Guys, the first topic is published. If somebody wants to suggest a topic for the next month, please feel free to do it!

'From A Thought,Through The Love, Till The Reality
..................and finally the cruel reality showed its real face.

Why do you think that happened?
Why didn't the Valar and the Firstborn live happily?
I don't really seem to understand the subject. As far as I know, after the return of the exiled Noldor, i.e. after the War of Wrath, the Elves dwelt in Valinor together withthe Valar.
Is the topic of the essay more like:
"Why did the Noldor want to leave Valinor and establish realms of their own?"

Melian
01-20-2003, 02:14 PM
Yeah, it does sound a bit vaguely but maybe that's the point--you can interpret it as you like.
To me it's more like : "Explore the rocesses that took place from Eru's thought to the cruel reality in the next epochs".Though I think that the middle subject, LOVE, is really a driving force for these processes, what about hatred then? Wasn't it sometimes even more vital for what happened next? Or pride--it's such an essential emotion in the entire prolific wrk of Tolkien? Whatever, I guess, the more interpretations, the better for this undertaking.
And I have a suggestion --I psted it in the other essay thread---Can we post images, poetry and so on in the essays?

Gil-Galad
01-20-2003, 04:06 PM
ups,I think Finduilas should re-published her topic,or at least to clearify what does she mean.
I am sorry for that, but when it is 02:50h a.m. it is hard to make things in the best way and to see whether there is any problem with the topic :( :(

Finduilas
01-20-2003, 09:14 PM
I don't really seem to understand the subject. As far as I know, after the return of the exiled Noldor, i.e. after the War of Wrath, the Elves dwelt in Valinor together withthe Valar.

I talked to Gil-Galad and he asked me to explain my view.

Now, the topic is :
From A Thought,Through The Love, Till The Reality

Where did the world come from? Iluvatars thoughts ,didn't it?
However, it was innocent and young then and nothing seemed to be able to ruin that peace.
Then came the Firstborn and Valar's love to them. However, that love caused many mistakes later- spoiling the Elves, causing pride and egoism. Love had to be the Golden Ere of the Valar, however it became the Downfal or at least its beginning.
Soon the reality showed its real face and the Elves were no longer protected from Evil. They did have to know and understand to beat it.
So my main question and subject for lots of thesis is :
Where can we find the quilt for this transformation and who should we blame:
Eru
The Valar
Morgoth
Elves?
However, this subject can be interpret(as Melian said) in many ways and everybody has the freedom to express his opinion.

Please, excuse me, but the teacher in me has made me do a small correction :o

The title of the topic should be WITHOUT articles.
So, it should be like this:

"From Thought, Through Love, Till Reality "

 :p

Finduilas
01-21-2003, 01:36 PM
Thank you, Lhun. What would have we done without you?
That's surely better. It didn't sound very correctly to me as well, but now is perfect.
Thanks.:p :) :)

Hm...my essay is ready and I am going to post it after a couple of minutes.I don't like it..........and probably I have many mistakes but at 02:19a.m. is very hard to check for mistakes.:(

In addition I would say that Gate7ole published very interesting essay and I like most his style.I also like Finduilas' way of presenting her essay.

Cheer up, dear Elf-friend!You know I like you whatever the spelling...:)
Now, maybe you'll do better with the next topic!
And btw, I have a suggestion for one. I'm sorry if it's early, you decide. But I think there's nothing wrong if I put it forward now.
Well, the problems in Feanor's character have always thrilled me.
What about: "PRIDE--HELPFUL OR RUINOUS"?
Sure, it is prone to any corrections and suggestions made by you.
Your turn now.

OK, let's here some suggestions about the new topic.

Lhunithiliel and me will soon come up with the judgement of the first effort.

Melian
02-20-2003, 09:12 AM
I think I suggested one already--about pride, you can see it some posts above.
But I have another one to offer, and yes, I know it's too pushy of me...
Well, think about this :Crime and Punishment in Tolkien's Works.
It is meant to explore the different aspects of guilt (like betrayals, slaughters, hurts) and the inevitable judgement by the author--through providence and sufferings. Don't you think that it's always like what goes around, comes around?

Gil-Galad

I'm sorry I didn't write anything for a long time, but I was ill and not able to write anything.But.........

I think this topic is quite interesting:
"PRIDE--HELPFUL OR RUINOUS"? .
So I suggest it to be the next one.We can start it from tomorrow and its end is ..........March 21st 2003.

May I suggest a slight alteration in the title of the topic for the second round?
How about:

"PRIDE--HELPFUL OR RUINOUS"?
to be changed to:
"PRIDE--CONSTRUCTIVE OR RUINOUS"?

Well, thank you !!! (Seems the bribes helped after all:D )

And, personally, I agree with the minor alternation of the new topic. Actually, I wanted to think of an antonym for 'ruinous', but at the time it just wouldn't come in English. Well, constructive is just it.

Sure. I'm looking forward to the results. I suggest we get someone who hasn't posted an essay here.
If you don't like the "Crime and Punishment" topic, what about trying to write an essay from the name of your favourite character? Let's name it The Confessions or sth like that?!...
For example, you decide you are Turin. And write about 300 words about your feelings and reflections about a certain event or in general. Or you are Manwe and share your views about what's going on in Middle-earth...
If you think that's fun, we may do it?!...

Eöl
04-27-2003, 12:34 AM

04-28-2003, 08:39 AM
Eol, have I understood correctly? Am I to judge again?
If so...I will..You can count on me.

As for the Confessions - topic... I guess this time you might lose me as a judge ;)

'Cause I intent to participate!

You know what will be cool - to have two confessions done by two different people about one and the same character...

I am even tempted to throw in the idea of doing it right in this way... Say, me and FoT (for example) take up the character of .... it really doesn't matter which one ... and we both write our "confessions" and then we compare and then we can have a judge to say which confession was closer to the character as Tolkien himself had thought of it.

What do you say?

Eöl
04-28-2003, 03:01 PM
Since there was only three essays, FOAT is the only judge we need this time around, but thanks for the offer Lhun. I didn't realize there were so few essays. Anyhow, I would be willing to do a "double perspective" with someone.

Essay Contest Judgment!

by FoolofATook

First of all, I'd like to congratulate and commend all three writers, since all of the essays were quite good. To trot out an old cliche, I'm sorry that I can only pick one winner. Stale, but true. ;)

Reading these essays, the first thing that came to mind was Chaucer. Anyone who's had the, errr, "fortune", to read "The Parson's Tale" knows that in the piece, Chaucer put forth the typical medieval theological view that pride was the root of the six other Deadly Sins. Eol's essay most embodied this idea, laying out a very solid case, through the use of documentation, that Feanor's pride was the cause of his downfall.

Gil-Galad took a more ambivalent view of pride, pointing out that it can be a tool of the oppressed to never truly give in to tyrants, while he still acknowledged pride's terrible destructive possibilities. I thought that Gil-Galad's essay was wonderful, and I thought that his examples from his nation's history were very appropriate for his paper. In some ways, I'm disappointed that he did not choose one side or the other, but I also recognize that within the way he chose to frame the argument, no other conclusion seemed to be possible, so I feel that I can't hold his indecision against him.

Melian's essay also focuses on the ambivalent nature of pride, but uses examples from Tolkien to illustrate both sides of the argument. However, I wish she had elaborated more on her examples of positive effects of pride, since as they stand now, I'm not sure that I'm convinced. Melian's essay was, in my opinion, easily the most poetic, and I would like to take a moment to comment on how much I enjoyed simply reading it.

All three essays were good, but ultimately, I believe that Eol's was the best of the three, largely due to his use of documentation, and his decision to take a very firm postion on side of the debate.

(Never done this before- hope this suffices ;))

Eöl
04-29-2003, 02:46 AM
Hey, that was quick! Thanks FoaT, now on to the next topic! "The Confessions!" Write an essay from a character's point of view on an event. Not very defined, but that means the possibilities are endless! For example, you could write from the perspective of Manwe on the actions of Feanor, or vice versa, writing from Feanor's perspective on the Valar. How about we have these turned in by May 28th? That's one month from today.

P.S. - Melian, please correct me if I am wrong in any part of my description!

Gil-Galad

Well,of course you can be a judge again. But I think it would be better if there three judges.I personally think that Lhun and Walter fit best to the role of judges.I've read their things in "The What If"game and I think they are great writes,so they can judge best who has written the best essay.

I'll assume that you mean that Walter and Lhun are the best judges not named "FoolofATook"... ;) :D

Seriously, I think that a panel of three judges would be a good idea, and that both Walter and Lhun are more than qualified to sit on such a panel. (probably more qualified than I am, come to think of it ;))

What do you say Walter and Lhun?

Eöl
05-04-2003, 09:57 PM
Walter, yes. Lhun wrote an essay, so I don't know about her. If we get a lot of response and need more than two judges, I think Anamatar IV could help out.

Lhunithiliel
05-04-2003, 10:13 PM
Hey, guys, don't make such a fuss about it!
I think 3 is OK, but of course I cannot judge now...I'd put my essay...or whatever it is ;) :D in the first place, after I have had to enter the twilight zone to hear that confession and bring it up to you! :D

As for Walter...ask him. I dunno whether he'll accept or no.

Walter
05-04-2003, 11:13 PM
I feel honoured and I gladly accept...if someone could fill me in with the details and I get a couple of days...

Lhunithiliel
05-05-2003, 07:04 AM
Good!!!! :D

Now, that we have Walter on the jury, I think that it would be wise to have other two judges ...but preferrably either out-out-of-the-guild (for ex. Maedhros/Nom/Ithrynluin/Nenya/Wonko/Eriol/etc..) or in-guild members who will not participate with essays (I can't say who...).

Thus, FoaT can also participate as well as others, who I know write beautifully! ;)

And Foat, common! You are a wonderful judge! :D But I'd wish to see you more as a writer! ;)

Another thing:
Can I write another confession? Of a different character?
Well, I guess, I shouldn't.... but still ....this topic makes it so amuzing and challenging to "crawl under the skin" of a character!

Eöl
05-05-2003, 05:51 PM
But I'd wish to see you more as a writer!

Hey yeah Mr. Fancypants English Major!;) Any of those people will be fine, next time Nom is on MSN I will talk to her about it. If she's not on before the 28th I will PM her.

Well,I have to announce that I probably will not be able to participate in this time. The deadline is 28 th May,but May 26 I have my graduation party with my school and then wea are going to Sunny Beach. So,I'm very busy these days, and having in mind that we are preparing a great trance party near Plovdiv with Astral Projection,I even do not have time to sleep.

There are a couple of days more left till the final date for submission of your essays on the last topic "Confessions".

I simply CAN'T believe that the Guild lacks skilfull writers more than just 3!

Well?

As I said I would like to particiapte but these weeks I do not have the phsysical ability to participate everywhere,to organize a trance festiaval,to prepare for a graduation party,to fall in love with a girl etc...............if the we make round 2 of the confessions I would very much like to participate representing Finrod Felagund or Feanor.

Lhunithiliel
05-29-2003, 07:20 AM
The time for confessions is over. :p

Unfortunately, there were only 3 essays provided.

As far as I remember, the question of who will judge them and issue the winner of this essay-round stopped with Walter's agreeing to be a judge and if I'm not mistaken, we talked about inviting Nom or Maedhros or Anamatar...

Well???

What shall we do?

I'd suggest we finalize this round and wait until G-G returns ....or I may also speak to his faithful Squire - Finduilas to take up the job.

Anyway, we need 3 judges to issue the winner out from the 3 essays-confessions.

VOLUNTEERS?????

Here are the judges:

1.Anamatar
2.Walter
3.Maedhros

I only want to ask you about the 'deadline' of the judgement.Since when should they be posted?

About the topic,hmm....
How about something like that:

From the idea of creation till the final result.

The topic concerns the initial thoughts of not only our Proffesor but other writers as well and their development till the end of their work.Because there certainly are many changes which are made throughout the process.

Anyway, that's just the topic which I thought of now.If someone else has a better sujestion, please post it!

I however wish to ask our honourable (E)squire ;) Finduilas:

How about: The power of doom.

Well, they are still:

I really have to clear something out!

WHERE IS THE HALL OF ESSAYS THREAD?!

Don't get me wrong, but it...simply is ..GONE! It's not in the Guild ...or at least I can't find it!
Will someone explain please?!

As for the judges, Anamatar said that he wouldn't be able to judge them due to debate problems.
Now I would really much like the two present judges to hurry up with their decisions...and as for the third one I'll try to find one...AVAILABLE!!!:)

Because with these debates many of the mebers are literaly covered with work and have no time left for other activities.
So here we go:

Walter
Maedhros
FOAT
Inderjit S

Read and discuss and then ( soon, please;) ) post your decisions. If ONE of you would not be able do not worry.

Gil-Galad
06-09-2003, 06:48 PM
Yes.We are judging them. And the next topic will be
The power of doom
but we still need to clarify some things about it.I'll talk to Lhun to understand what did she mean. The Doom as a whole,or the power of the doom in different characters' cases.

Walter

All three "confessions" were very good, I'd like to congratulate all three authors.

However, having to judge I cannot say that all three essays "touched" me equally strong. Hence here is, how I would rank them:

1) Melian
2) Lhunithiliel
3) Eöl

I'd like to ask a few questions.
some time ago I suggested that I be a judge to the next round of essays. Since the Guild was experiencing some summer nap, and this event didn't happen, do we still 'compete' and 'judge', or is this only for the pleasure? It's all right for me either way, because it means I can participate too. Given I no longer have to study for exams, I can devote my time to it....What do you say?

But if you insist on judging, we should think of a new deadline (for flattering and bribing the judge, of course, that would be me :) ).

And. Ladies, I know you've heard it before---but----you really have a gift!

Lhun., your essay so much reminds me of a favourite Shakespearean sonnet! Beautiful.

Fly away on my Zephyr
I feel it more than ever
And in this perfect weather
We'll find a place together
Fly on my wing

Will you stay with me
Will you be my love
Among these fields of barley?
We'll forget the sun
In his jealous sky
As we lie in fields of gold....

I checked it.;)
Thank you.

Ah L O V E ....... ;)

Anyway....Let us leave those two alone 'cause they need privacy ;) :D

Now.... I'm changing the subject of the next "round" of essays - from love I switch to war!

"War in Tolkien works" - this is the subject of some long lasting research that I'm about to undertake. But in relation to it, a while ago I asked a few people to write essays on this topic.

In our Hall of Essays I have just published two of them as they were written by two of our most estimated members - Gate and Eriol :)

The topic is open to more interpretations = essays and to your comments here in this thread (the other one will be only for essays, remember).

All right.......... Let's speak about wars!

Wars?!Very very,very interesting I would say!Finally I may write something after a break of about 8 months!I like the topic,if I have some more free time I'll write something,I promise!;) :p
And what can I say about Gate's work. It's a masterpiece, and I think Lhun should publish it in The Hall of Lectures because it is a real lecture!

Well its not necessary to write exactly about wars(i think so).If you cant write about wars but for piece then write about piece and how not to make war and how the wars in Tokien's works could not have happened

Don't worry everybody makes mistakes, even the professors in English language.Having in mind that you've been learning English for an year I would say your English is very good actually. What about me?I've learned English for more than five years and still it's as good as I would like it to be!
Don't worry just write slower and check your posts, just like me ;)

Yeah... it's not the thing you have to be ashamed of... after all, nobody's perfect.;)
The good thing is that you want to write, to use the language (practice makes perfect;)) actively... keep doing so!:D

BTW: If you're affraid of making too many mistakes, try to write your posts in Microsoft Word editor. Just set an appropriate language and it will 'mark' a spelling mistake every time it's needed. It is also helpful with correcting mistakes as the programme can suggest you how the word should look like.

Fingon -by Gil-Galad
Finrod -by ????? (probably Nom will be interested)

Since I've been always judged by far, and never been a judge mysefl, I have some questions/suggestions.

Well, I'm not quite aware if we have a certain judging system here, so forgive me if I'm saying sth already said somewhere else. I guess it's not right to have one judge only. So first of all, I need other 'jury members'---and perhaps we have to be an uneven number. Three, at least.

Secondly, I suggest that each one of the judges give 3, 2 or 1 pt. to the essays s/he considers to be respectively on the First, Second and Third place.
When the results are ready, we'll notify you how many points you've got. If there are people who've got the same score, we'll invite another judge.

I also suggest that we judges use the pm system to let each other know what are our evaluations on the essays. At announcing the winners, we'll give you a brief review of your essays, and our comments on the scores.

So...who are my colleagues? Or rather, who's going to notify me that all this has been established long ago?:)

Good luck you all!

No,no,no,that's not all.I didn't want to click on "submit reply" ,but it happened. But now it is posted.

I would like to say some words about it.It's divided into three parts. The first one is when Fingon is with his army, waiting for the sunrise. The seconde one is when he sees the smoke going up from Thangorodim and the last one is when he hears his brother's trumpet!!!

These three part reveal all the thoughts he is having during the different moments before hte battle.

It's not so good ,but I did my best.

Having in mind the latest news from Happennings in The Guild I would like to dedicate this essay to my best friend and beloved sister Finduilas.I hope you will be back soon sis!I miss you!

Well... this round of essays was supposed to be about 'wars and stuff like that' and opened by two fabulous essays by Gate and Eriol. Then we, me and that High King (his idea--great one, btw), began the 'High King-last-thoughts' revolution (also on the subject of wars, but I guess a little different from the previous ones--which are more of a scholarly oulook). So I guess all the essays (starting from Gate's--posted by Lhun;)) are waiting to be judged...

Originally posted by Nóm:

I guess so... Finrod and Turgon are "left behind"... unfortunatelly. Seems like no one else wants to participate...

Nom, don't listen to angels!
Whenever they descend to earth they get dizzy and can't have a clear view on things! :p :p :D :D

In fact... the essays to be judged are the ones that could be called "fiction in its wildest flight" ;) - the "last thoughts"- essays.

The "schollary" essays by Eriol and gate just don't match on any level with the "fiction" - character of the last three.

So... the ones you shall have to look at are the last three (so far) and possibly there will be a fourth one by Finduilas.

I think that Finduilas will be the last one who will post her essay. But I know you like Finrod,Nom,so if you want you can write his last thoughts. You know it's not about judging but about pleasure,so if you think you will have nice moments writing Finrod's last thought, just go fo it!It will be a great honour for us to read it !!!

Saying that is a profanity on TTF. Evil-doers will be punished. It's true, it's in the...um...rules and stuff. :D

Anyway, Melian invited me to be one of the judges for the essays. I am feeling exceedingly lazy at the moment, which is why I'll kick back and let someone tell me which essays I'd have to judge.

Most welcome, Ithy! :D

First, to answer your question, as I did to Nom's same one (you...lazy ....! :p :D )
...the ones you shall have to look at are the last three (so far) and possibly there will be a fourth one by Finduilas.
...that is to say, the "fiction" "last thoughts"- essays.

As for Feanor.... Well...I just can't help it! This character inspires me so much whenever I read about him! I guess I have a crush on tragic characters... Like my other "champion" - Aldarion of Numenor.... and later ... Boromir of Gondor...
I just love them!

I read that "little sth" from a "little one" and... I'm still staring at the screen with a huge "jaw-drop"... it's good I don't have to say anything right now (just write;)).

I thought a little as to post any comment right now, before the judges will read and decide, but... what a heck;)

Good job, you "destructive" lover:D.

Mel,can you ask the judges to read the essays and take decisions ASAP?

I would like a new topic to be started!!Christmas is coming,so we will probably need a kind of Christmas topic, any ideas?:)

How about:

Christmas miracles - touch the real world, touch your soul.

This topic suggests a revealing of the author's attitude towards Christmas miracles - whether he/she believes they do happen or exist only in our souls, looking for hope.

Letters from Father Christmas, by JRR Tolkien

Between the years 1920 and 1943, the children of J. R. R. Tolkien received some of the most unique mail every Christmas that a child could ever hope for: letters from Father Christmas himself! Beautifully illustrated and delivered in various ways, they told of all kinds of things that happened at the North Pole, and about the folk who lived there with Santa. There is the accident-prone and rather sleepy North Polar Bear and his two cousins who cause havoc, the evil goblins, and of course the elves and gnomes, not to mention snowfolk and cave bears. The letters came, or so it is claimed by those who don't believe in Father Christmas, from the Tolkien children's father, J.R.R. Tolkien himself.

I haven't read them yet, but now seems a good time to start.
