I have an article from the Smithsonian magazine - Master of Middle-earth" which Farmer Maggott (my computer savvy husband) has made into a PDF file. It includes a wonderful full page picture of John and Edith and a very nice small photo in the text of JRRT at 41 (you know where Aragorn came from) as well as a photo of C.S. Lewis and a shot or two from the films. I have already made this available on another Tolkien site and have gotten an enthusiastic response from those who have received and read it.
If anyone is interested, either e-mail me at vaproto@aol.com with your address or post here (I will check back daily) and I will e-mail it to you. I think you will enjoy it. I know that I did. ;)

I have emailed you for a copy of it. I have begun sketches for a painting of Luthein, based on Edith Bratt. It may be possible to put Beren in too if the photo gives enough info (so far, I've only seen photos of Tolkien as a boy and as an old man). Also, any fresh biographical stuff would be a welcome read.

Oh, the wonders of modern communications! Thank you.
I have downloaded the file and had a quick look through it. I will print it out so I can read it curled up on the sofa. I instantly recognised the place the Tolkien Society had gathered - it is the Rabbit Room in the Eagle and Child, Oxford. The framed document on the right wall (amongst the photos of the inklings) is the famous piece certifying that those inklings gathered had, that day, drank to the good health of the landlord. Christopher Tolkien (undergrad.) also signed.

Mrs. M, what issue of Smithsonian had this article? A friend of mine gets this magazine and I'd like to see if he'll let me have it.

I don't know. It was sent to me and no date was on it. The author's name, however, is at the end of the article, so maybe you can trace it down through that. However, if you are able to download and print it, John did a very high resolution file (that's why it's so large) and you should not lose much on the photos and nothing on the text.
Sorry I couldn't be more help. :(

Thanks for the article, Mrs. M. It looks like a promising read.
And since this thread will most likely encompass discussion on JRRT, I'm moving this to a better place (no, not heaven ;)).

I am having problems at the moment with Entourage which is the easiest way to send the file. As my husband is also having problems, I must assume it is a "system" thingy. I will try to send the file via AOL but that takes time (about 10 minutes each send).
If you have asked for the file and haven't gotten it by the end of the day, please E-MAIL me (so I don't get confused as to who has/hasn't gotten it) and let me know. Hopefully, E. will get itself straightened out or AOL is sufficient to send it.
However, if someone can "upload" it into the Forum so that people can make their own arrangments to download it, it might be better all round. Until that time, however, I shall continue to try to send and pray that E. get's its act in order.... annoying that is!

I googled for it and it seems to be the January 2002 issue.
