06-11-2003, 09:16 PM
Beregond; Denethor was the twenty-ninth.

I believe that Iluisa Olórin is correct.

Elendil, the question was asking for the 23rd Steward, not the 23rd Ruling Steward.
Pelendur, Vorondil and Mardil Voronwė were non-ruling Stewards.

I'm just thinking though; there would have been Stewards before Pelendur. Although they would have been elected, rather then being hereditary.
So this question is quite unanswerable.
But in terms of what Tolkien wrote, Iluisa would be correct.

Eliot
06-12-2003, 04:13 PM
Sorry Iluisa, I got the Stewards mixed up.

Lasgalen
06-12-2003, 08:58 PM
That steward vs ruling steward thing is so confusing. I thought it was Turin II also.

Beleg
06-12-2003, 09:07 PM
The Question posted by Eliot is puzzling. He is asking for the 23'rd Steward of Gondor and the list that Illusia provided only cites the names of the known stewards while we have no reason to think that there were no stewards before Pelendur.

Iluisa Olórin

hehe, hmmm, how many men did The prince of Dol Amroth bring with him?

Luthien Tunivel
06-12-2003, 10:23 PM
Can I play?

BlackCaptain
06-12-2003, 10:29 PM
Sure! Just answer the question...

Uhm... I think it was 700, but that's just a general guess... You're looking for an exact answer right?

Luthien Tunivel
06-12-2003, 10:32 PM
I think it was three and a half thousand, but I'm not quite sure.

Niniel
06-13-2003, 08:46 AM
'And last and proudest, Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth, kinsman of the Lord, with gilded banners bearing his token of the Ship and the Silver Swan, and a company of knights in full harness riding grey horses; and behind him sevdn hundreds of men at arms...' So he has 700 men AND a company of knights; but later it says that he 'should find three and a half thousands,' for the march to the Black Gate, but I suppose these are not from his own men.

Celebthōl
06-13-2003, 11:09 AM
That will do i guess :) next person can go....

Niniel
06-13-2003, 05:09 PM
Well, BC and Luthien were both right in some way but since I'm here first I'll post a question:
What are the names of the days of the week in Quenya?
Not too hard I should think.

Flammifer
06-16-2003, 12:19 PM
Here's a question:

In RotK in the Last Debate, Gandalf desribes Sauron as but a

_______ or _________ ???

Flammifer
06-16-2003, 12:23 PM
Niniel:

Elenya, Anarya, Isliya, Alduya, Menelya and Valanya (Or Tarion). I must admit I had to look these up!

Niniel
06-16-2003, 06:27 PM

What word was used by Théoden for 'hobbit'?

No, I mean in the Rohirric language.

Flammifer
06-17-2003, 10:48 AM
Question, Niniel:

Is the answer to your Hobbit-Rohan question in the Field of Cormallen chapter in RotK? Is it one of the languages in the "Praise them with great praise" thing?

Niniel
06-17-2003, 03:14 PM
No, it's in the appendices, almost at the end of the book.

Lantarion
06-17-2003, 03:16 PM
Niniel: the word Théoden used was Kud-dūkan.

Niniel
06-17-2003, 04:12 PM
Exactly, your turn.

Flammifer
06-19-2003, 11:23 AM
Well Lantarion doesn't seem to have a question so I'll offer one:

Who said this:

"The Dark Lord has Nine. But we have One, mightier than they: The White Rider."

Celebthōl

Lasgalen
07-12-2003, 03:41 AM
Does it say in The Lord of the Rings anywhere what the names Tolkien originally proposed were?

Elendil3119
07-12-2003, 03:54 AM
No, it doesn't. But since the question is related to LotR, I figured it'd be ok. Guess I was wrong...;) The answer is:

1: The Return of the Shadow
2: The Shadow Lengthens
3: The Return of the King

From Letter 139. Anyone else can ask a question...I can't think of one right now.

Flammifer
07-13-2003, 03:01 AM
I got a question -

What was Saruman's nickname? Who was it derived from and what language? What did it mean? (roughly)

Lasgalen
07-13-2003, 09:45 AM
Nickname was Sharkey. Derived from Orcish word Sharku. It meant old man.

07-23-2003, 01:04 PM
It's a lot of question that you all asked here (I don't want to 'double' any of them... but I also don't have time to search through them all;)). So if my question was already asked... it would be easy to guess:D:D

Here it is:

'How did Elfhelm call the 'Wild Men of the Woods' during a conversation with Merry?'

Ghash is Orkish for fire, Gandalf reports that the Orcs of Moria were muttering it just before the confrontation with the Balrog.

To where did Gandalf say he would look if he could use the Palantir?

(I've specifically made this question vague so as not to give away too much about where to find it....though it is probably obvious anyway)

Though there is some confusion in the matter of who Tar-Calmacil's (the eighteenth ruler of Nśmenor) successor was, what does The Lord of the Rings list the King following Tar-Calmacil as?

(Um, I'm new so I hope it is okay for me to be posting here! :D)

"Gondor! Gondor!" cried Aragorn. "Would that I looked on you again in happier hour! Not yet does my road lie southward to your bright streams."

Anyway! Welcome elithraniel, it's perfectly fine for you to post in this thread! :)

Oh phooey. All you hippies and your Silmarillion questions.

Cant anyone ask an easy question that I know but its imposible for everyone else?

Oh, and just so I dont get in trouble, Im gonna have to guess Ar-Adunakhor

Yes, Im aware that Im wrong, but hey! Its better to have guessed and lost then to have never guessed before.

Flammifer
08-07-2003, 08:16 AM
Haha Anįrion..........we hippies don't ask Silmarillion questions in the LOTR section, don't worry bout that, but the answer I'm guessing would be in the Appendices of LOTR............I'm sure your time will come when there's a question that you know but no one else does!

What do the 'vulgar' call Athelas, and what do their economical counterparts call it?

Little gramatical triva thrown in there as well  :D

LOL BC :)

Umm if by economical counterparts you mean gardeners, then "kingsfoil" is its name, but I'm not aware that it had a 'vulgar' name, unless you mean that "kingsfoil" is the vulgar name and "asea aranion" is the name given to it by the 'economical counterparts'. . Or maybe you mean pipe-weed, which is called "westmansweed" by the 'vulgar'?

BlackCaptain
08-10-2003, 08:22 PM
It is called westmansweed by the Vulgar yes... Vulgar people are poor... What is the oposite of poor on the big Economical Triangle thing?

Noblety. What do the Noble and Vulgar call Athelas? We have Westmansweed already...

Flame of Udūn
08-11-2003, 08:09 AM
BlackCaptain, I couldn't really understand what you were saying, but Westmansweed (AKA Halflings' Leaf) is not the same thing as Athelas (AKA Kingsfoil or Asėa Aranion).

Flammifer
08-11-2003, 09:39 AM
It is called westmansweed by the Vulgar yes... Vulgar people are poor... What is the oposite of poor on the big Economical Triangle thing?

Yeah BC umm but like Flame of Udun said "Westmansweed" is pipe-weed/halfling's leaf, not Athelas, althought it would make sense for Athelas to be called "Westmansweed" because the Men of the West brought it from Numenor, Athelas doesn't really have a vulgar name, pipe-weed does.

The noble name for it is "Asėa Aranion", which I believe is in the Valinorean tongue.

BlackCaptain
08-11-2003, 05:07 PM
AGhhhhhhhh I've been on a loosing streak with terms lately... I thought they were still talking about Athelas when I skimmed through it. I guess they were talking about Shire-weed. I'm terribly mistaken...:o :o

How long did the Battle of the Peak last, and where was it fought? Give me the name of the mountain in Elvish and Dwarvish......

Ellena
08-29-2003, 06:13 PM
This does indeed mean *closed Door* in sind language.
It is an ornamental door which is gaurded and is the gateway in the sixth circle of Minas Tirith, facing Mount Mindiluin.
It led to the Hallows, which was the final resying place of Gondors great warriors, upon a high level area between the city and the cliffs above.

And in what book?

Arvedui
09-01-2003, 06:34 PM
Bilbo sang that in Rivendell, in the chapter The Ring goes South from the second book (The Fellowship goes South????) of The Lord of the Rings.

Then Treebeard said farewell to each of them in turn, and he bowed three times slowly and with great reverence to Celeborn and Galadriel. 'It is long, long since we met by stock or by stone, A vanimar, vanimįlion nostari!' he said. 'It is sad that we should meet only thus at the ending. For the world is changing: I feel it in the water, I feel it in the earth, and I smell it in the air. I do not think we shall meet again.'

Therefore, it was Treebeard who spoke those words.
And the occasion: When Frodo, Gandalf, Galadriel and co. were passing through Isengard; and splitting up on their different ways.

Flammifer
09-02-2003, 08:11 AM
Yeah I thought it was either Galadriel or erm "the Elf" whose name isn't mentioned, coz don't they say something like:

"Had we known that making rope delighted you, we would have taught you much" or something like that?

So isn't it just the Elves of Lorien? Or is it the particular Elf that I mentioned above?

Aulė

They turned out of the lane that ran between tall houses and the outer wall of the fourth circle, and they regained the main street climbing up to the Citadel.
I'd say the fourth circle then. Although it would be possible for it to be the high-end of the third.

Oh well I guess I'm up and I haven't played before so this question may already have been asked but hey ho

What are the names of the three mountains that Moria lies beneath?

Eliot

Celebdil (Silvertine), Caradhras (Redhorn), and Fanuidhol (Cloudyhead).

Next to what river was Framsburg located?

Aulė
09-06-2003, 09:27 AM
Although it can't be found in LotR (and therefore inelligble), I am guessing that it was a city built by King Fram somewhere near the sources of the Anduin River.
I read somewhere that it was the River Greylin.

Gary Gamgee
09-06-2003, 12:29 PM
It was on the Anduin.

Oh and yes those where right Eliot.:D

Flammifer
09-06-2003, 02:19 PM
In that case, you're up Gary!

Next to what river was Framsburg located?

As Aulė said, Framsburg isn't actually in LOTR, so the question would be void, but meh it's your first time so that's OK! (Personally I don't have any idea what the Framsburg is anyway! :D)

Gary Gamgee

Who was reported to have seen Treemen in the old forest?

It was Halfast, son of Halfred of Overhill :)

He didn't see Treemen in the Old Forest. He saw them in Northfarthing when he was hunting. We never get a reference to a specific person telling tales about seeing things in the Old Forest.

Um, no. This isn't my first time in this thread. Just got a little carried away, that's all. I wasn't thinking "LOTR" trivia. I was thinking "Middle–earth" trivia. :) I was on this thread months before you got here, I just didn't post here for months also. ;) :D

According to my atlas, Framsburg was closer to the River Langwell, instead of Greylin. But, I'll let it pass...

Who was assigned to take care of the younger uncle of Halfast, after the Scouring of the Shire?

Aulė

Well the younger uncle would be Andwise Roper (the elder being the Gaffer).
Now...I cant recall him being mentioned in the Scouring...

Flammifer
09-07-2003, 01:57 PM
Argh damn it! Stop confusing me with your deliberate vagueness! Hmm......are we talking Gaffer Hamgee here? In that case, I'll say that this is a trick question, as he went back to live in the same house after the Scouring, and I don't believe that anyone else was living there with him.

Inderjit S
09-07-2003, 07:19 PM
Andy was born in S.R 1323, Hamfast 3 years later. It is not a 'trick' question at all.

TTT: The Taming of Sméagol
`A pity I didn't think of bringing another length,' said Frodo; `but I left the Company in such a hurry and confusion. If only we had enough we could use it to get down. How long is your rope, I wonder?'
Sam paid it out slowly, measuring it with his arms: 'Five, ten, twenty, thirty ells, more or less,' he said.

30 ells. (About 112 feet long).

Anįrion

Well, I get most of my information from Encylopedia of Arda, Im not exactly sure if your getting your information out of the books or what... but try looking up EoA and you might find the answer I did...

FoolOfATook
09-20-2003, 06:04 AM
Hoom.... interesting. The EoA has the dates as being Third Age 2790-2799- they use the slaying of Thror as their date for the begining of the war, which makes sense, but...

In The Tale of the Years, in Appendix B of LOTR, Tolkien writes:

2793 The War of the Dwarves and Orcs begins.

Which would seem to outrule the EoA, although the EoA is kind enough to let Tolkien's date for the end of the conflict to stand.

Anįrion
09-20-2003, 08:33 AM
Hmm...well, I think I read somewhere that after Thror was slain the Dwarves mustered all their forces and THEN attacked, so maybe thats when Tolkien said that the war began, but maybe in the Dwarves minds when Thror was dead, they declared war, whether the goblins/orcs knew it or not.

Either way, your correct. You can state a question when you please.
