Here is a new Project for keen minds!

Pick a character/ a place/ an event/ an item ...etc. from Tolkien's world and find analogues in other mythologies.

The threads which will contain your research shall be placed in Annals of the Eldanyárë (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=56) - section of the Halls and each shall be titled as follows:

Comparative Mythology - ... (your title)

Questions, suggestions, discussions of this Project, shall be held in this present thread.

ENJOY !!

Feanor reminds me a lot, in some ways, of Akhilleus. Also, if we can pick figures of antiquity, then Theoden reminds me of the Goth king Theodoric. Will make a more detailed post soon.

Hope to have it to you either by today, though I am busy tonight, or by tomorrow. I think the latter comparison I have mentioned is as interesting-they have a lot in common, as well as the similarity in their names.

Fairly nice, Indy. But if we start thinking of it this way, then would Aragorn be comparable to Odysseus? I'll let you ponder on that one for a bit. ;)

Thank you, for the praise.

And as for Odysseus and Aragorn....maybe. Odysseus is crafty-very crafty, and although Aragorn is crafty, in his own right, he cannot beat the old master. Both, of course, carry the generic hero code of being brave, chivalrous and mighty in battle-but that goes without saying. A bit of a superficial summary, maybe, but summaries are naturally superficial.

Wonderfully done, Inder!

How about a nice discussion, now? ;) :)

When I read your post, several issues 'cried' wildly inside of my mind immediately.
I intend to use a part of the weekend to post them, hoping for a nice and meaningfull exchange of opinions.

And ... what about the Theoden - Theodoric?

This thread has the purpose of organizing and discussing the Project itself.

Therefore the posts commenting the topic of Inderjit's expose on "Feanor - Achilles" have been moved to the original thread HERE (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?t=16268)

Everybody is welcome to continue the discussion in the original thread.
