Filming of 'The Hobbit' at least three years away: Jackson
Sat Mar 12, 2:29 PM ET Entertainment - AFP
SYDNEY (AFP) - Fans of Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson, best known for the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, will have to wait several years for his take on the fantasy book that started it all, "The Hobbit."
Asked how long it would take to begin shooting the movie about the small, big-footed creatures, Jackson said: "Three or four years would be accurate."
In Sydney to talk to fans about his films, the director said that the movie's production date was uncertain because of Hollywood studio MGM's sale to Sony Corp oration.
Rights to the J. R. R. Tolkien novel are split between MGM and New Line Cinema.
"I think there is probably a will and a desire to try and get it made," he told the media. "But I think it's gonna be a lot of lawyers sitting in a room trying to thrash out a deal before it will ever happen."
Jackson is currently filming a remake of 1933 classic "King Kong" in New Zealand. The film stars Australian Naomi Watts and Oscar-winner Adrien Brody (news).
"I am glad Kong is one film and not three," like The Lord Of The Rings, Jackson remarked.

Wow, William Amos, that`s great. Two months ago I have heard Peter Jackson would really make The Hobbit movie, but I didn`t hear when he would begin making the movie.

Blame the lawyers that it won't be any sooner.
March 14, 2005 - Peter Jackson, creator of the highly acclaimed Lord of the Rings films, finally confirmed this weekend that he is seriously considering a movie based on The Hobbit, which J.R.R. Tolkien wrote as a precursor to his trilogy of fantasy novels.
Unfortunately, there's a hold-up. Getting permission to adapt any book-based material for the big screen is difficult these days, and with two major studios laying copyright claims to The Hobbit, this potential project faces more difficulty than most. Both New Line Cinema (the studio that backed LOTR) and MGM – which was just purchased by Sony – will have to be dealt with before a Hobbit movie can proceed.
Given the difficulty of the negotiations, Jackson doesn't expect to start on the film for another four years. "I think it's gonna be a lot of lawyers sitting in a room trying to thrash out a deal before it will ever happen," Jackson told the press.
The longer it takes The Hobbit to get off the ground, the more difficulty Jackson might have getting necessary Lord of the Rings cast members back together again. Fans might be disappointed not to see Sir Ian Holm return as Bilbo Baggins, but the British film veteran is already in his seventies. Sir Ian McKellen will also be 70 in four years' time, but age is less of a problem for the ageless wizard Gandalf.
Jackson's current film project is a big-budget remake of King Kong. He is also planning a feature based on the best-selling mystery novel The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.

You would think that New Line and MGM would want to capitalize on the momentum created by the LOTR films and push things forward, not hold it up!
I doubt we'll see Ian Holm as Bilbo. Shame, but I think he's too old. It would be a real tragedy if Ian McKellan wasn't able to play Gandalf. :(
Noooooo....
I'm sorry, but I don't think Peter Jackson should direct the hobbit. After the enourmous success of LOTR and what he and his screenwriters did to it, I'm guessing Peter Jackson would try and make the tale more "epic", adding and subtracting elements, and it just wouldn't feel the same (Another LOTR, in some respects).
What I would really like is if Brian Sibley wrote the script (Is he still alive?) and for a different director to make the film, though I do believe Ian McKellen should still play Gandalf (Maybe this time he'll wear a blue hat!).

The problem is any Hobbit movie is a victim of the LOTR film's massive success. MGM doesn't want to give that up but New Line has all the facilities and know-how to make it happen. And ifthe rights are indeed "split" as was remarked above, that's a REAL can of worms for the lawyers to sort out.

on an even better note, how awesome it would be if PJ went back to film school to learn or relearn the basics of film-making.
we all know how much of a used car salesman PJackson is as a film director :D
and thats an insult against all the used car salesmen :D

Well he never went to film school did he? He learned everything on his own I think, which is why he refers to LOTR as the 'biggest home movie ever made'.
I personally find him refreshing, I'm sick to death of the cliche **** that comes out of Hollywood, and if PJ went back to film school it would only be to conform to the same old Hollywood stuff
(I know, some of you will say he already puts out Hollywood stuff, but I don't think so. He's NZ born and bred, and it shows in his films!)

I do hope they will not manage to solve the problem between MGM and New Line
Cinema.
He may have made nice movies from LOTR-in terms of movie quality, but I was quite disappointed with his adaptation of the book.
So,P.J get you hands off!!!!

Well, let's be honest ,I enjoyed the first part and I was ready to forgive all "Arwen's compromises",but The Two Towers changed everything....
The Return of The Ling was also a kind of disappointment in terms of adaptation.
Yes,I must confess that the movie are great cinematographic achievement, but that is not enough when we talk about J.R.R.Tolkien and LOTR.

heh! I'm with you there!
On another note, I think that it's good timing for PJ to wait three or four years...by then the Narnia movies will be out (YAY!) If all goes well with LWW, then there are plans to do the entire chronicals. I'm betting that by the time "the hobbit' is released, we'll be two or three movies into the chronicals and I'll be ready for my Tolkien fix! *grin*

Speaking of Peter Jackson, did you see how much weight he's lost? Good God!
I just want to see the Hobbit a movie. I doubt it will be easy to screw up, alot.

I don't see 'Narnia' or sequels standing in the way of Jackson making 'The Hobbit'. Those books just don't have the popularity of Tolkien's work's of TLOR or 'The Hobbit', which just about everyone has heard of, unlike Narnia.
Face it, Narnia is getting made for ONE reason: The sucsess of TLOR movies.........
As for Ian Holm, get over it.
He had a bit part in TLOR, & is easily replacable, didn't endear himself to the point where he IS Bilbo Baggins & nobody else can play the part. A younger, more age appropriate actor looking 30-35 (a 50 year old Hobbit would look about that old).
My biggest fear is Jackson won't kill off Smaug at the right time, but mark my words, Smaug will swoop down on the mountain/Dwarves, Men & Elves in the Battle of 5 Armies in the climactic scene.

I'd like to issue a denial that Peter Jackson has already promised the part of Bilbo to Jack Black on the strength of his performance in Kong. I don't know where these stories come from.

I would like to see Jack Black have a role in the Hobbit. (I thought he was great in King Kong) He would be really good in that kind of movie.

No, please no Jack Black. He wasn't right for KK, and I can't see him in the Hobbit.

Hi Gandalf White.....you have been an inspiration to me {actually the real Gandalf {I even have his signature photo} since I, too, am a wizard. Presently, I am concentrating on "wisdom" and its perspective in the modern world.
I was just thinking the other day about The Hobbit {the movie}.......I agree with you....others should be considered for the role. I hope they start the filming soon. It will be great. The Hobbit has always been a great interest of mine.
Have a safe journey, Gandalf White.

Jack Black was a startling choice for king kong but i think he pulled it off. he would be an even more startling choice for the hobbit but he has proven himself a flexiable actor and not just another comedian, id love to see him take on the challenge.:D
