View Full Version : Managers needed!

The Halls of Tolkienology, now being a huge place with sub-fora of a different character, in view of the activities held therein, needs Managers for each one of these sub-fora - people with vision and will to make this place live, active and interesting.
I would like to call for the attention of everyone and ask you kindly to nominate and volunteer while finally we elect these Managers.
Thank you in advance!
Wraithfully yours! :)

I would find it dificult to imagine better candidataes for at least 2 of the sub-fora than the following:
Gil-Galad - for the "Noldorin Forge"
Manveru - for the "Glittering Caves"
I volunteer to take care of the "Library", apart from watching over the whole place.
Any more opinions? Suggestions? Nominations? Volunteers? :)

i have a question, teeny tiny one: who'll vote? *laughs*

Managing subfora, heh? I think i'll see where this leads and see whether or not I will get nominated for one of them. If so, i'll run it, but if not i'll just keep myself busy at MERPG. :)

Honestly speaking, Manv,Scatha, I count more on volunteering than on nominating.
I think if a person volunteers .. then he/she really cares and wants to do the job.
So .... Dragon ... ? ;) :)

...or is able to do so.
i thank you, Lhun, for nominating me (or belief i'd be the best person to manage "the caves"). i know it's not the first time i'm trying to "politely run away from responsibility", but i guess it's sth deep inside me: i'm a terrible organizer. trust me. i do like the caves, i love this place. i know it's kinda quiet (that's what i love the most) and that level of participation in there may vary... due to artists' spirit. i know also that soon, i won't be here as much as i am now. if the caves can be "managed" by such a person (i guess i can have some ideas from time to time to come around and share), i can volunteer if - of course - there's no one else willing.
i'm in, wraith (what can i say, i feel your influence more and more every day; is it harmful? don't wanna step on the "other side", into your world:p)

This is a spirit of a true and dedicated 'volunteer'! :D
Angel, I know that you care a lot about this section of the HoT and I know very well the wonderful talant you have! It takes a talant like yours to run such a place! :)
All I can say is that I'd be so happy to know that you are going to be the one who will keep a watchfull eye on it and I shall most gladly assist you in this when you are not around for some reason.
I would like to know I can count on you !
Jus as you can always count of my help! :)
Besides, you can always "employ" several "deputies"!
Deal? ;)

Aha!
One winged creature - down! :p
Now .... another's dropped by ....
What would that dragon want?!!! A place ???
Oh! Mighty!
These halls are vast!
So, there's enough room for any flying creature's wings to spread !
And guards I have not put by the gates and the passage is free!
So ... fly in, choose a place and there you'll have your lair! :D

Oh!
A Vala would be just fine! Thank you! :D :D :D
Seriously speaking, Astaldo, I would very much appreciate you help to Manveru - our half-Angel -- half-wraith :p in the Caves.
There are a lot f activities there that IMO need to be "brushed" from the dust of time and made live again. The Caves are a huge place and more 'hands' are needed to help their MASTER.
Manv, would you accept our new friend as one of your Deputies? If so, you are most welcome to open a thread within your halls where to talk 'business' - that is - organization etc. ... Though ... why not use the already existing one?
If you, 'Cave-men ... and women' :D need my interference in some way, let me know. :)

One slight problem on that account, Wraith.
Languages of Middle Earth: Interesting, but this dragon is not a linguist in the languages discussed there. ;) (I do speak 5 other languages however :p)
The caves: The only thing I would be really good at.... art, but taken by a half-angel. :p
Annals of the Eldanyárë: I wouldn't call myself an expert in mythology, though I can discuss a few points.
Tolkien himself: I only read his books, not his bio. ;)
Mahanaxar: Provided I can't find another spot, it would be good to settle into, though I fear it may be rather small for a dragon and a wraith. ;)
The Forge: Well, I can organise. :D Plus with my breath, keeping a forge running wouldn't be too much of an issue. ;) *Trots off to get settled?*
*roar of pain, sound of stone being broken, followed by a peaceful but ominous snore* "Louzy pointed piece of stone got in the way of making myself comfy" ;)
Note: Libraries are prohibited for Dragons, the breath issue, you know? ;)

My dear Dragon, :)
I sense your desires and your fears so clearly. Believe me!
But, unlike the issue with the Caves, where talanted people like Manv and your gracious self .......** bows the wraith ** :) ......... and our new and ol' friends are really needed to maintain the life in there, I think that in the other sections what we need is a 'firm administrative hand' as well as a 'restless creative brain'.
Those two in a combination may:
>> maintain order
>> develop and improve the halls
I am so very much sure that you will find a cozy 'lair' for youself, Dragon! :D
Now ....
Very important!!!
You all are not thinking that if running one Hall, you can't be active in another, DO YOU?!!!
'Cause this is definitely NOT the case! :)
Well, Dragon?

The caves: The only thing I would be really good at.... art, but taken by a half-angel. :p
gee, i didn't know that they're so... luring :D (Gimli was right saying that whole "pilgrimages" of Dwarves - and i can now add: not only Dwarves - would come and pay to even just startle at their amazing interiors;))
Scatha, i know your "artistic verve"; still recall times when i marvelled at your galleries down the guild of artists... i don't think the caves are taken; at least not in the way of "hegemony". and since i'm a lousy organizer and you were saying sth about being able... well... we can't share bed (i sleep hanging from the ceiling, head down, not much angelic-like, but still...), but the caves... pick a spot and get comfy (just don't stomp on some little ones - it's been crowd out there since some time ;)).
and Lhun... yes, some other places need breath, too :)

I am worried about the Noldorin Forge! :(
GG has promissed he'd look after the place but he is so busy now with preparing for a very important examination.
And there lie so many, various and good projects!
They just need someone to make them happen.
Some, in fact have already started and they just need a new "sparkle" of life, while others need full attention and organization....
Volunteers, please ?

Hey I am here!!!!
I do want to take care of the whole Noldorin Forge!!!!My exam is in three days and right now I am studying really hard, but on Monday evening I will be back!!!
I would really like to take care about The Noldorin Forge because it is my most favourite place and what is more my kids are still there :) (I mean some projects which I started some time ago.)
I have also some fresh ideas about The Noldorin forge and especially about Economics of Middle-earth.I have a new idea for the thread's shape and I think it will be really interesting :)
I have also some ideas concerning BOLT and the very early versions of Tolkien's world as well as the non-Christian "links' in his first stories.
Just let me pass my exam. That's the most important one and I need it in order to change my programme and to start it in the beginning of October. If I do not pass it my situation will be more than awful.
See you on Monday.

Good luck at that exam!

We're all eagerly awaiting your return GG!
And about those exams - yes, 'Crush 'em, tigre!' ;)
When I read over this thread some questions burn in my mind.
1) Why do all these sections need managers?
2) Why a manager who will not even be around in the HoT unless he is a manager in it, and who just takes whichever section is left, and that he has any sort of clue about? This does not sound like vision and a real desire to get things moving... it sounds like someone wanting the honour of a manager position. This way might put some people off from being involved.
Don't get me wring, if someone has a vision to share then it would be great for him/her to lead by tossing out ideas and getting things moving, but if one just likes to be "Manager" well that is far far worse that having no official manager at all, is it not?
Just something to think about.

Well Nóm,I would like to answer your second question.
Being Guild Master,or Deputy of The Guild of Tolkienology required lots of efforts. The same is with HoT,I still consider them GoT,but with changed make-up ;) ,and the Master(Lhun) and the managers. They are expected to take care of GoH and to be active.
I do not know how long have you been member of TTF and whether it has happened to you or not,but sometimes real life does not allow members to be active for some time.It has happened to me many times. For example the last three months and a half I was totally busy with my real-life problems:exams, work, family tragedy.I was not able to be online as much as I wanted. That is why I resigned from my position as Guild Master of GoT(what is more I have always believed that Lhun is the best one for this job).Other times, I have had lots of free time and I have been online almost 20 hours a day.
What I am trying to say is that there are people who have been members of TTF for about three years and have had their good and bad times here.We should show understanding, because everyone has real-life problems, everyone has periods when he cannot be online as much as he wants.I have had many of them for the last 2 years and a half. You will have them when you spend some more time here. :)
And now Lhun, let's get the party started.:)
Tomorrow I will post some interesting things in the Halls :)
Ithy, thank you for the support,I am afraid I was a kind of tiny cat ;)Pray for me ,the results should be done on Wednesday.;)

When I read over this thread some questions burn in my mind.
1) Why do all these sections need managers?
To answer this question, I would say that the idea of having Managers for the different sections of the HoT is to have people who would take care of the active life of these and who shall also co-ordinate these activities for the purpose of avoiding possible chaos. Some order can only help, I think.
As for the second of your questions:
2) Why a manager who will not even be around in the HoT unless he is a manager in it, and who just takes whichever section is left, and that he has any sort of clue about? This does not sound like vision and a real desire to get things moving... it sounds like someone wanting the honour of a manager position. This way might put some people off from being involved.
Don't get me wring, if someone has a vision to share then it would be great for him/her to lead by tossing out ideas and getting things moving, but if one just likes to be "Manager" well that is far far worse that having no official manager at all, is it not?
Just something to think about.
I somehow fail to understand your point here.
Maybe we could clear up this issue, if you make your concern a bit clearer and more specific, please.
GG, I'm expecting with interest your ideas! :)

Manv, I'd be happy to assist you with the organising of it.... and mayhaps set up a thread or two in the process for Tolkien inspired artwork. ;)
Lhun, you well know that I am also busy running MERPG, which at the moment is hectic during the construction of a FAQ and rules page, which means that despite the fact that I am of a restless nature, I cannot keep a subforum running with the limited time that remains. Sorry, but I think it's better to to state things as they are, right?

May I say something?Actually to write something ;).
I would like to nominate Finduilas for the job and Manv and Inder as the big brothers who will help her.
Findi has enough experience,he has been online for almost 2 years and he has participated in some of the biggest projects so far.We all know her lectures, essays, her work in the Guild and TTF as a whole. He was Deputy Guild Master of GOT for some time and she has definitely lots of experience when we talk about skills.
Inder,Manv,I also started my academic year and trust me it is not easy-I study in three languages-English,French,Dutch and the three of them are not my mother languages(you can imagine how I feel-it is extremely difficultto switch from English to Dutch and then to French ),but still I try to be online :).Can you please help our beautiful lady Finduilas in this difficult task?

naughty, naughty kingy :p
what to start from, so many "problems" at one sitting... okay, first things first (as daffy duck would say;)). Findi, well, i love this girl (wow, how many meanings does this word have...:D); she's very vivid, her mind (and spirit) is so young, writes greatly (i envy sometimes), but... firstly, i'm glad to see "fresh" faces around (not just the same "deputies" and so on and so forth), i'm glad Astaldo wanted (still wants, i hope) to help... and i'd like to see him when i'll be coming by from time to time :) (and please, don't get me wrong, but GoT's gone; it was supposed to be a place for "one and all" - think about it; y'all think about it deep).
considering my absence... i didn't say i'm disappearing totally and i won't have time to be here cos of studies. kingy, three languages, eh? hmm, how about Old Latin and Greek (two "dead" languages) plus some more (need to pick at least two other from "living" ones;)) plus all other stuff from history to literature; from ancient art to elements of archaeology... c'mon... these are neither of my native stuff (everything connected to other region and culture); everything new; but i don't complain. so... it's not that. it's all about the money. i need to make myself comfy at new place, without comp (like here at home) and i need to see Mel... and i even can't promise her i'll be online very often. i just don't know how it's gonna be... at least during first weeks. adding that there are also my sisters who study at the same time (and dad without work...). so... still thinking i may not be here because of studies? think again...
and... the way you treat people isn't fair... i know you're here longer, so what?! that means nothing... (i hate arguments like "s/he is here for so and so" ) i don't wanna fight at my leaving, but think again: Findi's not here. when she's here, she may help then, but don't overlook others just because their new... and unknown to you. i was nominated to this spot, tho i don't know why (i like the caves, but i like more to participate there, not rule, organize or whatever you call it). i like Astaldo's attitude; he's active and it seems has a bunch of free time to spend here. Findi... we all know her well (you maybe better than others), but it seems she's busy (and that's understandable), so rather she could help Astaldo not the other way round... tho... i'd love to see all helping each other (for the glory of the caves, of course:)).
what i ask here is to... set our minds a little broader (or was all of those preparations in "the future..." thread only to maintain GoT, but under fresh name?) i know what i said here could be seen as harsh (tho, i speak my mind only), but believe me: i meant no harm. it's just sad... everytime some nominations are coming on stage, the same names (GoT's!) are being "thrown" (i know it's good when there are no others, but...).
i don't even want to reread what i just wrote. hope it won't harm anyone. if so, i apologise in advance. but please, think...
pax :)

I do not want to offend anyone.
Maybe I was misunderstood.I am not treating anyone like you are saying Manv, and you know it,because you know me enough.I do appreciate Astaldo's presence and his wish to contribute as mu as he can.You know I have always welcomed such members. What I meant was something else. You and Finduilas were the people who were most interested in the Caves. You are the one who know them most, who know how to manage with them. And that is why I suggested Findi, not because I have sympathies or something else, but because I believe she can do it.You are not able to take care of the caves because you are busy, that is why I suggested her-the next one in terms of experience.I was going to ask Lhun whether it was possible to have two or three persons responsible for a section(but I went to have my dinner, and now I am back and I see this post :( ).Thus Astaldo could help Findi. In this way we would be able to combine some experience and some energy.Re-freshment is always a good idea.
The second pm was going to be to Astaldo asking him whether he would want to work with Findi or not, because to have a team all players should want "to play" together.Obviously my dinner was too long and.....thus I did not manage to send my pm's and .....see what happened. :(
I hope that everything is clear now, because I have never offended or treated anyone in the wrong way,I have never neglected anyone :(.And I will never do such a thing here :(.
p.s.Manv,Findi will not be here two more days because she has some tests right now,but that does no mean she is not online .
:(

I do not have any problem with you Gil-Galad and with anyone. I do not have any desire for power I just wanted to help. I do not mind if Finduilas will be the leader in GC and me just be there for help. What I said is that I would like to help in any way possible. Just that.
And maybe you are right. I am new and I do not have the experience of Finduilas so as you proposed she must be the leader. I say or maybe I write again that I do not have any problem. And for this I think Gil-Galad is right. There will be something else in future that I will take care. But if needed and Finduilas cannot take it I will do whatever possible to keep GC a good and creative place.
And as manveru said pax. :)
PS. I just won by betting in Champions league and so I am no upset by anyone :)

Guys, guys.... Calm down! :)
All right ...
Let us again remember why the Managrs were suggested, in the first place.
Those should be people who would :
1/ take care of the order in the respective section
but what is even more important,
2/ make the section active and alive!
Now ... the Glittering Caves are a huge place with multiple opportunities.
And if Manv, as the Lord of the Caves (for he is !!! :D ) is online 24 hours a day, or should he be absent for certain periods of time, he is the one to decide who shall act for him and ... in fact ... for the good of this section!
Manv, to tell you the truth, I envy you, man!! :p
I can't find a single soul to come and aid me with the Library and with the Halls in general, and you ... you, dear friend, have to deal with a whole gang of people who wish to help... :D
But this is only just wonderful, isn't it! :)
The Caves most certainly need the tender touch of our splendid Finduilas, and the fantastic talant of Eledwen, and the deep poetic soul of our young Vala .... I remember a lot of other names, too...
The most important issue here is not who, but what's done !
Right?
So ... if today or tomorrow comes a person with a fresh idea and starts implementing it ... I shall only congratulate her/him!!!
Now... shall we all check our PM-boxes? ;) :)
*****
A couple of other things ...
how about Old Latin and Greek (two "dead" languages) plus some more (need to pick at least two other from "living" ones) plus all other stuff from history to literature; from ancient art to elements of archaeology... c'mon... these are neither of my native stuff (everything connected to other region and culture) ...
Lucky devil, you !!!
To study all those fascinating things!!!!!
Will you share?
As for your avatar, what I see on my highly imperfect monitor, is a blue haze over sth. like a land and in that haze I see sth. ... sort of a skull ... but a pair of eyes with a most strange look in them ....

Thanks for your support manv. :) By the way greek is not a "dead" language there are many people speaking it. Including me ;)
my my my... i meant Old Latin and Old Greek... i know you speak Greek (modern way). is it hard to learn, btw? (tho i plan to get my M.A. in Latin; means i won't have to have any interest in modern Greek)
well... i apologised once so i don't intend to do that again (if needed). my point of view was clearly stated and i don't wanna repeat that, either. and... i'm not considering myself "power" within the Glittering Caves (and never will). as Nóm asked: what for? boards need participation; people can provide it, but no one can make them to wander hither and thither - they have free will (unfortunately:p). i don't care who, i just wanna see the caves glitter. (but i don't push anything, if no one wants... they just stay gloom and dark - again that free will;))
p.s.Manv,Findi will not be here two more days because she has some tests right now,but that does no mean she is not online .
i didn't say she wasn't online... she is not here (that makes the difference)
let's end it here... i just wanted to ask (anyone willing to pay head) for keeping the caves alive, nothing more...
Lucky devil, you !!!
To study all those fascinating things!!!!!
Will you share?
let's meet in a while and see...
As for your avatar, what I see on my highly imperfect monitor, is a blue haze over sth. like a land and in that haze I see sth. ... sort of a skull ... but a pair of eyes with a most strange look in them ....
you almost get the pic... but strange look? skull? c'mon... i'm the shadow of one of the most beautiful persons!

my my my... i meant Old Latin and Old Greek... i know you speak Greek (modern way). is it hard to learn, btw? (tho i plan to get my M.A. in Latin; means i won't have to have any interest in modern Greek)
I also meant Old Greek. :) Btw Christopher Lee speaks Old Greek.
I think is a difficult language to learn more difficult than latin. It must be one of the most difficult language of the world.
And GG "let's get the party started. ;)

Manv, to tell you the truth, I envy you, man!! :p
I can't find a single soul to come and aid me with the Library and with the Halls in general, and you ... you, dear friend, have to deal with a whole gang of people who wish to help... :D
Seeing as I do not seem to be needed in the GC at all, why don't I help the wraith instead? How about it, wraith? ;)

Hmm....
Well, Dragon ... if you dare to swear an oath!!!
Beware, though!! The "wraith is gone and as a Feanorean I know what an oath means once taken!!! :p :D
Besides... WHO told you that you are not needed in the Caves!!!!
The caves would glitter even more with your presence there! :)
But ....
Swear an oath and you'll discove the magic of the Library Halls !! ;) :D

*swears helping to the best of his time and ability*
The GC can always have me posting as a creative member, right? Besides, there are already 3 or 4 people willing to take the helm there, the others helping out. That should be enough without me poking my large snout in there to meddle. :)

"... And the Dragon swore an oath which none shall break, and none should take, by the name even of Ilúvatar, calling upon him the fury of the Light Imperishable from the Timeless Halls of the One, if he kept it not. And bright as Silmarilli flashed his eyes in the glare of the torches that light the vast Halls of the Library.
And so sworn, good or evil, an oath may not be broken, and it shall pursue oathkeeper and oathbreaker to the world's end."
:p

Now... people, Manv has taken the road that started from the door-step of his home and we all hope he will not stray from it and shall safely bring him to the gates of his University.
While he's away, I shall ask Astaldo and my sweet Findi, to look after the Caves.

wish i could say the same, kingy... i do have time (at least now, after letting greek alphabet sink into my mind; letter by letter), still... not too much time on comp (two computer programmers in my room;)). but i will surely have some (not estimated) time to look in here and see what's going on... maybe even too often? ;) who knows... panta rei as they say (in greek; sorry can't do those funny "signs" here)
like i said elsewhere: have fun :D

And I am in a big trouble Manv.
All my lectures all also available in internet and I can read them and their slides using my special student account. The problem is that every time I sit in front of the pc getting ready for the lectures and the slides,I start chatting, checking TTF or just reading news, instead of studying.
tztztzt I am
