liked a chance to fight with the Good Guys, whipping their sorry butts! :D

Hint 2) The thing was given once by the hobbit, but it was a second giving that was resfused

No. They may have asked for something from Bilbo though. The key here is that this Hobbit claimed to be flattered when he was asked for this thing.
This is it, this is getting a tad frustrating....hehehe even Lantarion steps in and misses.

Ariana Undomiel
09-19-2002, 06:07 AM
No, those are good guesses but not the ultimate answer. The answer is Eomir. Gimli had a life and death wager with Eomir over the beauty of the Lady Galadriel. However they called a truce when Eomir begged leave over the excuse that he found the Queen Arwen to be the more beautiful of the two elves.

Another question.

9 people touched the ring.

1 Sauron WORE
2 Isildur
3 Deagol
4 Smeagol WORE
5 Bilbo WORE
6 Frodo WORE
7 Gandalf
8 Sam WORE
9 Bombadil

Bombadil wore the ring. the great mystery of him is that he doesnt dissapear when he puts it on. im not sure about isildur.
Boromir only held it in the movie.

should i as one now?

gate7ole
09-20-2002, 02:17 AM
The answer I was looking for was the persons who wore it, not touched it. And the trick was to have Bombadil in the answer which also includes the 4 hobbits and Sauron. And there is no doubt that Bombadil wore the Ring. It just didn't work on him. He even made it disappear after taking it off his finger.
There is another person who wore the ring, though it is not mentioned in Lotr. It's Isildur who after taking the Ring, he used it at least once (at the Gladden Fields, where he was killed).
So we have a definite number of 7 people using it (and none is elf).

Then Tom put the Ring round the end of his little finger and held it up to the candlelight. For a moment the hobbits noticed nothing strange about this. Then they gasped. There was no sign of Tom disappearing!

If that isn't mentioned in LOTR (I can't remember) then it doesn't belong in this thread. Not to be mean, but the trivia in the hall of fire is where ANY Tolkien questions may be asked.
