View Full Version : Middle-Earth Maps

While looking through my old 'George Allen & Unwin' copies of the TLOR, I came across 2 maps which I did not realise I had.
Both of these maps are by Christopher Tolkien. One depicts Gondor, Rohan and Mordor. The other spans from Eriador to Rhun and From the Northern Wastes to Far Harad.
By the condition of these 2 maps I would say they were as old as Middle-Earth itself; sadly I know them to be about 30 years old only.
Out of interest, has anyone else come across maps or sketches that came from original copies of the books? If so, do they specify any particular areas in more detail (as mine does with Gondor, Rohan and Mordor) or are they simply of Middle-Earth?
Just interested to know what variations there might be out there!

My desktop image is a map of Middle Earth, from Far Harad to the Sea of Rhun to the Northern Wastes. Its in color and has little pictures in circles on the side of famous sites such as Minas Morgul and Tirith, Argonath, Barad-dur, etc. I think it was done by Tolkien himself.

I got some maps from http://www.thelordoftherings.com/
Sorry I don't know exactly where though, the site has changed since I last accesed them.
This is actually the site where I found this forum.
Also, you can get the book Atlas od Middle-Earth. Although it wasn't done by Tolkien himself, it seems accurate.
I highly recommend the Atlas of Middle Earth. It is done very accurately, and the author, whose name I forget, is a professional cartographer. It is a must for anyone interested in Tolkien maps. She has some great maps of Arda as a whole over the years, and various battles, as well as info about languages, ethnic groups and natural habitats of ME over the ages. Two thumbs up... By the way, I have also found those maps you all mentioned. Thanks.

On the map of Arda, I couldn't get the parts in the east of Rhun to enlarge.
Am I mistaken, or on that map there seems to be only either the Blue Mountians or thwe Misty Mountains, but not both.

My Dad had a hard back edition of FotR, which at a guess dated from thw 1960s. It had a large foldout map, on very fine paper. It was fantastic, and I think the map sold me on the story! I was about 12, and loved maps!
Hey I haven't grown up at all - I still love the maps.

The Ered Luin are the Blue Mountains. In the east of Beleriand and in the west of Third Age western Middle-Earth.

Does anyone know of any interactive ME maps? You know, PC software that allows you to zoom in/out, click on areas of interest for more info, trace the path of the fellowship, etc. Someone must have done this by now.

A super-cheesy win 95 program that is a limited version of what you want. It can be found in the files section of http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Rangerdave_stuff/
Also, check the thread "Interactive Map" in the member announcements section of this forum for others opinions of this little file.
enjoy

It is an absolute must have for any serious Tolkien enthusiast. So, save up your $$$ as it costs about $25.00 US. :)
Oops.. I also forgot to mention that the Atlas includes maps from all of the Ages of Middle-earth. So there are maps from Aman to Beleriand to Angband and Utumno. :)
