Theatre of Youth presents 'The Hobbit'

How do you follow a film trilogy with a worldwide gross of more than $200 billion, glowing critical praise, a pile of Academy Awards, and millions of devoted fans?

The Theatre of Youth, the Allentown theater famous for breathing life and imagination into classic stories for children, is setting out to prove it can be done, with its new production of "The Hobbit," the classic children's book and prequel to the famous "Lord of the Rings" trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. All things Middle Earth have become mainstream with the success of Peter Jackson's movies, but the delightful tale of Bilbo Baggins is still largely left to the imaginations of readers.

Doing justice to any beloved novel is a challenge, but the incredible fantasy world and imaginative detail in "The Hobbit" made this project an adventure in its own right.

"The biggest thing I was faced with was knowing that the image of the film Lord of the Rings was out there," said Kenneth Shaw, set and costume director "But "The Hobbit' is really intended for a younger audience, so it's not as sophisticated, it's not as scary."

It's been done a number of times in the UK. here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/liverpool/stage/2003/01/thehobbit/review.shtml) for instance. I haven't found one convenient enough to attend yet, but I hope to one day!
