Yeah, Orlando Bloom did an awesome job portraying Legolas -who just ruled the movie with his bowmanship skills and (I hate to admit I don't know what they were) his other weapons that looked like they might have been daggers or very short swords. If you know, let me know because I'm a weapons buff but the action was so fast I didn't really get a glimpse of the weapons he had sheathed on his back.
There is a lot more to Legolas' character than his hot looks guys, so no, he's not just eye candy.
Isn't it nice though to finally have a movie that has a lot of eye candy for the women?
Can't wait to see the next two movies.
Does anyone have the soundtrack yet? I love the stuff by Enya that I recognized in the movie but how's the rest of the CD?

He used Elven daggers, which are long, thin, and very sharp. I wish I had a pair of those. But I like the big black bow Lurtz used, that thing shot 1/2 inch thick arrows! It mustve hurt.

I always really liked Legolas in the books and i must say Bloom put down a great Legolas as far as looks concerned, hopefully we'll see his character more developed in the two towers and see some of Blooms acting quality.
Im new btw :D
Happy newyear everyone!

I want to see Bloom (Legolas) sing!
In a lot of the scenes with Legolas in them I saw something black on his forearm, does anyone know what that was?
aragil
01-02-2002, 01:51 AM
If it was on the thumb-side of his forearm then it was probably the guard used by archers to protect their arms from the fletching on the arrows. Was it in the hand that held the bow, or the hand which drew it?

Yeah--this movie sure had alot of eye candy for us :D I want to see Legolas sing too! He sings alot in the movies and would be great on-screen! I loved his elven quiver thing and those arrows. It was so detailed and neat looking!
I love the soundtrack too, Arrianna! I like #2 and #17!
Welcome to the forum Yuber! Its nice to have you here :D

On behalf of a friend who is not a member of this forum, her view is that Legolas was way too pale, dull and decidely un-droolworthy. For her, Aragorn was well out in front in the "I want to have your baby" stakes. Personally, I'm waiting for Miranda Otto in TTT..........

Thanks for the info. Sorry but I'm new to this forum stuff and now I can't see the user name for the person who provided the info on Legolas' additional weapons. Speaking of weapons, the opening scene of the first war was the best I've scene between the elven archers and the warriors using what looked like a cross between scyths (spelling?) and spears and the quick swoosh and splice movement to take down the enemy - and in sync too!

Hey now...you can tell your friend that Legolas wasn't supposed to be a tan beach bum or anything! Of course he was pale-ish!! And in his case, pale is good.... :D

Yeah Legolas is DEFINITELY cute. I thought of him as more beautiful though...b/c he's an elf and all...But Orlando Bloom is cute without the blonde wig also..
What really impressed me was that he did a GREAT job with his role...and he was still in school when he auditioned. That's amazing.

I don't know a thing about Bloom, but I've got to say he must be brilliant if he can act such a great character and make him look real.
And his archery!!?

I think Orlando Bloom did a great job portraying Legolas the Elf.
Infact he is probably my favourite character from the movie.
FrodetteBaggins

Legolas has other skills apart from the archery. He has the preternatural ability to move more lightly across the ground than any other creature in Middle-earth. He is able to run swiftly and effortlessly across the roughest terrain, barely leaving footprints.
The knives that have been mentioned are Elf-knives: long white knives with filigreed blades. They are deadly weapons for the Elvs make the keenest blades in all Middle-earth.
And the Elvs are generous. When the nine visited Lothlorien, Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn gave them special gifts and Legolas was given a longbow and an exquisitly-tooled quiver of arrows. Good fun being an Elf!
Oh yeah and Orlando Bloom rulz!! He's so fine! And he did a good job in the acting, as he was only at school. Did you know that he originally went for the part of Boromir's brother? Amazing.

Into Shadow
Into Shadow
His light shall overcome
Legolas of Mirkwood
Son of an Elven King
Who follows the path
Deep Into darkness
His beauty is beyond
The realm of mortal men
The Lord of Mirkwood
Beauty personified
The light of his being
Overcomes the shadows
Into darkness he wonders
And one by one they fall..
Into Shadow
Into Shadow
His light shall overcome
Swift as the wind
He moves without sound
His enemies await
In the Land of Shadows
Legolas the Beautiful
A Prince among Men
Legolas of Mirkwood
Bringer of the Light
The Dark Lord has faltered
His time has past
Into darkness you wonder
And one by one they fall..
Into Shadow
Into Shadow
His light will overcome

Oh dear, oh dear.
Wide Boy pauses to admire well written verses, but shakes his head with dismay at the subject matter......... Sadly, he turns away and shuffles off despondently to his little cave, at last realising that understanding the ways of humanity is quite beyond him. He bows his head and as a solitary tear trickles down his cheek he wonders whether he can ever again bear the pain of the company of his fellows. But....perhaps, deep down, in his heart of hearts, Wide Boy wishes that he could be like Legolas.......????

Would you have preferred I wrote "I love Legolas?"..
Nay....

Define "Love".
Wide Boy
01-04-2002, 05:06 AM
I really did like the verses, it's just that I don't suffer from Legolamania. (wrong orientation, and besides, I prefer brunettes)
Define love? That would be even harder than getting a consensus view of the movie out of this forum. I'm willing to have a crack at the inhumanly difficult but I can't come at the totally impossible.
Wide Boy
01-04-2002, 05:35 AM
I stand aghast! You mean something like "The Ballad of Eskimo Arwen"? Wash your mouth out with soap. Besides, Arwen doesn't rhyme with much except Darwin so it's a bit tricky. I mean, "Arwen the Darwin lay dying..etc etc" doesn't really work.
Furthermore, I warn you in advance that if you dare to make such a disgusting, impertinent suggestion about Eowyn (Miranda Otto) I will personally drown your goldfish and paint rude words on your front door.
Anyway, I fear we are lowering the tone of the discourse on the "I drool for Legolas" thread. In deference to Xenith and those others of more refined sensibilities, send me a stamped, self-addressed plain brown envelope, together with a signed waiver and I'll send you some URLs for a more appropriate forum for this topic.

LOL... :)
Ahhh tis all good, each to his own as I always say.
As Harad requested, a drinking song for Arwen:
O' Arwen of Rivendell
The might of the Nazgul
This Elf did quell..
She called upon a River
To sweeten the Nazgul's bitter
And naught was ever the same
To Rivendell To Rivendell
The Elf did ride
And along came beside her
An Evil Black Rider
'Oh why must I be here?' she sighed
It really should have been Strider..
Behold young Frodo!
In the arms of the Elf
Knocking at Death's door
'Drink this down' she said
And it all but went to his head
Poor Frodo was not well
Yet another tale to tell..
And so the story goes
Where it ends, nobody knows
Old Frodo he did recover
And Elrond was all but a flutter
As for Arwen, well we say
She all but upped and ran away
With that mortal Aragorn
And yet another tale was born
Hehe :D
There you go!

As I watched the movie, I kept thinking that Legolas' character was very similar to Uncas in the Daniel Day-Lewis movie version of Last of the Mohicans. Both Legolas and Uncas have peaceful, secure, aware, well-balanced personalities. They share an excellence in weapons and woodcraft. Both are passionate, loyal, honorable, and fighting for a cause that appears to be doomed. I wanted to see more of Legolas' distinctives come out.. he seemed too much like an Uncas in another setting to me.
What do you think?

Yes, we are very aware that there are more pressing issues out there. But hey, they are not as fun and this way, we are getting people agreeing with us that Legolasmania (I believe somone said this is the hot, moist tingling women feel when looking at him) is running rampant through the ranks of women everywhere.
By the way, Legolas - and the other elves - do not have "girly" hair. You need to tell your friend to wake up and smell the coffee and that long hair on men (when kept nice) is a totally hot turn on.
By the way, did anyone note the cool elves with the long black hair? Too cool.

in the LOTR movie "the fellowship of the ring" i noticed that legolas had a semi-small part. well from what i have read in the book his part in that isn't very big either. but i have good news. in the book "the two towers" he has a bigger part so hopefully in the next movie he should have a bigger part. :D :D :D peace!!!

In a 'making of' documentary I saw recently, I saw Legolas Bloom (as I keep calling him in my mind) drawing his bow without an arrow in it. Did they edit the arrows in later? Is that regular practice? (I could imagine people getting hurt if there really was an arrow in there...) He still looked good though....

I didnīt actually think that Legolas was one of the better characters in the film. He spent too much time standing around looking sad and shocked. He was too much of a pretty boy, not much ageless elf in that. I didnīt think he was ****, but to me, most of the other characers corresponded better with the book (except for Elrond - that goes without saying).

Yes, I also think that Bloom did awesome job! Just one thing that bothers me - elves are immortal, the only sign of aging is their eyes(they are filled with knowledge...), but if you'll compare Matrix guy who plays Elrond and Bloom, the difference in age is quiet obvious...
Xenith
01-16-2002, 09:04 PM
Ever since I can remember Elves have been thought of as 'Fair, beautiful, intelligent, elegant, ethereal beings'. This description seems to have been consistent in everything I have ever read/played from books to D&D games.
Does Orlando Bloom's Legolas portray Elves this way in the movie? Yes I believe so. If we look at Galadriel Queen of the Elves it is evident that PJ has tried to convey Elves to be definitely something special. Even in the book/books Tolkien has portrayed Elves in the same light, a wonder to behold.
So if Elves werent meant to look 'pretty' then I guess all of the authors and creators of RPG/Fantasy games and books have been wrong all along :)
I would also like to add that during some of the fight/action scenes in the movie, Legolas showed strength, speed and agility very much befitting an Elf. Standing beside Aragorn and Boromir, he seemed to balance things out quite nicely. So I guess Legolas was intended to be more than just a 'pretty elf-boy' after all.

I thought Elrond (the 'Matrix Guy', Hugo Weaving. Yum...) was beautiful and wise-looking.
Plus, Legolas is not even 3000 years old, and Elrond is much, much older, right? Maybe Elrond carries a sort of 'age' because he was there when the whole mess started.
I am so glad that Peter Jackson had the foresight to cast real beauty, not Cosmo-cover beauty. Yeah, Tom Cruise as Elrond, Brad Pitt as Legolas. Not.
I thought every actor playing an Elf showed remarkable beauty and grace.
For as young as he is, O.B. had that wisdom-thing going on...
Three cheers for the Casting of the Elves!!!!!

I thought some of the elves were a bit androgenous though - esp Haldir. You can go too far towards pretty!
Lindir
01-17-2002, 01:59 PM
Yes, I agree about Haldir. Way too effeminate. And almost all the elves at the Council looked the same, that was a bit unimaginative.
But of course it must be hard to find actors that actually look loke elves. And everbody has a different conception of how they look anyway.
Xenith
01-17-2002, 08:24 PM
The difference between 'Pretty' and 'Beautiful' lies only in how they are preceived.

blech...I can't imagine how horrible the movie would be if Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt were elves.....Although I could see Tom as an Elf....in the background...not as Elrond for sure....
I was kind of iffy about having the guy from the Matrix as Elrond...but I supposed he did a good job as for portraying his character.
I was anticipating the singing to occur! maybe in the other movies?
Orlando Bloom is VERY cute, and he did a great job with being Legolas' character....But Legolas was always my fav. character before I saw the movie. Heh....orlando made me like the character even MORE.
those are my ramblings.

I have one last thing to say about Legolas. I think that in this first film he is still somewhat anonymous. I agree that he is an awsome warrior, but we see too little of it. But after seeing the movie again for the third time tonight Iīm thinking that he will be much better in the next film and that I will like him better. He is one of my favourite carachters in the book, which is probably why Iīm a bit harsh on him.
And of course there is a difference between pretty and beautiful, itīs a matter of nuances. The elves donīt have ageless prettiness now, have they?
Tom Cruise should be kept from every film. Had they cast him in this one, I would have killed someone.

I agree with the assessment that Elrond looked more aged than the other elves because of his involvement in the first war. I mean, when you see him remembering how he tried to get the ring destroyed, he looks younger and more invigorated, etc. Then when the scene returns to him 3,000 years later. He's more matured and looks like he's born a great weight over the last 3,000 years.
Not that I hate Tom Cruise, but I believe heads would have rolled had he been in LOTR.
Is anyone else anticipating the dialogue play between Legolas and the dwarf (sorry, name escapes me and I just read the second book). I thought that was hysterical reading because I was picturing the movie cast while reading it. But I don't want to give anything away. So if you haven't read the second book, read it and giggle away.

In the real Trilogy, Legolas only has one Elven knife, and it is kept on his belt. However, for the movie's sake I'm sure they wanted to "enhance" his fighting abilities. (Bilbo's/Frodo's knife 'Sting' was also Elvish) Did anyone else notice his infinite number of arrows? I know he picks some of his up sometimes, but still... Movie magic I guess :p Elves are by far my favorite peoples of Middle-earth, however I don't think they portrayed Gimli very fairly.

Why has no one said anything about Orlando Blooms accent? Can I say major turn on? I love a guy with an accent. And his face isn't hard on the eyes what more could a girl ask for?

Yes, I also thought that Gimli was little... hairy... I would say. I always knew that dwarves suppose to have beards, but I also understood that they were neatly combed, 'coz dwarves were little obsessed over their 'facial hair'. Gimli from the movie needs to visit nearest hair professional. :o

Lindir: I agree with you. They didn't really develop Legolas' character in this first film, and that really bothered me. I expected more, and I still expect more. they BETTER have developed his character within the next film :o
If people haven't read the books, then I don't think that they would have really noticed all of the cool abilities Legolas has, even though they were somewhat portrayed in the movie.

Hey Ariana,
I couldn't agree with you more! Orlando Bloom really looks swell, though I do believe Legolas should have brown hair. Why? Because he is one of the Moriquendi, and they all have dark hair. But somehow it doesn't really disturb me that he is blond in the movie.
Usually, I fall for blonde men but... don't Aragorn and Frodo look good? And, since Boromir is such a hunk, I can hardly wait for the next moment when Faramir will be introduced...
It is surely true, LOTR really fulfills our (women's) dreams!

Legolas, Aragorn,Frodo, Pippin and Merry are all cute *yum...*, Elrond is OK, Sams OK, Boromir... well, sometimes he looks all weedy and horrible, but when he's nearly crying about Frodo at the end with all the bits in his hair, thats his best side!!!! Frodo rocks... im suffering from withdrawal symptoms too, even though he's on my desktop + I drool over him in my picture file... Anyone got a good piccy of Pippin? I dont need Legolas, Ive got 11!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Old thread...
I think Legolas was the less important character of the Fellowship (In the LotR book). But Peter Jackson have created more detailed character in the movies. Legolas Greenleaf in a very important person in New Line Cinema LotR trilogy. But I think Orlando is a good actor and he played his role very well. I don`t like the moments when he is a hero, good guy.
