There has to be a The Hobbit film made, even if it's just for the fans of LOTR

I think that there would be loads of people going to see it, and that it would be done well.

You can just imagine Smaug as cgi, with all of the little dwarfs running around the place! And the Battle of Five Armies would be amazing!!!

Does any1 know whats holding PJ and his team up? Why aren't they making the hobbit into a film? Just think, everyone would be calling it TH, like ROTK etc.! Weird. :p

The Hobbit is going to be made, it will (sadly) be directed by PJ, but he's busy with King Kong right now so it won't be out for another few years.

Btw, welcome to the forum! :D

You're welcome! Look through some other Hobbit movie discussion threads, I've posted in quite a few.

I heard PJ would want to do The Hobbit, but a little problem with two companies having different right to the work is the problem and then there is King Kong.

The problem of making The Hobbit is that Ian Holm (Bilbo Baggins) is 60 years younger than he was in The Lord of the Rings. He filmed, in starting of the film, some parts of The Hobbit, but the actor said that it hurts. I don't think he'll do a long film with that...

I wouldn't expect that they'd use Ian Holmes is the main rold of the movie anyway. In Lord of the Rings, there wasn't just one main character- you had many (Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, Gandalf, etc), so there was no real need to get a 'big actor'. But in The Hobbit- the book is following only what Bilbo is doing, and the other characters revolve around him. I'd expect NLC to hunt down a well known actor as to use him as a drawcard for viewers. Or they'll expand on the storyline a bit (PJ has proved that he likes to do that ;) ), and have Bilbo, Gandalf (by adding the The White Council bit), Thorin (by adding some scenes from the Blue Mountains and have him as the Dwarf who gets 99% of the Dwarvish screentime) and Bard (by showing some of Esgaroth before Bilbo gets there, and make him appear extremely heroic) as the co-main characters.

For me, there hasn“t to be a Hobbit film  People is desperated, but what a lack of imagination, the want too The Hobbit is that thing called film...and after seeing LOTR!!!!!

LOTR was dissapioiting, they did what they wanted with the books, characters, no, I don“t want more movies.

LOTR was dissapioitingYou may think that- but the overwhelming majority of people liked it (as the stats from the cinemas and DVD sales show). Therefore it is safe to conclude that a lot of people would watch The Hobbit if it were made. NLC knows this- and as with all producing companies, if there's a profit to be made, they'll make the movie.

Rog, perhaps you are right. But I think it's good if they keep the same actors, or most of them. And Ian Holm is a very good actor, I think he'll be a perfect adventurer Bilbo Baggins. At least, Sir Ian McKellen accept doing Gandalf again in The Hobbit, and it's good. Gloin must be one of that dwarfs in the Concil of Elrond.
I think it'll be like that, if New Line and Peter Jackson accept doing this film.

McKellen as Gandalf, Weaving as Elrond, Blancett as Galadriel, Lee as Saruman (for the White Council) and Serkis as Gollum could all be reused. But Holmes is just too old. Bilbo is 50 years old in the book, and Hobbits have a longer lifespan than humans. A 40 year old actor would be the best portrayal. But Frodo was 50 in LotR too, yet that didn't stop PJ casting a youthful actor (Wood was 18 when it started). I'd think the audience would react better to a youthful Hobbit anyway. What would you prefer? An old, ignorant Hobbit stumbling across Middle Earth? Or a young, innocent Hobbit seeking adventure? ;)

We've already seen Ian Holm as he would be in The Hobbit: in the introduction to FOTR when he finds the Ring.
Bilbo doesn't look too old there, and I don't see why Holm should find it all that difficult a job.
Elisha was too young for Frodo but it doesn't matter as he played him so well.
PJ doesn't have to stick to the story that Bilbo was the same age for his adventure; he rarely sticks to anything.

Bilbo shouldn't look "youthful" anyway, poor Holm isn't all that ancient, and makeup can do almost anything - but you may be right, that he's too old for the part!

But B.B. wasn't a "young, innocent Hobbit" nor was he "seeking adventure". The whole point of the story to a great extent was that he was "Dad" (the story teller) who was quite happy to sit home and smoke a pipe by the fire but who got "snookered" into going on an adventure. Of course, there was (very) buried in his character the adventurous nature from the Took side of his family, but he certainly looked and felt much more like his Baggins father. To make B.B. into a "young, adventurous" Hobbit would be a betrayal of the real meaning of the story, the same meaning that there was in LOTR: that is, ordinary people often in the face of necessity, perform extraordinary deeds. Of course, given that that meaning was lost in the LOTR films, I wouldn't at all be surprised if Jackson goes along with your suggestion and casts a Wood-type actor for Bilbo.

As for Holm being too old: I don't know. Most kids would think someone of 50 was "ancient" anyway, so his looks wouldn't be too much of a problem given the wonders that can be accomplished with some tape and makeup. However, even if they go with someone else, I certainly hope it isn't either a mature "leading man" or, even worse, a "young hunk". B.B. has to be a rather ordinary everyday fellow whom no one would suspect of being capable of extraordinary things. If they don't follow that formula, it's not going to be the same story even if they manage to stick with the book as far as plot is concerned.

How was the meaning of LotR lost in the movies exactly? To me it was exactly the story that of ordinary folk, the Hobbits, triumphing over unlikely odds.

As for the Hobbit, from what I've heard, casting isn't due to begin until next summer the earliest, should they decide to try and find a new actor to play Bilbo.

In The Hobbit, Bilbo is less that half that he was in LotR- but I did just remember something. The One Ring prevented him from aging! I can vaguely recall Gandalf saying "...you haven't aged a day..." (not sure if that was in the book, or just a PJ-extra). In that case, if the make-up people can make Sir Ian Holm look the same as he was in the LotR, then it would make sence to use him. But, would Holm be up for barrel-riding and sprints through caves? Bilbo certainly wasn't athletic- but he was able to move about swiftly and quietly if required. Holm is aged 73 now, and will be in his late 70s by the time The Hobbit gets filming?
A bit of a stretch? Yeah, I'd have to say so.

Who would be best for the part though? Size would not really matter, with all that technology- so it would be down to talent and facial looks. I daresay that PJ wont be going for a "slim-Hobbit" look again like he did with Frodo, Merry and Pippin. Hopefully he'll go for a more chubby appearance like with Sam and Odo. It's a shame that Sean Astin can't play the part- but that would just be too awkward. For the non-book readers, they'll forever be asked "Why is Sam there?".
I doubt they'll get a $10m star to play the part, but I reckon they'd go for someone who is known by many.
Robin Williams, anyone? ;)

Now nobody laugh, but I was thinking of compiling and sending a package promoting myself to PJ and Wignut films. I've practiced imitations for years now and I can learn an accent in a matter of weeks, I also imho would look like the part should they go for the real look of bilbo, and well...I can act. I've done so much over the years that I'm beginning to get a hang of it...and I'd work for cheap you know :p

I think you should do that, Ol'Gaffer. Elijah Wood did pretty much the same thing, and it worked for him.

Well, I would certainly like to see how the "Hobbit" movie comes out, I would love to see the places and scenes and characters. Just to see someone else's vision of this and compare that to mine. But I always think of "Hobbit" differently than of LOTR. It's like I look everything through yellow glasses - it's all lighter and less serious somehow. And for that reason the movie might seem a little wrong for me. But I'm still looking forward to seeing it. :D
