GANDALF

Gandalf, like all wizards, had the appearance of an old man, who grew old slowly with the passage of the centuries. Of course he was a Maia so the parameter “age” had no effect on him. His hair was white and his long white beard grew down below his waist. His eyebrows were particularly noticeable; they were so long and bushy that they stuck out from beneath the rim of his hat.

He dressed in a long grey cloak, thus the title “the Grey Wizard”, and he was wearing a tall shady-brimmed pointed blue hat. He also had a silver scarf and long black boots. He carried at all times a spiked staff using it as a walking stick and of course for magic.

He came with four other wizards, Saruman, Radagast, Alatar and Pallando, the Istari, in Middle-earth in the year 1000 of the Third Age. Information of his previous life in the West is very little. We only know that he was from the people of Manwë and Varda and that his name was Olórin. Valar sent Gandalf and the other Istari to help the Elves and Men destroying the evil that at the time had started rising again. When they arrive at the Grey Havens only Círdan the Shipwright knew their purpose and gave Gandalf, Narya the Ring of Fire in order to aid him in contesting the will of Sauron. Though Saruman was acknowledged to be the head of the orders of the Istari, Círdan understood that Gandalf was the greatest among the other Wizards so he entrusted him secretly Narya.

For almost 1500 year from 1000 to 2463 of the Third Age, Gandalf wandered the northern and western regions of Middle-earth learning the lands and the cultures. Unlike Saruman and Radagast, he never settled in a single place. He was closest in friendship with the Elves and especially with Elrond, who had learned of his origins from Círdan.

Almost at the same time as Gandalf had arrived in Middle-earth a dark power had appeared in southern Mirkwood, at the evil place known as Dol Guldur After a thousand years of his wanderings, Gandalf went there and drove the darkness into the east for a while. Soon it returned, and in 2463 of the Third Age the greatest among Wizards and Elves formed the White Council with Gandalf as a prominent member, to counter the growing threat.

In 2850 he revisited Dol Guldur, to find that the power that held it had grown indeed during the eight hundred years since his last visit. He recognized the dark power now as Sauron, and escaped to inform the White Council. Before he escaped, though, he found Thráin II broken in the pits of Dol Guldur, and though Thráin died before Gandalf could help him, he gave him a map and a key into the Wizard’s keeping.

2941 was an important year for Gandalf. Not only did he take part in the White Council’s expulsion of the Necromancer from Dol Guldur, but he also arranged for a party of Dwarves, accompanied by Bilbo Baggins, to travel to their ancient home of Erebor and free it from the dragon Smaug.

The great time of Gandalf though was the period from 3000 to 3019 of the Third Age. He found that the ring Bilbo found in the Misty Mountains was in fact the One Ring, forged by Sauron himself, cut from his hand by Isildur and thought to be lost for about 3000 years. Immediately he starts drawing up his strategy. He wanders all over Middle-earth seeking help because the Ring is the only thing Sauron needs in order to be the Lord of Middle-earth. Aragorn one of the most trusted friends of Gandalf is chasing Gollum because it’s the only creature that knows where the Ring is. When he is sure that the Ring is the One Ring he goes to Hibbiton and persuades Frodo, who inherited the Ring from his uncle Bilbo, to go the Bree where he will find him and from there they would go to Rivendell. But meanwhile Gandalf was captured by Saruman, who had joined the bads’ side, so he was not able to meet Frodo. At Bree Frodo met s strange fellow named Strider, later they learned that he was Aragorn heir to the throne of Gondor, who led the through many difficulties to Rivendell. There they met Gandalf who had escaped Orthanc with the help of the Eagle Gwaihir. At Rivendell was decided that the Ring had to be destroyed and Elrond made the Fellowship of The Ring, which was consisting of Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Aragorn and of course the leader Gandalf. During the passage through Khazad-dûm Gandalf encountered an ancient spirit made by Morgoth. A Balrog. They fought in the Bridge of Khazad-dûm and when it destroyed both the Balrog and Gandalf fell into the shadow. Everybody thought that Gandalf died but after a tremendous battle with the Balrog although his spirit left his body he was sent back in order to finish his task. He was even more stronger. He was the White Wizard.

After returning, Gandalf went to Lórien where he said everything to Galadriel and Celeborn the lords of these lands. Meanwhile the fellowship was broken and Frodo and Sam decided to move alone into Mordor. Pippin and Merry were kidnapped by Uruks and Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas were chasing them. That led them to Fangorn Forest where he found Gandalf, the White. After this they went to Róhan where Gandalf healed King Théoden. The King when he learned that an army was coming to destroy everything he decided to go to Helm’s Deep and defend there. Everybody thought that Gandalf would stay and help them but instead he left searching for help. When the battle was almost lost for Róhan, Gandalf came with an army of Huorns that destroyed every orc that survived from the sword and spears. He had also sent Treebeard to Isengard to destroy it. When everything finished he went to Isengard with some other people and in that place we see the demonstration of his great powers. He was ordering Saruman, as he was a little child.

Then he rode with Pippin to Minas Tirith were a great battle was about to begin. After saving Faramir from certain death by the Nazgûl he encountered the leader of the Nazgûl, the Witch-king. Unfortunately there is no battle with them. After crushing the forces of the enemy with the help of the Army of the Dead, and Aragorn came finally to his throne they decided to march to the gates of Mordor in order to give time to Frodo to destroy the Ring. In the middle of the battle the Ring was destroyed and everything begun to collapse. Then Gandalf with the help of three Eagles Gwaihir, Meneldor and Landroval rescued Frodo and Sam from certain death.

The work of Gandalf was done. The enemy was destroyed. After returning to Minas Tirith for King Aragorn’s coronation he helped him finding the sapling of the White Tree. After so many years of wandering he finally sailed into the West with the ship of the Ringbearers in 29 /9 of the year 3020 of the Third Age or at 1/1 of the 1st year of the Fourth Age.
