For everyone interested, the new debate will eventually start after the holidays, since many of us may want to pass their time with their families.
But the invitation still holds and everyone who wants to participate should post here. Soon after the New Year's Day, the debate will start.

I'm sorry I didn't appear oftener in the Guild, but I didn't even have the time to take a look at the forum itself. So, please excuse my absence. I am sure I will come here everyday after New Year when I should learn for my exams. It's a bad thing hanging around here when I should learn but that's me.
I hope I'm not too late or did miss too much.
BTW: Lhun: I'm sure with you we have a great deputy Guild Master. You are definitely one of those who contribute most. Not quantitavely but qualitatively. Congrats to Gate7ole, too.
Gee, Hirila, thank you! :D
This coming from an expert!!!!!
I was wondering where you have been lately!
It would be great to have you in a debate or and any other activity!

I should certainly like to be considered as a possible debater if there is room. I have done a little debating but I'm sure not on the level that will take place here in the Guild. Indeed, it would be prudent of me to remain silently on the sidelines and see what my betters do.
Of course, I will let you know about my final involvement when the topic is decided. There are parts of Tolkien's writings with which I am only superficially familiar so if the topic is not that well known to me, I will step aside in favor of someone who will do it more justice.
Still, I'd like to let the moderators and judges know I am interested. :)

As I have been missing the presence of the Guild-Master, I e-mailed him.
Here is what he wanted me to tell you that he's very much busy and unfortunately his father is not well again.
He will be back in the Forum probably in January.
He also wished us all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Just in case my brain slips into "neutral" again, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my fellow Guild member (and everyone on the forum) a blessed Holiday Season - past and present - a most blessed Christmas and a healthy, prosperous and joyous New Year to all!
In this little corner of the universe, we are the priviledged witnesses to what mankind is supposed to do with the intellect God has given us: appreciate, discuss, debate and befriend.
God bless! :)

Soon there will be a system for assigning ranks within the Guild. Gate7ole and I are working on it and as soon as it is ready (sooner than you think ;) :p !) we will offer it to ALL of you - present, former and newest members:
> to the newcommers - in order to get a respective rank
> to the present members - in order to get a higher rank, if they wish
> to the former members - in case some of them decide to come back ;)

ATTENTION
From behalf of the Deputy Masters of the Guild, I announce the beginning of the PROBATION PERIOD. It will last a month (until the end of January).
During this probation period every guild member shall prove his/her willingness to seriously and productively contribute for the Guild's work. Replying to this post isn’t necessary. What is necessary is the participation in some of the activities of the guild. After the end of it, the members that didn’t show such a willingness will unfortunately lose their membership.
The reason for the probation period is to free some spots for new members who will be more eager to contribute. Besides, the inactive members probably won’t care about their removal. Most members are known to us and they won’t have any problem at all to show their active involvement. To the few that have not been heard for months, this is their chance to return.
This probation period (but much shorter) will be also used for every new applicant in the future.
Thank you for your attention.

I want to apologize to everyone in the guild for my continued absence. My father has been extremely ill and passed away early this morning of congestive heart failure. I will appreciate everyone's prayers and thoughts during this time of loss.
I've missed everyone and hope to soon be back in full participation. Special thanks to Gate and Lhun for taking charge in my absence. I wish all of you a happy new year and take solace in knowing that my father is now with my mother.
Peace to all.

My apologies, for my recent absence, I have not posted at all for several weeks I think, since I have been on holiday, however I am now back for about a week during which time I will be active, before going away again for another five days before the school term starts again for me. Just to let you all know that I haven't deserted you.
My sincerest condolances to you and your family Grond. You will all be in my prayers.

At the guild of the Scholars a discussion about the Book of Lost Tales (HOME I) is about to start. It will probably follow the form of the Silmarillion discussions (chapter by chapter).
Everyone is welcome.
I will personally participate since it will enhance my knowledge about these early "gems" written by the professor. I advise anyone who owns a copy of this book to participate too.

Boys, please, don't get gloomy!
We are but mortals! Noone can escape this fate!
I am so sorry from the bottom of my heart for your relatives!
My parents are still alive and thank goodness their health is for the moment all right.... But when I think about the years to come and that one day I will loose them.... It HURTS!!! It hurts so sharply!
That's why I ..... think I can understand your pain!
And I am so very much sorry that you had to "drink" this bitter "cup" of life!
Please, accept my deepest simpathy!
But let's not allow sorrow overcome us! We have to live on. One day we're going to leave this world too. I only wish I knew where do people's souls go after that!
Would it be silly to think that this energy, we call "soul", goes back to its origins.....wherever and whatever those might be?.....
Silly.... Perhaps....But it helps me overcome the pain that I feel when I hear of a good person that has left this world.... I'd like to think that the most important part of a person - his/her essence, goes on living.... somewhere....in some form.....
*************
Pohuist, it's strange but I have been just thinking of you and that I haven't "seen" you for a long time........And the next moment I saw your post! Amazing!
I am glad that you are back!

I have lost both my parents; my dad in 1986, my mom in 1993. This last September, I lost my only sibling, my sister who was four years older than I. Of course, at my age, these things are considered "natural", but it doesn't make it hurt any the less, especially during the Christmas season which was always a big family time for us.
As for going on, well that has been promised to us, hasn't it. Furthermore, I am rather of the opinion of Alfred Lunt, the male partner in the famous theatrical couple, Lunt and Fontaine. The two were appearing in a play in a European capital when war broke out and their hotel was involved in shelling. Lynne Fontaine, grabbed her husband in fear as glass and plaster showered them during the bombardment and begged him to comfort her that should they die that very night, they would be together "in a better world".
"Frankly, my dear", he said, "I simply cannot imagine 'closing' here and not 'opening' someplace else!"
God bless.

YES!!!!!
I have just returned from the theatre where I FINALLY watched the film!!!
FANTASTIC!!!
For the moment this perhaps is all I can say, for I feel so excited and the pictures are so vivid in my mind, that I shall need a few days to “digest” all and share my opinion.
Besides, it was a very special day for me! First, one of the biggest newspapers in North-Western Bulgaria published my article on a WHOLE PAGE! This is the second time my TTT-movie dedicated article is being published. First time it was on December 19-th in a newspaper for culture, literature and art. But they took a much shorter version. Now, I had a WHOLE PAGE!!!!!
Am I not proud!!!!! ;)
And then I went to see the movie….
FANTASTIC !!!!
Perhaps I’m being too emotional, too immodest, too excited….
But… Hey! I deserve it, don’t I!!!!
Just wanted to share this with you! :)
A very excited and happy Lhun

Great Lhun! Would you care to translate it to English sometimes, I would very much like to read it. :)
I just wanted to say that I am sorry that I have not been able to participate as much in this guild as I would like the last week, I have been doing some writing and it feels like it sucks my soul out, even if I am not happy with the little I have written. Though I will maybe not be so exhausted by it in a short time as I usually do after writing a while it has been tiresome, I apologize once again.

The Title is: ""The Two Towers" is not just an action movie, but a deep philosophy" and the second title runs "We shall watch a great battle between Rohan and Saruman"
Now, I can of course translate it, but it will not be of any value to you, my Guild-mates, YOU - Experts and Masters in Tolkien, who know so much about the events.
The reason I wrote the article was that Tolkien is not widely known here. People go to see the movie and they have not the slightest idea who is who, what is what, why are things happening...... The day I went to see the movie, right next to me was sitting a man, who had never heard of Tolkien AND!!! who had not even seen the first installment of the screen version!!!!!!
So, I actually wrote what I wrote in order to let people know what they were going to see when they go to the thratres - the main events in the TTT, the main characters....Well there was of course some analyses, but just a little. There was a shorter article, the first published in the other newspaper, that dealt more with analyses.
Well, enough of this, or I'm starting to feel as if I'm occupying your attention with personal matters....
Thanks for the attention, however!!!! :D
Oh, Finduilas, to answer your question, it is a dayly newspaper and it came out right on January 10-th.
Mrs. Maggott
01-12-2003, 02:39 PM
My dear Lhun, how can you think you are "taking our time" with "personal" matters? Your article sounds fascinating (and it's too bad that Mr. Jackson didn't have a chance to read it before he began "fleshing out" his plot theme for TTT, it might have assisted him greatly).
It would be wonderful if you could at least translate the "themes" you developed even if the entire thing is too long for you to do.
Thanks again for sharing.
All of you Tolkienologists are invited to the chapter by chapter discussion of The Book of Lost Tales! :D
It's just starting wth a discussion of the Foreword, over in the guild of Scholars.
I hope to see some of you guys over there!

Being mortal is a gift from Iluvatar to men; when you come too close to death you understand the value of life much better and start thinking of whether you use yours the way you should have.

DEBATE
I announce the topic of the new debate of our guild:
What would the situation in the Shire have been if Saruman hadn't come there?
Team A: Situation would have been much the same as described in the “Scouring of Shire.
Team B: Situation would have been as normal as hobbit life can be.
Everyone who is interested should PM me (except those who have already accepted to participate). By Sunday I will have formed the two Teams and the debate will start on Wednesday
PS. I forgot to say that the topic was proposed by Hirila.

I may misunderstand it myself, but I believe the question concerned Saruman's actual presence in the Shire rather than the presence of his minions. The argument therefore would center around whether his minions would have been able to do what they did (or would they have even bothered to do so) without his presence - or was his presence necessary.
If I am incorrect in this translation of the question, it would be deeply appreciated if the correct premise were stated beyond all possibility of error.
Thanks!

This is exactly the topic of the debate. Along with whether the hobbits would resist more if Saruman was absent.

Before searching, you should wait to see to which Team you will belong (which I will post by Sunday). The debate will be move to start on Wednesday, to give you more time to prepare.
During (and before) the debate, the members of each team usually PM each other to have a common course of arguments. But it is not mandatory.

Yes, that is what I intended in presenting such a topic.
Use your imagination: What had happened in the Shire, what would have happened if the facts had been different. If Saruman hadn't come there.
Debates rely on the participants belonging to a team representing one idea on the topic. This idea is not necessarily your own opinion, it may be the very reversed. But as a member of that team you are meant to post arguments for your side not your opinion .

Absolutely. One posts arguments to support whatever side one is on even if one holds beliefs diametric to that side. It is very important that the members of a team get together and divide the response so that the same points aren't made several times while some other points are missed. Furthermore, the team members making the opening and closing statements should also be chosen; the closing statement should be a summary of all the points made by the team. There should also be a moderator on the thread to be sure everyone posts in order and that mistakes are quickly addressed (a person posting too soon, too late, out of order or some other problem).
Also, judging is done the same way. It is not for the judge to decide which side is right, but rather, which side presented its argument most convincingly. Therefore, judges should not enter the thread until the debate is completed and all sides have posted, nor should the judge do any "research" on the topic in order to ascertain which side is, as noted, "correct". Of course, this is a very subjective debate, so the possibility of there being a factual answer which would preclude one side or the other is moot.

The Teams of the debate are the following:
Team A: Celebrien , Elennainie, Gil-Galad, Húrin Thalion, Melian
Team B: Anamatar VI, Finduilas, FoolOfAtook, Mrs. Maggott
If someone else shows interest in participating until Wednesday, s/he will be put in Team B.
The debate starts on Wednesday and will last almost two weeks until the next Sunday (February 9th).
The judges of the debate are: Hirila, Lhunithiliel and myself.
On Wednesday I will open the thread of the debate. Until then, the teams can organize their arguments. The only books that can be used in the debate are the Lotr books.
Have fun!

I'm sorry, but my mind is on "neutral" at the moment. Which side of the debate does each team take? I'd really like to know before I begin to think about my responses (obviously!). Also, will we post according to a set schedule or will it be up to the teams as to who does what? I assume that the team defending the premise will post first, followed by the opposition and then back and forth until the final post, but if I'm wrong, please let me know. Thanks.

Mrs. Maggot: I believe that our team is arguing the position
"Situation would have been as normal as hobbit life can be." At least, that's what Team "B" is given the issue assignment.

Sorry for the teams, I thought you knew the sides. Well, here they are:
Team A: Situation would have been much the same as described in the “Scouring of Shire".
Team B: Situation would have been as normal as hobbit life can be.
As for the way that each Team will act, it is up to the members of the team. Someone may feel to post more frequently than other members. It is not that important.
But I will fill you in with the tules of the debate when I open the thread. For now, it should be sufficient to know which side you are.

I'd like to go ahead and offer forth a resolution that both sides refer to years using Shire-Reckoning during the debate, for reasons that I would imagine are quite clear to all parties involved. These are what I'm already using in my notes for the debate, and I can't imagine that anyone has any objections.
Eagerly awaiting a stimulating intellectual confrontation,
Hirila

If the members of the groups want to make up a strategy and collect arguments, of course. PM each other and look what you can find for your position. Do everything that may help you become a team and finally win the debate.

Okay.... the ghost of Christmas Past has returned. I intend to slowly get some of the administrative things done that only a moderator can do. First and foremost is to get the membership list corrected. During my absence, due to my father's illness and death, I have been sorely remiss in keeping our guild members list updated.
I request that every active member please post to this thread and identify yourself. This is especially important to those who have applied for membership in my absence and have been left hanging. I'm very excited to be back and hope that all my guild mates will forgive my extended absence. My personal tragedies have made the end of 2002 and the beginning of 2003 quite a trying time for me and I look forward to things getting better as the year progresses.

Glad to have you back. May this year be as delightful as last year was sorrowful. Didn't think it necessary to note active status as I am on the "b" team for the debate which begins when again? and have a lecture coming up at the end of next month (I think).

Hey Team A people: who is our group leader? Someone experienced in debates, please decide to be the leader of our team and PM the rest of us about our arguments. It's my first debate, and I do not want to be the leader.

Is there a leader for team B, either? Like wise, I don't wish to be leader as I am not as experienced in the art of debating as some others.:)

I am sorry, I don't think there was enough time for me between the posting of teams and premise and the start of the debate. I was out of town most of last week and now I have the flu. Would anyone - especially the admins - mind if we adjourned the debate for say a week so that maybe I can find that brain of mine which I think I coughed out a few hours ago?
Of course, if that's not possible, I will carry on as best I can, but I did really want to "do it right" rather than simply doing it Wednesday.
Thanks.

If more people ask that the debate is moved forward s few days, I will do so. Unfortunately I can't do this if only you, Mrs. Maggott request it.
But even if this doesn't happen, don't worry. You can stay out of the debate for the first 2-3 days, until you regain your spirit and then participate.

Hey all, i've returned back to the guild after quite some time.
A few weeks ago i mentioned my fathers health was in very bad condition, but im glad to say that he was finally released from Hospital just the other day after a month of being in there, and all is fine and well.
So i guess less trips to the hospital every night equals more time for the guild, heh.
I know i have been posting in other parts of the forum during this time, i was doing so while at work, but nowhere near enough time to invest into the guild activities.
Anyways, its good to see debates are happening again and stuff.

You don't seem to like Irish people very much, do you? I say this considering another statement on Heren Istarion. Maybe I'm wronging you and its just an unhappy coincidence that i saw both posts.
The first time I thought it was only a joke but now that i see another derogatory post i wonder.
Forgive me if im over-reacting but im sure everyone can appreciate how angry it makes you when you here people who are not from your country telling jokes about it.
I appreciate that you were probably only making the joke in good fun but it's a funny kind of patriotism Irish people have:
We've only been our own masters for 80 years after being horribly oppressed for the preceding 700. We've doone a damn good job too. We came from nothing to being one of the largest economies in europe in just 80 years!
We are all very proud of our achievements since gaining our independance from the British over here, and (again i'm sorry if i'm overreacting) it really gets under my skin to hear people talking about my nation as the backwater bog of the 19th century. It and its people have come a very long way since then and would appreciate if people remembered that the next time they think of ireland as a place with leprechauns sitting on toadstools singing out "top o' the mornin' to ya".

Oh dear! I had no idea that my (very) little Irish wit (and, yes, I am Irish and Scottish and a few quiet other things that "snuck" in) would be so misunderstood!
The "Irish diplomacy" thing is in fact a compliment. I saw it hanging in the house of an Irish friend of mine who wears a shirt that says, "Tis Herself!" Another of my favorites is the Irish Prayer: "O Lord, bless those who love us and for those who hate us, turn their hearts! (And if You can't turn their hearts, then turn their ankles so we'll know them by their limpin'!)"
One of me favorite Scottish jokes involves an English lecturer who gives a presentation in Edinborough. He is very well received by his large audience and the entire lecture goes very well. At the end, after much applause, he looks benignly out over his audience of Scots and says in that wonderful low key, English way, "Dear friends, Scotland is a wonderful country and its people are of the very best! However, I was born and Englishman, I have lived as an Englishman and I shall die as an Englishman!" And from way in the back comes this gruff voice saying, "Och, man! Hae ye no ambition?!"
The truth is, my dear Gilgilad, if one were to make "funny" remarks about someone else's nationality (although I have quite a few good Italian and Polish jokes!), then it could be considered insulting. That's why I only make fun of myself! (But then, there's so much material to draw on there!) But you must admit that the Irish do a lot of self-deprecating humor. The only people who do more of it that I know of are the Jews.
Anyway, I hope this sets your mind at rest concerning my "feelings" about the Irish (and the Celts in general)! If I offended you, please understand that that was the very last thing I intended to do! God bless!

Well, of course you were grumpy! You see, it's one thing to make fun of one's own, but don't let anyone else do it! And since you didn't know what I was, you had a right to be protective of the Irish. (By the way, have you read the book about how the Irish saved civilization? It's about the old monks and it's grand!)
The above is one of the reasons I don't "do" Italian or Polish jokes (although I love the one my Italian friend told me: How can you tell where flamingos live? By the plastic Italians on their lawns! Of course, to get that, you'd have to live in the USA and see all the Italian homes in Florida filled with pink plastic flamingos on their front lawns!)
Fear not! I took no offense and I have every sympathy for the tragic (and triumphant!) history of Ireland. Never has such a small land brought forth such greatness in the face of such misery, suffering and want. Your pride is well justified! However, I will say this in warning!! Never!!! put your nation's pride in the hands of her athletes! They'll tear your heart out and jump up and down on it!! Sigh......... just when you thought it would all come together...... it all comes apart!

A scolaire dhil, Mrs maggot,
Your simple but apt description of ireland's history, "tragic (and triumphant!)",
had me absolutely beaming with pride, i felt like jumping up and down for joy: SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS WHAT WE DID!!!
Of course the Irish saved the world, more than once i might add. Sure it was St. Brendan, a monk who's monestary was literally 5minutes back the road from me who discovered America hundreds of years before that wannabe discoverer Columbus.
It is also a well known fact that God (who we are very close friends with on the fair isle) created whiskey to stop us from ruling the world.
We also have the 2 best sports in the world in Gaelic football and Hurling, as well as the world's greatest soccer player in Roy Keane.
Seamus Heaney is the world's greatest poet, guess where he's from. What about James Joyce the second best writer in history?
In fairness though, we do have the world's worst weather and its funniest accent. I swear, if you could here the Kerry (South west) accent i am endowed you would wet yourself. Oh yeah, and our neighbours arn't the best either.

Me dear child! Before ye start takin' bows for the world's worst weather, a winter (and even a summer) weekend in Siberia might cause you to rethink! You know, most people believe that biting insects are terrible in the tropics! Don't you believe it! They are far worse in the sub-arctic regions because the dreadful wee beasties have to eat enough for a whole year in a few weeks! Did you know that the birds nesting on the ground in the tundra regions don't have to seek food for their nestlings? The wee birdies simply eat the tons of mosquitoes and other blood suckers that come to feed on them! In fact (horrible as it is to contemplate), one of the ways the poor sods of the gulag were put to death was to hang them naked outside and in a few days, they would be virtually bled to death!
No, Ireland has many a 'soft' day, but it also has glorious sunshine and the best horses in the world which feed on the grass that grows so lush and green in that "awful" weather!

I just found out about some test we are all supposed to be taking. There are so many threads in this guild now that it's very hard to find things! :( I wonder why something so big and apparently required of all members was not posted here, in the "Happenings in the Guild" section? Perhaps that is why so many have not responded to the test time thing. It would be very helpful if we really used this thread as a first-stop on TTF for Guild of Tolk. activities. I think the last post before mine on this thread was from the 7th, and it's the 12th now. Any thoughts on how we can keep our guild space a bit cleaner and more organized?

True Elennainie. Some announcements are lost in the large number of thread in the guild. With the current format of the forum, there isn't much to do, except to use this forum to announce everything that may interest the guild-members, even if it is also announced in the appropriate thread.

I'm going to open a closed thread for announcements. The only one able to post will be myself. Anyone who has announcements which need to be made may PM me and I'll post them there.
Also.... everyone in the guild will need to subscribe to that thread. You can do this in your user cp section of the forum even to subscribe to a closed thread.
My life is still a mess and I am trying to juggle professional, personal and family committments to allow me to again devote more time to my favorite people.... you guys and gals. The proper way to subscribe to a thread (other than posting in it) is to go to that thread and go to the bottom of any page. At the bottom of the page on the right hand side is a highlighter subscribe to this thread. Click on this phrase and, voila!!... you are subscribed. :)

Okay, I'm glad to announce that this evening, I'll be doing the first rounds of testing. Scheduling is first come, first serve- whoever responds talks to me over MSN Messenger first gets to test first. I should be on pretty much non-stop after 8:00 PM EST, and I expect to be on most of the time between now and then. Tonight, I'll only be doing tests over MSN Messenger, and I'll only be doing tests for Sr. Journeymen and lower. Since I can only think of one member who has their eyes set on Expert right now, I don't think that this will be too much of an issue. I'll hopefully have time to test five or six Guildmembers tonight, and that's a conservative estimate.
Thanks for your cooperation and good luck on the tests.

Ah! I understand now. The sort of thing you do to someone you don't particularly care for and who is the nervous sort. I remember once when I was about 8 and my dad brought home his truck (he was with a company that used to deliver milk and cream to all the A&P supermarkets in New York City and he drove the biggest truck there is before they have to have a separate trailer).
Well, I was sitting on the front fender when one of my dad's "friends" leaned in and blew the horn. I can still remember it and it happened over 50 years ago. The guy thought it was funny. I didn't. I hit him with a rock. I thought that was funny. He didn't. Humor is a very subjective thing.

The activity of this place has reached total 'ZERO"! :(
The only two threads that still try to survive and keep the image of the Guild are the Quenya Lessons and the Study.
But in them only NO MORE than two or three people show activity!
FOR THIS I THINK WE HAVE TO THANK THEM!
I have tried a lot of means - I opened the "Round Table" - "hall" where I invited ALL of you to discuss the matter of activities. I asked you to come up with suggestions and opinions what can the Guild of Tolkienology do to go deeper into Tolkien and what its members are called Tolkienologists for!
Even friends from "afar" ( ;) :D) came and shared their opinion with us in order to and with the best intention to help this Guild restore its proud image and name!
ALL IN VAIN!!!
Some new ideas are being born and very good ones, indeed!
But their "parents" soon totally forget about them! And when the "parent"doesn't care why shall the "baby"?!
I once again ( perhaps for the last time) invite you to sit at the Round Table and show not ONLY your presence but your creativity and willingness to revive the life of this place.

I am sorry I haven't been more active, but I am still recovering from giving "birth" to my own "baby" on the lecture thread and now a new lecture is there for the digesting - and commenting.
I also wanted to get into that pride essay contest (a fascinating subject and one that demands thought, not just an "off the top of one's head" response) - but I have had to keep putting it off because of commitments here. Sometimes it is not that there is nothing to do, but there is too much to do that one can't participate in everything or one is just overwhelmed and in the end does little or nothing.
I really do not wish to "rest on my laurels" with the lecture, but sometimes the days just fly by with other commitments and I am only able to make a comment or two on something rather than sitting down and putting the kind of effort in something as I did the lecture. I will say, though at the moment, I am trying to procure Richard Blackwelder's, Tolkien's Thesaurus, so I am not exactly idle - just tired out!

I'm very sorry Lhun. I've been devoting most of my time to the Quenya study, and neglecting the rest of the forum (and Guild). I also agree with Mrs. Maggott that the threads in here have become too overwhelming. It was much nicer when we all put happenings in the guild in the ....what else!? "Happenings in the Guild" thread, and there were just a few threads to check and keep track of. Lets delete some of these old threads (vote which ones to keep), and clean up our forum space, and set better guidelines on where to post.
Let's concentrate our efforts on better quality and participation on a few threads, rather than scant activity on numerous threads!!! -- that's my opinion.
Also, I do want to say a huge thank you to Lhun and gate7ole for keeping our guild together in Grond's absence.
And Hurin Thalion, what on earth happened? You've resigned from the Guild? And you're banished to the Halls of Mandos? What does that mean? And we can't PM you anymore! Email me!

:) I know, my friend and I thank you!
Let's take good care of that "baby"!
Gals, I never meant that anyone should apologize or anything of the kind....
Please, try to understand that I'm worried about the lack of creativity much more than activity itself.
As for some of the threads, I don't thunk they should be deleted, but just un-made "sticky". But we need a Mod for this and in the absence of Grond, who is one of them, I find it difficultt to bother other Mods for that....
Although... why not! I'll do it.
Let me hear your suggestions:
WHAT THREADS should be UN-made "sticky"?

If anyone from the Guild would like to discuss further the matters I appealed to here, please, do it in the 'Round Table"-thread. I'll be teher waiting for you :)

I suggest we should unite the application/instruction and Joining thread. There are many Sticky threads of Lectures too. Can't we combine them? And Hurin Thalion, what on earth happened? You've resigned from the Guild? And you're banished to the Halls of Mandos? What does that mean? And we can't PM you anymore!

Walter
03-19-2003, 12:06 PM
Yes, it seems Hurin has been - temporary, at the moment - banned...
I just read that Hirila won't be around for a while either...
vBulletin - the software used for TTF - allows setting up moderators for guilds, meaning that such a moderator can merge, delete threads etc, but only within the guild he has moderator rights in. I suggest one of the "deputies" contacts WM and asks if it would be possible to set this up here. I'm pretty sure Maedhros would want that too for his guild.

Since there seemed to be less participation in the Guild and the firum as well, I think we should immediately do something about it. First of all, I would like to appolagise for not participating a lot too but I had a lot of work in school.
I suggest that we could make a course where we would study letter writing. I mean since Tolkien had been an unbelievable writer of letters shouldn't we learn too. I want to ask the people who had read the Letters of Tolkien to tell us their opinion since it seems that they would be the teachers.:)
However, anybody with a great experience in that sphere could help us develop our communication skills.

The guild certainly needs an injection of new threads. A lot of the long standing ones have stagnated and little has been added to many in a long time. Perhaps, as was suggested, a streamlining of the guild should take place, whereby the old threads with little interest be removed if not deleted, and some of the similar ones merged.
Mrs. Maggott
03-20-2003, 12:00 AM
Yes, I agree. I would also suggest that we find "outside" topics to investigate more fully - that is, things that address Tolkien's work in general rather than simply focusing on a small aspect of one work.
For instance, there is a book out about Tolkien's use of time (Verlyn Flieger, "A Question of Time, J.R.R. Tolkien's Road to Faerie"). It is a fascinating subject and takes into account "immortality" as Tolkien presents it in his work (a burden in the end) and his religious understanding of immortality in Christ (eternal bliss). There are some references to "the Second Music of the Ainur" in which the Children of Illuvatar will participate and so on. Something like this would help very much in understanding Tolkien rather than merely another in-depth investigation into some part of the stories and attempting to learn about Tolkien's vision from that.
Of course, I'm sure this has already been done and I am just unaware of it, but there are so many books out which examine these various aspects of Tolkien's work (some better than others certainly), that it might be worthwhile to look into some of them. They may provide considerable useful food for thought.

I agree with gilgalad, but I also would like to add that many of the members who participated actively in the forum are no longer in it.Take for example Eonwe,I haven't seen him for more than 6 months, and Milena from Serbia,I haven't seen her for about 4 months.
I think we need some new, ambitious and curious members who will participate actively in the forum.
I like the Study a lot, it's probably my favorite thread in this Guild! Also I am planning to post an essay soon, so just know that not everyone is dead, so to speak!
That was probably a little innapropriate, I didn't mean to say that the rest of the guild was not participating! My apologies everyone.

Definitely a good idea, if you asked me! Although, I do wonder if we would even have participation in that...I don't know about the rest of you, but I still have hardly any grasp on the geography of Middle Earth, and I would like to learn the Silmarillion better before I attempt anything that doesn't directly relate to Middle Earth. I am still trying to grasp what he wrote about Middle Earth, so I'm sure if I can handle branching off into another "field" so to speak, of Tolkien. I would certainly be willing to try though!

2/ To my Guild-fellows: I think that there is a common mistake that I constantly witness - MIS-using threads (those dedicated to Guild-matters especially).
Look now here - this thread has been created ONLY for the purpose of announcing things to the Guild and NOT for dscussion of Guild-matters. BUT!!! most of the members keep on using it precisely for discussing! Now I'm dragged to continue the discussion here and not in the right-for-discussion-thread....
Because, there IS a thread created particularly for discussing Guild-matters (Round Table) ... BUT!!! People go there and ask questions... I have just seen questions about the long expected debate....
BUT!!! There is a "Debate Work book" for this purpose!
There is a thread for asking questions - only a few (except me ;) ) have used it....
You see???? We OURSELVES make a chaos! It's NOT that there are many threads! Each one of The existing ones has its purpose (the threads that need URGENTLY to be merged, hoever, are the several dedicated to the ranking-testing-application matters). We shall just have to learn to use them properly!
Oh! And I was NOT right to say that only two threads were alive (the Quenya Course and the Study)! The Lecture Hall is going very well! I hope you find the lectures posted so far not only interesting but also educative! I do!
3/ New discussion threads: Yes! But don't abandon them later! Of course, if there is a poor interest towards the topic of the discussion offered the thread will soon go to the second-third page... Natural way of selection ;) :D But I don't expect any of you to suggest a dull topic! The only care will be to keep the interest "hot" ;)
Don't ever forget that we have the "Round Table" thread created ESPECIALLY and PARTICULARLY to be at the Guild-members' disposal when they wish to throw in a new idea of a new discussion or comment on the activities going on in the Guild.
Whole this post should NOT have been here BUT at the "Round Table"!
Therefore, I'll make a copy of it there and whatever comments you have, please come there :)

Yet, as I am doing here, the common reaction is to respond to something on the thread in which it appears - and so discussions grow where there should only be announcements etc. Perhaps when this happens, the posting should be moved to the appropriate thread and notification on the first thread left for those commenting to go to the new location. It may take a while doing this and it's a pain, but eventually we may all learn where we should be doing what. I know this comment should not be made here, but without the above comments to which I am responding, my post in another more appropriate thread would be nonsense and viewed as same.

Hey! Thank you, Maedhros! :)
I am very glad to see you around! I'd be happy if our two guilds establish much more solid and beneficial relations!

MEMBERS OF THE GUILD,
I am sure all of you have witnessed the lately on-going discussions in the Forum and have understood that they have lead to the revival of the old good idea of forming the C-9 Council.
Please read the respective threads in the News and Announcement forum and then vote.
Because you are one of the most active and contributing members of this whole community! :)

Fellow Tolkienologists, I wanted to inform you that I resign from Deputy Master.
I will stay though as a member and contribute as much as my free time lets me to the activities of the guild.
I'm sure Lhunithiliel and FoolOfATook as Deputy Masters will handle the guild perfectly.
Thank you.

If your decision is based upon external commitments and obligations, then I can only say that your efforts will be missed.
Given what has happened before on the forum, I can only hope that the above is in fact the reason for your resignation. I really quail at the thought of yet another contretemps!
God bless.

But why Lhun? Why Gate? You too have done so much for the guild and finally when the time has come for you to claim the credit you are resigning? And Lhun why are you leaving the Guild! Don't tell me it is due to any squabble within the forum? We will miss you too Lhun! But please, do reconsider your choice.
Both of you will really be missed and i deem the guild wont be the same without you. This is an honest truth which I am replaying for Lhun's energy was the main thing that kept this guild running and putting forward New Ideas. Please both of you, do re-consider your decisions?

Perhaps Lhun felt that her enthusiasm was not being responded to by others in the Guild or that she was not "good enough" to inspire the type of response among the members that she believed was itself worthy of the Guild. If that is the case, then it's sad. The Guild is doing wonderful things - the lecture series is certainly a worthy endeavor and it's merely a "first time" for that type of thing. Already the Tolkienwiki has gained some very valuable input which would not have come to pass otherwise.
There are many things going on in the Guild. Indeed, perhaps there are too many things going on and our resources as a limited group are being stretched too thin. But whatever the case, as it says in Ecclesiastes, there is a "time" for all things. The Guild cannot be "
