Starflower

he doesn't say who wrote the entire book , but :
. ......Wait Here is something : a large bold hand using an Elvish script.
That would be Ori's hand, said Gimli. .

Isengrim II 10th Thain (1020-1122)
Isumbras III 11th Thain (1066-1159)
Ferumbras II 12th Thain (1101-1201)

What and where is Rhosgobel?
Flammifer
09-30-2003, 11:50 AM
Rhosgobel is a place, I believe it's near the eaves of Mirkwood, somewhere around the dwelling of Beorn? Radagast the Brown of the Istari lived there for a while........but is that from the LOTR? I don't remember it being mentioned in LOTR, only in the Hobbit.
Starflower
09-30-2003, 12:01 PM
it is mentioned in two places in LoTR, in "Council of Elrond" and "the Ring Goes South"
but it does also appear in the Hobbit, you're right
Flammifer
09-30-2003, 12:16 PM

Inderjit S
09-30-2003, 04:17 PM
Chris. Tolkien. Tolkien wasn't much good at drawing maps whilst Chris was good at it. Someone called Stephen Raw re-drew them.
Yes, Stephen Raw was the answer I was looking for.

Eliot
10-01-2003, 02:13 AM
Well, if Inderjit wants the answer to be more specific, Sam would stand up first, put his hands behind his back, and start reciting. :)
Flammifer
10-01-2003, 02:57 AM
Inder..........is that right? Who's gonna ask the next question? BC or Eliot?
BlackCaptain
10-01-2003, 04:56 AM
Oh well I thought that was a given... He strides back and forth, with his arms behind his back, one hand grasping the other wrist.

Was it Minas Tirith?
Flammifer
10-10-2003, 05:12 AM
what was the password Sam gave Frodo to identify himself in the Tower of Cirith Ungol ?
I am assuming with this question you mean when Frodo is in the topmost chamber in the Tower of Cirith Ungol, and Sam goes down the ladder to get some orc-gear for Frodo. He tells Frodo to pull up the ladder so no one can get in there...........
'There's something that might be useful,' he said. 'He's dead: the one that whipped you. Broke his neck, it seems, in his hurry. Now you draw up the ladder, if you can, Mr. Frodo; and don't you let it down till you hear me call the pass-word. Elbereth I'll call. What the Elves say. No orc would say that.'
---- Sam - LotR, RotK, "The Tower of Cirith Ungol"
Is this what you mean? The password was just 'Elbereth', my answer.
Starflower
10-10-2003, 10:08 AM
oh dear... you ARE right Flammifer ... my memory failed me, I was sure it was the phrase itself that was required...
:( my bad , i'm sorry

Starflower
10-17-2003, 09:08 AM

go ahead Flam
Flammifer
10-19-2003, 03:07 AM
Oh ok cool! :D

Ach! This is very difficult, coz I can't be bothered to count, really. But do we count friends that he makes during the book, or just the ones at the start (in the Shire)?
Define 'friend'.
One could say that every person Frodo met in the book was his friend...
Merry, Pippin, Sam, Fatty, Gandalf, Aragorn, Bilbo, etc.

I don't know much about Lorien, but does this have something to do with the trees? Can this even be found in LotR, Starflower?
Rhiannon
10-22-2003, 02:33 AM
They were called the Galadrim, or 'Tree people', because they lived in the trees.
Starflower
10-22-2003, 08:12 AM
yes it is definitely in the story itself, and the question was why, according to legend were they called Galadhrim.... so not just because they lived in the trees. I'm going to be really tough on this one now :D :D :D
baragund
10-23-2003, 04:44 AM
Galadhrim is Sindarin for "people of the trees". As Rhiannon said, they lived in the trees and the reason for this was there was no other building materials handy for constructing homes. Normally they would have built their homes of stone or lived in caverns, especially with the Noldorin influence of Galadriel but neither was available in Lorien. To get stone, they would have to quarry it from the Misty Mountains and try to transport it to Lorien via the Silverlode, a major pain in the butt!
Is that what you're looking for?
Starflower
10-23-2003, 10:25 AM
no... let me rephrase this. There is a story, a legend the Elves of Lorien tell as to why they started to live up in the trees, and became called Galadhrim. Which legen is this ?
baragund
10-23-2003, 06:39 PM
Are you referring to the tree house Nimrodel built near the falls that bear her name? This would have happened before she was separated from Amroth, as described in the following passage from "Lothlorien" in FOTR:
'It is told that she had a house built in the branches of a tree that grew near the falls; for that was the custom of the Elves of Lórien, to dwell in the trees, and maybe it is so still. Therefore they were called the Galadhrim, the Tree-people. Deep in their forest the trees are very great. The people of the woods did not delve in the ground like Dwarves, nor build strong places of stone before the Shadow came.'
On a different topic, Starflower, a while ago you suggested checking out the "Forgotten Realms" series of books if I wanted to learn more about Dark Elves. Well, I was in a Borders bookstore with the family the other day and I wandered over to the fantasy section to see what they were all about. Imagine my surprise when I found what had to have been at least 30 titles by about a half dozen authors!
Any suggestions on a particular title or author as a starting point?

How did the Palantirs in Osgiliath and Elostirion differ from the other five ?
Starbrow
10-30-2003, 05:22 AM
The palantir at Osgiliath was the chief stone that could connect to all the others. The palantir at Elostirion looked with "straight sight" to where Numenor was.

How did Gandalf get an palantir?
Flammifer
10-31-2003, 10:56 AM
Well, unless I am missing something really obvious, here's the answer:
After the parley with Saruman Wormtongue hurled a crystal-like ball that fell down the Stairs of Orthanc, and Pippin saved it from rolling into the the defiled waters surrounding the tower. Gandalf took it from him almost straight away...thus he gained what was later discovered to be one of the palantiri.
Is that OK?
Starbrow
11-01-2003, 05:09 AM
Exactly what I was looking for.
Your turn to ask a question.

Hurrah! :)
Alrighty........time for a hard one......OK:
How many times is Manwe mentioned in The Lord of the Rings (hint: it may not be by the name "Manwe"), and at which points in the book?
Starflower
11-02-2003, 01:06 PM
I can only find two places, where he is mentioned singly, not just 'valar' .
1) in Rivendell when they sing the Lay of Earendil, there is a mention of "the Elder King in Ilarin on mountain sheer"
2) in the appendix, in reference how Ar-Adunakhor took a name that belonged only to the Elder King in the far West.

The name given to Gondor by the riders of Rohan was what.
Starflower
11-04-2003, 10:37 AM
hang on meneldur, your answer is not what i was looking for...Gandalf does not tell Pippin it is 600 miles from Orthanc to Barad-dr....
It is 200 leagues.
200 leagues = 600 miles
Therefore meneldor was correct.
meneldor
11-04-2003, 06:45 PM
The name given to Gondor by the riders of Rohan was?
Rhiannon
11-04-2003, 07:01 PM
All I found was that they call them 'grave'- 'the grave men of Gondor'.
Eriol
11-04-2003, 07:27 PM
My guess would be Mundburg. Strictly speaking, that is the name the Rohirrim gave to Minas Tirith, not to Gondor; but Minas Tirith is called "the City of Gondor", and someone of Rohan (Théoden?) makes a reference about how life used to be "tilling the fields and watching the herds and occasionally going to the wars of Mundburg"...
So I suppose it could be said that the Rohirrim called Gondor Mundburg, by ellipse.
meneldor
11-04-2003, 07:51 PM
Mundburg is Minas Tirith but they refer to Gondor as another name.
