Hello I've made a few threads on this subject. But I haven't gotten the responces that i need for my project.
In my science fair project I am collecting data on which character reminds us of historical people.
So Once you've read this will you please give me your answer on who you think in the Lord of the rings books has Historical Similarities with a historical person?
My Beliefs are:
Gandalf-- Jesus or Winston Churchill
Aragorn - William Wallace
Sauron - Hitler
Saruman - Benidict Arnold
Frodo - Jesus or Tolkien Himself
What do you think??

I don't really think that we should compare fictional persons with real ones. I know that Prof. Tolkine didn't like it either. Anyway you have to compare only these 5 characters or more?
Gandalf - Prof. Tolkien
Aragorn - I think Wallace is good.
Sauron - I can't find anyone else right now.
Saruman - Who is Benedict Arnold?
Frodo - What about the guy who thrown cement over the Chernobil nuclear plant and prevent a much further disaster?

I think Saruman is more equated to Hitler than Saruman: Peter Jackson thought so too, and modelled Saruman's gathering of the armies on the Nuremburg rally. Here are some more; but don't scratch the surface of the comparisons - they don't hold up very well, but I'm having fun and that's the important thing.
Eowyn = Boudicca? Joan of Arc?
Tolkien based the hobbit folk (esp. hobbit talk) on the British Tommies he met in the trenches of the Somme.
Beren and Luthien - Anthony and Cleopatra
Earendil - Elijah (it's complicated - something about standing in the gap and interceding for mankind/elfkind, and then going off and joining heaven's throng)
Did Uin give anyone a lift? If so he can be Jonah.
Asfaloth - Brigadier Gerard
Shadowfax - Red Rum
Bombadil and Goldberry: HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HM The Queen. OK, Bombadil puts his finger in it, whereas DoE puts his foot in it, but it's close.
Wormtongue = Judas Iscariot
Strider = Crocodile Dundee (whad'ya mean he doesn't exist? OK then, that real life croc-wrestling Aussie whose name escapes me, or some other famous loner who reads tracks in the wild)
I'm off now. I may think of more later. G'night all! :o <- a yawn!

Bard = King Arthur Pendragon. Black arrow = excalibur, and the opportunity to reveal his kingship.
